[00:00:02]
>> I GUESS WE'LL GO AHEAD AND GET STARTED THEN.
[1. Procedural]
THANK YOU, EVERYBODY, FOR BEING HERE TODAY.FOR OUR REGULAR BOARD MEETING, WEDNESDAY MAY 6.
AGAIN, IF ANY MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC WANT TO SUBMIT PUBLIC COMMENTS VIA EMAIL WE ASK FOR THAT PRIOR TO THE START OF THE MEETING, BUT I'M SURE YOU CAN STILL EMAIL NOW AND ANDREA WILL BE ABLE TO FORWARD THAT TO US.
HER EMAIL IS AWITTIG@CERRITOS.EDU.
WE WILL CALL THIS SESSION TO ORDER AT 7:05:00 P.M., AND WE WILL START WITH THE ROLL CALL.
I WILL NOW MOVE ON TO ICE 1.02, WHICH IS THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE AND I WILL ASK TRUSTEE ESCOBAR TO LEAD US IN THE PLEDGE.
>> I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.
MOVING ON TO ITEM 1.03, WHICH IS AGENDA ORGANIZATION.
DOES ANY MEMBER WANT TO REORDER ANY ITEM ON THE AGENDA? SO SEEING NONE, WE DO HAVE AN ITEM, 2.02, WHICH HAS BEEN POSTPONED, SO JUST EVERYONE KNOWS THAT.
WE WILL GO ON TO ITEM NUMBER 1.04, COMMENTS FROM THE AUDIENCE.
DO WE HAVE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT?
I RECEIVED ONE PUBLIC COMMENT, THE PUBLIC COMMENT IS FROM SALVADOR AND SAYS, GOOD EVENING BOARD MEMBERS.
I HOPE FINDS NEW GOOD HEALTH, I'M A STUDENT IN COLLEGE, SOON TO BE AN ALUMNI AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER.
I WANT TO BRING ATTENTION TO THE STUDENTLED INITIATIVE ON CAMPUS, STARTED OVER A YEAR AGO IN COLLABORATION WITH CLUBS IN OUR STUDENT GOVERNMENT.
THIS INITIATIVE WAS ABLE TO PRESENT THE PROPOSED IDEAS TO THE FOLLOWING GROUP ON CAMPUS, WHICH WERE INTERCLUB COUNCIL, STUDENT SENATE, STUDENT CABINET, FACULTY SENATE, VENDORS QUARTER MEETING AND DR. FIERRO.
THE IDEA BEHIND THE PROPOSED RESOLUTION IS TO MAKE CERRITOS COLLEGE A PLASTICFREE CAMPUS BY ELIMINATING ALL NONESSENTIAL, NONCOMPOSTABLE SINGLEUSE PLASTIC.
CERRITOS COLLEGE WOULD BE THE FIRST IN CALIFORNIA TO SIGN ON TO THE BREAK FREE FROM PLASTIC PLEDGE, ENCOMPASSING ALL TYPES OF INJURIES.
WE DIDN'T MAKE IT TO THE BOARD LEVEL FOR FURTHER CONSIDERATION AND ACTION.
MANY UNIVERSITIES IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA HAVE ACTED THIS AND ESTABLISHED A COMMITTEE AND TIME FRAME TO GO TO A PLASTICFREE CAMPUS.
IF YOU DON'T THINK IT IS AN ISSUE, WATCH A DOCUMENTARY RELEASED ON EARTH DAY, THE STORY OF PLASTIC, AND SEA FOR YOUR OWN EYES HOW SINGLEUSE PLASTIC IS HARMING OUR ENVIRONMENT.
PLEASE DON'T LET OUR HARD WORK GO DOWN THE DRAIN BECAUSE WE ARE TRANSFERRING.
MANY SPENT OUR SUMMERS AND HOLIDAYS WORKING ON THIS INITIATIVE.
WE ARE MORE THAN FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES AND ACQUAINTANCES, BUT WE ARE LIKE FAMILY.
I COULD GO ON AND ON BUT DON'T WISH TO TAKE YOUR TIME.
FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN MAKING CERRITOS A PLASTICFREE CAMPUS, I'M WILLING TO SHOW YOU WHAT WE HAVE.
HE CAN BE REACHED BY EMAIL OR CELL, WHATEVER IS BEST FOR YOU.
>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH, ANDREA.
SO WE WILL GO AHEAD AND MOVE ON TO ITEM 1.05, TO REPORTS AND COMMENTS FROM CONSTITUENT GROUPS, AND I WILL GO AHEAD AND START WITH TRUSTEE ESCOBAR.
[00:05:05]
I HOPE EVERYONE IS DOING WELL SAN IN GOOD HEALTH.
I WANT TO FIRST START OFF BY THANKING ALL THE STUDENTS FOR THEIR RESILIENCE AND REALLY PUSHING THROUGH DURING THIS HARD TIME THAT WE'RE GOING THROUGH.
I ALSO WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE EXECUTIVE BOARD, WHICH I'VE BEEN A PART OF WITH DR. FIERRO AND I'M VERY GRATEFUL FOR BEING INCLUDED IN THOSE MEETINGS, PARTICULARLY IN REGARDS TO ALL THE STUDENTS NEEDS AND PARTICULARLY THEIR DIFFICULT, ESPECIALLY TRANSFERRING TO A NEW CAMPUS AS WELL AS TRANSFERRING FROM ON CAMPUS TO ONLINE.
IT HAS BEEN VERY DIFFICULT FOR A COUPLE STUDENTS WITH LACK OF RESOURCES AND ESPECIALLY TECHNOLOGY.
ALSO, WANTED TO CONGRATULATE JOHNNY WALLENS, HE WILL BE THE NEXT STUDENT TRUSTEE.
I ALSO WANT TO THANK ALL THE STUDENTS FOR NOT ONLY BEING AS AMAZING AS THEY ARE NOW, BUT FOR CARRYING ON CERRITOS COLLEGE FAMILY THAT WE CALL, AND I'M NOT SURE THIS IS THE LAST REPORT FOR EVERYONE, THOUGH.
SO I DO WANT TO THANK ANDREA AND CHERYL FOR ALWAYS ANSWERING MY QUESTIONS.
I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE AT ASCC, THEY ARE AMAZING, AND I WANTED TO THANK DR. PEREZ, RICK, APRIL, KATHY AND MISS ADRIANA AND FELIPE LOPEZ.
I WANT TO THANK DR. FIERRO FOR ALWAYS MEETING WITH ME AS SOON AS HE COULD AND MAKING TIME FOR ME.
AND I WANT TO THANK, LASTLY, FOR THE BOARD FOR BEING SUPPORTIVE OF ALL THE STUDENT INITIATIVES.
THANK YOU, TRUSTEE ESCOBAR FOR YOUR REPORT.
MOVING ON, WE WILL GO TO MISS KATHY HOGUE FROM CSCA.
>> NOT MUCH TO REPORT TONIGHT.
WE JUST GOT DONE WITH A SPECIAL CHAPTER MEETING.
YOU KNOW THERE'S JUST A LOT GOING ON WITH EVERYBODY DOING THEIR JOBS AT HOME.
WE'RE ALL SETTLING IN FINALLY AFTER, WHAT IS IT, SIX WEEKS.
WE'RE GLAD WE HAVE THE SUPPORT OF DR. FIERRO, THE EXECUTIVE TEAM, AND CONGRATULATIONS, I SAW THE EMAIL THIS WEEK, I WANT TO SAY CONGRATULATIONS.
AND WE'RE CONTINUING TO WORK VERY HARD FOR OUR STUDENTS IN ANSWERING THEIR QUESTIONS.
I DID KNOW A FEW ACTUALLY EMAILED ME THIS WEEK THEY GOT THEIR FINANCIAL AID FROM THE CARES ACT MONEY, SO THAT WAS GOOD TO HEAR.
AND THEY'RE VERY HAPPY WITH IT, AND I KNOW A FEW STUDENTS, AS WELL, AND THAT MONEY WILL BE PUT TO GOOD USE FOR A LOT OF OUR STUDENTS.
I WANT TO THANK THE STAFF FOR ALL THEIR HARD WORK, WE'RE THE BACKBONE OF THE CAMPUS TO MAKE SURE THINGS RUN AND WE APPRECIATE WORKING WITH THE FACULTY, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
AGAIN, I THINK WE'RE MOVING THROUGH TRANSITION VERY WELL AND HOPEFULLY WE WILL GET TO MOVE BACK TO CAMPUS SOON AND WE WILL SEE HOW IT GOES FROM THERE.
>> ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, MISS HOGUE.
TO DR. APRIL BRACAMONTES, REPORT FROM ACADEMIC SENATE.
>> THE REPORT IS ABOUT WHAT WE'RE DOING AT FACULTY, SO SIMILAR TO WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING IN THE PAST WEEKS IS THE FACULTY TRYING TO CHANGE TO TEACHING FROM ONLINE, I HAVE A TONE OF UNCERTAINTY AND FEAR, BECAUSE THEY'RE WORRIED ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THEIR COURSES IN THE NEXT FEW SEMESTERS, ESPECIALLY AS WE MOVE ONLINE.
THEY'RE WORRIED ABOUT ADEQUATE TRAINING, WORRIED ABOUT HAVING A TIME MEANINGFULLY CONVERT THEIR COURSE FROM REMOTE INSTRUCTION TO ONLINE TEACHING AND THEY'RE WORRIED ABOUT THEIR STUDENTS, MAKING SURE STUDENTS HAVE THE APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY, FACULTY HAVE THE APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY AND EVERYONE HAS THE RESOURCES THEY NEED TO ENGAGE IN THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS THE BEST THAT THEY CAN.
I AM WORKING WITH IARP TO ATTEMPT TO CREATE A SURVEY, BOTH FOR EMPLOYEES AND STUDENTS TO IDENTIFY THE BIG TECHNOLOGY NEEDS.
I KNOW THAT, AS WE ARE WORKING RIGHT NOW, WE ARE GETTING AS MUCH FEEDBACK AS POSSIBLE.
I KNOW THE UNION, THE SENATE, CSCA, THE COVID19 LEADERSHIP TEAM ARE ALL ASKING EVERYONE WHAT THEY NEED, BUT I THINK HAVING A MORE ROBUST SURVEY TO
[00:10:02]
IDENTIFY THE LARGER NEEDS MIGHT BE HELPFUL, ESPECIALLY AS THE FUNDING FOR THE CARES ACT COMES IN.IT IS ALSO NATIONAL EDUCATOR APPRECIATION WEEK SO I WANT TO GIVE SOME APPRECIATION TO THE FACULTY WHO HAVE BEEN WORKING INCREDIBLY HARD JUST TO ENSURE THAT STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO FINISH THE SEMESTER.
THERE'S BEEN JUST AN AMAZING EFFORT FROM FACULTY ACROSS THE CAMPUS TO ENSURE THEIR STUDENTS ARE HELD HARMLESS DURING THIS TIME OF TRANSITION, AND TO ENSURE THAT THEY'RE ABLE TO COMPLETE, IF THEY CAN.
AND, I REALLY WANT TO THANK THE FACULTY FOR CONTINUING TO PUSH THROUGH, AND I KNOW WE'RE ALL ANXIOUS AND LOOKING FORWARD TO HEAR WHAT THE PLANS ARE FOR FALL AND TO SEE IF WE CAN GAIN SOME FOOTING IN OUR NEW NORMAL.
>> ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR REPORT.
SO I WILL NOW MOVE TO MISS VERONICA VERANDA FOR A REPORT ON BEHALF OF CCSF.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO CONGRATULATED INDICATION WEEK.
AND FOR THOSE WHO BUSTED THEIR BUTT, THE FACULTY TEACHING ONLINE, MAY NOT EVER TAUGHT ONLINE, ROSE TO THE OCCASION, MOVED ONLINE AND LEARNED THE INS AND OUTS OF THE LEARNING SYSTEM CANVAS AND ZOOM.
SOME ARE STILL LEARNING AS WE GO, PARTICULARLY WITH THE MULTIPLE UPDATES ZOOM HAS UNDER GONE IN THE PREVIOUS WEEKS.
NOT ONLY, THIS WE ARE TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH THE WEEKLY, SOMETIMES DAILY COVID19 UPDATES FROM OUR DILIGENTLY WORKING CAMPUS LEADERSHIP.
ALL THE WHILE, WE ARE REPLYING TO STUDENT EMAILS, DOING OUR BEST TO ASSURE SUCCESS AND RETENTION IN CLASSES, CREATING ASSIGNMENTS, DISCUSSIONS, POSTING ONLINE FOR STUDENTS TO VIEW WHO ME BE HAVING DIFFICULT YES ACCESSING THE INTERNET AT ANY GIVEN TIME OF THE DAY, ENSURING OUR VIDEOS HAVE ACCURATELY CAPTIONING AND TRANSCRIPTS, FINDING NEW AND INTERESTING ONLINE COURSES, ASYNCHRONOUS COURSES, PROVIDING ADVICE AND SUPPORT TO OUR COLLEAGUES, CONTINUING THE WORK OF THE COLLEGE, PLANNING FOR THE COMING SEMESTERS AND SITTING IN THE SAME UNCOMFORTABLE CHAIR IN THE ONLY CLEAN SPOT IN OUR HOMES FOR HOURS ON END TO DO THIS WORK.
THIS AMONGST THE WORRY AND UNCERTAINTY WHATEVER WILL HAPPEN IN THE COMING SEMESTERS AND WHEN THINGS WILL GO BACK TO NORMAL, WHATEVER THAT MEANS.
THE UNION RECENTLY REACHED OUT TO OUR DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND ASKED THEM TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK WHAT THE REMOTE WORKING CONDITIONS ARE AND THE REMOTE WORKING CONDITIONS OF THE FACULTY THEY WORK WITH THERE WAS NO SHORTAGE OF INPUT.
THE MOST COMMON THINGS AMONG COMMENTS WAS COMPENSATION FOR ADDITIONAL WORKS, FOR ADDITIONAL WORK, OFFICE SUPPLIES AND ERGONOMIC CHAIRS AND EQUIPMENT TO WORK AT HOME.
THEY MAY HAVE TO RETURN TO THE CAMPUS IN THE FALL, FOR LABS, CHECK STREET, NURSING AND DANCE.
THE DISTRICT TO PROVIDE FACE COVERINGS, GLOVES, SANITIZATION SUPPLIES AND ENCOURAGING SOCIAL DISTANCING.
THEY'RE CONCERNED WITH ACADEMIC FREEDOM IN AN ONLINE DEPARTMENT, ASKS THAT FACULTY ARE HELD HARMLESS FOR ONLINE INSTRUCTION PARTICULARLY SINCE THERE ARE MANY UNCERTIFIED TO TEACH ONLINE AND THERE IS CURRENTLY A SHORTAGE AVAILABLE OF TRAINING, AND EVEN THROUGH OUR OWN CAMPUS.
CURRENTLY, WE HAVE A SELFBASED TRAINING READY TO GO BUT NO DE COORDINATOR OR TEAM TO RUN THE PROGRAM WITH ALL THIS IN MIND, WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF NEGOTIATING OKLAHOMA FOR USE, ONE FOR EVALUATIONS AND ALL FOR MOU TO COVER ALL OTHER WORKING CONDITIONS.
WE ARE HOPEFUL THAT ALL AREAS OF CONCERN ARE ADDRESSED FAIRLY AND ADEQUATELY IN THESE MOUS.
YESTERDAY, FACULTY RECEIVED GOOD NEWS.
DR. FIERRO, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND THE ADMINISTRATION INFORMED FACULTY THEY WOULD RECEIVE A ONETEAM STIPEND OF $500.
IN A MEETING WITH DR. FIERRO LAST WEEK I STATED THAT RECOGNITION OF FACULTY EFFORTS WAS IMPORTANT.
I WOULD LIKE TO THANK DR. FIERRO, THE BOARD FOR RECOGNIZING THE TIRELESS EFFORTS OF FACULTY.
[00:15:02]
WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO FINDING THE BEST WAY FORWARD WITH YOU.>> ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU SO MUCH, MISS MIRANDA.
SO I THINK THAT COP COLLUDES REPORTS AND COMMENTS FROM CONSTITUENT GROUPS.
SO WE WILL NOW MOVE ON TO OPEN SESSION.
ITEM 2.01, WHICH IS INSTITUTIONAL PRESENTATION, RECOGNITION OF VALERY
[2.01 Institutional Presentation: Recognition of Valery Escobar, Student Trustee]
ESCOBAR, STUDENT TRUSTEE.SO, ANDREA, WOULD YOU THERE WE GO.
SO, VALERY, IN A DIFFERENT SET UP, USUALLY WE ALL MEET TOGETHER IN THE BOARD ROOM, CELEBRATING A GREAT YEAR OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR YOU.
HOWEVER, SINCE THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE, I THINK THIS WILL COME AS CLOSE SECOND.
WHEN WE ARE BACK TOGETHER, WE WILL INVITE YOU BACK TO CELEBRATE WITH US AND RECOGNIZE YOU IN PERSON.
I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR ALWAYS BEING REASONABLE, FOR ALWAYS BRINGING CONCERNS OF THE STUDENTS TO ME AND TO US, SO WE CAN WORK TOGETHER TO ADDRESS THAT.
YOU HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLY PROFESSIONAL THROUGHOUT YOUR YEAR AS A STUDENT TRUSTEE, INCREDIBLY RESPONSIBLE, ALWAYS COME TO THE MEETINGS, AND IF YOU CAN, YOU ALWAYS NOTIFY US AHEAD OF TIME AND YOU HAVE ALWAYS A REASONABLE EXPLANATION, AND THE EXPLANATION USUALLY IS YOU ARE IN CLASS OR STUDYING, WHICH IS ALWAYS A GOOD EXCUSE TO MISS A MEETING BECAUSE YOU ARE FIRST A STUDENT.
I WANT TO EXTEND MY APPRECIATION FOR ALL THE INITIATIVES THAT YOU STARTED DURING THIS PAST YEAR.
I KNOW YOU WORK IN THE GOING GREEN CAMPAIGN, YOU VOLUNTEER A NUMBER OF TIMES IN THE FOOD DRIVES AND OTHER ACTIVITIES ON CAMPUS, AND I ACTUALLY APPRECIATE THAT.
WHEN WE BEGAN MEETING ON THE COVID19 MEETINGS, YOU COULD HAVE JUST SAT THERE OR NOT COME TO THE MEETINGS, BUT SHOW UP TO EVERY MEETING AND YOU HAD NOTES OF THE ITEMS THAT WE HAD DISCUSSED THE WEEK BEFORE, AND YOU BROUGHT BACK THE FEEDBACK BASED ON COMMENTS FROM THE STUDENTS, WHICH WAS INCREDIBLY HELPFUL FOR US TO CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD.
I KNOW THAT YOU HAVE A BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD OF YOU, AND I KNOW THAT THIS IS JUST GOODBYE, BECAUSE WE WILL CONTINUE TO WORK TOGETHER NEXT YEAR WHERE YOU ARE THE ASCC.
