THERE IS A FLAG OUT THERE. NEXT ITEM 1.03.
[1.03 Agenda Organization]
AGENDA. ORGANIZATION.WOULD ANYONE LIKE TO MOVE THE CHANGE THE ORDER OF THE AGENDA? YEAH, I HAVE A MOTION TO MOVE.
JUST DOCTOR FIERRO'S PORTION OF THE REPORT TO THE TOP OF THE AGENDA.
CAN I GET A SECOND? SECOND. THANK YOU, DOCTOR LOU.
SO WE'LL HAVE DOCTOR FIERRO GIVE HIS REPORT TODAY.
THE FIRST ONE FRIDAY, MAY 17TH, OUR COMMENCEMENT.
SO I'M GOING TO RELEASE A PIECE OF INFORMATION NOW THAT HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED YET, BUT I'M GLAD THERE'S A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE TO LISTEN TO THAT.
LAST YEAR WE AWARDED ABOUT 6600 DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES.
AND THIS YEAR WILL BE AWARDING 7667 68 DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES, SO ABOUT 1000 MORE THAN THE PREVIOUS YEAR, MAKING THIS THE LARGEST GRADUATING CLASS AT CERRITOS COLLEGE.
YOU KEEP YOU KEEP TELLING US NOT TO EXPECT THAT NEXT YEAR AND THEN THE NEXT YEAR.
NO, NO. I'M PRETTY, I'M PRETTY.
I'M PRETTY SCARED NOW BECAUSE THESE NUMBERS ARE GETTING TOO BIG.
SO I DON'T KNOW IF WE CAN TOP IT UP NEXT YEAR.
YES, WE HAVE BEEN TRACKING KPIS.
WE HAVE BEEN TRACKING ATTENDANCE.
WE HAVE BEEN TRACKING WHAT WE DO IN THE LIBRARY.
WE HAVE BEEN TRACKING WHAT WE DO AT THE TUTORING CENTER.
WE HAVE BEEN TRACKING ESSENTIALLY WHAT ALL OF THE DEPARTMENTS HAVE BEEN WORKING ON, AND WE'RE TRYING TO FOLLOW THE DATA AND MAKE DECISIONS BASED ON WHAT WE SEE THAT COULD BE OF THE BEST IMPACT FOR OUR STUDENTS AND IS CLEARLY TRANSLATING INTO SUCCESS.
CALL CERRITOS COLLEGE TO INTERVIEW A NUMBER OF PEOPLE HERE AND LOOK AT OUR DATA.
BASED ON AN INDEPENDENT RESEARCH THEY DID FROM OUR IPADS, DATA IN WHICH THEY IDENTIFY CERRITOS COLLEGE AS ONE OF THE INSTITUTIONS IN THE NATION THAT IS CLOSING ACHIEVEMENT GAPS AMONG MINORITY STUDENTS IN A IN A MEANINGFUL WAY.
SO AGAIN, THIS IS A REFLECTION OF THE WORK THAT EVERYONE HAS BEEN DOING ON CAMPUS.
WE HAVE ALSO BEGUN OUR CELEBRATIONS ON CAMPUS.
OVER THE LAST WEEK AND A HALF.
WE HAVE HAD CELEBRATIONS BASICALLY EVERY DAY.
ONE OF THE BIGGEST ONES THAT WE HAVE WAS ON MONDAY EVENING WITH EOPS AND LINK.
WE HAD IN EOPS AND LINK THE LARGEST GRADUATION AS WELL.
499 STUDENTS WERE GRADUATING FROM LINCOLN EOPS, AND THE AVERAGE DEGREE AND CERTIFICATES AWARD PER STUDENT IN THAT GROUP WAS A LITTLE OVER TWO.
SO ESSENTIALLY A LITTLE BIT OVER TWO PER STUDENT.
[00:05:03]
AND AGAIN A GREAT COMMITMENT TO THE TO TO STUDENT SUCCESS AND SERVICES ACROSS CAMPUS.ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF OR SO, WE VISIT A COLLEGE THAT IS CALLED IMPERIAL VALLEY COLLEGE DOWN IN EL CENTRO BY THE BORDER HERE WITH MEXICO.
AND WE VISIT THEM TO TRY TO LEARN SOME OF THE STUDENT STRATEGIES THAT THEY'RE USING.
SO WE WENT THERE TO LEARN WHAT ELSE CAN WE DO TO CONTINUE TO IMPROVE STUDENT SUCCESS AND ACHIEVEMENT IN OUR INSTITUTION. AS A RESULT OF THAT, WE'RE HAVING SOME INTENTIONAL MEETINGS ON CAMPUS.
AND THE COMMITMENT OF EVERY MEETING IS THAT EVERY TIME WE DO SOMETHING ON THAT MEETING, AN ACTION ITEM NEEDS TO BE IDENTIFIED THAT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED BASED ON THE THINGS THAT WE LEARN. SO YOU'RE GOING TO START SEEING A FEW CHANGES IN THE UPCOMING SEMESTER OF HOW WE DO SOME OF OUR BUSINESS PRACTICES AND ALL IS FOCUS ACROSS OUR STUDENTS.
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST I I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET I HAD SAT BY A COUPLE OF OUR FACULTY MEMBERS PRIOR TO THIS MEETING, WHICH I APPRECIATED AND I UNDERSTAND.
TUTORING. SO ONE, THANK YOU FOR MAKING THE TIME TO COME HERE.
AND TWO, HAVE YOU HEARD THE TERM ABOUT FAKE NEWS? THIS IS SOMEWHAT WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE BECAUSE THAT WAS NEWS TO ME, WHO ULTIMATELY HAVE TO APPROVE ANY BUDGET CUTS THAT WILL PRESENT TO THE BOARD TO OR BY THE PRESIDENT OF BUSINESS SERVICES, WHO HAS TO REVIEW ALL THAT BEFORE HE EVEN COMES TO US.
AND OUR VICE PRESIDENT, WHO HAD TO BRING IT TO EXECUTIVE COUNCIL TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT THOSE ARE THINGS THAT WE ARE GOING TO CUT AT ANY GIVEN TIME.
I CAN TELL YOU THE THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS CUTS OF YOUR EMBEDDED TUTORING FOR MULTIPLE REASONS.
ONE AS YOU KNOW, IMPROVE STUDENT SUCCESS.
TWO, THAT IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE LEARN.
THE IMPERIAL VALLEY WAS DOING.
THREE PHILIPPE HAS BEEN LOOKING AT OUR DIFFERENT SOURCES OF DOLLARS TO BE ABLE TO BACKFILL SOME OF THE SHORTFALLS THAT WE ARE GOING TO BE EXPERIENCING DUE TO THE ESTATE SHORTFALL.
SO AS OF RIGHT NOW, ZERO CONVERSATIONS HAVE TAKEN PLACE ABOUT ACTUALLY ANY CUTS THE INSTITUTION.
AND AS WE KEPT REPEATING AND I WILL REPEAT AGAIN WHEN I DO THE BUDGET PRESENTATION OR GOAL AS WE MAKE ARRANGEMENTS IN OUR BUDGET, IS TO MAINTAIN FRONT SERVICES TO OUR STUDENTS AS INTACT AS WE CAN.
SO IF YOU ARE HEARING OF ANY CUTS ON YOUR FUNDING AND IN THIS CASE, EMBEDDED TUTORING, THOSE CONVERSATIONS ARE NOT TAKING PLACE.
YES, THERE ARE SHORTFALLS OF MONEY AT THE STATE LEVEL.
YES, THERE ARE SOME POOLS OF MONEY THAT THE STATE IS ALREADY COLLECTING AND TAKING BACK.
NO, WE ARE NOT CUTTING INTERNALLY, AT LEAST NOT YET.
AND HOPEFULLY FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE.
IT REMAINS THAT WAY, PARTICULARLY WITH VERY PRECISE FIGURES.
YEAH, THAT THAT THAT WASN'T IT.
SO OBVIOUSLY, I KNOW YOU'RE YOU'RE GOING TO DO YOUR PORTION AND, AND ADDRESS THOSE DURING YOUR COMMENTS, BUT SINCE WE HAVE A FULL ROOM, I WANTED YOU TO MAKE SURE THE ALL OF US HEAR THE SAME THING, BECAUSE I KNOW THAT WHEN WE ARE TALKING ABOUT BUDGET DIFFICULTIES A LOT OF SPECULATION TAKES PLACE.
AND AS AND TO CLOSE, IF I HAVE ANY TIME YOU HEAR SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T QUITE MAKE SENSE, BRING IT FORWARD SO WE CAN ADDRESS IT AND HAVE AN OPEN CONVERSATION.
WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO BE VERY TRANSPARENT WITH HOW THE STATE BUDGET IS SHAPING UP.
AND YOU WILL SEE ANOTHER PRESENTATION TODAY.
