GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE. ON BEHALF OF CERRITOS COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, IT IS MY HONOR TO RECOGNIZE DOCTOR JOSEPH PIERRO FOR HIS CONTINUED SERVICE AS OUR PRESIDENT AND SUPERINTENDENT. A DECADE IN THIS ROLE IS NOT A SMALL FEAT.

IT REFLECTS ENDURING LEADERSHIP, COLLABORATION, AND AN UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO STUDENTS, EMPLOYEES, AND THE COMMUNITY WE SERVE, THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE.

IT'S JUST HE'S JUST AN AMAZING INDIVIDUAL. AND I'M GRATEFUL THAT HE'S WORKING FOR OUR COLLEGE AND MAKING IT THE BEST COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN THE STATE.

SO IT'S VERY MERITED THOUGH I THINK I'VE BEEN REREADING A BOOK, ANGELA DUCKWORTH'S GRIT.

RIGHT. AND WHAT SHE REALLY CALLS OUT IS THAT STUDIES SHOW THAT THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE WHO ACCOMPLISH THE MOST AMAZING THINGS BEHIND THAT IS TWO THINGS IN COMBINATION. ONE IS PASSION AND THE OTHER IS PERSEVERANCE.

AND I THINK THESE LAST TEN YEARS HAVE DEMONSTRATED YOUR EXTRAORDINARY LEVEL OF BOTH OF THOSE THINGS.

THERE'S BEEN A LOT THAT WE'VE BEEN THROUGH. WE LIKE HIGHLIGHTING THE REALLY COOL STUFF THAT WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH.

BUT YOU'VE BEEN THROUGH A LOT OF THINGS THAT WEREN'T AS MUCH FUN, BUT THAT PASSION AND PERSEVERANCE HAS ENABLED YOU TO ACCOMPLISH A LOT.

WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE THE INCREDIBLE PORTFOLIO OF OF ACHIEVEMENTS, I THINK THAT PASSION REALLY DRIVES TO YOUR COMMITMENT TO THIS COMMUNITY, YOUR COMMITMENT TO UNDERSTAND THAT INTELLECTUAL INVESTMENT IN THESE STUDENTS IS TRANSFORMATIVE.

IN AN AREA WHERE THERE'S A LOT OF, YOU KNOW, ECONOMIC COMPLEXITY PEOPLE HAVE IN MASS HAVE A WHOLE LEVEL OF OPPORTUNITY. ALMOST 10,000 STUDENTS A YEAR WERE COMING UP ON BEING ABLE TO IMPACT.

AND SO THERE'S VERY FEW PEOPLE IN THIS COMMUNITY WHO HAVE WHO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MOVE THE NEEDLE AS MUCH AS YOU HAVE.

AND ON BEHALF OF THIS COMMUNITY, THANK YOU. I HAD ONLY BEEN A BOARD MEMBER FOR ABOUT SIX MONTHS BEFORE OUR BEFORE WE GOT A NEW ONE.

AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I COME IN AND THEY'RE LIKE, YEAH, WE NEED TO PICK A NEW SUPERINTENDENT. I'M LIKE OKAY, SOUNDS GOOD. SO WHEN IT CAME DOWN TO THE TWO FINALISTS THAT WE HAD, I KNOW THAT WE MADE THE RIGHT DECISION.

AND EVERY SINGLE YEAR I KNOW THAT WE'VE MADE THE RIGHT DECISION.

AND WE TRUSTED A GUY COMING FROM WYOMING WHO HAD A VERY THICK COLOMBIAN ACCENT AND SAID, YOU KNOW WHAT? WE NEED SOMETHING DIFFERENT BECAUSE MORE OF THE SAME JUST ISN'T GOING TO BE ENOUGH FOR US.

AND OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS, I HAVE GOTTEN SO MANY COMMENTS ABOUT NOT ONLY YOU PERSONALLY, BUT THE RESULTS THAT YOU HAVE BROUGHT OUR COMMUNITY JOSE, AND IT HAS BEEN SUCH A TRANSFORMATIVE DECADE THAT YOU HAVE BROUGHT TO OUR COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN BRINGING THE PASSION, BRINGING THE STRENGTH, BRINGING THE RIGHT PEOPLE ALONG BECAUSE YOU YOURSELF CAN'T DO IT.