SO, WE OWE YOU AN INPERSON CELEBRATION, AND IT IS WITH GREAT GRATITUDE THAT I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR THIS YEAR OF SERVICE AS A STUDENT TRUSTEE.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH, AND YOU WILL BE MISSED.
AND WE WILL SEND YOU THAT CERTIFICATE IN THE MAIL.
TRUSTEE ESCOBAR, DID YOU HAVE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANTED TO ADD.
>> I JUST WANTED TO THANK EVERY SINGLE PERSON, NOT ONLY ON THE BOARD BUT AS WELL AS EVERYBODY WHO GOES TO THE BOARD MEETINGS.
I REALLY APPRECIATE THE SUPPORT THAT THE STUDENTS HAVE FROM THE BOARD.
I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL OF THAT FROM EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU, AND I'VE LEARNED SO MUCH FROM EVERY SINGLE BOARD MEMBER.
THERE HAS BEEN A LITTLE BIT OF WISDOM FROM EACH BOARD MEMBER, THANK YOU.
>> DO ANY OF MY COLLEAGUES HAVE ANYTHING THEY WOULD LIKE TO ADD?
>> I JUST WANT TO SAY, VALERY, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BRINGING SUCH AN UNPRECEDENTED LEVEL OF ENTHUSIASM TO THE JOB AND YOU REALLY TAKE THE JOB VERY SERIOUSLY AND EVERY DAY I'VE EVER TALKED TO YOU IN A PROFESSIONAL CIRCUMSTANCE LIKE, THIS I'VE ALWAYS SEEN THAT YOU TRULY CARE ABOUT THE STUDENTS AND THAT YOU HAVE DONE EVERYTHING THAT YOU POSSIBLY CAN, NO MATTER HOW HARD IT IS, TO DO SOMETHING BENEFICIAL FOR THE STUDENTS AND WE'RE REALLY GOING TO, YOU KNOW, THANK YOU FOR THAT AND HOPE TO KEEP SEEING YOU AROUND IN SOME CAPACITY.
>> I AGREE WITH ZURICH, THANK YOU, VALERY FOR BEING VERY PROFESSIONAL AND TO GIVE THE STUDENTS OPINION.
[00:20:01]
OBVIOUSLY, ECHO WHAT THE OTHERS HAVE SAID, AND I REALLY HOPE THAT WHATEVER SORT OF MAGIC FRAMEWORK THAT YOU BROUGHT TO THE TABLE LAST YEAR, YOU PASS THAT ALONG TO THE NEXT STUDENT TRUSTEE, BECAUSE IT WAS VERY VALUABLE ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS TO GET YOUR INPUT ON A NUMBER OF ITEMS, AND THE WAY THAT YOU RESPECTFULLY JUST LEVERAGED THE OPPORTUNITY TO REALLY ADVANCE STUDENTS IS AN INVALUABLE TESTIMONY TO WHY WE WOULD HAVE STUDENT TRUSTEES, SO I JUST HOPE THAT THAT REALLY CONTINUED, BECAUSE OTHERWISE, YOU WILL BE SORELY MISSED, SO THANK YOU SO MUCH.
>> AND I JUST WANT TO ADD THAT I THINK IT WAS FANTASTIC TO WATCH HOW YOU ENGAGED AS THE VOICE OF THE STUDENTS ON CAMPUS, AND THAT YOU ALWAYS TOOK IT VERY SERIOUS ANY TIME ANY OF YOUR STUDENT CONSTITUENTS CAME TO YOU AS JUST BEING VERY PROFESSIONAL, CARING AND LOVING IN REGARDS TO EVERYTHING ABOUT THE STUDENT LIFE, AND TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THIS POSITION, TO BE IN A POSITION OF POWER TO REALLY TAKE CARE OF OTHER PEOPLE, SO I APPRECIATE YOU, VALERY.
I ALSO WANT TO ECHO EVERYBODY'S CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH TO TRUSTEE ESCOBAR.
I THINK IT'S BEEN SUCH AN HONOR TO WORK WITH ALL OUR TRUSTEES SINCE I'VE BEEN ON THE BOARD, AND ESPECIALLY YOU.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR DILIGENCE AND HARD WORK ON BEHALF OF THE STUDENTS, AND I THINK ALSO YOU ALWAYS PREPRIORITIZE YOUR STUDIES AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND THAT WILL PAY OFF.
WE WILL STILL WORK WITH YOU IN YOUR NEW ROLE AS ASCU PRESIDENT, SO CONGRATULATIONS ON THE NEW JOB.
SO, LET'S SEE, THE NEXT ITEM IS ITEMS 2.02, AS I MENTIONED EARLIER, HAS BEEN POSTPONED.
IT IS AN INSTITUTIONAL PRESENTATION ON A PUBLIC OPINION SURVEY ON A POTENTIAL NEW BOND MEMBER.
THAT IS POSTPONED TO A LATER ITEM.
[2.03 Institutional Presentation: Discussion of Fall Semester Course Delivery Options]
THE NEXT ITEM IS 2.03, DISCUSSION OF FALL SEMESTER COURSE DELIVERY OPTIONS.>> WELL, IF WE HAVE IN THE AUDIENCE THIS EVENING, I THINK THIS ITEM IS PROBABLY THE ONE THAT IS BRINGING THE LARGEST AUDIENCE, AT LEAST ON OUR CAMPUS, FOR STUDENTS AND FACULTY.
ONE SAID THEY WERE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THIS TODAY AND I HAVE GOTTEN MULTIPLE EMAILS ABOUT WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO DURING THE FALL SEMESTER.
I WANT TO START SAYING WE'VE BEEN LOOKING VERY CLOSELY AT THE LOCAL DATA, LA COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH DATA, STATE DATA.
I KNOW WE'VE HAD NUMEROUS CONVERSATIONS ACROSS CAMPUS, DIFFERENT FACULTY, DIFFERENT FACULTY GROUPS.
I STILL HAVE A FEW MORE MEETINGS COMING UP WITH OUR FACULTY.
AND WITH A LITTLE BIT OF TIME, THE FALL SEMESTER, IT IS NOT BECAUSE WE WERE NOT DOING OUR PART, IT IS ACTUALLY BECAUSE WE ARE TAKING A LOT OF PIECES OF INFORMATION INTO CONSIDERATION TO MAKE THESE DECISIONS.
SO, WE ARE PRESENTED WITH A COUPLE OF CHOICES, ALL ARE RELATIVELY DIFFICULT TO MAKE, WHICH WAY TO GO.
THE FIRST ONE WILL TO BE RETURN TO CAMPUS, JUST LIKE WE HAVE BEEN PRIOR TO ALL THIS.
THE SECOND ONE WILL BE TO DO SOME ROTATIONS ON CAMPUS.
AND, THE THIRD ONE WILL BE PRIORITIZING SOME OF THE OFFERINGS OF CLASSES THAT WE WILL NOT OR THAT WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO MOVE ONLINE DURING THE FALL SEMESTER.
SO, WE WAITED THIS LONG TO BE ABLE TO GET THE LATEST INFORMATION FROM THE GOVERNOR.
WE KNEW, AS WE GOT INTO THE SECOND WEEK OF MAY, THE COUNTIES WERE GOING TO START MAKING DECISIONS FOR THE REST OF THE SUMMER, SO WHAT'S AT STAKE, SO WE WERE ABLE TO GATHER ALL THAT INFORMATION.
AS YOU KNOW, THE GOVERNOR IS BEGINNING THE REOPENING OF THE STATE AND IS NOW
[00:25:03]
SEPARATED THE STATE, STEP TWO, INTO TWO DIDN'T PARTS.NEITHER ONE OF THE STEPS, NEITHER ONE OF THE PARTS A OR B OF THE STEP COOL INCLUDE THE SCHOOLS OR COLLEGES.
HE ALSO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK AT THE BRIEFING OF LA COUNTY TODAY, HE THEY ARE BEING JUST AS CAUTIOUS, SCHOOLS WON'T BE CONSIDERED UNTIL THE LAST PART OF STEP THREE IN L.A.
COUNTY, WHICH ESSENTIALLY MEANS IT WILL BE A WHILE.
THEY DID NOT PROVIDE ANY CONCRETE DATA AS TO WHEN THEY WERE GOING TO ALLOW THE REOPENING OF THE SCHOOLS.
SO, WITH ALL THAT IN MIND, AND WITH THE KNOWLEDGE, AND I WANT TO USE A DISCLAIMER HERE, I'M NOT AN EXPERT ON THIS, BUT THE KNOWLEDGE THAT AS WE BEGIN RELEASING PEOPLE INTO THE COMMUNITY, WITH THE OPENING OF THE STATE, IT IS LIKELY THAT WE WILL INCREASE THE NUMBER OF POSITIVE CASES, THE NUMBER OF HOSPITALIZATIONS AND SO ON.
WHAT THE CURRENT MEASURES HAVE GIVEN US THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO, STATE AND CLINICS IN THE EVENT WE HAVE A LARGE SURGE, IT IS EASIER TO TAKE CARE OF EVERYONE.
SO, IT IS VERY LIKELY THAT, AS WE START SEEING MORE PEOPLE GO OUT AND ABOUT AND BEGIN OPENING DIFFERENT SECONDS OF THE ECONOMY, THE CASES OF COVID19 WILL INCREASE, IT IS LIKELY THE LEVEL OF HOSPITALIZATIONS WILL INCREASE.
WHICH THAT COULD POTENTIALLY IMPACT OUR STUDENTS OR FACULTY OR STAFF, ADMINISTRATORS AND SO ON.
SO LOOKING AT ALL THOSE PIECES OF INFORMATION, WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO PROPOSE TO ALL OF YOU IS A MODEL IN WHICH WE COME BACK TO CAMPUS IN THE FALL SEMESTER BUT ONLY OFFERING THE LAB CLASSES THAT WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO TRANSFER ONLINE AS PRIORITY ONE.
DEPENDING HOW THE NUMBERS LOOK AS WE GET CLOSER TO THE BEGINNING OF THE FALL SEMESTER, WE WILL HAVE A SECOND LAYER OF LAB COURSES, WE WILL CALL PRIORITY TWO, AND THOSE COURSES ARE COURSES LIKE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, LIKE PHYSICS, THAT ALTHOUGH WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TRANSFER ON LIKE, FACULTY HAS DONE A FANTASTIC JOB FINDING ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO DELIVER THE COMPONENTS IN THOSE COURSES ONLINE, THOSE ARE COURSES THEY LIKELY WILL NEED A LITTLE MORE HANDS ON ON CAMPUS.
SO, IF THE NUMBERS ARE FAVORABLE, I THINK CLOSER TO THE END, TO THE BEGINNING OF THE FALL SEMESTER, WE CAN MAKE RELEASE WHICH THOSE CLASSES WILL ALSO BE ALLOWED TO BE ON CAMPUS.
WHEN I SAY THOSE CLASSES, I MEAN ONLY THE PORTION, THE LAB PORTION OF THE CLASSES AND MAYBE NOT ALL LABS BUT A SELECT THE NUMBER OF LABS.
THE REASON FOR SAYING THAT IS TO CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN THE FOOTPRINT OF CAMPUS LOAD FOR A COUPLE OF REASONS.
ONE, TO EMPLOY SOCIAL DISTANCING.
THE SOCIAL DISTANCING GUIDE LINES HAVE NOT BEEN CHANGED.
IN FACT, THEY ARE CONTINUING TO REINFORCE, EVEN AS WE GO PACK INTO BUSINESS WE SHOULD CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING.
SO, BY MAINTAINING A LOWER NUMBER OF SECTIONS ON CAMPUS WILL ALLOW US TO IMPLEMENT SOME OF OUR SOCIAL DISTANCING MEASURES.
SO AS AN EXAMPLE, WE PROBABLY WILL NEED TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF LABS, THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS IN A LAB, THAT WE WILL TEACH AT ANY GIVEN TEAM SOAR MOST LABS AT ABOUT 20, 24 STUDENTS, WHICH MEANS WE PROBABLY WILL HAVE TO CAP THEM AT 10, REQUIRE EVERYONE OBVIOUSLY TO USE FACE COVERS, SANITIZE THE FACILITIES MORE FREQUENTLY DURING THE DAY, AND AS OF THIS POINT, BASED ON L.A.
COUNTY REGULATIONS, WE'LL PROBABLY HAVE TO DO A QUICK CHECK ON WHETHER OR NOT SOMEONE HAS A FEVER, HAS A COUGH, IS SHORT OF BREATH.
WHICH IS SOMETHING THAT WE HAVE BEEN DOING FOR OUR EMPLOYEES AT THIS TIME AND THEY HAVE TO REPORT IF THEY HAVE A FEVER, THEY'RE COUGHING, THEY HAVE LOST TASTE AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
IF THOSE THINGS DON'T CHANGE, WE WILL HAVE TO IMPLEMENT THOSE AND DEVELOP PROTOCOLS TO SEE HOW WE ACTUALLY DO IT ON CAMPUS.
[00:30:04]
THE NEXT PART OF NOT FILLING THE CAMPUS ALL AT ONCE, BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN EVERYTHING NICE AND CLEAN TO THE EXTENT THAT IS POSSIBLE THE MORE PEOPLE ON CAMPUS, THE HARDER TO SANITIZE MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY.THE MORE BUILDINGS OPEN, THE HARDER IT IS FOR THEM AND OBVIOUSLY WILL BE DIFFICULT TO MEET THE CAPACITY OF HAVING A FULLY FUNCTIONAL CAMPUS, MAINTAINING SOCIAL DISTANCING AND SANITIZING MULTIPLE TEAMS A DAY.
DURING THE LAST MONTH OR, SO WE HAVE WORKED VERY DILIGENTLY, ACQUIRING MASKS, GLOVES, CLEANING SUPPLIES, SANITIZING STATIONS, CLEANING TECHNOLOGY.
WE HAVE SOME INTERESTING EQUIPMENT TO BE ABLE TO SANITIZE ROOMS VERY QUICKLY WITH MINIMAL DOWN TIME THAT WE WERE ABLE TO ACQUIRE, AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO DO THAT IN PREPARATION TO THE FALL SEMESTER.
BUT, THE IDEA IS TO CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN A LOW FOOTPRINT ON CASES.
IF WE HAVE A COUPLE OF WEEKS OF DECLINING CASES IN L.A.
COUNTY, WE COULD POTENTIALLY EASE THE RESTRICTIONS A LITTLE BIT MORE FOR THE REST OF THE STAFF, ADMINISTRATORS AND SO ON TO COME IN TO CAMPUS A LITTLE MORE FREQUENTLY.
FACULTY, ONCE WE GET THE SEMESTER GOING, WE WOULDN'T CHANGE THE OFFERING FROM ONLINE TO BEING ON CAMPUS BECAUSE THAT WILL PRESENT MULTIPLE DIFFICULTIES WE SHOULDN'T CREATE INTERUPTIONS THE MIDDLE OF THE SEMESTER.
THE REST OF US WHO POTENTIALLY MIGRATE TO CAMPUS AS NEEDED DOUGH PENDING HOW THE PUBLIC HEALTH NUMBERS ARE GOING TO LOOK.
THIS IS SOMETHING WE HAVE TO DO CAREFULLY, IT IS BETTER TO TAKE A CONSERVATIVE APPROACH.
IT IS NOT A RACE, IT IS NOT ABOUT OPENING FIRST, IT IS OPENING IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY FOR STUDENTS, THE COMMUNITY AND EVERYONE INVOLVED.
IT IS ABOUT HELPING THE COUNTY AND NEIGHBORING CITIES TO MAINTAIN THE CASES LOW, SO THE CONSERVATIVE APPROACH IS WHAT I RECOMMEND.
WE WILL HAVE ADDITIONAL INVESTMENT IN TECHNOLOGY TO ENSURE THAT EVERYONE HAS WHAT WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO OPERATE ONLINE ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF THE SEMESTER, WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO ACQUIRE A FEW THINGS.
THERE ARE OTHER PIECES OF SOFTWARE THAT WE'RE GOING TO NEED TO IMPLEMENT AS WE MOVE FORWARD.
I ALSO SEE THIS AS AN OPPORTUNITY.
I SEE THIS AS AN OPPORTUNITY CHANGE MANY OF OUR PRACTICES, SO, FRIENDS, SOMETHING I AM VERY HAPPY TO SEE IS I THINK SINCE I GOT HERE, I'VE BEEN TRYING TO GO PAPERLESS IN MANY AREAS OF CAMPUS AND I'VE BEEN NOT VERY SUCCESSFUL UNTIL NOW.
BUT, THIS HAS REALLY FORCED US TO LOOK AT THINGS IN A DIFFERENT WAY, SO NOW WE HAVE A SIGN WE CAN NEWS ALL OUR FORMS. MULTIPLE FORMS HAVE BEEN MIGRATED TO DIGITAL FORMS WITH THE HELP OF DR. LINDA CLOWERS, AND SHE HAS DONE A GREAT JOB IN ACADEMIC AFFAIRS, MIGRATING THOSE FORMS WITH MANY OTHERS ON CAMPUS AND WE CONTINUE TO STREAMLINE.
WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT MAKING THE LEAP TO THE ONLINE ENVIRONMENT AND WE KNOW THAT AS WELL AS WE COULD HAVE IN THE PAST AND THIS IS REACTIVATING A LOT OF THOSE CONVERSATIONS AND ENERGIZING PEOPLE TO SAY, YEAH, I THINK WE COULD DO THAT.
WHILE IT WILL REQUIRE AN INVESTMENT ACROSSTHEBOARD, AN EFFORT FROM ALL YEARS OF CAMPUS, MONETARY INVESTMENT IS SOMETHING THAT TO CHANGE THE WAY WE DO THINGS.
IT IS BRINGING A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES AND I THINK WE'RE POISED TO CONTINUE TO GROW AND GET BETTER IN THAT SITUATION.
SO, AGAIN, MY RECOMMENDATION WOULD BE TO BOTH WITH A CONSERVATIVE MODEL WE PRIORITIZE THE LEVEL OF CLASSES.
THE FIRST LEVEL IS ALL OF OUR CITY AND HEALTH OCCUPATIONS COURSES THAT WE
[00:35:01]
HAVE CURRENTLY ON HOLD TO BE MOVING TO CAMPUS AS SOON AS WE CAN.MODIFY THE SIZE OF OUR LABS AND WE WILL HAVE TO WORK WITH FACULTY AND STAFF IN ORDER TO GET THAT FIGURED OUT.
THE NEXT, OF COURSE, SAYS POSSIBLY THE COURSES FROM SEM, THE ONES THAT HE WOULD SUGGEST WE GIVE PRIORITY TO, THE CTE COURSES AND THE HEALTH OCCUPATION COURSES TO BEGIN WITH RECOGNIZE, AM I MISSING ANY DEPARTMENTS ON THE PRIORITY COURSES?
>> NO THOSE ARE SOME OF THE PROGRAMS WE DISCUSSED.