BUT AGAIN, AS WE REPEATED IN MULTIPLE LOCATIONS WE ARE PLANNING WITH THE FOCUS OF MAKING SURE THAT A STUDENT FROM SERVICES ARE NOT INTERRUPTED EVEN IN THE EVENT OF A SIGNIFICANT SHORTFALL ON CAMPUS.
AND THE LAST PART OF Y WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT TO CUT.
EMBEDDED TUTORING ARE THE PEOPLE SITTING HERE ON THIS TABLE? THAT IS SOMETHING THAT THE BOARD ADVOCATED A LOT FOR MANY YEARS UNTIL THE PROGRAM TOOK OFF.
[00:10:10]
WELL. AND THAT CONCLUDES MY COMMENTS.YOU BAD FOR YOUR JOB SECURITY.
I KNOW RIGHT. THANK YOU DOCTOR FIERRO.
SO THE NEXT ITEM IS 1.04 COMMENTS FROM THE AUDIENCE.
[1.04 Comments from the Audience]
WE DO HAVE TWO TOPICS.AND THE RULES ARE FIVE MINUTES PER SPEAKER, 20 MINUTES PER TOPIC.
THE FIRST TOPIC IS THE CERRITOS COLLEGE EMBEDDED TUTORS.
JUST SO YOU KNOW, THERE ARE 11 COMMON CARDS, BUT THE TOTAL AMOUNT IS 20 MINUTES.
SO I WILL TAKE THE CARDS THAT WERE SUBMITTED FIRST.
AND IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PASS PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
SO THE FIRST SPEAKER CARD IS JOSE HERNANDEZ, OCC VP I WOULD LIKE TO PASS.
SHOULD I COME UP? YES, PLEASE.
WHEN YOU GET TO THE. WHEN YOU GET.
WHEN YOU GET TO THE MIC, THERE IS A LITTLE BUTTON.
YEAH, I JUST HEARD PRESIDENT FIERRO'S COMMENTS ON THE NOT CUTTING STUDENT OR EMBEDDED STUDENT TUTORING. AND I APPRECIATE THAT SENTIMENT.
BUT I THINK IT WOULD BE ALSO USEFUL FOR YOU GUYS TO SHARE.
AND I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT IT'S BEEN A GREAT HELP TO HAVE EMBEDDED TA'S IN THE CLASS, ESPECIALLY DURING MOMENTS LIKE WHEN THE CLASS SPLITS UP INTO GROUPS AND WORKS BY THEMSELVES IN PROJECTS, IT'S EXTREMELY HELPFUL TO HAVE TOS BE ABLE TO COME AROUND AS WELL AS THE PROFESSOR SPLITTING UP THEIR EFFORTS AND MAKES MUCH BETTER USE OF OUR TIME.
I FEEL PERSONALLY AS THOUGH I'VE BEEN ABLE TO GAIN IMPORTANT SKILLS IN WRITING.
DUE TO THE EMBEDDED TUTORS IN MY CLASS.
AND I URGE YOU GUYS IF THERE IS ANY CONVERSATION OF CUTTING EMBEDDED TUTORING THAT COMES UP FOR US TO REJECT IT. AND I APPRECIATE THE WORK YOU'VE DONE HERE.
DELVIN. NEXT SPEAKER IS DOCTORS SUNDAY.
GOOD EVENING. GOOD EVENING EVERYONE.
AS DOCTOR FIERRO SAID, WE HEARD SOMETHING, AND SO WE HAD TO TAKE ACTION.
SO THAT'S HOW MUCH WE CARE ABOUT OUR STUDENTS.
AND SO WE JUST WANT TO SAY, PLEASE, IF THERE'S ANY TALK ABOUT CUTTING THE FUNDING FOR IT, WE ARE NOT SAYING YOU ARE CUTTING THE WHOLE PROGRAM IS THE FUNDING FOR IT. AND SO IF THERE IS A SQUEEZE GOING ON, PLEASE TRY TO MAKE SURE THAT IT DOES NOT AFFECT EMBEDDED TUTOR PROGRAM.
AS YOU ALREADY KNOW. THEY WILL HELP US TO MEET OUR 55.
ALL RIGHT. THEY WILL HELP US TO GRADUATE OUR STUDENTS EARLY.
AND IT ALSO BUILDS COMMUNITY AND BETTER TUTOR BUILDS COMMUNITY.
SOMEBODY IS PROBABLY GOING TO BE ABLE TO SPEAK ABOUT ONLINE EMBEDDED TUTORING WHEN, WHEN WHEN STUDENTS COME BACK FROM WORK AT ALL HOURS AND ORDINARILY OTHER DAYS OTHER THAN THE WEEKDAYS, DURING WEEKENDS FACULTY IS NOT THERE TO MEET WITH, WITH STUDENTS, BUT EMBEDDED TUTORS ARE THERE TO DO THOSE KIND OF THINGS.
AND SO WE ARE APPEALING TO YOU TO HAVE THAT AT THE FOREFRONT OF YOUR PRIORITY LIST, THAT THE FUNDING FOR EMBEDDED TUTORS WILL NOT BE CUT AS IT IS NOW. IF IT REMAINS WHERE IT IS NOW, THAT WILL BE OKAY.
SO WE CAN WE CAN HAVE THE MAYBE MORE SESSION OF EMBEDDED TUTORING NEXT TIME.
THANK YOU. NEXT SPEAKER, DANTE GARFIELD.
ALL RIGHT, WELL, BOARD, IT IS GOOD TO HEAR THAT THOSE BUDGET CUTS ARE FAKE NEWS BECAUSE WE DON'T LIKE FAKE NEWS, DO WE? WELL, LONG STORY SHORT, AS A FORMER EMBEDDED TUTOR MYSELF, I KNOW THE IMPORTANCE.
[00:15:03]
AND EMBEDDED TUTORS IS A BIG STUDENT NEED.WHY? BECAUSE SOMETIMES IT'S INTIMIDATING TO GO TO A FACULTY AND SAY YOU NEED HELP.
I KNOW MANY TIMES I'VE GONE TO A PROFESSOR AND I.
I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY, BUT SEEING A STUDENT IN THAT AND I DON'T SAY POWER, BUT SEEING A STUDENT IN THAT POSITION ALLOWS ME TO BE IN AN ENVIRONMENT THAT'S APPROACHABLE BUT ALSO FRIENDLY FOR THE STUDENTS.
AND I'M GLAD TO KNOW THAT THOSE BUDGET CUTS ARE FAKE NEWS.
MY NAME IS DOCTOR JACK RONQUILLO.
I'M THE CHAIR OF THE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT, AND I HAVE WITH ME MY EMBEDDED TUTOR, BELLA ROJAS.
SO WHEN WE HEARD ABOUT THE BUDGET CUTS, OF COURSE, WE GOT A LITTLE RUFFLED.
BUT GLAD TO HEAR THAT WE HAVE YOUR SUPPORT STILL.
I THINK IT'S JUST SUCH A GREAT PROGRAM FOR OUR STUDENTS.
AND I TEACH PSYCH 210, WHICH IS OUR TRANSFER LEVEL PSYCHOLOGY MATH COURSE.
AND, YOU KNOW, THAT COURSE HAS REALLY SHOWN SUCCESS.
AND I THINK THAT IN LARGE PART IT IS DUE TO OUR EMBEDDED TUTORS THAT ASSIST US IN THE CLASS.
I BROUGHT ONE WITH ME TO SHARE HER EXPERIENCE.
SO THIS IS BELLA ROJAS, WHO ACTUALLY WAS FEATURED IN THIS WEEK'S CAMPUS CONNECTION AS WELL.
I'M PROVIDING A PUBLIC COMMENT TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE AS AN EMBEDDED TUTOR.
AND THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE EMBEDDED TUTOR PROGRAM.
AS A TUTOR, I'VE HOSTED REVIEW SESSIONS, GIVEN LECTURES TO STUDENTS WHO MISSED CLASS, HELPED WITH NUMEROUS PAPERS, AND PROVIDED ONE ON ONE ASSISTANCE TO ALL THE ALL THE STUDENTS IN THE CLASSES I TUTOR.
JOB IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH ENOUGH CONFIDENCE TO TACKLE QUESTIONS AND CHALLENGES ON THEIR OWN.
WE PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE FOUNDATION THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE FOR FUTURE CLASSES.
AND THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR SUPPORTING THE EMBEDDED TUTOR PROGRAM.
NEXT SPEAKER, DOCTOR SOLOMON NAMALA.
IF YOU DON'T MIND, I'LL JUST SAY A FEW, FEW WORDS, AND THEN I WANT TO YIELD MY TIME.
THEY HAVE. THESE ARE MY FORMER EMBEDDED TUTORS WHO TOOK TIME TO COME FROM THEIR FARAWAY PLACES.
I'LL JUST SAY A FEW THINGS, AND THEN MAYBE THEY CAN SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCE.
