SHE'S BEEN WORKING FOR THE COLLEGE FOR OVER 20 YEARS, AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME SHE IS BEING RECOGNIZED FOR EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH.

AND I THINK IT'S WONDERFUL TO SEE OUR LONG TIME EMPLOYEES BEING RECOGNIZED FOR THE HARD WORK THEY DO.

AND SOMETIMES, AS YOU KNOW, WE WE GET OUR AGES AND OUR YEARS OF SERVICE.

WE KIND OF JUST FALL BEHIND.

SO IT'S REALLY NICE TO SEE THAT WE'RE GOING TO ACKNOWLEDGE A LONG TERM EMPLOYEE TODAY.

SO SO IT'S VERY EXCITING AND VERY ENDEARING TO MY HEART BECAUSE SHE IS SUCH A LOVELY PERSON.

SHE'S VERY GOOD AT WORKING WITH OUR STUDENTS AND OUR CLIENTS THAT COME INTO THE COSMETOLOGY DEPARTMENT.

SHE IS LITERALLY ONE OF THE LIFELINES THERE.

SHE HAS SO MUCH EXPERTISE AND IS WILLING TO GIVE SO MUCH BEYOND THE SCOPE OF HER JOB.

AND, YOU KNOW, SO I THINK THAT SHOWS WHY SHE'S BEING RECOGNIZED TODAY.

SO AND THAT'S ALL I'M GOING TO SAY FOR THE HAVE A GOOD NIGHT.

FOR THIS MONTH'S BOARD MEETING.

IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE A CHANCE TO JOIN US AT OUR SOME OF AT OUR SIGN BEAMING CEREMONY, THEN I WANT TO TAKE A MOMENT TO LET YOU KNOW.

THIS MEETING MARKS A SPECIAL OCCASION.

TODAY WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECOGNIZE DOCTOR JOSE FIERRO ON HIS NINE YEAR ANNIVERSARY AS THE PRESIDENT SUPERINTENDENT OF CERRITOS COLLEGE.

TO PUT NINE YEARS INTO PERSPECTIVE, THE AVERAGE TENURE OF A CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE CEO IS 5.1 YEARS.

AND AS TIME GOES ON, THIS AVERAGE IS ONLY DECREASING.

HAVING STABILITY IN LEADERSHIP AT OUR INSTITUTION IS AN INCREDIBLE ASSET TO OUR STUDENTS, OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR TEAM TO SHOWCASE HOW MUCH OF AN ASSET THIS IS, WE WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT DOCTOR FIERRO WITH THIS GIFT.

IN THIS GIFT, WE HIGHLIGHT ALL OF OUR INSTITUTION'S ACHIEVEMENTS OVER THE LAST NINE YEARS.

OVER 44,000 DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES AWARDED 2018 EXAMPLES OF EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER FOR CERRITOS COMPLETE AND THE

FIRST EVER BACHELOR'S DEGREE APPROVED FOR DENTAL HYGIENE.

THESE ARE ONLY A FEW OF THE MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS UNDER DOCTOR FIERRO'S TENURE.

THE WORLD HAS CHANGED OVER THE LAST NINE YEARS, BUT CERRITOS COLLEGE HAS AND ALWAYS WILL PUT OUR STUDENTS FIRST.

WE CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

I THINK YOU'VE ALSO THE REASON WHY THAT'S MEANINGFUL, I THINK, IS NOT JUST BECAUSE YOU'VE STUCK AROUND US WHICH IS AN ACCOMPLISHMENT IN AND OF ITSELF.

BUT ALSO BECAUSE OF BEING ABOVE AVERAGE IN TERMS OF THE, THE, WHAT YOU'RE DELIVERING IN YOUR ROLE.

AND OBVIOUSLY ALL THE LISTS OF ACHIEVEMENTS THERE HAVE SPAN A HUGE VARIETY OF PEOPLE.

BUT IN ORDER FOR GOOD PEOPLE TO WORK TOGETHER AND ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING, NINE TIMES OUT OF TEN, YOU NEED TO HAVE GOOD LEADERSHIP.

AND SO THAT'S BEEN REALLY MEANINGFUL.

AND I THINK YOU CAN TELL FROM THE LIST OF ACHIEVEMENTS THAT IS PROBABLY ONLY PARTIAL, THAT WE'VE WE'VE DONE THAT MORE THAN NINE TIMES OUT OF TEN.

SO I THINK YOU GET YOU GET TO TAKE CREDIT.

AND I KNOW YOU'RE SLOW TO TAKE CREDIT FOR THOSE THINGS.

AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO NINE MORE YEARS, PROBABLY 18 MORE, HOWEVER MANY MORE YEARS HERE.