SO THAT WOULD BE OUR CURRENT RECOMMENDATION, BASED ON THE DATA THAT WE HAVE UP TO THIS POINT.
SO, I THINK I WOULD LIKE TO MAYBE HEAR COMMENTS FROM THE STUDENTS, YOU KNOW, FROM TRUSTEE ESCOBAR WHAT HER THOUGHTS ARE.
THE QUESTION I HAVE IS HOW IS THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE NOW.
WHAT ARE YOU HEARING FROM STUDENTS TO HOW THEY ARE ADJUSTING TO THE ONLINE EXPERIENCE.
AND THEN THE OTHER QUESTION, COMMENT I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR IS FROM OUR FACULTY LEADERS HERE IS YOU MENTIONED SOME OF THEM IN YOUR OPENING COMMENTS, SOME OF THE CONCERNS AND THE ADDITIONAL INVESTMENT THAT WE NEED TO MAKES A WE TRANSITION INTO MORE ONLINE TEACHING, SO HE WOULD LIKE TO KIND OF HEAR YOUR PERSPECTIVE, AS WELL.
AND FIRST BEFORE WE OPEN IT UP TO QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS FROM THE TRUSTEES SO THAT WILL BE OKAY? I'LL START WITH MAYBE TRUSTEE ESCOBAR SINCE I CAN SEE YOU FIRST.
SO DIFFERENT STUDENTS HAVE HAD DIFFERENT TYPES OF TRANSITIONS.
SO, FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE GONE FROM, LET'S SAY LABORATORY CLASSES, SO CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS AND BIOLOGY, IT HAS BEEN A LITTLE BIT DIFFICULT BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE THERE IS A LOT OF EXTRA STRAIN IN GENERAL DUE TO THE LACK OF BEING IN PERSON AND COMPREHENDING THE ACTUAL LAB.
SO, SOME OF US ARE ACTUALLY HANDS ON STUDENTS AND IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO FULLY COMPREHEND THINGS JUST THROUGH A SCREEN OR AUDITORY OR JUST VISUAL.
SOME STUDENTS DID SAY THEIR CLASSES ARE EASIER NOW, IT IS A LOT MORE CONVENIENT FOR THEM.
THE PROFESSORS ARE TRYING REALLY HARD TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE CLASSES AND HOW TO TRANSITION, PARTICULARLY LABS AND SOME LECTURES ONLINE, AND WE'RE BOTH FIGURING IT OUT TOGETHER.
SO I THINK IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TEAM AND IT JUST CHANGES VARYING ON CLASSES.
>> ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU, TRUSTEE ESCOBAR.
DO WE HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR FEEDBACK FROM EITHER VERONICA OR APRIL?
>> SO, AS FAR AS THE FACULTY EXPERIENCE AND THE PLAN, I REACHED OUT TO DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, ASKING THEM ABOUT WHAT THEY MAY NEED TO CONTINUE ONLINE AND WHAT THEY MAY WHAT CHALLENGES THEY MAY EXPERIENCE AND ALSO IF THEY WERE TO COME BACK, WOULD THEY WANT TO BE SOME OF THE FIRST BACK ON CAMPUS OR ARE THEY MORE INTERESTED IN STAYING ONLINE.
WE DID HAVE A LOT OF YEARS LIKE MY OWN COMMUNICATION STUDIES, PSYCHOLOGY, MORE TRADITIONAL LECTURE AREAS.
THE CHAIR CASED, BASED ON FEEDBACK FROM THE FACULTY, THEY WOULD PREFER TO STAY ONLINE AND FEEL LIKE THEY CAN TRANSITION THEIR COURSES WITH ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FROM THE DISTRICT, SUCH AS SOME OF THE TECHNOLOGIES BECOMING PERMANENT, STUDIO, BLACKBOARD ALLY, AND HELP FROM THE COLLEGE REGARDING DISTANCE EDUCATION.
ON THE OTHER SIDE THERE FACULTY WORRIED ABOUT TRANSITIONING CLASSES OR KEEPING THEM FULLY ON LINE BECAUSE THERE ARE DIFFICULTIES.
ONE PROGRAM THAT COMES TO MIND IS THE PRELAW PROGRAM THERE SPECIFIC SOFTWARES I BELIEVE ARE FAIRLY COSTLY THAT THE STUDENTS TYPICALLY ACCESS IN A COMPUTER LAB THAT I'M NOT BASED ON WHAT I HEARD FROM SOME OF THE FACULTY, I'M UNSURE IF
[00:40:02]
IT IS FEASIBLE TO PROVIDE THAT TO OUR STUDENTS AT HOME.AND, THEN, ALSO, SOME OF THE COURSES ACTUALLY REQUIRE YOU TO USE THE LAW SECTION OF OUR LIBRARY TO LOOK THROUGH PHYSICAL COPIES OF THINGS.
SO I THINK THERE IS SOME CONCERN ABOUT TRANSITIONING THINGS LIKE THAT.
ADDITIONALLY, I THINK A LOT OF OUR FACULTY ARE NERVOUS TO COME BACK, JUST BECAUSE OF THEIR SAFETY.
THEY FEAR THAT I THINK THERE IS A HOT OF FEAR AROUND THE DISEASE AND UNCERTAINTY AND I THINK THAT FACULTY ARE VOICING THIS, THEY HEAR IT FROM THEIR STUDENTS, THEY'RE WORRIED ABOUT COMING BACK INTO THE CLASSROOM, THEY'RE WORRIED ABOUT BEING ABLE, HOW DO WE TELL A STUDENT WHO MAY BE SICK IT IS NOT ADVISABLE TO SIT IN THE CLASS RIGHT NOW.
SO I THINK THERE IS A LOT OF CONCERN OVER SAFETY.
I NO THAT AS A CAMPUS, WE'RE DOING OUR BEST.
THEY HAVE SEA REALLY RAMPED UP THE CLEANING.
THERE IS A LOT OF THAT UNCERTAINTY AROUND THAT RETURN.
THERE IS ALSO UNCERTAINTY AROUND WHAT THIS MEANS FOR EDUCATION AS A WHOLE, BECAUSE OF THE BIG MOVE TO ONLINE EDUCATION AND BECAUSE, IF THIS IS, IN FACT, A DISEASE THAT WE'RE GOING TO SEE EVERY YEAR, EVERY COUPLE YEARS, EVERY SEASON, WHAT HAVE YOU THAT IN ORDER TO BE NIMBLE ENOUGH OR FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO TEACH ON THE GROUND ONE SEMESTER AND THEN ONLINE ANOTHER IT REQUIRES A LOT OF ADDITIONAL WORK AND IT REQUIRES FACULTY TO REALLY BE ABLE TO TEACH IN BOTH ENVIRONMENTS KIND OF ALL THE TIME.
THERE'S SEVERAL FACULTY WHO ARE CONCERNED ABOUT, YOU KNOW, THAT THEY NEVER WANTED TO BE ONLINE INSTRUCTORS, THEY DON'T THINK THEIR AREA SHOULD BE ONLINE.
LAB CLASSES ARE HARDER TO CONVERT ONLINE.
I THINK THEIR CONCERN IS THAT, WITH ONLINE EDUCATION OR WITH EVERYONE KIND OF BEING AT HOME RIGHT NOW, STUDENTS MAY NOT WANT TO COME BACK TO THE CAMPUS AND IT MAY IMPACT THEIR CLASSES BECAUSE THERE MAY NOT BE STUDENTS TO FILL THE SEATS AT SOME POINT.
IF THERE ARE OTHER ALTERNATIVES FROM OTHER CAM AND OTHER ALTERNATIVES, THEY MAY NOT COME BACK.
AND THEY NEED TECHNOLOGY, WEB CAMERAS AND MICROPHONES AND THEY HAVEN'T BEEN ASKING FOR IT BECAUSE THEY'RE TRYING TO ENSURE THEIR STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS OR THEY'RE PUSHING THEIR STUDENTS TO MAKE SURE THEIR VOICES ARE HEARD, THAT THEY RECEIVE THE TECHNOLOGY THEY NEED SO OUR FACULTY ARE NOT COMING FORWARD AS WILLINGLY AS THEY'RE ENCOURAGING OUR STUDENTS TO.
SO I THINK THERE IS SOME CONCERN OVER THE TECHNOLOGY NEEDS.
AND, THE OTHER CONCERN JUST THE WORK IT'S TAKING RIGHT NOW TO CONVERT ALL THESE COURSES.
AND I THINK THE EMOTIONAL STRAIN, THE MENTAL STRAIN, EVERYONE IS A LITTLE BIT UNCERTAIN NOW AND PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO REALLY WORRY ABOUT THE FALL SEMESTER.
HE WOULD SAY THAT A LOT OF FACULTY ARE OKAY NOT COMING BACK, JUST FOR THE PURE SAFETY OF IT, THERE ARE THOSE READY TO GET BACK TO NORMAL.
AND, IN THE MIDDLE, THERE IS A LOT OF FOLKS WHO WERE HOPING TO ENSURE THEY HAVE THE APPROPRIATE RESOURCES TO MEET THEIR INSTITUTES' NEEDS.
>> NOW WE WILL GO TO KATHY HOGUE.
>> I'M SORRY, I HAD MY HAND RAISED.
>> I'M SORRY, LET ME GO BACK TO VERONICA, THE FACULTY, AND THEN KATHY.
WHILE APRIL WAS TALKING, SOMETHING CAME TO MIND THAT FACULTY HAS NOT MENTIONED BUT I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT FOR US TO CONSIDER WITH OUR HEALTH SERVICES.
I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT FOR HEALTH SERVICES TO BE TRAINED TO HANDLE ANY POSSIBLE COVID19 CASE, TO KEEP THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY SAFE.
I WOULDN'T WANT ANYBODY TO LOSE THEIR JOB IF THEY ARE NOT TRAINED IN HEALTH SERVICES BUT THAT THEY, AT LEAST, ARE AWARE OF HOW TO HANDLE A CASE, IN CASE THERE IS A CASE.
THAT'S TOO MANY "CASES" IN THAT SENTENCE, SORRY ABOUT THAT.
>> ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU, VERONICA.
MISS HOGUE, ARE YOU THERE? YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR ANY FEEDBACK?
[00:45:04]
OKAY, WELL, WE'LL GO BACK TO HER, IF SHE IS TAKING A LITTLE BREAK, WE WILL GO BACK TO HER COMMENTS AND THOUGHTS LATER ON.SO ANYTHING ELSE? ANY OF THE OTHER VPS HAVE ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR PERSPECTIVE THEY WANT TO ADD BEFORE THE TRUSTEES START TALKING ABOUT IT?
SO, COMMENTS, THOUGHTS, REACTIONS? ANYBODY WANTS TO GO FIRST?
>> I'LL START REAL QUICK TALK ABOUT AT A MINIMUM, I WANT TO THANK YOU DR. FIERRO AND VICE PRESIDENTS FOR SPENDING EXTRA TEAM ON THIS.
IT HAS BEEN, I'M SURE, AN ENORMOUS TASK TO TRY TO WEIGH OUT THE NEEDS OF DIFFERENT FACULTY MEMBERS IN VARIOUS CLASSES IN THE CONTEXT OF SOMETHING THAT NONE OF US WISH WE HAD TO CONTEMPLATE RIGHT NOW.
AND PEOPLE ALL ACROSS THE WORLD, ALL ACROSS OUR COUNTRY AND OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES ARE MAKING THOUSANDS OF LITTLE AND LARGE ADJUSTMENTS IN ORDER TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MOVE FORWARD, AND THIS IS NOT AN EASY TASK.
SO I JUST APPRECIATE, THERE IS A LOT MORE TO DISCUSS BUT JUST FROM THE GET GO, I WANT TO APPRECIATE ALL THE WORK BEING DONE NOT ONLY FROM THE ADMINISTRATION SIDE BUT, OBVIOUSLY, AS APRIL AND OTHERS MENTIONED ON TOWN THE LINE OF FOLKS THAT HAVE TRIED TO FIGURE OUT, ON A VERY NUANCED LEVEL, HOW TO DELIVER THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF EDUCATION FOR OUR STUDENTS AND OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR STUDENTS GIVEN THE CIRCUMSTANCES NONE OF US WHICH WE WERE IN.
>> ONE PARTICULAR PHRASE THAT STOOD OUT TO ME THAT DR. FIERRO MENTIONED WE'RE NOT, AND I'M PARAPHRASING, WE'RE NOT THE FIRST TO OPEN TO BE THE FIRST, BUT TAKE A DATADRIVEN, SCIENTIFIC APPROACH, MAKING SURE WHEN WE TO OPEN IT IS THE BEST CHOSE FOR OUR STUDENTS, BECAUSE WE CAN'T KEEP LOOKING TO THE PAST AND SAY THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE TO RETURN TO.
WE HAVE TO, YOU KNOW, GO WITH WHAT IS OCCURRING RIGHT NOW AND WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN FOR A THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE FOR OUR STUDENTS.
SO, YOU KNOW, OPENING UP WHENEVER THAT DOES HAPPEN, IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT TIME, NOT BECAUSE IT'S THE THING THAT WE WANT TO DO TO LOOK LIKE WE ARE OPEN AND EVERYTHING IS PERFECTLY FINE SO THANK YOU FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED IN THIS PROCESS TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS IS A DELIBERATIVE PROCESS AND NOT A KNEEJERK REACTION TO ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN OUR COMMUNITY.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO MAKING IT HAPPEN AS SOON AS IT IS THE RIGHT TIME, SO THANK YOU.
>> YES, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, TRUSTEE LEWIS.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS, QUESTIONS? I CAN'T SEE THE HAND BEING RAISED, SORRY.
AID COMMENT TWO DIFFERENT TOPICS.
HOW ARE WE GOING TO APPROACH CLASSES THAT REQUIRE A LAB, LIKE CHEMISTRY, BIOLOGY YEAR ANY OTHER CLASS, MAYBE COMPUTER SCIENCE, HOW WOULD WE APPROACH THOSE TYPE OF COURSES IS ONE.
THE OTHER ONE IS MORE FROM A PUBLIC HEALTH STANDPOINT, AS YOU START LETTING PEOPLE ON CAMPUS, I AGREE WITH I BELIEVE ONE OF THE FACULTY WHO MENTIONED OUR HEALTH, I GUESS OUR MEDICAL CENTER ON CAMPUS, WHEN WOULD BE CAN YOU TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT TESTING OF STUDENTS, FACULTY, ARE WE JUST RELYING ON, SAY, STAFF, YOU KNOW, CAMPUS STAFF USING THEIR INSURANCE OR WILL WE HAVE ANYTHING ON CAMPUS.
A LOT OF QUESTIONS COME UP, HOW COULD WE DEAL WITH A SICK STUDENT, ONE WHO IS UNINSURED, A SICK FACULTY MEMBER OR CSCA MEMBER.
[00:50:06]
I'M SURE THESE TOPICS ARE DISCUSSED IN A STATEWIDE LEVEL.>> WHEN I SAY LAB CLASSES, I MEAN ONLY THE LAB COMPONENT OF THOSE COURSES.
THE LECTURE BASE WE STILL PROPOSED TO CONTINUE TO BE DELIVERED ONLINE.
THE LECTURE BASE, THE LAB BASE IS WHAT WE ARE PROPOSING TO DELIVER ON CAMPUS, PRACTICING SOCIAL DISTANCING.
AND ONE OF THE PIECES WE HAVE DISCUSSED IS REDUCING THE LAB SEED FROM 24 TO 10 STUDENTS.
SO THERE WILL BE SOME SPACE IN BETWEEN AND WE DON'T HAVE TOO MANY PEOPLE IN ONE ROOM.
THE ROOMS WILL BE SANITIZED MORE FREQUENTLY.
WE WILL ASK PARTICIPANTS TO WEAR GLOVES AND FACE COVERS, BUT FACE COVERS OBVIOUSLY FOR SURE.
SO, WE'RE TRYING TO STOCK UP IN MANY OF THOSE.
WE CANNOT PROVIDE THEM ALL THE TEAM FOR EVERYONE, OBVIOUSLY, IN THE EVENT A STUDENT OR FACULTY DIDN'T HAVE THEM THAT DAY, WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO OFFER SOME OF THOSE TO PROVIDE THAT LEVEL OF EXTRA PROTECTION.
AS PART OF THE SOCIAL DISTANCING, UNLESS YOU'RE WAITING FOR YOUR CLASS AND GETTING IN AND OUT, WE'RE NOT EXPECTING TO HAVE ANYONE HANGING AROUND CAMPUS.
WE LOVE TO HAVE EVERYONE ON CAMPUS, OUR CAMPUS IS VERY CONDUCIVE TO THAT AND ALL OF US NEEDS THAT BUT WE CAN'T HAVE PEOPLE STATIONARY IN ONE PLEASE, AN ACCUMULATION OF PEOPLE, BECAUSE IT GETS DIFFICULT TO MONITOR ANY SOCIAL DISTANCING.
IT KIND OF LIKE WHAT WAS HAPPENING LAST WEEK, IT WOULD OPEN AND EVERYONE WAS HANGING AROUND, BUT IT IS NOT A STATIONARY TYPE OF ACTIVITIES.
THE ONLY STATIONARY TYPE OF ACTIVITY WILL BE THE LABS.
AND, AGAIN, WE WILL FOLLOW THOSE GUIDELINES BEFORE WE OPEN, IN WHICH CASE WE WILL MAKE THE SPECIFIC ACCOMMODATIONS.
FOR NOW, TO ADDRESS ANY POTENTIAL EMPLOYEES, INCLUDING ME, ALL OF US, ARE CHECKING ON THE GUIDELINES FROM L.A.
COUNTY, SO WE HAVE A SET OF FIVE QUESTIONS THAT WE ARE ASKING EVERYONE TO ANSWER BEFORE THEY COME TO CAMPUS.
AND THOSE FIVES QUESTIONS ARE, DO YOU HAVE A FEVER? YOU HAVE A COUGH? SHORT BREATH? HAVE YOU LOST TASTE AND SMELL RECENTLY? AND YOU HAVE BEEN OUT OF THE COUNTRY? AND, THEY HAVE TO, AT THIS TIME, WE'RE ASKING THEM TO SELF REPORT THOSE PIECES.
WE ALSO ORDERED LASER THERMOMETERS TO BEGIN IMPLEMENTING TEMPERATURE CHECKS, SOME OF OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES AND SO ON HAVE BEEN DOING RECENTLY.
IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT ON A LARGER SCALE, WE WILL HAVE TO DEVELOP A PROCEDURE ON CAMPUS TO DETERMINE WHO AND HOW THOSE THINGS ARE DONE.
IF WE'RE GOING TO TRAY TO DO THAT BEFORE CLASS, THAT WILL BE A DISCUSSION THAT WE HAVE TO HAVE BECAUSE IT IS GOING TO BE COMPLICATED.