LIKE, LIKE MANY OF MY COLLEAGUES HAVE ALREADY SAID THIS IS ACTUALLY A VERY IMPORTANT PROGRAM.
I HAVE BEEN USING EMBEDDED TUTORS FOR ABOUT TEN YEARS, I THINK, AND IN MANY WAYS IT HAS ALSO MADE ME A BETTER TEACHER BECAUSE MANY OF MY STUDENTS WOULD NOT HAVE PASSED MY CLASS.
I'VE BEEN TEACHING HERE FOR 25 YEARS.
WOULD NOT PASS MY CLASSES WITHOUT THE HELP OF THE EMBEDDED TUTORS AND YOU KNOW, IN THE CLASSROOM, SOMETIMES I OBSERVE THEM TALKING TO OTHERS, AND, AND I, I THINK SOMETIMES I PICK UP.
OKAY, MAYBE THIS IS HOW OTHER STUDENTS YOU KNOW, THEY CAN RELATE TO THEM.
AND I SAY, OKAY, MAYBE THIS IS HOW I SHOULD EXPLAIN.
SO IT HAS ACTUALLY HELPED ME AS A TEACHER TO MORE THAN THAT.
I THINK I HAVE SEEN MY FORMER EMBEDDED TUTORS GROW, GROW AS PERSONS NOT JUST IN THE DISCIPLINE, BUT AS HUMAN BEINGS GAIN, GAIN CONFIDENCE AND THEN PERFORM WELL IN THE WORLD OUTSIDE.
HYAH! WHO IS JUST GRADUATING FROM USC? AND SHE WON THE JACK.
AND IT WAS A FULL RIDE FOR USC.
SHE'LL SHE'LL TALK ABOUT HER EXPERIENCE.
AND DOMINIC, WHO WAS AT CAL STATE LONG BEACH, AN ECON MAJOR JUST FINISHING UP.
I THINK BOTH OF THEM ARE FINISHING.
I FEEL SO HAPPY TO BE BACK AT CERRITOS COLLEGE.
I TRANSFERRED FROM CERRITOS COLLEGE IN 2021 WITH A FULL RIDE SCHOLARSHIP, AND I WON THE JACK KENT COOKE WHERE WERE 1400 APPLICANTS, AND I WAS ONE OF 72 STUDENTS WHO GOT IT.
AND I HAVE NOW A FULL TIME JOB OFFER WITH ONE OF THE BIG FOUR ACCOUNTING FIRMS. AND IF YOU ASK ME, WHAT WAS THE MAIN REASON FOR YOUR YOUR SUCCESS AS IMMIGRANT? WHEN I WAS A CERRITOS COLLEGE, I DID NOT SPEAK ENGLISH WELL I AM A FIRST GEN STUDENT.
[00:20:02]
I WOULD TELL YOU THAT THE RESOURCES THAT I GOT AT CERRITOS COLLEGE AND THE ONE, THE BIGGEST ONE OF THEM WAS THE EMBEDDED TUTOR THAT I GOT IN ALL MY CLASSES.GOING TO THE CLASS AND BEING ABLE TO TALK TO THE STUDENTS AFTER CLASS AND ASKING THEM TO THE TUTORS AND ASKING THEM AND HELP ME IN THEIR LIKE IN THEIR, MY OWN WAY, IT HELPED ME A LOT TO BE LIKE, TRANSPARENT AND SHARE WITH THEM WHAT I'M REALLY STRUGGLING ABOUT.
NOT LIKE BE INTIMATED FROM MY PROFESSOR.
SO THAT WAS THE FIRST EMOTIONAL SUPPORT THAT I GOT FROM THE THE TUTORS.
AND ALSO LIKE IT WAS LIKE ECONOMICS STUDYING ECONOMICS WAS COMPLICATED AND UNDERSTANDING THE ENGLISH TERMS AND THE MATHEMATIC LIKE ALL THESE STUFF. SO LIKE THAT WAS REALLY LIKE MY MAIN MY MAIN RESOURCE AND THAT WHAT HELPED ME TO GET A GOOD GRADES IN MY CLASSES.
SO WITHOUT THESE RESOURCES, I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE HERE TODAY.
AND JUST LAST THING A RECENT RESEARCH IN 2021 SHOWED THAT 80% OF THE STUDENT COMMUNITY COLLEGE, WHEN YOU ASK THEM, ARE, ARE YOU LIKE, DO YOU WANT DO YOU HAVE INTEREST OF TRANSFERRING TO A FOUR YEAR COLLEGE? THEY WOULD SAY YES.
AND ONLY 10% ACTUALLY TRANSFER AND MADE IT THROUGH FOUR YEAR UNIVERSITIES.
I'M AN EMBEDDED TUTOR WITH NAMALA.
I WOULD JUST HAVE A TWO QUOTES.
ONE IS WE STAND ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS.
SO SOME OF THE TUTORS THAT TUTORED ME.
ALIYA. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF A PROFESSOR THERESA, FROM THE ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT.
SHE WAS ONE PERSON THAT TUTORED A MAN NAMED CARLOS WHO TUTORED ME.
SO I STAND ON ON THEIR SHOULDERS, RIGHT? BECAUSE THEY TUTORED ME.
AND THEN THE NEXT QUOTE I WOULD SAY IS WE GOT TO KEEP THE PASS THE BATON.
RIGHT. SO I WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY FROM PROFESSOR NAMALA TO BECOME A EMBEDDED TUTOR, WHICH I'M VERY GRATEFUL FOR, AND I WAS ABLE TO TUTOR A PERSON NAMED DAVID KOH, WHO IS NOW AT BERKELEY.
HE IS I PROBABLY, YOU KNOW, WAS ONE OF HIS EMBEDDED TUTORS.
SO I'M HAPPY TO SAY THAT PROUDLY.
AND THEN HE WENT ON TO BECOME AN EMBEDDED TUTOR HIMSELF, AND HE TUTORED A MAN NAMED THOMAS.
I BELIEVE HE'S AN EMBEDDED TUTOR NOW.
THANK YOU GUYS. THANK YOU ANDRE.
CAN WE GET A TIME CHECK? WE HAVE TEN MORE MINUTES.
CHABOT. GOOD EVENING, DOCTOR FIERRO AND THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
MY NAME IS SAM CHABOT AND I'M AN OLDER RETURNING DISABLED STUDENT.
AND I PERSONALLY HAVE BENEFITED FROM THE EMBEDDED TUTORS.
AND WE NEED TO KEEP THE FUNDING FOR STUDENT SERVICES SUCH AS ESPECIALLY THE EMBEDDED TUTOR PROGRAM.
SO WE'RE ABLE TO HAVE A PLACE TO GO TO AND WE NEED HELP.
PLEASE DON'T CUT THE EMBEDDED TUTORS.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND LISTENING.
NEXT SPEAKER, CRISTIAN ALFARO.
[00:25:01]
ALL RIGHT. GOOD EVENING, BOARD OF TRUSTEES.I AM THE DIRECTOR OF VETERANS AFFAIRS AND THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF CERRITOS COLLEGE.
THIS IS MY THIRD SEMESTER BACK AT CERRITOS.
AND THE KEY WORD THERE IS BACK.
I ACTUALLY DID ATTEND CERRITOS BACK IN 2015 OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL.
I ENDED UP DROPPING ALL MY CLASSES, OR AT LEAST NOT SHOWING UP BECAUSE I WAS INTIMIDATED.
I FELT LIKE I COULDN'T DO THESE CLASSES.
I JUST FELT LIKE I COULDN'T TALK TO THE PROFESSORS, AND I FELT ALONE.
AND I FELT AS IF WHERE I FEEL CURRENTLY.
AS IF IF I KNEW THERE WAS AN EMBEDDED TUTOR OR IF THERE WAS AN EMBEDDED TUTOR, I WOULD FEEL LIKE I WOULD HAVE SOMEONE TO HELP ME AND THAT WOULDN'T FEEL INTIMIDATED, BECAUSE A LOT OF THESE KIDS TODAY, I'VE SEEN IT IN MY CLASSES, AT LEAST THEY'RE 18, THEY'RE FRESH OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL, AND IT'S INTIMIDATING TO SPEAK TO A PERSON IN A POSITION OF POWER.
AND I'VE ONLY HAD ABOUT TWO CLASSES WITH EMBEDDED TUTORS, AND I'VE SEEN A DRAMATIC DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THOSE CLASSES AND THE ONES THAT DON'T IN TERMS OF THE STUDENTS THAT DROP THE CLASSES AND BOTH CLASSES THAT I DID HAVE EMBEDDED TUTORS IN THOSE CLASSES, THEY PRETTY MUCH STAYED AT THE AMOUNT THAT WAS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER. WHEREAS THE OTHER ONES THERE'S I'VE SEEN KIDS DROP CLASSES, JUST NOT TRY OR NOT NOT SPEAK TO PROFESSORS.
WITH THAT BEING SAID, I FEEL LIKE THIS IS NOT SCARY.