BUT I JUST WANT TO JUST THANK YOU FOR FOR THAT, I KNOW, YOU KNOW, THERE WERE THERE WAS A TIME DURING COVID WHEN DOCTOR FIERO AND I SAT DOWN AND HAD SOME REALLY, LIKE, TOUGH CONVERSATIONS ABOUT.

WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN? RIGHT? THE WORLD WAS SO UNCERTAIN AND IT WAS WASN'T CLEAR, LIKE, WHAT DOES THIS COLLEGE EVEN GOING TO BE AFTER AFTERWARD? AND, YOU KNOW, THROUGH A LOT OF THROUGH A LOT OF SOUL SEARCHING AND THEN IDEA MAKING AND THEN PLANNING AND THEN STRATEGY AND MOSTLY ALL ON DOCTOR FIERRO AND THE REST OF THE TEAM'S BEHALF.

LIKE WE CAME OUT THE OTHER SIDE AND WE CAME OUT STRONGER.

AND IT WASN'T JUST THAT WE'VE HAD NINE YEARS, IT'S THAT WE'VE HAD A REALLY DIFFICULT AND REALLY AMAZING NINE YEARS IN THESE LAST PERIOD.

SO KUDOS TO YOU, DOCTOR FIERRO.

AND AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO ALL THE YEARS AHEAD.

I CAME ON THE BOARD SHORTLY BEFORE DOCTOR FIERRO CAME ON, AND I THINK WE ARE LIVING IN THE BEST TIMELINE RIGHT NOW BECAUSE OF THE CHOICES THAT WE MADE AT THAT TIME. THIS IS WHAT SOME MIGHT CALL THE CANON EVENT OF CERRITOS COLLEGE THAT WE GOT PLACED ON A PATH BECAUSE OF DOCTOR FIERRO'S TENACITY, LONGEVITY, VISION, ANY ANY NOUN THAT YOU WANT TO USE.

AND I AM JUST MORE AND MORE IMPRESSED YEAR BY YEAR.

AT YOUR LEADERSHIP IN MAKING SURE THAT CERRITOS COLLEGE IS NOT JUST DOING ITS JOB, IT'S GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND AND FINDING NOT ONLY THE

RIGHT PEOPLE TO FILL THE POSITIONS THAT HAVE COME AND GONE OVER THE YEARS, BUT TO ALSO WORK VERY CLOSELY WITH US AS BOARD MEMBERS, TRANSPARENTLY AND AT SUCH A LEVEL AS TO MAKE SURE THAT EACH OF US, AS INDIVIDUALS, HAVE OUR ABILITY TO PLACE OUR OWN MARK THROUGH YOU, THROUGH THE REST OF THE CAMPUS. I IT'S JUST INCREDIBLE TO SEE THIS BUILDING, LIKE YOU WERE SAYING EARLIER TODAY, THAT THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A CENTRAL LOCATION IN CERRITOS COLLEGE TO HAVE BEFORE.

AND I'VE GONE TO OTHER COLLEGES, YOU KNOW, OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS NOW THAT, YOU KNOW, HAVE THAT AND IT'S LIKE WHERE WHY DOESN'T CERRITOS HAVE THAT? AND I THINK THAT NOW THAT WE ARE GOING TO HAVE ONE AND PROBABLY THE BEST ONE IN ALL OF CALIFORNIA, IF NOT, YOU KNOW, WHATEVER REGION, WHATEVER, YOU KNOW AREA. BUT IT'S JUST IT'S BEEN AN INCREDIBLE TIME.

DOCTOR FIERRO, TO NEARLY DOUBLE THE AVERAGE OF A SUPERINTENDENT.

YOU'RE KIND OF LIKE THAT WEIGHT ON THE OTHER END PUSHING THE MEDIAN OR PUSHING THE MEAN SOMEONE WHO'S A DATA ANALYST.

JUST TELL ME IF I'M WRONG.

BUT IT'S BEEN GREAT, DOCTOR FIERRO AND I LOOK FORWARD TO MANY, MANY MORE YEARS OF YOUR LEADERSHIP IN MAKING OUR COLLEGE EXEMPLARY IN THE NATION.

AND WE COULDN'T DO THAT WITHOUT THE STUDENTS TO SAY, HEY, I THINK THINGS COULD BE A LITTLE BETTER FOR US IF YOU GUYS LOOK AT THINGS THIS WAY.

SO I THINK IT TAKES A COMBINATION OF PEOPLE TO DO WHAT WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS.

AND. I CONSIDER MYSELF INCREDIBLY FORTUNATE.

I'VE BEEN HERE AT CERRITOS COLLEGE.

I NEVER IMAGINED DOING A JOB LIKE THIS.

AND HERE WE ARE.

NEVER IMAGINED STAYING THIS LONG.

AND HERE WE ARE.

AND AND AND EVERY DAY IS IS BETTER.

OF COURSE WE DO HAVE DIFFERENT DIFFICULT DAYS.