FLIGHT, WE'RE JUST SIMPLY ASKING IF SOMEONE IS REPORTING FEVER OR SHORTNESS OF BREATH OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT TO STAY HOME, AND TO USE THE COVID19 LEAVE, ALL OF US HAVE 80 HOURS TO USE IN THOSE PARTICULAR CASES BEFORE YOU EVEN GET INTO ANY PERSONAL LEAVE OR VACATION OR SICK LEAVE THAT WE HAVE.
EVERYONE THAT HAS REPORTED THAT ON CAMPUS HAS BEEN TESTED ON THE COUNTY LEVEL, SO WE HAVE A NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES THAT HAVE RECEIVED TESTS RECENTLY AND THEY HAVE BEEN NEGATIVE.
TO MY KNOWLEDGE THERE HAS BEEN ONLY ONE EMPLOYEE REPORTED A POSITIVE TEST AND WE COMMUNICATED THAT TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY.
AN IDEAL SITUATION, GOING FORWARD, MAYBE CLOSER TO THE FALL OR AT SOME POINT WHEN THERE IS MORE AVAILABILITY THAT IS MORE ACCESSIBLE, I WOULD LIKE TO BRING THE POSSIBILITY TO THE BOARD TO POTENTIALLY ACQUIRE SOME OF THE ANTIBODY TESTS SO WE CAN
[00:55:04]
ADMINISTER SOME OF THOSE.THE REASON FOR THAT IS TO TRY TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT THERE IS A LEVEL OF IMMUNITY, AT LEAST OF WHAT IS KNOWN UP TO THIS POINT, THE SCIENTIFIC POINT OF VIEW, ON THE FRONT LINE, THOSE THAT HAVE A LOT OF CONTACT WITH EITHER COMMUNITY OF STUDENTS, OBVIOUSLY THAT INCLUDES THE COUNSELORS, SOME MORE CLASS FROM THE FRONT LINE AND SO ON WE COULD POTENTIALLY DO THE TEST TO TRY TO TRACE OR APPLAUD SOME LEVEL OF IMMUNITY AND UNDERSTAND WHAT COULD POTENTIALLY HAPPEN IN OUR CAMPUS AND WHO COULD BE CLEAR TO WORK.
THAT IS UNDER THE ASSUMPTION, YOU DEVELOP SOME LEVEL OF LONGTERM IMMUNITY WHICH YOU KNOW BETTER THAN I DO, AT THIS POINT.
IT IS NOT CLEAR IF IT IS LONGTERM OR SHORTTERM, BUT AS THAT BECOMES A LITTLE MORE AVAILABLE, IT IS SOMETHING I WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS WITH THE BOARD AS WE GET CLOSER TO THAT POINT.
I THINK AS WE MOVE TOWARDS HAVING STUDENTS ON CAMPUS, I THINK WE'LL NEED TO HAVE A PLAN IN TERMS OF, YOU KNOW, AT THIS POINT I FEEL A LOT OF OUR FACULTY AND CSEA, SORRY, WORKERS, THEY HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE BUT WE STILL HAVE THE PART TIMES, RIGHT, WHO MIGHT NOT HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE.
THEN WE HAVE STUDENTS WHO MAY NOT HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE SO I THINK WE'LL NEED DISCUSS AS WE GET CLOSER TO HAVING STUDENTS ON CAMPUS, HOW WHAT WILL WE HAVE AVAILABLE TO THEM AND HOW WILL WE BE A RESOURCE.
AND IF THEY DEVELOP SYMPTOMS OR, YOU KNOW, WHAT DO WE DO WHEN WE'RE ON CAMPUS.
>> YEAH, WE CAN CONTINUE TO DISCUSS THOSE PIECES AND OBVIOUSLY MADE THOSE PLANS AVAILABLE AS WE DECIDE HOW TO REOPEN.
I THINK WHAT SEEMS HARD RIGHT NOW THAT IS MAKING THE DECISION OF REOPENING THE CAMPUS AND HOW, I THINK WHAT IS GOING TO BECOME MORE COMPLICATED, THE LOGISTICS BEHIND OPENING, EVEN ON THE SMALLEST SCALE AT THIS POINT.
WE WILL OBVIOUSLY HAVE THOSE CONVERSATIONS AND KEEP THOSE POINTS IN MIND BECAUSE THEY ARE ONE, FAIRLY IMPORTANT AT THIS TIME, AND GOOD RECOMMENDATIONS.
>> I WANT TO SHARE SOME OF MY EXPERIENCE AS A COMPUTER SCIENCE INSTRUCTOR.
SO, I DO TEACH PROGRAMMING AND I TEACH ADVANCED PROGRAMMING, I HAVE THREE DIFFERENT ADVANCED PROGRAMMING CLASSES.
SO MY EXPERIENCE IS HERE IS THIS, OKAY.
BOTH TEACHERS AND STUDENTS NEED TO TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR HARDWARE.
SO, WHEN WE START MARCH 16, I HAVE STUDENTS CANNOT RUN THEIR PROGRAM ON THEIR LAPTOP BECAUSE WE HAVE TO, YOU KNOW, OUR PROGRAM REQUIRES MEMORY.
SO WE HAVE SO I STILL HAVE SOME STUDENTS, HAVE SOME GOOD STUDENTS.
THEY GET ON THE CLASS, JUST LISTEN, BUT THEY CANNOT DO THE PROGRAM ON THEIR OWN LAPTOP, SO THAT'S THE, YOU KNOW, FOR THAT, IT'S A CHALLENGE.
THE GOOD THING IS, CLASSROOM ZOOM IS ALLOWED TO DO THE RECORDING SO STUDENTS COMING LATE AND LEAVING EARLY, NOT IN THE ACTUAL WHAT YOU RECOLLECT JUST TALK ABOUT.
BUT FOR THE ZOOM, EVERYTHING IS RECORDED AND THERE IS A TRANSCRIPT, TOO.
I RECEIVE THE TRANSCRIPT AND ONE DAY LATER SOME, SOMETIMES HALF DAY LATER.
I LIKE THE OTHER THING IS, WE CAN SHARE OUR SCREENS SO, THE STUDENTS, YOU KNOW, I GOT A MISTAKE, SO I JUST SEE THE STUDENT SCREEN I'M ABLE TO SO I THINK IT IS CLOSER RIGHT NOW.
SOME STUDENTS ACTUALLY SAY I LIKE THIS WAY, BUT IT TAKES, IT IS A CHALLENGE, THAT'S JUST MY EXPERIENCE.
[01:00:01]
YES.>> SO I KNOW THE CAMPUS IS MAKING EFFORTS TO PROMOTE AND EMBRACE ACADEMIC FREEDOM IN GIVING IT'S THE CHOICE TO TEACH THE COURSES ASYNCHRONOUSLY OR SYNCHRONOUSLY.
I'M HOPING THERE IS FLEXIBILITY IN GIVING FACULTY THE CHOICE TO RETURN TO CAMPUS OR NOT, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO LABS WHERE THAT IS IMPORTANT FOR THERE TO BE FACETOFACE ENGAGEMENT.
I KNOW THAT SOME ARE GETTING CREATIVE, WHERE THEY ARE HOPING TO RECORD THEIR LABS, AND PROVIDE THAT RECORDING ONLINE TO THEIR STUDENTS.
AND' SIGNING STUDENTS TO BUY MATERIALS FOR A HOME LAB SO THEY CAN CONDUCT THOSE LABS AT HOME.
ALSO, THERE WAS A MENTION OF PART TEAM FACULTY OF NOT BEING INSURED, THERE IS A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF THEM NOT BEING INSURED.
MY HOPE IS HEALTH CARE SERVICES CAN PROVIDE INSURANCE TO THE FACULTY HIKE THE STUDENTS.
THERE IS THE AFT, AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS RECOMMENDATION WE HAVE PLACED IN INFRASTRUCTURE AND RESOURCES TO TEST, TRACE AND ISOLATE NEW CASES.
I ALSO HAVE THE CONCERN OF PROVIDING TESTING TO THOSE WHO DO NOT DISPLAY SYMPTOMS. THOSE ARE ASYMPTOMATIC, AND I'M WONDERING IF WE CAN REQUIRE FACULTY TO BE TESTED, JUST LIKE WE HAD FOR A HEPATITIS TEST, SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
VERONICA, AS WE GET CLOSER TO REOPENING, WE CAN OBVIOUSLY ALWAYS EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITY OF THE TESTING.
YOU MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR EVERYONE, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET A TEST AT SOME POINT.
IF YOU ARE SYMPTOMATIC, YOU WILL HAVE LESS PRIORITY, BUT THEORETICALLY, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET A TEST RIGHT NOW AT ANY OF THE L.A.
THE ISSUE WITH THE TEST THAT L.A.
COUNTY IS OFFERING IS IT IS A TEST FOR THOSE WHO HAVE ACTIVE CORONAVIRUS, TESTING WHETHER OR NOT YOU'RE SICK.
SO LET'S SAY I GO AND TEST TODAY AND MY RESULTS COME BACK IN TWO WEEKS THAT SAYS, I'M NEGATIVE, I WAS NEGATIVE TWO WEEKS AGO WHEN I RECEIVED THAT TEST.
THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT I'M HELP TODAY.
WHAT I'M HOPING WE CAN DO, MOVING INTO THE FUTURE, IS EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITY OF THE ANTIBODY TEST.
SOME OF THOSE TESTS ARE AVAILABLE, THEY HAVE DIFFERENT OPINION AND THE VALIDITY OF THOSE TESTS RIGHT NOW, BUT WITH EVERYTHING GETS VETTED OVER TIME.
SO THOSE TESTS ARE A LITTLE MORE USEFUL FOR US AS AN INSTITUTION IF WE'RE GOING TO END UP REQUIRING TO YOU TAKE THE TEST BECAUSE THAT COULD TELL YOU IF YOU WERE EXPOSED AND SCIENTIFICALLY WE'RE ABLE TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT THE IMMUNITY IS LONGTERM IMMUNITY.
THAT HAS THE VALIDITY OF A PERIOD OF TEAM.
LIKE THE TB TEST, OR IF YOU HAVE BEEN VACCINATED, FOR INSTANCE, YOU WILL ALWAYS ESSENTIALLY BE NEGATIVE BECAUSE OF THE TERM.
THAT IS A TEST I WOULD HIKE US TO HAVE A CONVERSATION IN THE FUTURE AS WE RETURN INTO THE CAMPUS, BECAUSE IT IS NOT TELLING WHETHER ANY ONE OF US ACTUALLY RIGHT NOW HAVE HAD OR CURRENTLY HAVE COVID19 AND THERE IS SPECIFIC SIGNS AND YOU GET A POSITIVE TEST.
OTHER THAN THAT, WE CAN BE ASYMPTOMATIC, BEING EXPOSED, AND WE WILL NEED THAT ANTIBODY TEST TO MAKE THAT DETERMINATION, SO THAT IS A GOOD POINT.
THE MODEL OF COMING BACK TO CAMPUS WITH THE CTE COURSES AND HEALTH COURSES IS IN CONSULTATION WITH MANY OF THE FACULTY IN THOSE DEPARTMENTS.
MANY OF THEM ARE THE INDIVIDUALS PROPOSING THE MODELS TO COME TO CAMPUS,
[01:05:02]
PROPOSING THE MODIFICATIONS OF COME INTO CAMPUS.AND OF COURT WE WILL ALLOW MODIFICATIONS TO GO, YOU KNOW, FEEL COMFORTABLE BUT SO FAR THE FACULTY HAS BEEN VERY OPEN TO THOSE CONVERSATIONS.
I BROUGHT A NUMBER OF IDEAS AS TO HOW WE COULD POTENTIALLY DO THOSE, PATIENTS OF THE STUDENTS, THE CAPACITY, IN FACT, IT HAS BEEN RESISTANCE ALMOST FROM MY PART TO SAY, YES, I LIKE WHAT YOU'RE SAYING BUT IT IS A LITTLE TOO EARLY FOR THAT, LET'S DO ONE STEP AT A TIME.
SO THEY'VE BEEN VERY GOOD ON THAT REGARD.
NOW, ON RELATIONS WITH FACULTY, LECTURES, THERE IS A LITTLE LESS FLEXIBILITY THERE AT THIS POINT, TRADITIONALLY I WOULD BE OPEN TO A LOT OF CONVERSATION IN THAT AREA, BUT AT THIS POINT, THOSE THAT ARE IN THE LECTURE COURSES WE ARE ASKING THEM TO REMAIN ONLINE.
MANY OF THEM, OBVIOUSLY, WANT TO STAY ONLINE FOR THE TIME BEING AND I KNOW SOME OF THEM WANT TO COME TO CAMPUS LIKE MANY OF US BUT WE CAN'T AFFORD AT THIS POINT TO HAVE A HIGH LEVEL OF TRAFFIC ON THE CAMPUS.
ONE, WE DON'T KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN AS MORE PEOPLE BEGIN GETTING OUT OF THE STAY AT HOME ORDERS, AND TWO, WE DON'T HAVE THE CAPACITY TO SANITIZE MULTIPLE AREAS OF THE CAMPUS AT THE SAME TIME.
>> I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE INSIGHT, SINCE MOST ON CAMPUS HAVE KEIZER,IZAR IS STILL FOLLOWING CDC GUIDELINES.
WHICH MEANS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE SYMPTOMS, YOU CANNOT GET A TEST.
WE DON'T HAVE ANTIBODY TESTING YET.
EVEN IF YOU'RE YOUNG AND HEALTHY, YOU CAN'T GET A TEST, ONLY IF YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS AND YOU ARE A FIRSTLINE RESPONDER, SO JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE YOU KNEW.
COUNTY IS DOING A LITTLE BIT MORE WIDESPREAD TESTING, BUT I BELIEVE YOU STILL HAVE TO HAVE SYMPTOMS TO GET TESTING AT L.A.
KEIZER TESTING, IT TAKES ABOUT 24 HOURS SO IT CAN BE A RESOURCE.
I KNOW THINGS KEEP CHANGING, BUT SO FAR KEIZER HAS BEEN PRETTY STEADY IN TERMS OF WHO THEY'RE TESTING.
A LOT OF IT HAS TO DO WITH LACK OF TESTING SO IT IS A GREAT IDEA TO, DOWN THE LINE, PROVIDE TESTING AND COVID TESTING AND IT WILL BE IMPROVING AS TIME GOES ON.
I WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW, YOU CAN'T REALLY GET A TEST, KEIZER OR L.A.
COUNTY, IF YOU DON'T HAVE SYMPTOMS.
>> JUST TO CONFIRM THAT, I HAVE A GOT SOME CLOSE FAMILY THAT HAVE ALL OF SYMPTOMS OF CORONAVIRUS BUT WERE NOT AGE TO GET THE TESTING BECAUSE THEY WERE UNDER 30 YEARS OF AGE.
YOU HAVE TO HAVE >> EVEN IF YOU LOOK LIKE TOUGH BUT UNLIKELY TO DIE.
>> OVER 65, HAVE CANCER, DIABETES, SOME KIND OF AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE, SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU AT RISK OF HAVING A BAD OUTCOME.
YOU'RE RIGHT, IF YOU'RE YOUNG AND HEALTHY, BETWEEN SYMPTOMS, AND YOU'RE NOT A FIRSTLINE RESPONDER, WE'RE STILL NOT GOING TO TEST YOU.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS FROM ANY OTHER TRUSTEES, MOVING ON? I DON'T SEE ANYBODY ELSE.
OKAY, SO I HAVE A COUPLE OF COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS.
I THINK THE FIRST THING I JUST WANT TO ECHO EVERYBODY'S THANKS AND GRATITUDE FOR EVERYBODY AT THE COLLEGE FOR ALL THEIR THOUGHT AND INPUT AND THEIR WORK INTO THIS DISCUSSION.
I WANT TO JUST ACKNOWLEDGE THE SADNESS OF THIS ALL.
I THINK, FOR ME, I DON'T KNOW WHAT WEEK WE'RE ON, BUT FOR ME, THIS WEEK, THAT'S WHERE I FEEL LIKE I'M AT, A VERY SAD POINT RIGHT NOW, JUST REALIZING THE IMPACTS ON PEOPLE'S FAMILIES.
THAT HAS KIND OF HIT ME, AND I THINK ESPECIALLY THE IMPACTS ON MY CHILDREN'S EDUCATION.
I KNOW HOW HARD IT IS I SEE THEM EVERY DAY, SOME ON GOOGLE MEET, THEY'RE WORKING
[01:10:07]
3:00, 4:00 IN THE MORNING ON THEIR LESSON.I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT, IT IS OKAY TO TALK ABOUT THESE THINGS AND WHAT THEY'RE FEELING IS SHARED BY OTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY.
I GUESS MY ONE CONCERN IS ABOUT SOME OF THE STEM LABS.
I GUESS MY CONCERN IS COMING FROM THE NUMBER ONE CLASSES I GET CONCERNS ABOUT ARE STEM LABS, RIGHT? CAN'T GET INTO MY LAB, I CAN'T GET THIS CLASS, I CAN'T GET PHYSICS, ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY TOMORROW HEAR WE MAY HAVE TO HAVE A SMALLER AMOUNT OF STUDENTS IN THE LAB CLASSES, I WOULD LIKE FOR US TO PUT SOME MORE THOUGHT INTO THAT.
BECAUSE, AGAIN, I ALSO SEE THIS PANDEMIC AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENCOURAGE MORE OF OUR YOUNG ADULTS TO STUDY STEM.
THERE IS A NEED FOR IT, AND WE SHOULD BE DOING OUR PART TO ENCOURAGE STUDENTS IN THAT FIELD.
I DEFINITELY WOULD LIKE FOR EVERYBODY TO TAKE A LOOK AT THAT AGAIN TO SEE IF THERE IS DEMAND FOR STUDENTS WHO NEED THOSE CLASSES, ESPECIALLY FOR THE NURSING PROFESSION THAT NEEDS TO BE A PRIORITY FOR OUR CAMPUS AND OUR COMMUNITY.
THAT WOULD BE MY FIRST CAN YOU LOOK BACK AT THAT ISSUE.
THE OTHER ISSUE, IT KIND OF RELATES TO THE OUR HEALTH OCCUPATIONS.
THE OTHER ISSUE, I THINK EACH IF YOU SOME OF OUR HEALTH OCCUPATION STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO GO BACK INTO THE LAB, I DON'T KNOW THAT THAT NECESSARILY IMPROVES THEIR SITUATION FOR THE ACTUAL HOURS THEY NEED ON THE CLINICAL SIDE.
EVEN IF WE OFFER THE LAB, IF THEY CAN'T GET THE HOURS THEY NEED IN THE CLINICAL STUDY THAT WILL NOT HELP THEM COMPETE, SUCCEED AND GRADUATE.
THAT IS AN AREA WE NEED TO PUT A LITTLE MORE FOCUS IN ON, AS WELL.
THE OTHER KIND OF QUESTION I HAD WAS WHAT ABOUT SO THOSE ARE LIKE MY STUDENT QUESTIONS.
MY EMPLOYEE CONCERNS ARE THIS.