THIS IS NOT A PROGRAM THAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR BUDGET CUTS.
THIS IS NOT A PROGRAM THAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR BUDGET CUTS.
I BELIEVE IT IS A PROGRAM THAT SHOULD BE EXPANDED.
I THINK THAT IT PROVIDES SO MANY BENEFITS TO YOUNG KIDS.
AND THAT'S ALL THAT I HAVE TO SAY.
THANK YOU. AND WE HAVE ONE MORE ON THIS TOPIC, BRIAN MORA.
HELLO EVERYONE. THANK YOU GUYS FOR BEING HERE AND GIVING US YOUR ATTENTION.
MY NAME IS BRIAN MORRIS SOLIS.
I'M A THIRD SEMESTER STUDENT HERE AT CERRITOS COLLEGE.
WHEN I FIRST HEARD ABOUT THIS UNCERTAINTY THAT WAS GOING ON WITH THE TUTORS, I WAS REALLY FRIGHTENED BECAUSE BEING AN EMBEDDED TUTOR IS SOMETHING I REALLY AM STRIVING FOR FORWARDS TO. WHEN I FIRST HEARD ABOUT BEING A TUTOR, IT WAS A PROFESSIONAL CLASS AND MACROECONOMICS.
I WILL HELP STUDENTS IN MY FRONT ROW.
THIS IS JUST A GREAT RESOURCE TO REALLY HELP THEM IN THEIR ACADEMIC ENDEAVORS.
PERSONALLY, I LOVE TO HELP PEOPLE.
IT'S ONE OF MY GOALS AND BEING A TUTOR DEFINITELY FALLS IN LINE WITH THAT.
I WOULD LIKE TO BE A TUTOR WITHIN THE NEXT YEAR, EITHER FOR ECONOMICS OR ACCOUNTING, AND THAT'S SOMETHING I REALLY HOPE THAT YOU GUYS CAN HELP ME SUPPORT IN MYSELF, IN MY ASPIRATIONS OF BEING A TUTOR HERE.
BUT THANK YOU GUYS FOR LISTENING TO ME AND I HOPE TO HEAR GREAT NEWS REGARDING THIS MOVING FORWARD.
SO THE OTHER TOPIC WE HAVE IS ONLINE TUTORING.
THE FIRST PERSON IS ANDRE, HOW DO YOU SAY YOUR LAST NAME? NO NO NO NO NO, SORRY.
I WANT TO SAY IT RIGHT. PLEASE CORRECT ME.
I'M HERE TO SPEAK ON ONLINE TUTORING.
PART OF IT WAS EMBEDDED TUTORING AS WELL, BUT I SINCE WE'VE ESTABLISHED THE FACTS FOR EMBEDDED TUTORING, I'LL TALK ON THE ASPECTS OF ONLINE TUTORING. AND GIVEN THAT WE HAVE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE GIVEN ANECDOTES OF THE PROCESS, I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE THE MORE RESEARCH FOCUSED APTITUDE OF ONLINE TUTORING AND WHY THE CURRENT FORMAT OF ONLINE TUTORING AND HAVING IT ALLOWING BOTH TUTORS AND STUDENTS TO BE ONLINE IS BENEFICIAL TO CERRITOS COLLEGE, THE UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG.
WINNIPEG IN CANADA HAS DONE A RESEARCH DURING SORRY AFTER THE PANDEMIC SPECIFICALLY TARGETED ON HOW
[00:30:04]
EFFECTIVE HOW EFFECTIVE ZOOM MEETINGS AND ONLINE TUTORING WERE POST COVID 19, AND WHAT STUDENTS GOT BENEFITED AND WHAT WERE THE DRAWBACKS. AND SO ONE OF THE ASPECTS OF THIS RESEARCH TOPIC WAS THE IDEA THAT WHEN THESE ZOOM MEETINGS WERE CONDUCTED, STUDENTS DID BENEFIT. THAT WAS AN ESTABLISHED FACT.JUST LIKE TUTORING AND EMBEDDED TUTORING, THERE IS THAT HUMAN CONNECTION.
HOWEVER, IT IS ARGUABLE THAT THIS CONNECTION IS PERHAPS LESSENED BECAUSE OF THE ONLINE PRESENCE.
I HAVE HEARD RUMORS, BUT IT PERCHANCE COULD BE FAKE NEWS.
AS DOCTOR FIERRO HAS SAID BEFORE THAT THE ONLINE FORMAT MIGHT BE CHANGED SO THAT EMBEDDED TUTORS AND TUTORING IN GENERAL MIGHT HAVE TO ATTEND HERE AT CERRITOS COLLEGE, AT THE SUCCESS CENTER WHILE WE PERFORM OUR ONLINE ON ONLINE TUTORING. I IN THE PURPOSE OF JOB SECURITY, I WOULD LIKE TO ADVISE AGAINST BRINGING TUTORING TO THE SCHOOL FOR THAT ONLINE FORMAT, BECAUSE THAT ONLINE FORMAT NOT ONLY HELPS STUDENTS WHO ARE ADULTS WHO ARE TAKING OTHER JOBS WHO HAVE KIDS OR WHATNOT, BUT IT ALSO HELPS TUTORS AS WELL, WHO MIGHT BE IN THE SAME POSITION.
AND I AM AND I ASSUME FROM WHAT I'VE READ ON YOUR PROFILES ON CERRITOS COLLEGE MANY OF YOU HAVE BACKGROUNDS IN ECONOMICS OR EDUCATION AND YOU MIGHT, MIGHT PREFER TO READ THE RESEARCH YOURSELF, WHICH I WOULD BE HAPPILY HAPPY TO PROVIDE IF THE IF IT WOULD PLEASE THE BOARD.
AND AS AN EMBEDDED TUTOR AND AS AN ONLINE TUTOR, I BELIEVE THAT THE CURRENT FORMAT FOR ONLINE TUTORING AND HAVING IT STAY ONLINE AND ALLOWING PEOPLE TO CONDUCT THEIR OFFICE HOURS, TUTORING HOURS ONLINE WOULD STILL BENEFIT CERRITOS COLLEGE IN THE GREATEST WAY POSSIBLE.
I AM A THIRD SEMESTER STUDENT OF THE NURSING PROGRAM HERE.
WE HAVE FIRST SEMESTER STUDENTS HAVING CLINICALS PRETTY MUCH EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK.
WE HAVE MY OWN SCHEDULE TO TAKE CARE OF.
SO BECAUSE OF THAT, A LOT OF MY SESSIONS END UP GOING REALLY LATE INTO THE NIGHT.
SOMETIMES I END AT TEN, SOMETIMES EVEN LATER, AND I UNDERSTAND THAT IF WE WERE TO GET RID OF THE ONLINE TUTORING FORMAT, THAT I WOULD HAVE TO COME ONTO CAMPUS TO PERFORM THESE SESSIONS.
SO I FEEL THAT A LOT OF THE STUDENTS WOULD BE MISSING OUT ON A LOT OF EXTRA TIME AND A LOT OF EXTRA HELP THAT I COULD BE PROVIDING AS LONG AS WELL AS THE OTHER EMBEDDED TUTORS IN THIS PROGRAM.
THANK YOU. NEXT PERSON IS DIEGO ARIETTA.
AND SIMILAR TO WHAT SHE WAS TALKING ABOUT, WE HAVE NURSING IS A VERY COMPETITIVE FIELD.
AND THEY COME FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF CALIFORNIA.
THEY DRIVE HOURS SOMETIMES TO GET HERE.
SO FOR SOME OF US THAT DO WORK AS ONLINE TUTORS, IT'S A REALLY HELPFUL TO BE ABLE TO DO THINGS OVER ZOOM TO WORK WITH STUDENTS OVER ZOOM.
BECAUSE IF WE WERE TO HAVE TO GO IN PERSON IT WOULD REALLY JUST TAKE AWAY A LOT OF THE AVAILABILITY BECAUSE WE ARE HAVING TO GO TO THE HOSPITALS TO DO OUR WORK, AND THE STUDENTS ARE ALSO KIND OF DOING THAT AS WELL.
EVEN RIGHT NOW AS, AS, AS WE'RE TUTORING THE, LIKE THE FIRST SEMESTER STUDENTS, PEOPLE STARTING OUT WE TYPICALLY HAVE MAYBE LIKE 1 OR 2 DAYS OR THROUGHOUT THE WEEK WHERE THEY'RE NOT THEIR SCHEDULE ISN'T PACKED.
SO SOME OF THE STUDENTS COME HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL DURING THEIR WORK BY LIKE 6 P.M.
OR SO, WHICH IS WHY WE DO SESSIONS AS LATE AS SEVEN.
[00:35:07]
AND LIKE I SAID, IT'S A VERY COMPETITIVE PROGRAM.SO THESE ARE THE KIND OF, ESPECIALLY THE KIND OF STUDENTS THAT NEED TUTORING HELP.