YOU NEED TO HAVE A TEAM ALONG WITH YOU. FOR EVERYONE IN THE COMMUNITY, ADMINISTRATION, FACULTY, STAFF CLASSIFIED EVERYONE, AND BEING A LEADER IN BEING THE FACE OF OUR COLLEGE HAS REALLY BROUGHT OUR COLLEGE TO NOT JUST STATEWIDE NOTORIETY, BUT NATIONAL NOTORIETY.

PEOPLE LOOK TO US AND IN FACT, AS YOU'VE SAID, WE'RE GOING TO BE THE GREENEST CAMPUS IN THE NATION.

AND WE HAVE GRADUATED SO MANY STUDENTS. WE'VE GONE FROM ABOUT 2300, ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO TO NOW.

CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, 9300 SOME ODD. AND IT'S JUST SUCH AN INCREDIBLE CHANGE OF WHO WE ARE AS A COLLEGE.

AND I GET SO MANY COMMENTS ABOUT HOW, IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE, THEY DON'T RECOGNIZE THIS CAMPUS ANYMORE,

BECAUSE NOT ONLY HAVE WE BUILT NEW BUILDINGS TO BE STATE OF THE ART, BUT THE PROGRAMS THAT CONTINUE TO LEAD AND PIONEER AND INNOVATE FOR US IS A DIRECT RESULT OF EVERY SINGLE DAY THAT YOU HAVE MADE YOUR LEADERSHIP SHOW THROUGHOUT EVERY FACET OF THIS COLLEGE.

SO GOING BACK TEN YEARS AGO, I KNOW THAT WE MADE THAT RIGHT DECISION, AND I LOOK FORWARD TO AS MANY MORE YEARS AS YOU'RE WILLING TO GIVE TO OUR COLLEGE.

THREE INITIATIVES THERE TECHNOLOGY EFFECTIVENESS AND EFFICIENCY AND EFFICIENCIES.

AND IT WAS GREAT GOING TO THE STUDENT STUDENT BODY ON THESE, HEARING SOME OF THEIR PAIN POINTS.

AND I'M ALREADY LOOKING AT WAYS TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR THEM BECAUSE THEY'RE SAYING WI-FI, EVEN GETTING CONNECTED IS A PAIN.

AND THAT WAS A BIG I HEARD THAT MANY TIMES. AND EVEN JUST SITTING IN THE ROOM ANSWERING QUESTIONS, IT JUST SHOWED THAT WE NEED TO GIVE THEM HAVE PRESENT MORE TO THE STUDENTS BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT WE HAVE OUT THERE.

AND I'M GOING TO BE WORKING WITH PROBABLY GOING MORE REGULARLY TO THOSE MEETINGS AND AND BEING THERE AS A RESOURCE, PRESENTING, GETTING THAT STUFF OUT. IT'S GREAT.

I NOW HAVE A SECURITY MANAGER WHO'S GOING TO MANY OF THESE ITEMS ARE GOING TO FALL ON HIS HIS PLATE TO HELP US WITH SO WE HAVE MANY THINGS.

IT IS A LOT. BUT I MANY OF THESE ITEMS WERE STUFF THAT HAVE BEEN ALREADY ON OUR, OUR PLATE.

THE ACADEMY TARGETS NEW MANAGERS, ASPIRING MANAGERS AND THOSE SEEKING LEADERSHIP ROLES AT CERRITOS COLLEGE.

THE GOAL OF THIS PROGRAM IS TO DEVELOP SUCCESSFUL LEADERS THROUGH STRUCTURED EXPERIENCES GROUNDED IN SOUND PRACTICES, GUIDED DISCOVERY, AND REAL WORLD APPLICATIONS THROUGH A CAPSTONE PROJECT WHERE PARTICIPANTS IDENTIFY A PROBLEM WITHIN THE CAMPUS, DEVELOP A STRATEGIC PLAN, AND DEVELOP GOALS TOWARD IMPLEMENTATION.

SO WHEN WE WERE CONSIDERING WHAT WE WERE GOING TO PROPOSE, THE FIRST INSTITUTIONAL NEED THAT WE THOUGHT ABOUT WAS THE NEED TO INCREASE DATA LITERACY ON CAMPUS. WE CONSIDERED A FEW DIFFERENT CATEGORIES, SUCH AS DATA EQUITY AND DATA INTERPRETATION, WHICH WILL ALL ALLOW OUR CAMPUS COMMUNITY TO ACCURATELY TELL OUR STORY.

AND IF EVERYONE CAN ACCURATELY TELL OUR STORY IN A WAY THAT PORTRAYS THE TRUE EXPERIENCES OF OUR STUDENTS, THEN WE CAN START MAKING DATA INFORMED DECISIONS TO MOVE THE NEEDLE ON STUDENT SUCCESS.