WHAT ABOUT, ARE EMPLOYEES WHO HAVE PREEXISTING CONDITIONS, KIND OF THE ONES THAT DR. SALAZAR MEANT, THOSE WHO ARE OLDER, THOSE WHO ARE NOT ABLE TO SAFELY RETURN AND TEACH IN PERSON, AGAIN, I THINK WE NEED TO LOOK AT THAT ISSUE A LITTLE BIT MORE AND IF WE NEED TO MAKE SOME SORT OF ADJUSTMENT, ACCOMMODATIONS, THAT IS A GROUP OF EMPLOYEES I WANT TO BE PARTICULARLY MINDFUL AS WE MOVE FORWARD ON THIS.
I THINK THE LAST, IT IS RANDOM, BUT NOT RANDOM IS WHAT ABOUT THAT STUDENT PARKING FEE.
I THINK THAT'S THE OTHER QUESTION I'VE GOTTEN A LOT OF IS, WHY HAVEN'T WE BEEN ABLE TO REFUND OUR STUDENTS PARKING FEE WHEN THEY PAID FOR IT IN SPRING AND THEY DIDN'T GET TO USE IT, SO I'M SURE THERE IS A GOOD REASON, BUT IF THERE IS ANYWAY WE CAN PARTIALLY GIVE THEM A CREDIT FOR THE NEXT WHATEVER, NEXT SEMESTER, HOWEVER WE DO THE PARKING FEE.
NOT SAYING WE NEED TO REFUND THEM BUT IT WOULD BE NICE IF WE'RE ABLE TO FINANCIALLY AFFORD IT, TO GIVE THEM SOME SORT OF CREDIT OR DISCOUNTED FOR THE NEXT SEMESTER OF PARKING.
FOR ME, THAT IS THE NUMBER ONE QUESTION, COMPLAINT, COMMENT I SEEM TO BE GETTING IS THE PARKING FEE.
AGAIN, THIS GOES BACK TO FURTHER SUPPORT SOME OF THE CHALLENGES OUR STUDENTS ARE FACING.
WHAT IS THE PARKING FEE, IS IT $40? WHAT'S THE PARKING FEE NOW?
>> DEPENDS ON THE STUDENT STATUS, IT COULD BE 30 OR 40.
>> SO $40, I MEAN, SO $40 IS A MEAL IN MY FAMILY, BUT IT IS A LOT FOR SOME OF OUR STUDENTS SO HE WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO TAKE A LOOK AT THAT AGAIN, SOME SORT OF CREDIT OR PARTIAL CREDIT FOR THE NEXT SEMESTER.
THE ONLY OTHER QUESTION, WE KIND OF TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT IT, TOO, IS THE TECHNOLOGY, THE INTERNET CONNECTIVITY.
I KNOW WE HAVE INVESTED A LOT IN HOT SPOTS, IS THAT STILL A CHALLENGE FOR STUDENTS TO GET WIFI OR CONNECTIVITY TO COMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS, I THINK THAT IS ANOTHER ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE CONSIDERED, TRANSITIONING TO SUMMER AND FALL, THAT IS MORE THAN A FEW WEEKS TO NOT WORK ON MY PHONE BE OR USING OTHER PEOPLE'S WIFI SO THAT
[01:15:05]
WOULD BE ANOTHER AREA THAT I WOULD LIKE TO DO.THEN, THE OTHER THING, TOO, I WOULD LIKE SOME CLARIFICATION, MAYBE FOR OUR NEXT MEETING, FROM THE EMPLOYMENT SIDE.
YOU MENTIONED THAT THEY HAVE COVID19 COVID HOURS THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE BEFORE THEY USE THE OTHER LEAVE, MAYBE YOU COULD MAP IT OUT, WRITE IT DOWN FOR THE TRUSTEES SO WE HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING IF OUR EMPLOYEES ARE SICK, SHOW SYMPTOMS, DON'T SHOW SYMPTOMS BUT THEY FEEL THEY CANNOT COME TO EMPLOYMENT BECAUSE OF THAT, WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT STEPS OR WHAT'S THE DIFFERENT AMOUNT OF LEAVE THAT THEY HAVE TO GO THROUGH BEFORE IT STARTS COUNTING AGAINST THEM.
I WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU DR. FIERRO, IN RETROSPECT, IF I WOULD HAVE KNOWN IN FIVE YEARS, WE WOULD HAVE CHOSEN LIKE YOU, VETERINARIAN, AND IT IS COMFORTING TO KNOW WE HAVE A COLLEGE BEING LED BY SOMEBODY MAKING DECENT DECISIONS IN SCIENCE.
WE DIDN'T KNOW THAT RIGHT NOW BUT NOW YOU'RE WORTH EVERY PENNY WE'RE PAYING YOU, SO THANK YOU.
BUT IT IS NOT A SOLO SPORT, IT IS TAKING A LOT OF ENERGY AN WORK FOR EVERYBODY SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE COMMENT AND RECOGNITION.
SOMETIMES I ANNOY MOST WITH MY EXPLANATIONS BUT EVERYBODY HAS BEEN HELP ENVELOPE GUIDING ME WITH THE PROCESS.
LET ME SEE IF I CAN ANSWER MOST OF THE QUESTIONS THAT YOU WERE MENTIONING THERE.
WE'RE STILL WORKING ON THE SIDE OF THE LABS, SO WE WILL HAVE TO RUN THE LABS MORE TIMES TO COVER 100% OF THE STUDENTS.
AS OF RIGHT NOW, WE ARE NOT SEEING A DECLINE IN ENROLLMENT OR PRELIMINARY NUMBERS FOR THE FALL, FOR THE SUMMER SEMESTER.
IT SHOWS ENROLLMENT ABOUT ON PAR WITH LAST SUMMER, SO IT SEEMS STUDENTS ARE ENROLLING.
SO, IT IS EARLY TO TELL, OBVIOUSLY, WE STILL HAVE ABOUT ONE QUARTER OF OUR ENROLLMENT TO BE MATERIALIZED ON THE SUMMER, SO THINGS COULD CHANGE.
AND WE WILL COULD SEE A DECLINE AS WE GET CLOSER TO THE BEGINNING OF THE SUMMER SEMESTER.
RIGHT NOW, FROM POINT TO POINT, WE SEEM TO HAVE SAME TYPE OF ENROLLMENT AS WE DID LAST SUMMER, WHICH IS GOOD NEWS.
THE BAD NEWS IS WHEN WE COME TO CAMPUS, WE WILL HAVE TO BE VERY MINDFUL AS TO HOW WE ACCOMMODATE THOSE STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO DO THE SOCIAL DISTANCING AND TO STILL SERVE AS MANY STUDENTS SO WE NEED TO DEVELOP A PLAN WE PROBABLY HAVE TO RUN BE THE LABS LONGER, WORK WITH FACULTY AND THEIR TAS TO DETERMINE HOW WE START THOSE CLASSES AND WHAT WILL THEY NEED IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO SERVE THAT NUMBER OF STUDENTS.
IN THE CASE OF CHEMISTRY, ANATOMY, AND SOME OF THE HIGHDEMAND COURSES ON SEM, I HAVE NOTHING BUT COMPLIMENTS TO OUR FACULTY WHO TEACH THOSE COURSES.
THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE NEARLY EVERY SINGLE LAB EXPERIENCE ON LINE AT THIS PARTICULAR POINT.
SO THEY HAVE NOT CUT THEY ACCESS TOWARDS STUDENTS.
IN FACT, THEY ARE OFFERING SOME OF THOSE SAME CLASSES IN THE SUMMER AND MAKING THE ACCOMMODATIONS NEEDED.
SO, TIM MY HAT TO THEM BECAUSE THEY REALLY STEPPED IT UP TO DO THAT SO FOR INSTANCE, JEFF OR CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR, IT IS FANTASTIC.
I HAVE HAD A NUMBER OF CONVERSATIONS VIA EMAIL WITH THEM RECENTLY.
YOU DIDN'T MARY THIS FROM ME OR ANYONE ELSE, SOMEHOW THEY MANAGED TO GRAB SOME THINGS, I DON'T KNOW FROM WHERE, AND HE'S DOING VIDEOS AND REPRODUCE THE LAB EXPERIENCES FOR THE STUDENTS AT HOME.
NOT JUST JEFF BUT ALL OF THEM HAVE REALLY STEPPED UP TO MAKE THOSE LAB EXPERIENCES FOR THE STUDENTS.
SO AT THIS TIME, I DON'T SEE AN ISSUE WITH ACCESS OR THE ISSUE IS GOING TO BE THE LOGISTICS TO SERVE EVERYONE AND ROTATE THEM.
THAT'S WHY WHEN I SAID THE LABS I WAS THINKING IT MAY NOT BE EVERY LAB, WE MAY
[01:20:04]
HAVE TO ROTATE THE STUDENTS DURING THE OFF WEEKS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT TO BE ABLE TO SERVE THEM ALL.SO WE WILL WORK ON LOGISTICS WITH THEM TO DO THAT.
THE SECOND QUESTION WAS ON EMPLOYEES.
SO, EMPLOYEES ARE IN A HIGH RISKS, THOSE ARE THE EMPLOYEES WE ASKED FIRST TO LEAVE AND PROBABLY THE LAST ONES WE WILL ASK THEM TO COME BACK.
OBVIOUSLY, WE DO NOT WANT TO GET ANYONE EXPOSED, AND WE'RE ASKING THEM THE SAME WE'RE ASKING THEM IN THE BEGINNING.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF, STAY HOME, MAKE THE ACCOMMODATIONS OF WHAT YOU NEED TO DO.
BASED ON ADA WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH AN INTERACTIVE PROCESS WITH THEM TO ANALYZE THE RETURN TO WORK AND ANY ACCOMMODATIONS.
BUT, EMPLOYEES, THEY ADD PREEXISTING CONDITIONS, WHERE SOME OF THE EMPLOYEES WE ASKED FIRST TO STAY AT HOME, EVEN BEFORE WE VACATED THE CAMPUS SO IN THE FIRST ROUND.
I'M ANTICIPATING THEY WILL BE THE LAST GROUP TO COME BACK.
MOST OF EVERYONE HAS SHOWN THEY CAN DO THEIR WORK FROM HOME AND CONTINUE TO BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT THEY DO, SO WE ARE NOT NECESSARILY CONCERNED OF THEM DOING THEIR PART.
THE LAST PART OF THE QUESTION WAS ON THE STUDENT FEES, I THINK.
SO, WATCH COUPLE OF PIECES AND THAT.
THE FIRST ONE, WE RETURN PARKING OF THOSE ONCE WE CLOSE CAMPUS, OR ESSENTIALLY FOR THE SECOND NINE WEEKS, WE RETURN THOSE.
CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, BUT I THINK WE RETURN THOSE.
THE ONE THAT WE HAVE GONE BACK AND FORTH FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS IS THOSE ENTIRE SPRING SEMESTER, WHICH WILL MEAN HALF OF THE PARKING FEES.
WE TALKED ABOUT THAT, ONE WAS THE DAILY AVERAGE FOR THE STUDENTS BUT THAT COULD ESSENTIALLY CONFIRM THE 30 OR $40 BASED ON WHAT THE FEE STRUCTURE IS.
THE NEXT COMPONENT WE HAVE OF THAT, THE FINAL DETERMINATION, WHAT YOU HAD SUGGEST THE POTENTIALLY GIVE PARTIAL CREDIT, A DISCOUNT OR SOMETHING ONCE WE COME BACK.
THE ISSUE, COULD THE DAILY AVERAGE, SAY I AM A STUDENT TAKING THREE DAYS OF CLASSES, DAILY AVERAGE OF $2, HALF A SEMESTER, THAT COSTS MORE THAN THE PARKING.
SO IT MAKES IT SOMEWHAT MORE COMPLICATED TO ISSUE THE REFUND THAT WAY, BUT THE ACTUAL CREDIT, IT SHOULD BE SIMPLE TO DO AS A PERCENTAGE OF THOSE STUDENTS WHO ENROLL.
SAY WE COME BACK IN THE SPRING SEMESTER OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT, THAT IS SOMETHING WE'VE HAD CONVERSATION ABOUT BUT WE HAVE NOT MADE A FINAL DECISION.
AND THE LAST PART ON THE DIFFERENT LEAVES, WE HAVE LUCKILY SOMEONE WHO IS INCREDIBLY WELL VERSED ON THAT FROM THE TOP OF THEIR HEAD, SO I THINK ADRIANA COULD GIVE US A QUICK RUN DOWN AND PROBABLY WE COULD ALSO SEND YOU A DOCUMENT LATER WITH WHAT SHE IS GOING TO SUMMARIZE ON THE LEAVE.
ACTUALLY, HE WILL BE GLAD TO PUT TOGETHER A PRESENTATION ON HOW THE DIFFERENT NEEDS, BEGINNING WITH THE COVID19 LEAVE TO THE PERSONAL LEAVES AND EVERYTHING THAT APPLIES SO, YES, I WILL BE GLAD TO PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER FOR THE BOARD.
>> YES, THE ONLY OTHER QUESTION WAS ABOUT THE NURSING, HEALTH OCCUPATIONS AND THE NUMBER OF HOURS THEY NEED.
>> I'M SORRY THERE WERE A COUPLE OF PIECE, SO WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO IS FINISH THE, TWO PLANS WITH THAT.
THE FIRST ONE AND SOME OF OUR HEALTH OCCUPATIONS, WE HAVE SOME STUDENTS THAT HAVE
[01:25:02]
A FEW HOURS, HANDS ON HOURS THEY NEED TO FINISH.SO WE'RE GOING TO TRY WITH SOME OF THEM, BRING THEM DURING THE SUMMER TO DO SOME OF THAT WORK.
BECAUSE WITH THE THEMES AND WITH SOME SMALL GROUP EXPERIENCE, THEY HAVE THE POTENTIAL OF COMPLETING THEIR COURSE WORK BEFORE THE FALL SEMESTER, SO WE CAN TRY TO MOVE THEM FORWARD.
THE SECOND ONE, THERE IS A PUSH WITH THE NURSING FACULTY TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF SAME HOURS FROM 50 TO 57% ON SHOULD GET HELP FROM THE LOCAL HOSPITALS TO THE GET THE STUDENTS THROUGH.
THE OTHER PART IS WE HAVE STUDENTS WAITING, WE HAVEN'T ADMITTED THEM, WE HAVE A COUPLE OF SITUATIONS WE ARE CONSIDERING AWARDING EVERYONE, NOT EVERYONE ON THE WAITING LIST BUT EVERYONE WHO QUALIFIED TEMPORARY ADMISSION.
IF WE ARE ABLE TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF CLINICALS AND INCREASE THE SIMULATION HOURS AND HAVE A COUPLE OF LOCATIONS TO DO SOME OF OUR VERY EDUCATIONS, WE WILL BRING THEM IN.
IF NOT, WE WILL MOVE THE CLASS TO THE SPRING SEMESTER.
PART OF OUR CONCERN ABOUT BRINGING SOME OF THE STUDENTS WE HAVE ON CALL, SUMMER, LATE SUMMER IS BECAUSE THERE WILL BE ANOTHER CLASS COMING BEHIND THEM, AND THEN WE WILL HAVE A BOTTLE NECK AND THEN WE WILL HAVE A GAP OF A SEMESTER OR FULL YEAR WHICH WE WILL NOT HAVE STUDENTS TRANSITIONING TO SOME OF OUR COURSES.
AND A CLINICAL SEAT OPENS AND WE DON'T HAVE A STUDENT TO SEND THEM, THEY WILL ALLOCATE THE SPOTS TO SOMEONE ELSE, IT MAKES IT FOR COMPLICATED FOR THE PROGRAM TO CONTINUE TO OPERATE.
WE HAVE A COUPLE OF PLANS AND ONE IS STARTING AROUND SUM EVERY, MIGHT BE MIDDLE OF THE SUMMER TO BRING ABOARD STUDENTS FROM THE COURSES.
>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH, NOW GOING BACK TO HANDS UP, I SEE TRUSTEE ESCOBAR HAS A QUESTION OR COMMENT.
SO STUDENTS WERE STARTING TO MESSAGE ME RIGHT NOW IN THIS PARTICULAR REGARD, SO ONE OF THE STUDENTS STATED THAT THE LABS BEING REPLACED OR REMOVED ARE BEING A BIT OF A HURDLE, PARTICULARLY SUMMER LABS, THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO COMPLETE THE TRANSFER ON TIME, AND SOME OF THEM ARE SAYING THAT THEY'RE HAVING A LOT MORE WORK TO DO COMPARED TO REGULAR SCHOOL.
AND, ANOTHER STUDENT SAID THAT THERE HAS SCHOOL ITSELF WAS AN ESCAPE TO FULLY BE IMMERSED IN STUDYING AND IN THEIR CLASSES.
AT HOME THEY FEEL LIKE THEY CANNOT FULLY IMMERSE THEMSELVES IN THESE CLASSES.
AND, LASTLY, FROM JAY, SHE STATED THAT THE INTERNET, ALTHOUGH THERE HAD BEEN FREE ACCESS, THOSE WHO PAID FOR INTERNET PRIOR ARE HAVING TO PAY MORE FOR INTERNET AND PROVIDERS ARE STARTING TO RAISE UP THEIR PRICES.
>> WOW, I'M SORRY ABOUT THE INTERNET ACCESS.
WE ARE WORKING WITH A LOCAL PROVIDER TO BE ABLE TO GET HOT SPOTS.
HOT SPOTS ARE BECOMING THE NEW TOILET PAPER, DIFFICULT TO GET.
BUT WE FOUND SOMEONE THAT ADDS VALUE AND WE WILL WE'RE TRYING TO NEGOTIATE A VERY LOW PRICE ON THAT.
WE WILL GO A NUMBER OF MONTHS AHEAD OF TIME FOR THE STUDENTS AND THEN, AT THAT PRICE, I THINK IT WILL BE A LITTLE LESS OF A CHALLENGE TO MAINTAIN THE SERVICE.
IN THE NEXT DAY OR TWO, HOPEFULLY, WE WILL BE MEETING WITH THE PROVIDER AND TRY TO GET SOMETHING FINALIZED.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS, QUESTIONS? THOUGHTS? I KNOW I THINK I ALREADY GOT SHIN.
SHIN SAID I HAD ALREADY COVERED IT.
ANYBODY ELSE? DID CATHY GET BACK ON THE LINE? I DON'T KNOW IF SHE HAD ANYTHING TO SAY FROM HER PERSPECTIVE.
OKAY SO DR. FIERRO IS THIS AN ACTION ITEM? WHAT'S THE NEXT STEPS, MOVING FORWARD ON THIS?
>> WELL, THIS WAS A DISCUSSION TO GET KIND OF YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON WHETHER
[01:30:05]
OR NOT YOU WILL BE SUPPORTIVE TO AN APPROACH LIKE THIS.TOMORROW I WILL BE MEETING WITH THE LEADERSHIP GROUP THAT VALERY MENTIONED, SO IT MOST OF THE PEOPLE HERE IN THE CALL, I GUESS WE'LL FINISH COLLECTING THE FEEDBACK AND PUT SOMETHING OUT TO THE CAMPUS WITH YOUR PERMISSION AND SUPPORT, PROBABLY ON THURSDAY NIGHT OR LEGAL FRIDAY, SO GET A LITTLE BIT OF CLOSURE IN THAT.