SO, LIKE, IN A COHORT OF ABOUT 45 PEOPLE, WE GET UP TO LIKE 30 SOMETHING STUDENTS COMING INTO THE SESSIONS TUNING IN TO GET HELP WITH LECTURE, BUT ALSO HELP EVEN JUST KIND OF WORK YOUR WAY THROUGH THE HOSPITAL MATERIAL.
AND WE HEARD FEEDBACK SAYING THAT, NO, IT'S REALLY HELPFUL TO GET THAT STUDENT PERSPECTIVE BECAUSE A LOT OF THE TEACHERS THAT ARE THERE HAVE BEEN NURSES FOR DECADES AT THAT AT THAT POINT.
AND SOMETIMES, YOU KNOW, YOU FORGET WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE A STUDENT.
SO WE ARE TOLD THAT THEY APPRECIATE THAT.
SO I THINK IT'S JUST VERY HELPFUL TO MAINTAIN OUR ABILITY TO DO SO ONLINE TO MAINTAIN THAT AVAILABILITY SO WE CAN PROVIDE THAT TUTORING FOR THE STUDENTS.
YEAH. THAT'S EVERYTHING. THANK YOU.
WE HAVE ONE MORE COMMENT CARD, RYAN BUCKLEY.
I'VE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF ONLINE TUTORING AT THE, AT THE, AT CERRITOS.
AND I'VE ALSO BEEN AN EMBEDDED TUTOR ALL ALWAYS ONLINE.
I'VE TUTORED FOR PHILOSOPHY AND PHYSIOLOGY.
I ALMOST STOPPED COMING TO SCHOOL.
AND WHAT I WOULD SAY IS THAT EVERYTHING THAT EVERYONE ELSE HAS SAID IS TRUE.
BEING AN EMBEDDED TUTOR WHO WORKS ONLINE IS INCREDIBLY VALUABLE FOR MANY STUDENTS.
A LOT OF STUDENTS ARE WORKING.
A LOT OF STUDENTS HAVE A OF A PACKED CLASS SCHEDULE THEY JUST CAN'T COME TO TO.
THEY EITHER CAN'T COME TO CAMPUS OR THEY CAN'T ATTEND TUTORING DURING NORMAL SUCCESS CENTER HOURS.
IT IT'S IT'S HARD TO OVERSTATE.
LIKE, FOR EXAMPLE, I ONLY TUTOR IN THE EVENINGS AND I ALWAYS HAVE PEOPLE COMING IN.
RIGHT? SO I TUTOR 8 TO 10, FOUR DAYS A WEEK.
AND I ALWAYS HAVE PEOPLE COMING IN WHEN I TUTOR FOR PHYSIOLOGY.
THE OTHER THING I WANT TO SAY IS THAT IF WE MAKE A POLICY CHANGE TO WHERE TUTORS HAVE TO BE ON CAMPUS DURING SUCCESS CENTER HOURS IN ORDER TO TUTOR ONLINE, THERE ARE A LOT OF TUTORS THAT ARE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE THAT, AND WE'RE GOING TO LOSE A LOT OF GOOD PEOPLE.
I'VE HAD MORE THAN A FEW TUTORS CONTACT ME ALREADY LEARNING ABOUT THIS POLICY, POLICY CHANGE, SAYING THAT THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO STAY EMPLOYED AT THE COLLEGE BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BE ON CAMPUS DURING THOSE TIMES.
THESE ARE PEOPLE THAT ARE DEALING WITH HEALTH ISSUES THAT STOP THEM FROM COMING IN.
THEY'VE GOT FAMILIES TO TAKE CARE OF.
PEOPLE THAT ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN STUDENT LIVES RIGHT NOW.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THANK YOU.
SO EVERYONE SPOKE WHO TURNED IN A COMMENT CARD? I'D LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE WHO CAME FROM STUDENTS, ALUMNI, PROFESSORS AND THE TUTORS THEMSELVES THAT CAME IN AND REALLY EXPRESSED THE VALUABLE YOU KNOW, NATURE OF, OF THIS EMBEDDED TUTORING, ONLINE TUTORING.
WE HEAR YOU. WE THANK YOU FOR COMING.
AND I THINK THAT REFLECTS IN OUR 7668 DEGREES THAT WILL BE AWARDED THIS YEAR.
SO I THANK YOU ALL FOR COMING.
AND WE HAVE SO WE'LL MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ITEM, 1.05 REPORTS AND COMMENTS FROM CONSTITUENT GROUPS.
[1.05 Reports and Comments from Constituent Groups]
AND WE'LL START WITH DOCTOR LYNN WING, CCF PRESIDENT.THANK YOU EVERYONE, AND THANK YOU TO THE STUDENTS, ALUMNI AND FACULTY WHO CAME OUT TO SUPPORT.
JUST TO SAY BOARD ACTIONS ACTUALLY WORK.
PROFESSOR HECKMAN'S DEDICATION TO HIS STUDENT SUCCESS IS COMMENDABLE.
ACROSS CAMPUS, NUMEROUS OTHER FACULTY SHARE THE SAME DEDICATION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS.
IN THE INTEREST OF TIME, I'LL SHARE A FEW EXAMPLES ON HOW FACULTY ARE DIRECTLY CONTRIBUTING TO SUCCESS AND THE WELL-BEING OF OUR STUDENTS. COACH KIRK AND DOCTOR RONQUILLO, YOU HAVE YOUR OWN AGENDA ITEMS, SO I'M GOING TO SKIP YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS, BUT
[00:40:05]
I KNOW YOU'VE DONE A GREAT JOB.THIS TRANSPARENCY ENABLED THE DEVELOPMENT OF IMPACTFUL INTERVENTIONS, SUCH AS TARGETED OUTREACH TO STUDENTS NEEDING SUPPORT IN CORE SUBJECTS SUCH AS MATH AND ENGLISH.
ACADEMIC FACULTY ALSO SERVED AS GENERAL FACULTY REPRESENTATIVES ON THE LCP TEAM.
THEY SPEARHEADED EFFORTS TO PROMOTE AND INCREASE STUDENT AND FACULTY PARTICIPATION IN CAMPUS EVENTS.
A PRIME EXAMPLE IS OUR HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL FRIDAY FRIENDLY FACULTY SUCCESS TIPS SERIES.
PRONTO IS A MESSAGE MESSAGING APP PLATFORM WHICH FOSTER A CULTURE OF PEER LEARNING AND SUPPORT.
THIS RESULTED IN A RECORD NUMBER OF COMPLETED COMPREHENSIVE STUDENT EDUCATION PLANS.
ADDITIONALLY, THESE FACULTY MEMBERS CONSISTENTLY WENT THE EXTRA MILE WITH PERSONALIZED SUPPORT, DEMONSTRATING A DEEP COMMITMENT TO STUDENT WELL-BEING. LASTLY, THE COMBINED EFFORTS OF FACULTY AND THE LCP TEAM FOSTER A STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY, ENSURING STUDENTS FELT SUPPORTED AND CONNECTED.
THEIR LEADERSHIP IS CENTRAL TO OUR COLLEGE CONTINUOUS SUCCESS IN STUDENT DEVELOPMENT.
IN ADDITION TO GUIDED PATHWAYS, OUR AMSA PROGRAM, WHICH STANDS FOR MATHEMATICS, ENGINEERING, SCIENCE AND ACHIEVEMENT, IS THE NEW ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS WORKING TOWARDS CALCULUS BASED SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH DEGREES.
FACULTY PARTNERED AND COLLABORATED WITH THE MESA PROGRAM TO PROMOTE AND RECRUIT AND PROVIDE INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPERIENTIAL EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES SUCH AS THE NASA COMMUNITY COLLEGE AEROSPACE SCHOLARS PROGRAM.
BEACH. THE WOMEN IN ENGINEERING CONFERENCE AT CAL STATE LONG BEACH AND THE BE STELLAR PROGRAM, AN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM WITH THE COLUMBIA MEMORIAL CENTER IN DOWNEY AND THE CAL STATE LA BATTERIE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE.
LASTLY, FACULTY LED ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WORKSHOPS, WHERE A COMMUNITY OF STUDENTS WORK COLLABORATIVELY TO MASTER COURSE MATERIALS WITH THE GUIDANCE OF A FACILITATOR, AND IN THESE WORKSHOPS, PROFESSOR AGUILAR BAPTISTA AND PROFESSOR NGUYEN IN MATH, PROFESSOR BRADBURY IN CHEMISTRY WERE INSTRUMENTAL FOR THE INCEPTION OF SUCH PRACTICE.
FACULTY ALSO CONTINUE TO ENGAGE IN EQUITY WORK.