THE SECOND NEED THAT WE WANTED TO ADDRESS WAS ACCREDITATION.

WITH THE NEW STANDARDS, THEY ARE MORE COLLABORATIVE IN NATURE AND THEY FOCUS ON HAVING A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY AMONGST ALL CONSTITUENTS OF THE COLLEGE.

SO THIS WOULD MEET THE FOUR DIFFERENT STANDARDS.

AND THEN THE THIRD INSTITUTIONAL NEED IS TO DEVELOP OUR EMPLOYEES TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE BEST POSITIONED TO SUPPORT OUR GOAL, WHICH WE KNOW IS TO GRADUATE AT LEAST 50% OF OUR STUDENTS WITHIN FIVE YEARS OR LESS, WHICH IS HOUSED WITHIN OUR STUDENTS FIRST FRAMEWORK, WHICH IS OUR TEN YEAR EDUCATIONAL MASTER PLAN.

SO THE PROPOSAL IS FOR A DATA ACADEMY. IN THE FIRST PHASE OF THAT WOULD BE A PILOT PROGRAM, WHICH IS A MORE LESS FORMALIZED STRUCTURE WITH MULTIPLE WORKSHOPS THAT WILL ALLOW US TO RESEARCH AND UNDERSTAND THE ACTUAL NEEDS OF THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY SO THAT WE CAN DEVELOP THE ACADEMY TO MEET THOSE NEEDS. THE ACADEMY ITSELF WILL BE A COHORT MODEL, SIMILAR TO THE FLA, WHERE PARTICIPANTS WILL GO TO EACH WORKSHOP. THE CONTENT.

WE HAVE SOME EXAMPLES LISTED HERE AND THAT WILL ALSO BE DEVELOPED FURTHER THROUGH THE PILOT PROGRAM.

LASTLY, WHEN THEY COMPLETE THE ACADEMY THEY WILL GET A NICE CERTIFICATE, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, THEY WILL HAVE A DATA TOOLKIT THAT WILL ALLOW THEM TO AGAIN TELL OUR STORY MORE ACCURATELY SO THAT THEY CAN INCREASE STUDENT SUCCESS.

SO IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN, REALLY COLLABORATION AMONG THE INSTITUTION TO ENSURE THAT ALL LEVELS IT'S SUPPORTED FROM HUMAN RESOURCES ASPECT FROM CSIA CX, WHICH IS OUR CENTER FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE, TO ALLOW TIME AND SPACE FOR ALL CAMPUS CONSTITUENTS TO PARTICIPATE.

AND THIS IS OUR TENTATIVE TIMELINE. IT'S A LITTLE AGGRESSIVE.

WE'RE HOPING TO ACCOMPLISH THIS BY THE END OF NEXT YEAR AND LAUNCH IT.

AND IT'S TRUE RESEARCHERS THAT WE ARE WE WOULD BE ASSESSING AND EVALUATING THE ART PROGRAM TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT.

AND THEN LASTLY, TO CLOSE OFF WE ALL SHARED SHARE ONE GOAL AS AN INSTITUTION AND THAT'S TO GRADUATE OUR STUDENTS.

SO WITH THIS INITIATIVE, WE'RE HOPING TO CREATE A COMMUNITY OF DATA INFORMED STAKEHOLDERS THAT HELP WITH THE INSTITUTIONAL GOAL TO MEET OUR STUDENTS AND GET THEM TO GRADUATE. SO WITH BUILDING THAT SENSE OF COMMUNITY, WE'RE HELPING TO CREATE THAT SENSE OF BELONGING NOT ONLY FOR STUDENTS, BUT FOR STAFF AND FACULTY. SO WE CAN ALL SAY THAT WE ARE CERRITOS COMPLETE.

AND WHY IS THIS MENTORING PROGRAM IMPORTANT. AND WHY IT MATTERS IS BECAUSE WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE COMPLETING THEIR EDUCATION.

AND WE'VE IDENTIFIED FIVE CHALLENGES HERE. I'M NOT GOING TO GO THROUGH EACH ONE OF THEM, BUT THE CHALLENGES ALSO HAVE A SOLUTION AND REALLY WHAT WE WANT TO DO.