I HAVE GOTTEN MANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT, AS I'M SURE ALL OF YOU HAVE.
I'M LOOKING FOR SOME SORT OF CONSENSUS AND SEE IF IT IS SOMETHING VIABLE FOR ALL OF YOU AND I WILL SPEAK TO THE LEADERSHIP GROUP WHICH I'M ASSUMING WHAT WE DETERMINE HERE IS ABOUT WHAT WE DISCUSS TOMORROW SINCE ALL OF US ARE HERE.
ALL RIGHT SO LET'S SEE, MAYBE WE CAN VOTE, RIGHT? CAN I DO THIS ON THIS LITTLE CHAT THING? SO IF YOU ARE GOOD WITH DR. FIERRO'S PROPOSAL, YOU CAN TYPE YES.
OR IF YOU'RE NOT, YOU CAN TYPE NO.
RIGHT? OR HIT THE LITTLE ICON AND THEN WE'LL GO FROM THERE.
SO TRUSTEE SALAZAR SAYS YES IN THE CHAT.
TRUSTEE LEWIS, WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS.
ALL RIGHT, STILL LEARNING ZOOM, TOO.
TRUSTEE CAMACHORODRIGUEZ IS A YES.
TRUSTEE SHIN IS A YES AND TRUSTEE LEWIS IS A YES, I SEE THEM NOW.
ALL RIGHT, DR. FIERRO, SO I THINK THERE IS YOUR FEET BACK.
>> THANK YOU FOR THE INPUT, THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR LISTENING AND FOR BEING SUPPORTIVE.
AVERAGE CROSS CAMPUS, WITH ALL OF YOU, AS WELL, FOR LISTENING TO EVERYONE'S INPUT.
I KNOW IT IS A DIFFICULT SITUATION AND NO DECISION IS GOING TO BE THE BEST DECISION FOR EVERYONE, BUT I THINK COLLECTIVELY, THIS IS A GOOD COURSE OF ACTION.
>> DR. FIERRO, YOU COULD JUST CLARIFY FOR THE LAB, THE LABONLY PRICER LEVEL ONE, MENTIONED THEIR CTE IN HEALTH OCCUPATION CLASSES, CAN YOU JUST GIVE US AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT THOSE DISCIPLINES OF STUDY ARE?
>> FOR INSTANCE, PHYSICAL THERAPY, NURSING, DENTAL HYGIENE, SOME EXAMPLES OF THE PROGRAMS AND OTHER HEALTH OCCUPATIONS.
CTE, AUTOMOTIVE, WOODWORKING AND A LOT OF THOSE PROGRAMS THAT REQUIRE ACTION ON A SPECIFIC MODELS AT A GIVEN TIME.
FOR EXAMPLE, OUR WOODWORKING FACULTY FOUND A WAY TO TEACH CHANCES ONLINE.
OUR WELDING FACULTY FOUND A WAY TO TEACH A COUPLE OF CLASSES ONLINE.
BUT, OBVIOUSLY, IT IS HARD TO TEACH HOW TO TAKE WELDING OR SOMETHING THROUGH OUR COMPUTER, SO THEY NEED THOSE HOURS TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT.
FOR INSTANCE, COSMETOLOGY, THEY FOUND A WAY TO DO THAT WORK BUT SOME HOURS HAVE TO BE ON CAMPUS.
A NUMBER OF PROGRAMS ACROSSTHEBOARD.
A COLLEGE OUR SEIZE, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT EASY A FEW THOUSAND STUDENTS ON CAMPUS ROTATING THROUGH THOSE LABS.
SO YOU SAID COSMETOLOGY WOULD BE IN THAT TIER ONE? THAT FIRST TIER?
>> PLEASE REPEAT WHAT YOU WERE ASKING.
>> IS COSMETOLOGY IN THAT FIRST TIER?
BUT WE'RE STILL COLLECTING THE DATA FROM ALL THE DIVISIONS RIGHT NOW AND WE
[01:35:03]
WILL CONTINUE THE DISCUSSION THROUGH NEXT WEEK TO DEFINING TIER ONES AND TIER TWOS.WE WILL MOVE TO ITEM NUMBER PERK CONSENTED CALENDAR, ITEMS 3.01 THROUGH ITEMS
[3. Consent Items]
3.31.DOES ANY MEMBER OF THE BOARD WISH TO PULL ONE OF THE ITEMS FROM THE CONSENT CALENDAR? OKAY.
SO, WE WILL GO AHEAD AND TAKE A MOTION FOR, TO APPROVE THE CONSENT
[4. Information Items]
CALENDAR.>> MOVED BY TRUSTEE LEWIS, SECONDED WHICH DR. LIU, WE WILL NOW TAKE A ROLL CALL VOTE ON THE ITEMS CONSENT CALENDAR.
WE WILL THEN MOVE ON TO ITEMS NUMBER 4.01 AND 4.02, WHICH ARE INFORMATION ITEMS. I WILL TAKE A JOINT MOTION TO RECEIVE AND FILE THOSE ITEMS.
>> WE HAVE A MOTION BY TRUSTEE BIRKEY, SECOND BY TRUSTEE LEWIS SO WE WILL ASK FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE FOR THOSE TWO ITEMS. I WILL GO AHEAD AND SEE, I THINK THIS IS OKAY, IF I CAN TAKE UNDER ADMINISTRATIVE
[5.01 Consideration of Adoption of Resolution No. 20-0506B Denouncing Xenophobia and Anti-Asian Sentiment Arising Due to Fears of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Affirming Commitment to the Well-Being and Safety of Asian American Communities]
[5.02 Consideration of Adoption of Resolution No. 20-0506C Recognizing Asian Pacific American Heritage Month for the Month of May]
[5.03 Consideration of Adoption of Resolution No. 20-0506D Affirming Unwavering Commitment to Student Success and Equity as we Respond to and Recover from the COVID-19 Pandemic]
ITEMS, ITEMS 5.01 TO 5.03, THOSE ARE ALL RESOLUTIONS.SEEING ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS ON ANY OF THE RESOLUTIONS? I THINK YOU HAVE A COPY OF THEM.
I WOULD TAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THOSE THREE ITEMS TOGETHER.
WE HAVE A MOTION BY TRUSTEE LEWIS.
WE WILL TAKE ROLL CALL VOTE OFTEN THOSE ITEMS TOGETHER.
HAS ANYTHING CHANGED IN THIS ITEM SINCE THE BOARD LAST DISCUSSED IT.
ALL DISCUSSIONS HAVE BEEN HAD WITH THE EXCEPTION OF UPDATING THE WEB PAGE WHEN WE'RE ALL SAID AND DONE.
[5.04 Consideration of Adoption of Revised Mission Statement]
>> OKAY, PERFECT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
SO WE WILL ASK FOR A MOTION FOR APPROVAL.
>> OKAY, SECOND BY TRUSTEE ESCOBAR.
YOU ASKED FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE FOR THIS ITEM.
>> ALL RIGHT, ITEM NUMBER 5.05 IS CONSIDERATION OF APPROVAL OF THE DISTRICT'S EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY FUND MULTIPLE METHOD ALLOCATION MODEL CERTIFICATION FORM FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 1920.
DR. FIERRO IS THERE ANY UPDATE ON THIS ITEM?
GIVE ME ONE SECOND, I HAVE VALENCIA ON THE LINE AND SHE WILL BE HELPING US WITH THE
[01:40:02]
ITEM.[5.05 Consideration of Approval of the District’s Equal Employment Opportunity Fund Multiple Method Allocation Model Certification Form, Fiscal Year 2019-2020]
SHE CAN'T.IT SAYS HER AUDIO IS CONNECTING.
OKAY, IT LOOKS LIKE WE HAVE VALENCIA WITH US NOW.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME.
>> SO WE ARE ON EAT 5.05 AND WE WONDER IF YOU COULD GIVE US A BRIEF EXPLANATION OF THE IDEA AND ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS WE HAVE ABOUT IT.
GOOD EVENING, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME.
YOU MAY BE AWARE THE MULTIPLE DOCUMENTS ARE HOW THEY HOLD THE CAMPUS ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE DIVERSITY FUNDING.
THE MODEL IS BROKEN UP INTO NINE METHODS AND THEY TRACK THE PREHIRING, SELECTION AND RETENTION PROCESSES.
WHAT THE DOCUMENT HAS IS A SUMMARY OF ALL OF OUR ACTIVITIES DO WE ON CAMPUS FOR DIVERSITY COMPLIANCE AND FOR EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION.
MANY OF THE IDEAS ARE THE SAME YEAR TO YEAR, SO OUR POLICY IS, DON'T CHANGE AND THINGS TO THAT EFFECT, BUT ONE OF THE THINGS I DID WANT TO DRAW YOUR ATTENTION TO IS THAT ANNUALLY, WE TYPICALLY MEET AT THE MAJORITY OF THE ITEMS BUT THIS YEAR I'M HAPPY TO REPORT THAT WE MEET NINE OUT OF THE NINE ITEMS. THE MAJOR CHANGE IS THAT ITEM THREE, HARD TO HIRE AREAS, WE DO MEET THAT.
WE DO HAVE THE ABILITY TO REIMBURSE FOR CERTAIN CANDIDATES, DEPENDING HOW FAR THEY MAKE IT THROUGHOUT HERE PROCESS OR MANAGERS POSITIONS.
THROUGH CONVERSATIONS WE'VE TALKED ABOUT WAYS WE CAN EXPAND THE REIMBURSEMENTS THROUGHOUT THE HERE PROCESS.
ANY OTHER ITEMS THAT HAVE BEEN ADDED INCLUDE OUR UP WITHTIME AND RECURRING PLACES ADVERTISEMENTS SO I'M HAPPY TO GO OVER SOME MORE CHANGES IF YOU WOULD LIKE, BUT THOSE ITEMS ARE THE MAIN CHANGES FROM THIS YEAR AS COMPARED TO LAST YEAR.
DO WE HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS FROM ANYBODY? I JUST WANTED TO SAY CONGRATULATIONS, IT IS VERY EXCITING WE'RE MEETING ALL NINE OF THE FACTORS, SO THAT'S REALLY GREAT.
I KNOW THAT WAS KIND OF THE GOAL THE CHANCELLOR WANTED ALL THE COLLEGES TO GET THROUGH SO I'M GLASS THAT CERRITOS COLLEGE IS LEADING IN THAT EFFORT SO THANK YOU FOR EVERYBODY'S WORK IN THOSE EFFORTS.
SO, DEPENDING ON THE OUTCOME OF THE VOTE, WE COULD FOLLOW UP WITH SIGNATURES, BUT THAT CONCLUDES MY REPORT.
OKAY, SO WE WILL TAKE A MOTION FOR APPROVAL OF THIS ITEM.
HE'LL ASK ANDREA FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE.
>> ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, EVERYBODY.
MOVING ON TO 5.06, CONSIDERATION OF APPROVAL REPLACE THE DEAN OF
[01:45:06]
ADMISSION RECORDS AND SERVICES POSITION WITH A NEW DEAN OF ENROLLMENT SERVICES.[5.06 Consideration of Approval to Replace the Dean, Admissions Records, and Services Position with a New Dean, Enrollment Services Job Classification and Description]
WE WILL ASK DR. FIERRO FOR A REPORT.>> YES, THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PEREZ.
THESE ARE SOME CHANGES WE MADE IN STUDENT SERVICES WHEN WE HIRED FOR I FORGOT THE TITLE, BEING OVER STUDENT SERVICES, SO WE MOVED SOME OF HIS FUNCTIONS TO BE PART OF A MORE BALANCED IN LINE WITH THE FUNCTIONS OF THE AREA.
SO THAT IS LIKE THE OVER ALL DESCRIPTION.
AS I ARRIVED IN THE LAST YEAR, WE HAD DISCUSSIONS OVER WHETHER STUDENT SERVICES ARE SET UP FOR SUCCESS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS.
AS DR. FIERRO MENTIONED, WHEN KIM RETIRED WE DID A RECONFIGURATION FOR THE SUCCESS, AND HE'S BEEN DOING AN AMAZING JOB.
BUT IN THAT PORTFOLIO AT THE TIME, WE HAD CERTAINLY, AND I WILL TRY TO REMEMBER EVERYONE, BUT E.O.P.S.
LINK CARE, CAL WORKS, INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS SERVICES AS WELL AS FINANCIAL AID.
AND WE KNEW THAT WAS AN INTERESTING PORTFOLIO, BUT WE ALSO HAD DISCUSSIONS ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF CREATING WHAT WE ARE ENTITLING DEAN OF ENROLLMENT SERVICES.
IT IS A MODEL THAT IS COMMON ACROSS CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES WHERE WE HAVE PLACED OUR SRT, GPT, SO OUR PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT TEAM WILL BE PART OF THIS YEAR, AS WELL AS OUR OUTREACH EFFORTS.
SCHOOL RELATIONS WILL BE PART.
ADMISSIONS AND RECORDS AND THEN FINANCIAL AID.
AS WE'VE GUNDY SIGNING THE NEW BUILDINGS OF THE FUTURE WE HAVE CONSIDERED THE POSSIBILITY OF A ONE STOP SO STUDENTS DON'T HAVE TO GO TO VARIOUS OFFICES BUT CAN GET WHAT THEY NEED AS THEY TRANSITION CERRITOS COLLEGE.
>> THE QUESTION I HAVE, IS THERE FISCAL IMPACT WITH THAT CHANGE?
>> NONE AT ALL AT THIS TIME, NO.
>> QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? ALL RIGHT.
I DON'T SEE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS, WE WILL GO AHEAD AND ASK FOR A MOTION OF APPROVAL FOR 5.06.
>> ANYONE ELSE WANTS TO DO IT?
WE WILL ASK FOR A ROLL CALL VOTE FOR THIS ITEM.
OKAY, SO DR. FIERRO, LET'S TAKE ITEMS NUMBER 5.07, 5.08 AND 5.09 ALL TOGETHER SINCE
[5.07 Consideration of Approval of Memorandum of Understanding Between Cerritos College and Jovenes, Inc. as part of the College Homelessness and Housing Insecure Pilot Program]
[5.08 Consideration of Approval of Memorandum of Understanding Between Cerritos College and Jovenes, Inc. as part of the Village Property]
[5.09 Consideration of Approval of Memorandum of Understanding Between Cerritos College and Jovenes, Inc.]
THEY ALL RELATE TO THE COLLEGE'S WORK AND PARTNERSHIP WITH JOVENES SO I WOULD ASK FOR A REPORT FOR ALL THOSE THREE ITEMS TOGETHER.SO, AS YOU KNOW, WE HAVE BEEN COLLABORATING WITH JOVENES IN MANY ASPECTS TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE OUR STUDENTS WITH HOUSING.
WE HAVE A COUPLE OF PARTNERSHIPS WITH JOVENES, THE FIRST ONE STARTED A COUPLE YEARS AGO WITH JOVENES IN WHICH WE BEGAN PLACING STUDENTS IN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY, WE PLACED ABOUT 80 TO 100 STUDENTS, I BELIEVE, IN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY.
THAT PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPED INTO THE VILLAGE, WHICH WE PURCHASED, WE WERE ABLE TO COLLABORATE, AGAIN WITH JOVENES TO RUN THE PROJECT WITH US AND FIND ADDITIONAL
[01:50:03]
RESOURCES SO WE COULD MAINTAIN THE OPERATION FOR THE LONGTERM.AND THE NEWEST PART OF OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH JOVENES IS TO A GRANT WE HAVE RECEIVED THROUGH THE CHANCELLOR'S OFFICE FOR $2.1 MILLION OVER A THREEYEAR PERIOD THAT IS GOING TO ALLOW US FOR SERVICES, SIGNIFICANTLY OUTSIDE OF THE OTHER PROGRAMS. SO THE PARTNERSHIP CONTINUES TO GROW.
I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME TO THE MEETING, JOVENES, A QUICK OVERVIEW OF THE WORK WE HAVE BEEN DOING TOGETHER AND SOME OF THE FUTURE PLANS FOR US.
THIS IS SOMETHING THAT IS GROWING RAPIDLY AND IT IS SERVING AS A MODEL IN OTHER LOCATIONS AS EVERYBODY STRUGGLES TO HELP STUDENTS WITH HOUSING AND OTHER BASIC NEEDS ISSUES.
SO WELCOME, ANDREA, GOOD HAVE YOU HERE.
>> GOOD EVENING, MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME THIS TIME.
CERRITOS IS ONE OF OUR PARTNERS IN THE COMMUNITY.
WE LOOK AT EDUCATION AS WELL ONE OF THE TRUE WAYS OUT OF HOMELESSNESS FOR A LOT OF THE YOUTH THAT WE SERVE.
WITHOUT INVESTING IN HIGHER EDUCATION, DUE TO THE COST OF LIVING IN OUR CITY, TO LOOK AT VULNERABLE POPULATIONS LIKE SINGLE PARENTS, FOSTER YOUTH, VETERANS, WE SEE THE NEED TO INTEGRATE THE HOUSING MODEL, HOUSING SOLUTION AT THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE LEVEL.
SO SOME OF THE WORK THAT WE'VE BEEN DOING LED TO SOME INTERESTING INITIATIVE WHERE, FOR EXAMPLE, THE COUNTY HAS APPROVED THE POSITION OF PURE NAVIGATORS ACROSS COMMUNITY COLLEGES TO INTEGRATE THE SYSTEM, TO SERVE HOMELESS IN THE COMMUNITY WITH THE SPECIFIC NEED OF HOMELESS STUDENTS.
WE'VE BEEN WORKING AT THE STATE LEVEL WITH AN ADVOCATE FOR YOUTH TO ALSO GET INVOLVED, LEGISLATION AROUND FUNDING, INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIPS.
AND JOVENES HAS BEEN AT THE FRONTED OF THE INNOVATIVE THINKING, SO THE RESOURCES TO BE ABLE TO HOUSE FOR US 24 STUDENTS AT ANY GIVEN TIME.
ON THAT, THERE BE SEVEN TOWN HOMES AND WE'RE ABOUT TO SECURE SOME FUNDING FOR THE COUNTY FOR A PERIOD OF THREE YEARS ANGLE WITH HAVE A MODEL OF BRIDGE HOUSING THAT WILL BE NO COST FOR STUDENTS, AND IT WILL BE THE FIRST PHASE AS WE PARTNER WITH COLLEGE, STAFF AND STUDENT SERVICES TO IDENTIFY WHAT THE MOST VULNERABLE STUDENTS.