ONE OF THE EFFORTS, PROFESSOR ALVAREZ AND ENGLISH AND DOCTOR FISHER IN COUNSELING BROUGHT TO THE CAMPUS WITH THE WORK WAS THE WORK OF CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE PEDAGOGY AND PRACTICES, CRTP FOR SHORT, WHICH IS A YEAR LONG PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES TO IMPROVE LEARNING OUTCOMES THROUGH A DIA MINDED AND CULTURALLY COMPETENT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING FOR FACULTY.
PARTICIPANTS ENGAGE IN REGULAR CONVENINGS TO DISCUSS ISSUES RELATED TO RECOGNIZING STRUCTURAL RACISM AND BIASES, LEARN STRATEGIES FOR DECOLONIZING CURRICULUM AND CLASSROOM PRACTICES, AND DESIGN INTERVENTIONS TO CLOSE THE EQUITY GAPS IN THE CLASSROOM. LASTLY, FUN FACT THE STUDENT FIRST FRAMEWORK, WHICH IS ITEM 5.01 ON YOUR AGENDA TONIGHT, WHICH YOU WILL LATER CONSIDER FOR APPROVAL, WAS PENNED BY PROFESSOR CHAD GREEN IN THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT.
FINALLY, AS WE CLOSE THE YEAR AND CELEBRATE ONE OF OUR LARGEST GRADUATING CLASSES EVER IN ABOUT A WEEK, WHICH DOCTOR PIERRO I WASN'T, YOU KNOW, WE DIDN'T WE DIDN'T COLLUDE, RIGHT? I DIDN'T KNOW YOU WERE GOING TO PROVIDE A 7000 CERTIFICATE DATA.
I KNOW NOW, SEEMS LIKE WE WERE EXCHANGING NOTES, BUT I WASN'T.
[00:45:09]
WORK WE CONTINUE TO DO.WING, NEXT WE HAVE YOLANDA LOPEZ, CSC PRESIDENT.
GOOD EVENING, BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
TO OUR ADMINISTRATORS AND TO ALL OUR GUESTS HERE TONIGHT.
SO, ALAS, LET'S NOT FORGET CLASSIFIED STAFF IN THE HALL.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF CERRITOS COLLEGE AS WELL.
AND PART OF WHAT MAKES A 7000 IS PART OF OUR EVALUATORS ARE PART OF ADMISSIONS AND RECORDS.
THOSE AT LEAST GO THROUGH TRANSCRIPTS AND MAKE SURE THAT EVERYBODY IS AWARDED.
SO OUR CLASSIFIED STAFF ARE VERY HARD AT WORK IN THAT PART AS WELL.
WHAT YOU HEARD TODAY WAS PART OF EMBEDDED TUTORS, AND ONE OF THE PART THAT YOU HEARD WAS THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A COMMUNITY IN ORDER FOR YOU TO BE SUCCESSFUL.
THAT'S ALSO TRUE IN OUR CLASSIFIED RANKS.
WORKING IN SILOS DOESN'T MAKE US STRONGER.
WORKING TOGETHER AS A TEAM DOES.
THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR CLASSIFIED STAFF TO BE ABLE TO REACH OUT TO ONE ANOTHER, TO BE ABLE TO ASK FOR HELP, TO BE ABLE TO GET THESE PROCESSES DONE, ARE IMPORTANT FOR THE PRODUCTION OF WHAT CERRITOS COLLEGE DOES FROM TRAVELING CONFERENCE.
SOMEONE HAS TO DO THE ARRANGEMENTS FOR EVERYTHING.
EVERYTHING TIES TO ONE ANOTHER.
WE MUST BE COLLABORATIVE WITH ONE ANOTHER.
AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT YOU HEARD FROM THE STUDENTS WORKING AS EMBEDDED TUTORS.
THE SUPPORT THEY NEED FROM ONE ANOTHER CLASSIFIED ALSO NEED THAT AS WELL.
AND IT'S IMPORTANT THAT AS PART OF AN INSTITUTION, WE ENCOURAGE THAT COLLABORATION WITH ONE ANOTHER.
AND I THINK THAT ALLOWS US TO THRIVE, THAT ALLOWS US TO BE MUCH MORE SUCCESSFUL AS AN INSTITUTION.
IT IMPACTS MANAGEMENT AS WELL.
SO WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING HOLISTICALLY AT THAT POLICY AND LOOKING AT THE CHANGES YOU NEED TO MAKE FOR EMBEDDED TUTORS, I HOPE THAT YOU'RE TAKING CLASSIFIED STAFF INTO THAT CONVERSATION AS WELL, BECAUSE THOSE POLICIES WERE EVOLVED THROUGH A COLLECTIVE PROCESS IN THE SHARED GOVERNANCE CONVERSATIONS, THROUGH COORDINATING.
SO I HOPE THAT THAT'S PART OF THE CONVERSATION AS WELL.
DEPARTMENTS OFFER THOSE SERVICES AT DIFFERENT TIMES, AND THEY'RE OFFERED HERE ON CAMPUS.
WHEN WE'RE LOOKING AT THE SUCCESS OF OUR INSTITUTION, WE'RE LOOKING AT RETENTION OF OUR CLASSIFIED STAFF, OF OUR WHOLE CAMPUS COMMUNITY IN ITSELF.
MY JOB IS TO LOOK AT CLASSIFIED STAFF, WHICH IS WHY I FOCUS ON THEM HERE.
SO WHEN WE'RE LOOKING AT THAT COLLECTIVELY, I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE LOOK AT THE POLICIES WE SET IN PLACE AND THAT WE MAKE SURE WHEN WE'RE LOOKING AT THEM THAT THEY ALSO APPLY EQUITABLY TO THE STAFF.
WHAT? I JUST DREW A BLANK RIGHT NOW.
THEY DON'T GET A STIPEND FOR THAT.
RIGHT. SO SOME OF THEM ARE ABLE TO GRACIOUSLY ADJUST THEIR SCHEDULE SO THAT THEY CAN BE HERE DURING COMMENCEMENT TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS AND TO TAKE PART INTO THEIR SUCCESSES. I KNOW LYNN MENTIONED COUNSELORS AND THE FACULTY THAT ARE PART OF THE LCP'S PART OF THOSE LCP'S ALSO INCLUDE CLASSIFIED STAFF. CLASSIFIED STAFF THAT USE PART OF THEIR WORKLOAD TO SUPPORT THESE LCPS WITH THE COMMUNICATION SETTING UP THE COUNSELOR SCHEDULE.
SO SUCCESS COACHES ARE REALLY IMPORTANT, INTEGRAL AS PART OF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THOSE LSPS.
AND THAT'S PRETTY MUCH ALL I HAVE FOR YOU TODAY.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. HAVE A GOOD NIGHT.
WE'LL MOVE ON TO THE NEXT SESSION, WHICH IS OUR OPEN SESSION.
[2.01 Institutional Presentation: State Budget Update]
AGENDA ITEM 2.01 INSTITUTIONAL PRESENTATION, STATE BUDGET UPDATE.[00:50:12]
MUST HAVE GONE AWAY WITH THE FLAG.I WAS SO EXCITED BECAUSE FOR MONTHS I'VE BEEN TOLD WE NEEDED TO GET THIS IMPRESSIVE TECHNOLOGY.
WE GOT THE IMPRESSIVE TECHNOLOGY, AND I'M STILL USING THE OLD CLICKER.
I WILL GO THROUGH THIS AS FAST AS I CAN.
I KNOW WE HAVE ALL THE STATE CHAMPIONS HERE WAITING, AND I SEEN THEM PERFORM, SO I WILL KNOW WHEN I GET UNDERWAY AND KEEP THEM HERE TOO LATE BECAUSE THEY'RE INCREDIBLY IMPRESSIVE TO WATCH.
WE'LL WE'LL KEEP MOVING THE MEETING ALONG.
SO OBVIOUSLY, AS WE KNOW THERE'S SOME BUDGET CONVERSATIONS AND CONCERNS.
AND I AGAIN WANT TO SAY THAT AT NO POINT THE CONVERSATION WAS ABOUT CUTTING TUTORS. SO IT IS VERY UNFORTUNATE THAT ONE OF OUR TEAM MEMBERS DECIDED TO DISSEMINATE INFORMATION THAT WASN'T CONNECTED TO ANY OF THESE CONVERSATIONS.
NOW, A FEW THINGS HAVE CHANGED AT THIS STATE.
AND TODAY WE GOT FULL CONFIRMATION THAT WILL BE RELEASED ON FRIDAY AT AN 11 A.M..
THEY'RE GOING TO RELEASE THE BUDGET.
RELEASING THE BUDGET EARLY ACTUALLY ISN'T GOOD NEWS.
RELEASING THE BUDGET EARLY IS GIVING THE LEGISLATORS ADDITIONAL TIMES TO DO NEGOTIATIONS, BECAUSE THE REVENUES ARE COMING WAY BELOW EXPECTATIONS.
