FURTHERMORE, REGARDING DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION, DEI FACULTY WHO LEAD AFFINITY GROUPS AND DEI EFFORTS RESPECTFULLY REQUEST YOUR CONTINUED ADVOCACY FOR POLICIES THAT PROMOTE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY AND PROTECT AGAINST DISCRIMINATION IN ALL OF ITS FORMS. SO THESE STUDENTS, WE ARE SEEING THEM, THEY CONTINUE TO STRUGGLE WITH THESE GATEWAY MATH COURSES, WHICH IS CLEARLY ESSENTIAL FOR DEGREE AND COMPLETION.
SO SOME OF THE CHALLENGE WE KNOW ALREADY THAT THESE STUDENTS THAT COME INTO THE SCHOOL AND THEY'RE TAKING IF THEY DON'T TAKE THE MATH COURSES EARLY ENOUGH, THEY HAVE A MUCH HIGHER CHANCE OF ATTRITION.
WE KNOW THAT. SO WE ARE TRYING TO DEAL WITH THAT.
SO MANY OF THEM LACK CONFIDENCE AND FOUNDATIONAL GAPS IN MATH, MAKING COURSES LIKE STATISTICS AND PRE-CALCULUS JUST OVERWHELMING FOR THEM. AND SO WE SEE THAT EVERY DAY.
AND IT'S REALLY AFFECTING HIM IN A BIG WAY. AS WE SEE IN THE DATA FROM THE AB 1705.

AND I'M SURE THAT'S DONE IN THE INDIVIDUAL CLASSES.
BUT TO HAVE THAT KIND OF THEME MY UNDERSTANDING WAS THAT IN STATISTICS IN MOTION, I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE BE DEVELOPED AS SOMETHING THAT WE CAN CONTINUE AGAIN AS PART OF CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE PRACTICES, ANY KIND OF YOU KNOW, DEPARTMENT THAT YOU WANT TO PUT IT IN. MAKING MATH RELEVANT IS WOULD HELP ME, ESPECIALLY IN STATISTICS, UNDERSTAND AND BE ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD. BUT ON TOP OF, YOU KNOW, MANY OTHERS WHO DON'T HAVE MATH AS ONE OF THEIR STRONG SUITS, WHETHER THEY PSYCHOLOGICALLY FEEL THAT IT ISN'T, EVEN THOUGH IT REALLY ISN'T OR, YOU KNOW, IT'S JUST NOT SOMETHING THAT THEY CARE TO LOOK FOR AND THEY'RE REALLY SCARED FOR. I THINK YOU KNOW, AS YOU SAID, IT WAS A SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM. SO I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE CAN TAKE A LOOK FORWARD IN MAKING INITIATIVES TO MAKE RELATABLE CURRICULUM LIKE THAT.

I THINK IT WOULD BE, FRANKLY, INHUMANE FOR THEIR JOURNEY AND THEIR DREAM TO BE CUT SHORT.
SO WHAT WE CAN DO AT THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE LEVEL IS TO CREATE A POLICY, AND THIS IS SOMETHING THAT'S GOING TO BE INVESTIGATED FURTHER AND DISCUSSED IN DETAIL OVER THIS COMING SEMESTER OF HOW WE CAN MAKE SURE THAT THOSE STUDENTS WHO STARTED THEIR CAREER HERE, AND EVENTUALLY, ESPECIALLY IF THEY WANT TO COME BACK TO THE UNITED STATES LEGALLY, THAT WE WILL MAKE SURE THAT THEIR JOURNEY AND THEIR DEGREE CAN BE EARNED WHILE THEY ARE WAITING FOR THEIR LEGAL ENTRY, EITHER DUE TO AN ACTUAL DEPORTATION OR DUE TO A FEAR OF DEPORTATION.
SO, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE I BELIEVE THAT NO, NO PERSON SHOULD CHOOSE BETWEEN THEIR FAMILY AND THEIR SELVES VERSUS THEIR EDUCATION, AND WE WANT TO BE THERE WITH THEIR PARTNER AS A COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
IT'S IN THE NAME TO MAKE SURE THAT THOSE WHO CAME TO US FOR ADVANCING THEIR CAREERS AND ADVANCING THEIR EDUCATION, THAT WE KEEP OUR PROMISE TO THEM NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS TO THEIR RESIDENCY.

WE WERE GOING TO BRING UP A RESOLUTION TO THE SCC GENERAL ASSEMBLY HAPPENING IN APRIL TO TALK ABOUT TO KIND OF LIKE IMPROVE TUTORING AND COUNSELING SERVICES BECAUSE WE REALIZED THAT IT WASN'T ONLY HAPPENING LIKE A HAPPENING AT CERRITOS COLLEGE, BUT ALSO OTHER CAMPUSES AS WELL.