AND THEN, THERE WILL BE HALF OF THE UNIT DEDICATED TO THOSE THAT ARE MAYBE A LITTLE BIT MORE STABLE AND THEY CAN COME FROM OUR PHASE ONE OF THE BRIDGE HOUSING AND CAN PAY A VERY AFFORDABLE OCCUPANCY FEE TO HELP US MAKE THE PROJECT SUSTAINABLE.
WHEN WE TALK ABOUT OCCUPANCY FEE, WE REALLY TALK ABOUT A SINGLE ROOM OCCUPANCY TO 200 TO $300 A MONTH, WHICH IS EVEN BELOW AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT AND SO ON.
WE WILL BE ABLE TO CONTINUE DEVELOPING OUR TRADITIONAL APPROACH, WHICH HAS ABOUT SUPPORTING STUDENTS THROUGH MASTER LIST PROPERTY THAT WE MANAGE UNDER JOVENES THAT ARE ALSO HOUSING ENVIRONMENT BUT THE MODEL WHICH THE RENTAL SUBSIDIES HELP PEOPLE HAVE THE LEASE IN THEIR NAME AND THE RENTAL SUBSIDY SUPPORTS THEM, AS THEY ENROLL IN THE PROGRAM, THEY CONTINUE TO BE IN SCHOOL AND ON A MONTHLY BASIS, WE CONTINUE TO REVIEW THE FINANCIAL POSITION AND THE SUBSIDY CAN CHANGE THROUGHOUT THE MONTHS THEY ARE IN THE PROGRAM.
AND THE RAPID REHOUSING IS FOR THE INDIVIDUAL TO AFFORD THE LEASE ON THEIR OWN.
THE DIFFERENT STRATEGY ALLOWS US TO TACKLE THE NEED FOR AN AGE APPROPRIATE SOLUTION BIRKEY A HOUSING MODEL THAT RESEMBLES THE TRADITIONAL COLLEGE DORMS FOR THE YOUNGER POPULATION, THE TRADITIONAL POPULATION JOVENES SERVES, 18 TO 25, TO THE NEED OF A SINGLE PARENTS, SINGLE MOTHER OR FATHER WHO HAVE CHILDREN WHICH THE HOUSING MODEL BECOMES MORE COMPLICATED.
[01:55:02]
WE'RE EXCITED, WE BELIEVE THAT CERRITOS COLLEGE IS OF THE IDEA THAT SOMETIMES JUST GIVING A TEMPORARY HANDOUT YOU CAN MAYBE TOUCH A LOT OF PEOPLE BUT YOU CANNOT REALLY CHANGE LEAVES.INSTEAD BEING ABLE TO FOCUS ON LONGTERM SUSTAINABLE HOUSING SECLUSIONS CAN REALLY ALLOW INDIVIDUALS TO MEET THEIR BASIC NEEDS AND WESTERLY' SEEING IN THE PAST THREE YEARS WORKING ON THE COLLEGE SUCCESS PROGRAM THAT ONCE INDIVIDUALS ARE ABLE TO BE HOUSED, THEY CAN PERFORM MUCH BETTER IN SCHOOL AND WITH TREMENDOUS CHANGES AND ACADEMIC RETENTION AND GRADUATION RATES.
THE PROJECT ARE NOT ONLY SERVE IT WILL SERVE, OF COURSE, STUDENTS FROM CERRITOS COLLEGE, BUT IT IS PART OF THE PROGRAM THIS INDIVIDUAL STAYING, YOU KNOW, STAYING STABLE AS THEY TRANSITION TO THE INSTITUTION, THAT IS OUR GOAL, TO BE ABLE TO MAXIMIZE THE TRANSFER RATE FROM CERRITOS COLLEGE TO OTHER INSTITUTIONS SO WE'RE VERY EXCITED TO START THIS PARTNERSHIP.
THE VILLAGE, WE ALREADY HIRE OUR STAFF SO WE'RE PLANNING IN THE NEXT COUPLE WEEKS TO START TO MOVE PEOPLE IN THE, YOU KNOW, IN THE COMPLEX.
WE ARE CONSIDERED EMERGENCY SERVICES, SO YOU KNOW, I WAS HEARING FROM THE PREVIOUS CONVERSATION THERE IS A LOT OF, YOU KNOW, FEAR AND QUESTIONS RELATED TO THE HANDLING OF COVID19 AND THE HEALTH CRISIS, SO WE'RE TAKING THE PRECAUTIONS, ALSO FOR THE VILLAGE WHERE, YOU KNOW, IN A PORTION OF THE VILLAGE WE'RE PLANNING TO PUT TWO INDIVIDUALS PER ROOM, WE'RE GOING TO START WITH ONE PERSON PER ROOM AND TRY TO MAXIMIZE AND BRING ALL THE BEST PRACTICES CAN PROVIDING PPES, SOCIAL DISTANCING AND HE WE SERVE ABOUT 350 CLIENTS AT THEY GIVEN TIME FROM SHELTER, TRANSITIONAL HOUSING, PERMANENT SUPPORTING HOUSING FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES SO WE HAVE A GOOD EXPERIENCE AND UNDERSTANDING HOW TO OPERATE THESE TYPES OF PROGRAMS. OUR PROGRAMS HAVE TO STAY OPEN BECAUSE WE'RE CONSIDERED EMERGENCY PROVIDERS, AND SO WE WILL PLAN TO INTEGRATE THE USE OF TOUCHLESS THERMOMETERS TO BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY RIGHT AWAY, RIGHT, THOSE SITUATIONS OF SYMPTOMS THAT MIGHT LEAD TO A DIFFERENT TYPE OF PLAN.
WE'RE CONNECTED TO THE CITY AND, YOU KNOW, THE COUNTY AS CERRITOS, SO WE HAVE A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH BOTH THE COUNTY AUTHORITIES AND THE LOS ANGELES HEALTH SERVICES TO LOCATE AN INDIVIDUAL THAT TESTS POSITIVE, WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MONITOR VERY CLOSELY BECAUSE OF THE FIELD THAT WE OPERATE IN AND BEING ABLE TO CONDUCT TESTING ON STAFF.
SO IT IS A DIFFICULT SITUATION, WE HOPE THINGS NORMALIZE BUT WE'VE BEEN OPERATING OUR PROGRAMS IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS IN THIS SITUATION SO WE'RE COMFORTABLE WE CAN DO THE SAME FOR THIS INITIATIVE.
ANYONE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR ANDREA.
>> DR. FIERRO, MAY I ADD SOMETHING QUICKLY.
>> I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO JOVENES, WE'VE BEEN PARTNERING WITH THEM FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS.
I'M EXCITED ABOUT THIS NEXT PHASE OF THE RELATIONSHIP.
EVERY FRIDAY WE MEET TO WORK OUT DETAILS OF WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO REVIEW TODAY.
WE, ANDREA SAYS WE ARE AHEAD OF THE GAME, WE ARE FAR AHEAD OF OUR COLLEAGUES IN THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM IN THIS WORK.
WE PRESENTED AT THE BASIC NEEDS CONFERENCE, AND PEOPLE CAME TO OUR PRESENTATION AND WERE JUST AMAZED HOW FAR WE'RE ALONG IN OUR PREP.
YOU KNOW WE'RE EXCITED BECAUSE NOT ONLY WITH THE VILLAGE ARE WE ABLE TO HELP THE 24 TO 28 STUDENTS, WE NOW, WITH THE SECOND PHASE AND THE MONEY FROM THE CHANCELLORS OFFICE, ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO HELP STUDENTS WHO MAY HAVE
[02:00:21]
DEPENDENCE.IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT THE STUDENTS BUT OTHERS AND SUPPORT THEM, AND ABLE TO HELP STUDENTS OVER 25, WHICH IS SOMETHING THAT WE WERE NOT ABLE TO DO BEFORE, AND I KNOW THERE IS A GREAT NEED THAT WE HEARD FROM THE REAL SURVEY OUR STUDENTS WHO WERE OVER 25 NEEDED SUPPORT.
SO ALL TOGETHER, WE WILL BE ABLE TO HOPEFULLY HELP ABOUT 100 STUDENTS OVER THE COURSE OF TIME, SO WE'RE REALLY, REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT, WE KNOW WE'RE JUST TOUCHING THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG BUT WE LOOK FORWARD TO CONTINUING THIS RELATIONSHIP SO THANK YOU FOR THAT.
AND JOVENES AND I ARE PRESENTING TO ALL OF THE RECIPIENTS OF THE HOUSING MONEY FROM THE CHANCELLOR'S OFFICE ON FRIDAY BECAUSE THEY WANT TO REPLICATE THE WORK THAT WE ARE DOING AS THEY ESTABLISH NEW PARTNERSHIPS.
>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH, TO BOTH OF YOU FOR ALL YOUR WORK.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? NO.
I WOULD LIKE TO DEFINITELY THANK JOVENES FOR YOUR WORK AND DILCIE FOR LEADING THIS INITIATIVE THERE WAS LOT THAT WAS PUT TOGETHER QUICKLY, SHE ONLY LOOKED CONFUSED FOR ABOUT A MINUTE AND THEN GOT IT TOGETHER AND STARTED WORKING TO MAKE THIS WORK.
THIS IS ONE OF THE THINGS I THINK ALL OF US SHOULD BE EXTREMELY PROUD OF THE WORK THAT WE HAVE DONE.
WE WENT FROM VERY LITTLE TO OPENING THE GATES TO MANY OF OUR STUDENTS TO HOUSING.
AND AS ANDREA MENTIONED, IT IS NOT BY GIVING THEM ONE TIME HELP FOR GIVE THEM RESOURCES TO LEARN AND STAND ON THEIR OWN FEET OVER A PERIOD OF TIME, AND I THINK THAT IS PERHAPS THE BEST BENEFIT OF ALL THIS PROGRAM.
I'M NOT ONE TO DO RELIGIOUS QUOTES IN PUBLIC, BUT I THINK THIS IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF GIVING SOMEONE A FISH BUT TEACHING THEM HOW TO FISH AND IT WILL GO A LONG WAY FOR OUR STUDENTS FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.
SO THANK YOU, EVERYONE, FOR THIS.
THANK YOU TO THE BOARD PARTICULARLY FOR THE SUPPORT AS WE BEGAN HAVING THOSE CONVERSATIONS, SO YOUR SUPPORT THROUGHOUT THIS WHOLE PROCESS HAS BEEN FANTASTIC.
I REMEMBER ONE OF THE EARLY CONVERSATIONS I HAD WITH TRUSTEE BIRKEY, HE REMEMBER I THINK YOU WERE HAVING LUNCH SOMEWHERE, AND THEN THE CONVERSATIONS CONTINUED TO GROW WITH ALL OF YOU, SO THIS IS SOMETHING I PERSONALLY FEEL VERY PROUD OF AND I HOPE ALL OF YOU FEEL THE SAME WAY.
>> IF HE COULD JUST CHIME IN FOR ONE SECOND, I'M VERY PROUD OF ALL THE PEOPLE WHO SPENT SO MANY HOURS ON THIS.
ANDREA, YOURSELF AND SO MANY PEOPLE FROM OUR STAFF.
AND IT'S WEIRD TO BE RECOGNIZED BY COMMUNITY COLLEGES AT LARGE FOR IT BECAUSE THAT'S CERTAINLY NOT THE GOAL OF WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO HERE, BUT THE FLIP SIDE IS, IN REFLECTION, IF THERE IS A WAY THIS CAN IMPACT PEOPLE WELL BEYOND OUR COLLEGE DISTRICT, THEN I'M EXTRAORDINARILY EXCITED ABOUT IT.
AND I FEEL LIKE THERE IS A LOT OF INVENTIVENESS THAT HAS GONE INTO THIS FROM ALL SIDES.
IT IS KIND OF A UNITED CLARITY OF HUMBLE PEOPLE WANTING TO DO THE RIGHT THING FOR FOLKS THAT MADE THIS POSSIBLE, SO I JUST REALLY COMMEND EVERYONE INVOLVED, AND I'M JUST REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THIS INVESTMENT BY OUR COLLEGE, BECAUSE IT REALLY REFLECTS WHAT WE'RE ABOUT AND WHAT WE WANT TO ACCOMPLISH AND WHERE OUR PRICERS ARE.
>> ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS? ANYBODY ELSE? SO, THANK YOU, AGAIN.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE PRESENTATION.
WE REALLY ENJOYED HEARING ABOUT IT, VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS NEXT STEP.
I HAD HEARD FROM ONE OF MY DEAR FRIENDS ABOUT THE PRESENTATION BY JOVENES AND THE COLLEGE.
I WAS LIKE, WHAT? I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT, THIS BUT APPARENTLY IT WAS WIDELY SPREAD IN THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM THIS IS A MODEL PROGRAM, SO AGAIN, THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO WORKED ON THIS AND YOUR LEADERSHIP AND DEDICATION.
I THINK PEOPLE ACROSS THE STATE ARE GOING TO BE VERY EXCITED AND INTERESTED TO LEARN FROM WHAT WE'RE DOING HERE AT CERRITOS COLLEGE, SO THANK YOU AGAIN.
[02:05:01]
HAVE A GOOD EVENING.>> OKAY, SO THEN WE WILL TAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE THREE ITEMS TOGETHER, WE ARE 5.07, 5.08 AND 5.09.
IS THERE A MOTION? TRUSTEE BIRKEY.
ALL RIGHT, WE WILL TAKE ROLL CALL VOTE.
OKAY, SO WE WILL NOW MOVE TO THE LAST ITEM BEFORE WE GO TO CLOSED SESSION, WHICH IS
[6. Reports and Comments from District Officials]
EAT 6.01, WHICH ARE REPORTS AND COMMENTS FROM THE DISTRICT OFFICIALS.AND I WANTED JUST TO START REALLY QUICK, EVER BEFORE WE GO AROUND THE BOARD, IF MISS KATHY HOGUE, SHE HAD LOST SOME CONNECTION SO I WANTED TO SEE IF KATHY WANTED TO GIVE ANY COMMENTS OR FEEDBACK ABOUT THE DISCUSSION WE HAD EARLIER ABOUT MOVING THE PLANS FOR FALL.
I'M STILL HAVING CONNECTION PROBLEM VOICE HOPE YOU CAN HEAR ME OKAY.
FUNNY YOU'RE ASKING THIS QUESTION BECAUSE WE DID TALK ABOUT THAT TONIGHT IN OUR SPECIAL CHAPTER MEETING ABOUT WHAT WILL OUR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES BE TRANSITIONING BACK INTO CAMPUS.
BECAUSE WE ALL NEED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR HOW WE COME BACK TO CAMPUS FOR THE SAFETY MUCH NOT JUST THE STAFF AND FACULTY AND EVERYBODY ELSE BUT ESPECIALLY FOR OUR STUDENTS.
I DON'T KNOW IF MOST OF THE BOARD MEMBERS KNOW, BY WORK WITH CTE DIRECTLY SO THAT HAS BEEN A BIG CONCERN.
WE DID RECENTLY PLACE ANOTHER ORDER TO GET MORE SIMULATORS, SO THAT WILL HOPEFULLY HELP WITH SOME OF THE CLINICALS.
WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO MIGRATING BACK AND UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF DOING SO IS THE SAFETY OF EVERYTHING.
I MISSED QUITE A BIT SO IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS FOR ME, I CAN TRY TO ANSWER.
>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH, KATHY.
OKAY, SO SEEING NONE, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
THEN WE WILL HAVE COMMENTS FROM THE TRUSTEES.
SO TRUSTEE LEWIS, ANY COMMENTS?
>> THE ONLY COMMENT IS OF A PERSONAL NOTE, AS OF APRIL 1, I AM THE 330,623 ADMITTED TO THE STATE BAR OF CALIFORNIA.
CONGRATULATIONS, TRUSTEE LEWIS.
>> HI SO I'M GOING TO FLIP THE ACTUAL REPORTS.
I DID MY REPORT ON THE ASCC PRESIDENT ONE, BUT THE REPORT FROM ASCC WAS THAT OUR BUDGETING WAS PASSED TODAY AT THE STUDENT SENATE BUT IT COULD BE REVISED IN THE FALL DUE TO THE COVID19 AND THE REVENUE CHANGE WITH THAT, AS WELL.
AND, IT SHOULD BE APPROVED BY CABINET ON MONDAY, SO HOPEFULLY TO THAT WILL BE DONE.
AND I JUST WANT TO THANK EVERYONE ELSE AGAIN FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY OF BEING ABLE TO REPRESENT THE STUDENTS AND STUDENTS BELIEVING IN ME TO REPRESENT THEM.
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE ESCOBAR.
>> YEAH, I MEAN, I ALREADY SAID MY PIECE ON THE PROPERTY NORTH OF CAMPUS, I'M VERY, VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT AND I JUST CAN'T ITERATE ENOUGH HOW IMPORTANT THAT IS AND EXCITED I AM ABOUT IT.
AND ASIDE FROM THAT, I HAD NOTHING TO REPORT OTHER THAN I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS END OF YEAR SEASON FOR ALL THE FOLKS WHO ARE GOING TO BE GRADUATING FROM OUR COLLEGE.
AND ALL THE FOLKS COMING IN, DEALING WITH A LOT OF HIGHER EDUCATION QUESTIONS.
AND, ACROSSTHEBOARD, RELATIVE TO A LOT OF OPTIONS THAT ARE NARROWING IN THE CURRENT SITUATION.
SO AWARE OF THAT, I ALSO WANTED TO SHARE A PERSONAL NOTE THAT I'M GOING TO BE WELCOMING A SON INTO OUR FAMILY IN AUGUST.
[02:10:03]
SO WE'RE VERY HAPPY ABOUT THAT.CONGRATULATIONS, TRUSTEE BIRKEY.
SO WE WILL MOVE ON TO TRUSTEE CAMACHORODRIGUEZ.
>> I JUST WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU FOR ACKNOWLEDGING THE FEELING OF SADNESS AND CONGRATULATIONS TO ZURICH, TO VALERY AND EVERYONE WHO IS JUST EXPERIENCING, YOU KNOW, CHANGES, POSITIVE, NEGATIVE.
I WILL BE EXPERIENCING MY FIRST DRIVETHROUGH GRADUATION WITH MY YOUNGEST, WHO IS GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL, AND JUST ALL THE CHANGES THAT ARE COMING.
YOU KNOW, THE FIRST KINDERGARTEN CLASS THAT IS GOING TO BE PROBABLY ONLINE, ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING TO EXPERIENCE A FIRST IN OUR LIFETIME THAT NONE OF US HAVE EVER THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE HAPPENING.
AND, SO, MARISA I APPRECIATE YOU TALKING ABOUT GRIEF AND ALL OF US WILL HAVE THOSE STAGES.
I KNOW FOR MYSELF, I HAVE MY MOMENTS IN MY CORNER FACING THE WINDOW WHERE I'M HAPPY TO HEAR ALL THESE BIRDS CHIRPING AND I'M STATIONARY AND CALM AND THEN I REMEMBER THAT OUTSIDE OF THAT, THERE IS A LOT OF THINGS GOING ON AND PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT EXPERIENCING THOSE MOMENTS.