SO ESSENTIALLY WHAT THEY ARE DOING BY ACCELERATING THE TIMELINE OF THE RELEASE OF THE BUDGET IS GET A LITTLE BIT MORE BREATHING ROOM TO BEGIN THE NEGOTIATIONS OVER WHAT IT WILL BE THE FINAL BUDGET BY JUNE 15TH.
SO WHAT HAS CHANGED? SO THE REVENUES THAT WERE PROJECTED BY THE GOVERNOR IN THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR IN JANUARY PROJECTED AT 38.
AND AT THE SAME TIME, THE LAO PROJECTED 70 SOME BILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT.
WE WERE ROOTING VERY HARD FOR THE GOVERNOR BECAUSE WE LIKED THE GOVERNOR'S PROPOSAL.
EVEN THOUGH IT'S A DEFICIT PROPOSAL, WE LIKE THE GOVERNOR'S PROPOSAL.
HOWEVER, AS REVENUES ARE COLLECTED, MEANING AS INCOME TAXES ARE COLLECTED AND BUSINESS TAXES ARE COLLECTED AND SALES TAXES ARE COLLECTED, THE PICTURE OF THE BUDGET BEGAN TO CHANGE.
SO ESSENTIALLY WE ARE BEHIND ABOUT 6 TO $8 BILLION FROM THE $38 BILLION THE GOVERNOR PROJECTED, WHICH MEANS THAT WE'RE TRAILING BY ROUGHLY 44 TO $46 BILLION, MAKING THE SITUATION WORSE THAN IT WAS BEFORE.
AND OUT OF THAT MONEY, THAT'S HOW THEY COLLECT THEIR REVENUE.
SO WE ARE ABOUT 6 BILLION SHORT AS OF RIGHT NOW.
AND THAT IS COUNTING THE THE NUMBERS FROM APRIL.
SO AGAIN I MENTIONED THAT WE STARTED WITH THE JANUARY PROPOSAL AT 38 BILLION SHORTFALL.
TODAY WE'RE LOOKING AT ANYWHERE BETWEEN 44 TO 46 BILLION SHORTFALL.
NOW, THE LAO PROPOSAL THERE WAS MENTIONING $77 BILLION OR SOMEWHERE AROUND THERE.
WHY? WE'RE CLOSER TO THE END OF THE YEAR.
[00:55:02]
WE CLOSE THE GAP FROM WHERE WE ARE TODAY TO WHERE THE GOVERNOR PROJECTED DURING THE FALL SEMESTER, DURING THE DURING THE JANUARY BUDGET, WHICH MEANS THE EARLY RELEASE OF THE BUDGET COMES ATTACHED TO A NUMBER OF DISCUSSIONS AND NEGOTIATIONS THAT ARE GOING TO HAPPEN AT THE STATE LEVEL.SO ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS THAT HAPPENED A DAY OR TWO AGO, IS THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE FINALLY ISSUED A LETTER SAYING STOP SPENDING ANY ONE TIME DOLLARS AS PER THE EARLY BUDGET ACT THAT WAS SIGNED BY THE GOVERNOR. SO RIGHT NOW THEY ARE COLLECTING EVERY SINGLE ONE TIME DOLLAR THAT WAS LISTED BY THE GOVERNOR AND THE LEGISLATORS THAT WERE ALLOCATED IN 21, 22 AND 23.
THAT LETTER WAS ISSUED THAT ALREADY COLLECTING THOSE DOLLARS IS NO MORE SPENDING THAT INCLUDE US TO UP TO A POINT. BUT MOST STATE AGENCIES THAT WERE LISTED IN THAT PARTICULAR LETTER AND THAT IS EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.
BESIDES THAT, THERE IS A VERY BIG ISSUE THAT WE HAVE TO KEEP AN EYE ON.
YES, WE HAVE KNOWN THAT IT'S A DEFICIT.
YES, WE HAVE KNOWN THE TAXES ARE COMING LOW, WHICH IS A BIG PROBLEM.
BUT WE HAVE A BIGGER ISSUE THAT WE HAVE A CONCERN WITH AND THE BUDGET OF PROP 98.
THE GOVERNOR PROPOSED A SOLUTION TO BACKFILL A SHORTFALL OF $7.1 BILLION FROM THE 2223 BUDGET YEAR.
SO ESSENTIALLY MONEY THAT WE HAVE ALREADY RECEIVED AND THIS PROPOSAL, THE GOVERNOR SIMPLY SAID, WE'RE GOING TO WRITE IT OFF ON THE 2223, AND THEN WE'RE GOING TO ESSENTIALLY SELF LOAN THE MONEY AND PAY IT BACK TO THE GENERAL FUND OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS IN EQUAL PAYMENTS.
AND THAT'S HOW THEY WILL ESSENTIALLY BACKFILL DOLLARS THAT WE ALREADY SPENT.
THE SPLIT OF THAT MONEY FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGES IS ABOUT $910 MILLION.
YOU KNOW, THE PROP 98 IS COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND K-12.
SO OUT OF THE $7.1 BILLION, $910 MILLION IS THE SPLIT FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGES.
IF WE WERE GOING TO DO A ROUGH CALCULATION AND JUST SIMPLY DIVIDE BY 116, WHICH IS NOT HOW IT'S DONE, BUT JUST FOR THE EASE OF THE CONVERSATION, THAT WOULD BASICALLY MEAN THAT THE IMPACT TO CERRITOS COLLEGE COULD BE $7.8 MILLION.
I AM NOT SAYING THAT IS THE IMPACT.
I AM SAYING THAT IN THE EVENT THEY DON'T FIND A SOLUTION, THIS COULD POTENTIALLY HURT K-12 AND COMMUNITY COLLEGES IN A SIGNIFICANT MANNER BECAUSE THE MONEY HAS BEEN ALREADY RECEIVED AND SPENT.
THE PROBLEM WITH THE GOVERNOR'S PROPOSAL IN PROP 98 IS COMPLICATED.
THE FIRST ONE THE ASSEMBLY AND THE SENATE, ARE NOT QUITE SUPPORTIVE OF THE POSITION OF PROP 98.
THEY DON'T NECESSARILY THINK THAT IS A GOOD IDEA.
AND THREE AND THE ONE THAT SHOULD CONCERN US THE MOST IS WHAT YOU SEE RIGHT HERE.
WE ARE RIGHT HERE, WHICH HAD A SHORT FALL.
THEN YOU HAVE A DEFICIT IN 26, 27, 27, 28, WHICH MEANS THAT IF THEY WERE PLANNING TO TAKE MONEY OUT OF THE THREE OUTGOING YEARS TO COVER A DEFICIT OF $7.1 BILLION, THERE WAS NO MONEY TO COVER THAT BECAUSE THE DEFICITS ARE PROJECTED TO STAY WITH US FOR AT LEAST THREE YEARS. SO WHAT ARE WHAT ARE WE DOING? WE STARTED THIS YEAR BY LOOKING AT THE BUDGET FROM THE GET GO AND ADJUSTING OUR OUTLOOK FOR THIS YEAR AND THE OUTGOING YEARS, SO WE'RE GOING TO EXPECT DIFFICULT BUDGET YEARS THIS YEAR AND AT LEAST TWO, MAYBE THREE MORE AFTER THAT, BUT AT LEAST TWO MORE YEARS AFTER THIS ONE.
THE THE NEXT STEP AFTER FRIDAY IS THE ASSEMBLY.
THE SPEAKER OF THE ASSEMBLY, THE THE SENATE PRO TEM, AND THE GOVERNOR WILL DO CLOSED SESSION NEGOTIATIONS IN WHICH THEY ESSENTIALLY WORK A DEAL TO BE ABLE TO BALANCE THE BUDGET, FUND THE PRIORITIES.
[01:00:04]
THE PROBLEM WITH THIS IS THAT IF THE DEFICIT CONTINUES TO GROW, THEY ARE GOING TO NEED TO TAKE FURTHER ACTIONS BESIDES THE EARLY ACTION THAT THEY ALREADY TOOK.WHAT THAT BASICALLY MEANS IS THAT WE WILL HAVE TO LOOK AT PROP 98 EITHER ADJUSTMENTS, CUTS, WHETHER THEY ARE ONE TIME OR ONGOING DOLLARS.
AND REMEMBER PROP 98 IS WHERE WE GET THE BULK OF OUR FUNDING.
CUTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE PROPOSED DURING THOSE NEGOTIATIONS IN ORDER TO BALANCE THE BUDGET, PARTICULARLY IF THE REVENUES CONTINUE TO DECLINE.
THERE IS A LIST OF PROGRAMS THE IS BASICALLY BEING DISCUSSED FOR BUDGET CUTS ALREADY AND ELIMINATION OR PAUSES.
WE WERE SPEAKING ABOUT THAT BEFORE THE MEETING WITH KAREN AND OTHER PROGRAMS. RIGHT. AS YOU SEE, PART TIME HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM, HEALTH CARE PATHWAYS FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS, STUDENTS SUCCESS COMPLETION GRANTS, ZERO TEXTBOOK COSTS, AND A VERY LONG LIST OF PROGRAMS THAT TOTAL ROUGHLY $1 BILLION ON CUTS.