WE ARE NOT A PERFECT PLACE, BUT I DON'T THINK PERFECT PLACES EXIST.

AND THE GRASS IS NOT ALWAYS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE.

THE GRASS IS GREENER WHERE YOU WATER IT.

AND I THINK WE HAVE BEEN DOING THAT DAY IN AND DAY OUT SO OUR GRASS IS GREENER BECAUSE WE WATER THAT GRASS.

AND I JUST CAN'T REALLY REMEMBER DAYS IN WHICH I DON'T WANT TO COME TO WORK.

I LIKE TO COME TO WORK HERE.

I LIKE TO DO WHAT WE DO WHICH IS PART OF THE REASON WHY I FEEL SO FORTUNATE, BECAUSE OF COURSE THE JOBS ARE HARD.

BUT IF YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING THAT YOU DON'T LIKE, I ASSUMING IT WILL BE THAT MUCH HARDER.

NOW, I HAVE NO BEEN ABLE TO MAKE IT NINE YEARS BY CONTRADICTING MY BOSSES.

BUT I GUESS I'M GOING TO TAKE SOME LIBERTIES SINCE EVERYONE IS IN A GOOD MOOD TODAY.

AND 5.1 WAS THE WORK THAT HAPPENED TO TO UP TO 2019.

SO WHEN I FIRST CAME IN, I FOOLISHLY JUMPED INTO AN A STATEWIDE COMMITTEE THAT I WASN'T SURE WHAT IT WAS.

AND PART OF THE WORK WE DID WAS A LOT OF TRAINING AT THE STATE LEVEL FOR TRUSTEES AND CEOS, AND MARISA EVENTUALLY ENDED UP GETTING INTO THE SAME COMMITTEE, BUT FROM THE BOARD SIDE AND THROUGH A LOT OF WORK DURING THAT TIME, THE TENURE OF PRESIDENTS INCREASED IN CALIFORNIA. SO AT THE TIME WHEN WE CAME IN, IT WAS ABOUT THREE YEARS.

IT IT WENT CLOSER TO FIVE OR SOMEWHERE AROUND THERE.

BUT AFTER COVID ACTUALLY IS RIGHT BELOW THE TWO, THE THREE YEAR MARK.

SO THE THE THE FUNNY PART OF THIS YEAR IS I WAS SPEAKING THIS MORNING WITH A COLLEAGUE AND WE WERE TALKING

ABOUT SOME ISSUES THAT ARE TAKING PLACE AT THE STATE.

AND HE SAID, WELL, WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING.

AND I SAID, WHY US? AND HE SAID, WELL, BECAUSE WE'RE THE SENIOR PEOPLE.

AND WE STARTED LAUGHING BECAUSE BOTH OF US HAVE BEEN AT THE SYSTEM AS CEOS FOR, FOR QUITE SOME TIME. THEY I DON'T NECESSARILY THINK NINE YEARS IS A LONG TIME FOR YOU TO BECOME A SENIOR PERSON ON ANYTHING, BUT THERE IS ONLY.

I THINK IT'S 15 OF US.

THEY HAVE BEEN SIX OR MORE YEARS AT THE ENTIRE STATE AT THIS PARTICULAR TIME.

I THINK IT TAKES LIKE 60% OF ALL CEOS TO MAKE THE TOTAL TENURE OF YEARS.

THE DOCTOR VAN HOOK, THE VAN HOOK THE COLLEGE OF THE CANYON HAS BEEN SERVING.

WHAT THAT BASICALLY MEANS IS THAT THE MAJORITY OF THE CEOS AT THE STATE LEVEL ARE ONE YEAR, FIRST YEAR CEOS.

THE SECOND LARGEST GROUPS ARE TWO YEAR CEOS.

AND I FEEL VERY FORTUNATE TO BE HERE BECAUSE I FEEL THAT STABILITY IS NOT JUST GOOD FOR THE INSTITUTION, BUT I FEEL THAT YOU'RE ALSO HELPING ME BY GIVING ME A STABILITY AND A SENSE OF BELONGING.

STATE BUDGET UPDATE.

SO WE ONLY HAVE A COUPLE OF COMMENTS ON THAT.

THE FIRST ONE IS THE OBVIOUSLY, WE APPROVED THE TENTATIVE BUDGET LAST LAST BOARD MEETING, AND THE SECOND ONE IS THE SINCE WE HAVE RECEIVED THE GOOD NEWS THAT OUR FUNDING FOR HOUSING NOW IS A REALITY.

SO WE ARE WAITING FOR THE DETAILS AS TO HOW WE'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE MONEY AND SPEND THE MONEY AND SO ON, BUT NOW IT'S ACTUALLY A DONE DEAL.

SB 155 WAS ALREADY APPROVED, SIGNED, AND NOW WE'RE JUST SIMPLY WAITING FOR THE DETAILS.