WE RECOGNIZE THAT THERE ARE OTHER MENTORSHIP PROGRAMS HERE ON CAMPUS LIKE UMOJA AND PUENTE, BUT WE WANT TO EXPAND ON IT. AND THE SCHOLARLY RESEARCH DOES SHOW THAT WHEN STUDENTS HAVE CONNECTIONS WITH THE FACULTY AND WITH THE STAFF AND THEY USE STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES, THEY COMPLETE.

AND THAT'S REALLY EXCITING. SO I'D LIKE EVERYONE IN THE ROOM TO THINK ABOUT WHO IS THE PERSON WHO HELPED YOU GET TO THE POSITION YOU ARE TODAY. IT WAS EITHER A FORMAL OR AN INFORMAL PERSON WHO CAME AND TOLD YOU YOU COULD DO SOMETHING THAT YOU MAYBE THOUGHT YOU COULD NOT.

WE HAVE SO MANY STUDENTS ON OUR CAMPUS WHO SEE THESE DEGREES AS REALLY FAR REACHING, UNTIL THEY MEET SOMEONE WHO'S IN THAT PROFESSION OR HAS THAT DEGREE, WHO TEACHES THEM THAT THEY CAN BE THAT PERSON BECAUSE IT BECOMES ATTAINABLE? BECOMES A PERSON THEY KNOW, NOT JUST A DREAM IN THE SKY.

SO WHO'S INVOLVED IN THIS MENTORSHIP PROGRAM? THIS IS THE EXCITING PART. IT'S MANAGERS, DEANS, FACULTY, CLASSIFIED STAFF.

WHEN WE PRESENTED THIS TO THE COHORT AT THE FALCON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY, 12 OF THE 15 ISH PEOPLE IN THE ROOM SAID RIGHT NOW, AND THEY ACTUALLY CREATED THEIR OWN SIGN UP SHEET AND SAID, WE WANT TO BE A MENTOR RIGHT NOW. AND THAT WAS REALLY EXCITING.

WE HAVE STAFF ON CAMPUS WHO DON'T HAVE WITHIN TYPICAL OR TYPICAL JOB DESCRIPTION, THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHINE IN THIS WAY.

AND THEY HAVE PASSION BEHIND THE EDUCATION THEY HAVE THAT THEY'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH PEOPLE.

THEN WE HAVE OUR STUDENTS, THE MENTEES. THESE ARE STUDENTS WHO ARE ACADEMICALLY ENGAGED. THEY'VE PASSED 15 UNITS.

THEY HAVE A 2.0 GPA, AND THEY'RE CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN NINE UNITS.

THIS CONTINUES TO PUSH OUR STUDENTS TOWARD THE ACADEMIC GOALS THAT WE'VE WE'VE TALKED ABOUT AND OUR KEY ELEMENTS ARE THAT WE WOULD HAVE A STRUCTURED CURRICULUM BETWEEN THE MENTORS AND MENTEES. WE WILL ALSO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE OUR ALUMNI TO TALK WITH STUDENTS ABOUT THEIR CAREERS AS WELL.

AND WHEN WHEN THIS PROGRAM IS COMPLETED, A $250 SCHOLARSHIP FOR EVERY STUDENT WHO PARTICIPATES IN THE MENTOR PROGRAM.

SO LET'S TALK ABOUT THE BUDGET, THEN. THE FOUNDATION IS VERY INVOLVED IN THIS, IN THIS PLAN WE'RE LOOKING AT A BUDGET FOR FOR THOSE THAT FIRST PILOT PROGRAM OF STUDENTS OF ONLY 67, 50, ALLOWING FOR ALL THE STUDENTS TO RECEIVE THEIR SCHOLARSHIP.

AND THEN THERE'S SOME ADMIN FEES. SO AT ABOUT 74% GOING DIRECT COST TO STUDENTS WE WOULD WANT TO DESIGN THE FRAMEWORK IN THE SUMMER, RECRUIT IN THE FALL AND THEN START THE PROGRAM IN THE SPRING.

AND THE PROGRAM THEN WOULD LAUNCH FROM SPRING TO FALL, WORKING ON RETENTION FROM SPRING TO FALL AS WELL FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE ENGAGED IN THIS PROGRAM. ALL RIGHT. SO OUR IMPACT AND OUR PROGRAM'S ALIGNMENT WITH THE STUDENTS FIRST FRAMEWORK, WE INTENTIONALLY WANTED IT TO BE A ONE YEAR PROGRAM THAT STARTED IN THE SPRING AND ENDS THE FOLLOWING SPRING, SO THAT WE COULD HELP WITH RETENTION. WE KNOW STUDENTS TEND TO DISENGAGE DURING SUMMER WHEN THEY HAVE THAT SUMMER MELT, SO THIS ALLOWS THEM TO BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR MENTOR AND THEN PUMP THEM UP TO CONTINUE IN THE FALL AND KEEP GOING WITH THE DIFFERENT LEVERS.