AND, JUST THAT WE REMEMBER THAT WE'RE A GOOD GROUP OF PEOPLE AND THAT WE'RE WORKING HARD FOR EVERYONE THAT WE CAN TOUCH.
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE CAMACHORODRIGUEZ.
>> CONGRATULATIONS FOR ZURICH AND JAMES AND VALERY, AND JUST HOPE EVERYONE STAYS HEALTHY AND SAFE.
>> YES, JUST I DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO CONGRATULATE VALERY ESCOBAR ON THE PRODUCTIVE YEAR.
VERY PROUD OF HER, SHE WORKED VERY HARD AND GOT A LOT OF THINGS ACCOMPLISHED AND TOOK THE ROLE VERY SERIOUSLY SO JUST WANTED TO CONGRATULATE HER ON HER YEAR AS A TRUSTEE.
DR. FIERRO, DO YOU OR THE VPS HAVE ANY UPDATE, ANYTHING ELSE?
>> I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE VPS GIVE A BRIEF UPDATE ON THEIR AREA AND THE WORK THAT IS BEING DONE.
IT'S A LOT OF WORK SO I WOULD LIKE FOR THEM TO GET THEIR OWN RECOGNITION AND BE ABLE TO PASS THAT RECOGNITION TO THEIR TEAMS.
>> SO I WILL BEGIN WITH ADRIANA.
THERE ARE ONLY TWO THINGS THAT I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE.
ONE OF THEM GOES ALONG WITH WHAT HE WAS SAYING IN GOING ON AN ONLINE TYPE OF THING, THINGS WE PERHAPS NEVER THOUGHT THAT WE WOULD, AND ONE IS THE SELECTION COMMITTEES, THOSE AFFECTED BY THE COVID19.
THEY WORK WITH HUMAN RESOURCES AND NOW WE HAVE COMPLETED A SELECTION PROCESS COMPLETELY ONLINE.
WE HAVE DONE THE FIRST AND THE FINAL INTERVIEWS ONLINE, AND YOU KNOW, IT IS JUST OPEN CREDITABLE THAT ONCE YOU HAVE THE NEED, EVERYBODY CAN MOVE TO THAT.
AND IT HAS BEEN GREAT TO SEE THE COLLABORATION WITH ALL THE CONSTITUENT GROUPS THAT ARE PART OF THE SELECTION COMMITTEES, AND YOU KNOW, WE WANT TO THANK THEM FOR THEIR WILLINGNESS AND OPENS TO ACCEPT THIS NEW ON LEAN PROCESS.
THE ONLY THING, THE SECOND THING THAT I WANTED TO MENTION IS THAT TODAY, OF COURSE, YOU WERE PRESENTED WITH THE MULTIPLE METHODS MODEL CERTIFICATE EDUCATION, BUT THE NEXT BOARD MEETING, WE WILL BE BRINGING TO YOU THE EQUAL EMPLOYMENT PLAN.
THERE IS A THREEYEAR CYCLE REVIEW AND THIS YEAR THE PLAN IS BEING UPDATED.
WE WILL BRING THE PLAN ON JUNE 3.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO PRESENTING THE PLAN.
>> GOOD EVENING, BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
[02:15:01]
JUST A FEW ITEMS. YOU KNOW, WE CONTINUE TO WORK ON CAMPUS AND ALTERNATING SCHEDULES ON CAMPUS TO ENSURE EVERYBODY'S SAFETY.WE ALSO HAVE BEGUN LOOKING INTO CLEANING SUPPLIES AS WE PROGRESS DURING THE YEAR IN ANTICIPATION OF HAVING MORE FOLKS ON CAMPUS IF WE START OPENING UP CERTAIN LABS AND STUFF.
SO AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, SOME OF THESE ITEMS ARE DIFFICULT TO GET, BUT WE ARE ABLE TO GET OUR HANDS ON A NUMBER OF ITEMS. DR. FIERRO MENTIONED ONE OF THE ITEMS WAS OUR ELECTRO STATIC AND SANITIZER.
WE HAVE TWO OF THEM, THEY'RE MACHINE DRIVEN AND ALLOW US TO SANITIZE AND DISINFECT LARGE AREAS VERY QUICKLY.
THOSE HAVE BEEN IN OPERATION FOR A WHILE NOW, AND THEY ARE A GOOD ADDITION TO OUR FACILITIES FOLKS AS WE MAINTAIN A SANITIZED ENVIRONMENT ACROSS CAMPUS.
AS YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW, WITH THE CARES ACT, YOU HEARD EARLIER TODAY THAT WE ALREADY ISSUED OUT SOME FUNDS FOR THE STUDENT PORTION BUT WE'RE ALSO WORKING ON PLANS FOR THE INSTITUTIONAL PORTION SO WE'RE LOOKING TO PUSH THIS PLAN FORWARD BEFORE WE WANT TO GET THIS FINALIZED AND ESTABLISHED BEFORE WE BEGIN DRAWING DOWN FUNDS ON THE INSTITUTIONAL PORTION.
IN ADDITION, ONE OF THE MAJOR ITEMS WE'RE CURRENTLY WORKING ON, WE'RE IN BUDGET SEASON NOW AND PREPARING FOR THE NEW 2021 BUDGET DURING THIS PANDEMIC.
AND, SO, WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING AT PROJECTIONS, GETTING INFORMATION FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE AND ARE HOPEFUL THAT WE WILL BE ABLE TO BRING A BUDGET, TENTATIVE BUNK, FOR APPROVAL BY THE END OF JUNE, BUT MORE TO COME ON THE BUDGET AS WE PROGRESS.
WE ARE A LITTLE LEGAL RIGHT NOW, THE VPS WILL BE PRESENTING THEIR AREA PLANS TO PLANNING AND BUDGET TOMORROW, WHICH IS THE START OF THE PROCESS OF US FINALIZING OUR BUDGET.
WE ARE REALLY MOVING A LOT OF THINGS TO TRY AND GET SUPPORT TO OUR STUDENTS.
AS FELIPE AND DR. FIERRO MENTIONED, THIS WEEK WE DISTRIBUTED AND AWARDED ABOUT $2.7 MILLION TO OUR STUDENTS IN AID, SO WE ARE EXCITED AND I WANT TO RECOGNIZE THE FINANCIAL AID TEAM FOR THEIR WORKS THE FISCAL TEAM FOR THEIR WORK, BUS THAT TOOK LOT OF PLANNING AND WORK TO TREE AND BE EQUITABLE AND SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS.
SO WE WILL CONTINUE TO AWARD THAT MONEY OVER THE REST OF THE SEMESTER.
WE HAVE GIVEN OUT APPROXIMATELY 250 COMPUTERS AND LAPTOPS SO WE'RE PROUD OF THAT, WORKING TO GET THAT IN THE HANDS OF STUDENTS AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO ASSESS NEED AS WE LOOK TO THE SUMMER MONTHS AND INTO THE FALL.
OUR EMERGENCY AID PROCESS IS WORKING REALLY WELL.
WE HAVE OVER 1,000 EMERGENCY AID REQUESTS.
YOU KNOW THE NEEDS, RELATED TO RENT, UTILITIES, TRANSPORTATION, FOOD, SO I REALLY NEED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE STUDENT AFFAIRS TEAM AND ALL OF THE WORK BECAUSE THEY REVIEW EACH AND EVER ONE OF THOSE REQUESTS, AND REALLY, AND THE FINANCIAL AID TEAM, AS WELL.
THEY LOOK AT EACH REQUEST TO SEE IF A STUDENT IS ELIGIBLE FOR ANY MORE MONEY, OTHER THAN JUST THE EMERGENCY AID BECAUSE WE WANT TO MAXIMIZE THE AMOUNT THAT STUDENTS ARE GETTING.
WE MAXIMIZE THAT AS QUICKLY AS WE CAN.
THE FOOD DISTRIBUTIONS WE SERVED OVER 1400 CARS LAST WEEK SO THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED.
[02:20:01]
WEST I BELIEVE ALMOST OFFICE VOLUNTEERS.DR. FIERRO WAS ON THE FRONT LINE, DIRECTING TRAFFIC AND LOADING CARS, SO THANK YOU, BOSS, FOR DOING THAT.
IT IS GREAT TO SEE YOU IN THE TRENCHES WITH US, SO THANK YOU FOR THAT.
WE WILL HAVE ANOTHER ONE MAY 12, SO STILL OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY.
WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO GET FOOD TO AS MANY STUDENTS AS WE CAN.
SO THANK YOU TO EACH OF YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
THE CERRITOS CARES WEBSITE IS SOMETHING WE STARTED AND STUDENTS ARE REALLY UTILIZING IT.
WE ARE CONNECTING THEM TO RESOURCES ON CAMPUS.
IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE TO SEND A INSTITUTE, SEND THEM TO CERRITOS CARES AND WE WILL MAKE SURE THEY GET THE HELP THEY NEED.
JUST A FEW QUICK THINGS I WOULD LIKE TO ALSO BRING UP I WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER.
OUR FUTURE STUDENTS ARE THERE THEY'VE FOUND WAYS TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE LEARNING PACKETS AND ZOOMING WITH OUR STUDENT THROUGH A VIRTUAL PRESCHOOL, SO THEY'VE FOUND WAYS TO DO THAT AND WE ARE RECEIVING PICTURES FROM THE FAMILIES OF THE STUDENTS WORKING ON THE PACKETS, SO I WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEM.
I KNOW YOU ARE ALWAYS ASKING QUESTIONS, ESPECIALLY YOU, TRUSTEE PEREZ ABOUT DUAL ENROLLMENT.
CARLA AND EEP HAS CONTINUED TO WORK WITH OUR HIGH SCHOOL PARTNERS TO SET THE SUMMER SCHEDULE FOR DUAL ENROLLMENT.
GEL FORWARD THIS SUMMER WITH DUAL ENROLLMENT, AS WELL.
AND DUAL ENROLLMENT HAS ADDED ALMOST DOUBLE IN THE SECTIONS IN A COMPARATIVE YEAR AS COMPARED TO LAST YEAR.
ALSO WITH EPP, I WOULD LIKE TO CONGRATULATE, THANK EEP, FOR BRINGING NEARLY, IDENTIFYING NEARLY 3,000 ELIGIBLE STUDENTS THAT COULD BE PART OF CERRITOS COMPLETE AS A COHORT NEXT YEAR.
THEY HAVE TO FINISH THE PROCESS, OF COURSE, BUT IT IS JUST SHY OF 3,000 STUDENTS.
I HAVE TO RECOGNIZE STUDENT SERVICES COUNSELING, ASSESSMENT REPLACEMENT CENTER, OUTREACH FOR THEIR PHENOMENAL JOB, ALSO IF I MISSED ANYBODY, COMING TOGETHER AND MAKING THIS A HOLISTIC EFFORT TO SERVE OUR COMMUNITY AND STUDENTS SO THIS IS REALLY A CAMPUS WIDE EFFORT.
ALSO, I WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE FIRST VIRTUAL PRODUCTION OF AN ONLINE NEWSPAPER, SO THEY MET THROUGH ZOOM, THEY CONDUCTED EVERYTHING THEY COULD THROUGH ZOOM AND SENDING MATERIALS BACK AND FORTH, SO THAT IS AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME A COUPLE MORE THINGS AND I WILL WRAP IT UP.
WE HAVE HIGHLY COMPETENT NURSES FROM OUR PROGRAM, FOUR OF WHICH HAVE JUST RETURNED FROM NEW YORK CITY WHO WERE ON THE FRONT LINE, SO I WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE NOT ONLY THOSE INDIVIDUALS BUT OUR FACULTY AND ALL SUPPORT HERE FOR MAKING AND PROVIDING SUPPORT STRUCTURES IN NEED TO HAVE THESE SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS, SO THANK YOU FOR THE FACULTY, THE DEANS, STUDENTS AND EVERYBODY ELSE WHO PARTICIPATES IN THEIR SUCCESS.
YOU KNOW, THEIR SUCCESSES, YES, IT IS FACULTY, SUCCESS IS ALSO THROUGH MANAGEMENT, SUCCESS, ALSO, THOUGH, IS THROUGH THE CLASSIFIED WHO HELP RUN THE CENTERS, THE SKILL CENTERS, AND THE SUCCESS AND CONTINUED TEAM WORK WITH THE ADVISEMENT THEY GET FROM POINT COUNSELORS FROM COUNSELING IN THOSE AREAS, AS WELL.
AND THE LAST THING I WOULD LIKE TO MENTION IS WE JUST RECEIVED OFFICIAL NOTIFY EDUCATION TODAY, SORRY DR. FIERRO, IF YOU WERE GOING TO MENTION THIS, I'M GOING TO STEAL YOUR THUNDER FOR A MINUTE, THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION RECEIVED AN AWARD TODAY.
THE TITLE BUILDING PATHWAYS FOR HISPANIC COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS TO BECOME STEM TEACHERS THROUGH MENTORING AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING.
THIS IS FROM PROBABLY A TWOYEAR COMMITMENT THROUGH WORKING WITH THE NATIONAL SCIENCE CENTER IN A PROGRAM CALLED KICK STARTER WHERE WE HAVE ATTENDED AND TRAINED FACULTY AND OUR DIFFERENT INDIVIDUAL HE ACROSS CAMPUS, OUR GRANT WRITING DEPARTMENT, ON HOW TO APPLY FOR NSF GRANTS, WHICH ARE HIGHLY COMPETITIVE.
THE FOURYEAR COLLEGES THEMSELVES HAVE LESS THAN A 4% RETURN RATE AND COMMUNITY COLLEGES THEMSELVES ARE FRACTION OF 1%, SO YOU KNOW, I REALLY THINK THIS IS
[02:25:03]
SOMETHING TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND BE AWARE OF IT.IT'S A THREEYEAR AWARD FOR NEARLY $300,000 SO WE CONTINUE TO PARTNER WITH CAL STATE LONG BEACH, THE SCIENCE CENTER, OUR FACULTY AND OUR MANAGEMENT SO THANK YOU.
I JUST WANT TO ECHO SOME OF THE COMMENTS, TRUSTEE CAMACHORODRIGUEZ MENTIONED

[02:31:24]
BEFORE, WE HAVE BEEN IN THIS SITUATION I THINK WE STARTED THE TRANSITION ON MARCH 13, THE THURSDAY BEFORE WE WENT TO SPRING BREAK.I REMEMBER THOSE DAYS LEADING INTO THAT, THEY WERE VERY STRESSFUL DAYS.
NOT A LOT OF SLEEP AND DIFFICULTIES TRYING TO MAKE THOSE DECISIONS, AND APPRECIATE EVERYONE THAT OBVIOUSLY WORKED HARD TO TRANSITION US.
NOT ONLY FOR THE WORK THAT WAS DONE BUT FOR THE DIFFICULTY OF MAKING THOSE DECISIONS AT THAT TIME IT SEEMS, YOU KNOW, IN RETROSPECT IT SEEMS EASY TO SAY WE'RE NOT COMING BACK NEXT WEEK, BUT HAVING THE CAMPUS SAY WE'RE NOT COMING BACK AND DRIVE BY AND SEE AN EMPTY CAMPUS, WE GO TO CAMPUS EVERY WEEK, WE STOP BY AND CHECK THINGS OUT AND WALKING THROUGH CAMPUS COMPLETELY EMPTY, IT IS NOT A GOOD FEELING.
I GO AND WALK AROUND CAMPUS, BUT IT IS NOT NECESSARILY LIKE THE PLEASURE THAT IT USED TO GIVE ME, WALKING AROUND CAMPUS.
I KNOW IT IS FOR A GOOD CAUSE, BUT IT IS DIFFICULT FOR EVERYONE, SO I APPRECIATE MARISA BRINGING SOME OF THE FEELINGS THAT I THINK MANY OF US, MANY OF OUR STUDENTS AND MANY OF OUR TEAM MEMBERS STRUGGLE WITH.
THE WORK IS NOT ONLY JUST GETTING THROUGH THE MEETINGS AND DOING THE DAYTODAY, WHICH I THINK ALL OF US ARE DOING THAT TO THE BEST OF OUR ABILITY, BUT WHAT I THINK IT'S PHYSICAL YES AND EMOTIONALLY HARD FOR ALL OF US TO DO IS DO THE WORK IN ISOLATION AND THE RAPID CHANGE OF CONDITIONS, SO THANK YOU FOR ACKNOWLEDGING THAT AND OUR MANY, MANY, MANY OF US HAVE GONE THROUGH THAT AND WILL CONTINUE TO GO THROUGH THAT FOR A LITTLE BIT.
AMIDST ALL THIS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO SEE THE OPPORTUNITIES BEHIND ALL OF THIS AND OPPORTUNITIES WE CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AS WE TRANSITION TO WHATEVER OR NEW SITUATION IS I LIKE TO START THINKING ABOUT A BETTER NORMAL.
A BETTER CERRITOS COLLEGE AS WE EMERGE OUT OF ALL THIS NOT OUR OLD NORMAL, A BETTER NORMAL.
AND AS WE TRANSITION THROUGH OUR GRIEVANCE PROCESS AND TRYING TO GATHER OURSELVES, I THINK WE SHOULD TAKE A MOMENT TO BE APPRECIATIVE OF WHAT WE HAVE, APPRECIATIVE OF OUR STUDENTS, APPRECIATIVE OF EACH OTHER AND THEN LOOK AT HOW CAN WE MAKE OUR COMMUNITY OR COLLEGE EVEN BETTER THAN WHAT IT ALREADY IS.
IT IS CLEAR THAT WE HAVE THE HUMAN CAPITAL TO DO IT, THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST MOMENTS AT CERRITOS COLLEGE, SO FOR US NOT TO TRY, IT IS NOT AND EXCUSE, WE ARE ALREADY TRYING AND I THINK WITH THE AMOUNT OF CAPITAL WE HAVE, WE WILL BE EVEN BETTER OUT OF THIS.
SO THANK YOU FOR ACKNOWLEDGING THAT AND FOR BRINGING IT TO THE FOREFRONT.
I DON'T THINK WE EVER REALLY TALK MUCH ABOUT IT BUT I'M ALMOST POSITIVE IT IS IN EVERYONE'S MIND AS WE GO THROUGH OUR DAY TODAY.
I THANK EVERYBODY FOR SHARING AND CONGRATULATIONS TO LOTS OF GREAT EFFORTS GOING ON RIGHT NOW AT THE CAMPUS BY SO MANY, SO THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING.
LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING LOTS OF EXCITING THINGS COMING UP IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS SO WE WILL GO AHEAD NOW AND TAKE A 15MINUTE BREAK AND THEN WE WILL GO AHEAD AND RECESS TO CLOSED SESSION.
AND TO WE HAVE ANY READOUTS AFTER CLOSED SESSION TODAY?
WELL THEN WE WILL GO AHEAD AND RECESS RIGHT NOW.
IT IS 9:34 AND WE WILL RECESS FOR 15 MINUTES AND WE WILL CIRCLE BACK AGAIN FOR CLOSED SESSION.
AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE.