SO UNLESS SOMETHING REALLY DRASTIC HAPPENS OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS, WE ARE VERY SAFE TO CONTINUE WITH THE PLANNING AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR NEW STUDENT HOUSING FACILITY.

SO, PHILIP. YEAH.

AND AS DOCTOR, YOU KNOW, THE BILL HAS BEEN SIGNED.

NOW WE'RE JUST WORKING OUT THE DETAILS AND THE MECHANICS BEHIND THAT.

SO THE STATE JUST PUBLISHED UPCOMING WEBINAR EARLY AUGUST TO LEARN MORE DETAILS ABOUT EXACTLY HOW THE STATE THE STATE LEASE REVENUE BOND WOULD WORK.

OBVIOUSLY, YOU KNOW WHAT'S IN SB 155.

IT DOES REQUIRE THE BOARD TO TAKE ACTION ON THAT, BECAUSE THERE IS GOING TO BE AN ACTUAL AGREEMENT THAT NEEDS TO BE APPROVED BETWEEN THE US, THE DISTRICT THE STATE AND I BELIEVE I FORGET THE, THE BODY THAT'S ACTUALLY OVERSEEN THE STATE LEASE REVENUE BOND.

I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT DIVISION THAT IS THAT'S ACTUALLY CONTROLLING PULLING THAT.

BUT THOSE THREE PARTIES WILL HAVE TO ENTER INTO A LEASE AGREEMENT ON THAT WITH A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT ELEMENTS THAT ARE REQUIRED.

SO MORE INFORMATION OBVIOUSLY IS GOING TO COME.

WELL, IT'LL REQUIRE FOR US TO EVEN PROCEED.

WE'LL REQUIRE THE BOARD TO APPROVE THAT AGREEMENT.

SO AS WE DEVELOP MORE DETAILS, WE'LL BE PROVIDING AND SHARING THAT WITH YOU AS THOSE AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE TO US TO SHARE, TO PUT YOU ON NOTICE WHEN WE SHOULD EXPECT THOSE AGREEMENTS TO START KIND OF MAKING ITS WAY TO THE BOARD FOR REVIEW AND APPROVAL ON THAT.

YEAH. SO WE HAVE JUST CAME OUT A SCHEMATIC DESIGN ON THAT.

SO WE'RE IN DESIGN DEVELOPMENT RIGHT NOW.

IT'S GOING GREAT.

WE DO PLAN TO PROVIDE AN UPDATE TO THE BOARD KIND OF ON THAT AND SHOW BECAUSE THE DESIGN HAS FROM WHAT ORIGINALLY WAS IN THE PROPOSAL, WHICH WAS SHARED WITH THE BOARD BECAUSE OF THE MODULAR CONSTRUCTION THAT WE'RE UTILIZING.

SO THE DESIGN HAS CHANGED A LITTLE BIT.

SO WE WOULD LIKE TO KIND OF PRESENT THAT TO THE BOARD AND GIVE YOU AN OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK AT THE DESIGN OF HOW EVERYTHING IS GOING TO FLOW IN THE BUILDING.

LINDA IS AN ALUMNUS OF CERRITOS COLLEGE AND BEGAN HER JOURNEY AS A COSMETOLOGY STUDENT, ATTENDING HER COSMETOLOGY LICENSE AND WORKING IN A SALON SETTING THAT ENABLED HER TO PROVIDE HER EXPERTISE TO COSMETOLOGY STUDENTS.

LINDA IS CARING, IS KIND, AND ALWAYS SHOWS COMPASSION FOR THE STUDENTS AS THEY LEARN HOW TO FORMULATE COLOR.

COLOR. COLOR, PRODUCTS NEEDED FOR THE SKIN CARE SERVICES, AND SO MUCH MORE.

LINDA IS A GO TO FOR THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY WHAT THEY NEED ASSISTANCE.

LINDA HAS VOLUNTEERED DURING LOCKS OF LOVE EVENT AND IS PROMINENT IN ASSISTING WITH RECRUITMENT EVENTS.

HER DEDICATION TO THE COSMETOLOGY FIELD IS SHOWCASED DAILY, AND THE COSMETOLOGY DEPARTMENT IS VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE HER ON HER TEAM.

I WANT TO POINT OUT SOMETHING THAT SOMEONE POINTED OUT TO ME.

IT'S ITEM NUMBER FIVE, THE IS ALL IN GOVERNMENT RELATIONS.

WHICH IS THE ONE ITEM WHERE ALL OF YOU FELT STRONGLY ABOUT.

THE WORK THE COLLECTIVELY THE BOARD DID IN THIS REGARD.

NOT THAT THE OTHER ITEMS ARE BAD, BUT THIS IT'S NOT NECESSARILY COMMON TO ALL OF YOU, MARK.