AS FAR AS ACADEMIC PROGRESS GOES THE MENTOR CAN LOOK AT THE MENTEES STUDENT EDUCATION PLAN AND MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE ON TRACK TO KEEP GOING, TAKING THE CORRECT UNITS AND HELPING PUSHING THEM ALONG.

ONCE WE KNOW THEIR CAREER AND TRANSFER GOALS, WE CAN CONNECT THEM WITH CAREER SERVICES, CONNECT THEM WITH THE TRANSFER CENTER, AND ALSO LOOK AT OUR ALUMNI POOL AND SEE STUDENTS THAT HAVE GONE THROUGH OUR PROGRAMS AND WHAT JOBS THEY'VE ATTAINED SINCE THEN SO THAT WE CAN LINK THEM UP SO THEY HAVE ROLE MODELS IN THE FIELD FOR EQUITABLE ACCESS AND BELONGING.

WE REALLY WANT TO REACH THOSE STUDENTS THAT NEED THE HELP AND ARE LOOKING FOR THE EXPERTISE TO, LIKE, KEEP MOVING THROUGH OUR SYSTEM AND REACH THEIR CAREER GOALS.

AND SO, YOU KNOW, WHILE WE YOU KNOW, CERTAINLY SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITIES, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE CAN ALL AGREE ON ARE THE PRINCIPLES THAT ARE PUT IN THIS RESOLUTION THAT MIRROR EXACTLY WHAT THE PROBLEM SOLVERS CAUCUS DID, WHICH SAY THAT UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS AND DACA RECIPIENTS HAVE CONTRIBUTED GREATLY TO CALIFORNIA'S CULTURE AND ECONOMY FOR DECADES.

A SECURE BORDER IS ESSENTIAL TO COMBATING THE ILLEGAL DRUG TRADE, PREVENTING HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND ENSURING NATIONAL SECURITY, AND THAT DUE PROCESS IS GUARANTEED BY THE 14TH AMENDMENT TO ENSURE EQUAL PROTECTION AND EQUAL TREATMENT UNDER THE LAW.

AND IT IS A FOUNDATIONAL VALUE OF OUR DEMOCRACY AND OUR REPUBLIC.

MANY UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS ARE LONG TERM RESIDENTS AND WORK IN ESSENTIAL OCCUPATIONS, PAYING SUBSTANTIAL PAYROLL TAXES, AND WOULD CONTRIBUTE EVEN MORE IF PROVIDED LEGAL STATUS.

AND A PATH TO LEGAL STATUS SHOULD EXIST FOR UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS THAT POSE NO THREAT TO PUBLIC SAFETY.

SO BY ADOPTING THIS RESOLUTION, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE CAN SPEAK TO BOTH OF OUR REPRESENTATIVES, OR AT LEAST THE ONES THAT ARE REPRESENTING THE COLLEGE, BUT THERE ARE AT LEAST ONE MORE THAT REPRESENTS A GARCIA FOR DOWNEY.

SO WE HAVE ABOUT THREE OR SO THAT WE SEND THIS RESOLUTION TO, TO ENSURE THAT WE NEED TO SOLVE THE IMMIGRATION PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN FESTERING FOR MANY DECADES, AND THAT HAS LED TO THE SITUATION THAT WE ARE IN.

ALL THREE OF US ARE FIRST GENERATION STUDENTS WITH IMMIGRANT FAMILIES, MIXED STATUS FAMILIES.

SO WE WE NEEDED TO DO SOMETHING. SO THROUGH BRAINSTORMING AND COLLABORATION WITH UNDOCU SCHOLARS, THE IMMIGRANT STUDENT ALLIANCE CLUB, AND THE FALCONS, WE HAVE CREATED A NEW PROJECT TO SERVE OUR IMMIGRANT STUDENT POPULATION, THE SUMMER CARING FALCONS PROJECT. SO THIS PROJECT IS TO HELP FAMILIES BY DISTRIBUTING FOOD TO THEM.

SO OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE SURE THAT NO ONE WILL HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THEIR NEXT MEAL IF THEY'RE SCARED TO GO OUT TO GROCERY STORES, LIKE AS MANY OF OUR FAMILIES ARE.