I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
I'M SAYING IS THIS IS THE LIST THAT WAS PUT TOGETHER FOR THE LEGISLATORS TO ANALYZE AND DETERMINE WHAT, IF ANY, OF THOSE PROGRAMS WILL NOT GET CUT OR IF THEY CUT PARTIAL PIECES OF THOSE PROGRAMS. SO I'LL LET FELIPE FINISH HERE.
THANK YOU, DOCTOR FIERRO. GIVEN WHAT DOCTOR FIERRO HAS MENTIONED EARLY ON IN THIS PROCESS, WE IDENTIFIED SOME THINGS THAT WE NEEDED TO DO TO REACT TOWARDS THIS.
YOU KNOW, OBVIOUSLY, IT'S DIFFICULT TO KIND OF FIGURE OUT EXACTLY WHAT'S GOING ON, ON, ON THE STATE BUDGET GIVEN THIS YEAR IS, YOU KNOW, THE STATE HAS BEEN REALLY TIGHT LIPPED ON A LOT OF INFORMATION.
AND SO AND I HAVE PERSONALLY MET WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE MONTHLY THIS ENTIRE YEAR AS PART OF A WORK GROUP THAT I WORK ON WITH THE FOR THE STATEWIDE WITH FOR SOME STATEWIDE WORK.
AND IT'S JUST BEEN VERY DIFFICULT.
SO KNOWING A NUMBER OF THINGS, KNOWING THAT WHEN OUR FIRST PERIOD PRINCIPAL APPORTIONMENT WAS ISSUED EARLIER THIS YEAR, WE SAW KIND OF THE WRITING ON THE WALL.
WE SAW THE DEFICIT FACTOR THAT WAS APPLIED TO US AT P1, WHICH I'LL GET TO IN A MOMENT.
SO WE KIND OF STARTED LOOKING AT THIS KNOWING THAT, YOU KNOW, WHAT OUR FOCUS HERE IS.
DOCTOR FIERRO MENTIONED EARLIER, IS MAINTAINING GOODS AND SERVICES ACROSS THE BOARD.
RIGHT. SO THAT THAT IS OUR KEY PROCESS OF OF WHAT WE WANT TO DO.
WE WANT TO MAINTAIN OUR LEVEL OF BEING ABLE TO PROVIDE THE CAMPUS WITH THE SERVICES AND PROGRAMS ON THAT TO DO THAT, WE KNEW WE STARTED HAVING TO MAKE SOME CHANGES.
AND THAT WAS JUST TO KIND OF OKAY, LET'S LET'S CURVE OUR EXPENDITURES BACK AS MUCH AS WE CAN.
IN ADDITION TO THAT, WE ALSO ISSUED ON OUR DISCRETIONARY FUNDS.
THOSE ARE OUR NON PERSONNEL FUNDS.
REALLY NON-ESSENTIAL PURCHASES.
WE WERE STARTING TO HOLD BACK AND LIMIT THOSE.
SO WE TRIED TO DO OUR BEST ON ON PICKING AND CHOOSING, OKAY, WHAT IS ESSENTIAL, WHAT IS NOT, AND THEN TRY TO CURVE THOSE BACK UP ON THAT AND REALLY KIND OF HOLDING TIGHT UNTIL WE GET MORE INFORMATION.
WE DID THIS BECAUSE AGAIN, WE'RE PREPPING BECAUSE WE KNOW CUTS ARE GOING TO COME.
WE KNOW WE'RE GOING TO FACE SOME TROUBLES.
SO LET'S START PLANNING FOR IT.
WE START BUILDING UP OUR RESERVES AND NOT SPENDING DOWN OUR ENTIRE BUDGETS RIGHT AWAY BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, WE MAY NEED TO CARRY THIS FORWARD ULTIMATELY THROUGH THE NEXT SEVERAL FISCAL YEARS.
[01:05:09]
SO IN ADDITION TO THOSE TWO ITEMS THAT WE ACTUALLY DID PUT INTO PLACE, WE'RE ALSO PLANNING FOR FOR AN ADDITIONAL THINGS COMING DOWN THE PIPELINE.AS I MENTIONED BEFORE, THE DEFICIT FACTOR THAT WAS REPORTED, WE HAD A LOSS ALREADY TO OUR PRINCIPAL APPORTIONMENT OF $5.2 MILLION ALREADY. SO WE ALREADY KNOW, GIVEN TODAY, IF THE STATE WAS GOING TO FUND US, WE'RE BASICALLY BEING FUNDED $5.2 MILLION LOWER THAN WHAT OUR FUNDING FORMULA SAYS THAT WE'RE ENTITLED TO.
AND THAT'S JUST BECAUSE THERE'S NOT ENOUGH FUNDS TO GO ACROSS THE BOARD.
SO AGAIN, WE WE HAVE TO TAKE A HIT.
ALL 73 DISTRICTS ACROSS THE BOARD TAKE A HIT EQUALLY ON THAT.
AND OUR THAT PERCENTAGE WAS 3.55 AT P1.
WE DO ANTICIPATE AT P2 THAT PERCENTAGE IS LIKELY GOING TO INCREASE.
AND SO WE MADE SOME ADJUSTMENTS TO WEATHER THE STORM OF THE 5.2.
AND I THINK, YOU KNOW, THAT IS MANAGEABLE.
BUT AS IT STARTS GROWING AND AGAIN, THE UNKNOWN IS WHAT THAT FACTOR IS GOING TO BE.
AND ULTIMATELY, THERE COULD BE A, A CONVERSATION ABOUT CUTS.
BUT AGAIN, WE ARE ANTICIPATING CUTS BASED ON THE INFORMATION WE'RE GIVING, BASED ON THE SHORTFALL FROM THE GOVERNOR'S BUDGET PROPOSAL, OR REVENUES ARE COMING IN LESS THAN WHAT IS ANTICIPATED.
SO WE DO ANTICIPATE BUDGET DEFICIT FACTOR TO GROW ON THAT AND SAYING THAT WE ALSO ARE ANTICIPATING DEFERRALS. WE ALL KNOW THAT THAT'S LIKELY GOING TO HAPPEN WHICH BASICALLY MEANS IS, YOU KNOW, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO REALLY MONITOR CASH FLOW BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY THE STATE'S GOING TO SAY, HEY, SORRY, WE CAN'T PAY YOU TODAY, BUT WE'LL PAY YOU TOMORROW.
WE MAY NOT GET A CHECK FROM THE STATE.
BUT THERE'S MECHANISMS THAT WE CAN IMPLEMENT TO HELP WITHSTAND ANY POTENTIAL CASH SHORTAGES ON THAT.
LIKE I SAID, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT DOCTOR FERREIRA AND I DO WEEKLY BASIS IS MONITOR CASH FLOW.
THAT IS A WEEKLY TOPIC ON OUR AGENDA.
SO WE HAVE MECHANISM IN PLACE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE ABLE TO RESPOND VERY QUICKLY.
IF WE START SEEING THE WRITING ON THE WALL OF OF CASH SHORTAGES ON THAT.
SO AND THAT'S REALLY KIND OF WHAT WE HAVE, YOU KNOW, PLANNING ON THAT.
COME NEXT BOARD AGENDA THE STUDY SESSION.
THANK YOU PHILIP AND DOCTOR FERRO.
ANY QUESTIONS? COMMENTS? NO, JUST THANK YOU FOR KEEPING US UP TO DATE.
IT'S HARD TO GIVE LOTS OF UPDATES ON.
THANK YOU TO DOCTOR FIERRO. BECAUSE I KNOW FOR BEING A PRESIDENT, HE'S VERY TUNED IN TO SACRAMENTO.
THANK YOU. AND. AGAIN, AND HOW WE ALWAYS CLOSE THIS.
THIS IS NOT THE POINT OF THIS.
THE POINT OF THIS IS TO MAKE SURE THERE IS A HIGH LEVEL OF TRANSPARENCY THAT WE KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING TO, TO UNDERSTAND THE OR PLAN IS TO ENSURE THAT WE ARE ABLE TO MAINTAIN OPERATIONS.
WE HAVE BEEN PLANNING SINCE SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER.
I THINK WE SAW THIS COMING AND WE ARE PREPARED TO DO THAT.
[01:10:01]
BUT IN ORDER TO GET THERE, AS THEY SAID, WE NEED TO TIGHTEN OUR BELTS.WE CANNOT SPEND MORE THAN WHAT WE HAVE.
WE HAVE CONSERVATIVE IN THE APPROACH OF HOW WE HANDLE OUR EXPENSES FROM THIS POINT ON, BECAUSE THE WAY THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT THIS RIGHT NOW, WE CANNOT AFFORD TO GROW.
WE CANNOT AFFORD TO MAKE OR BUDGET CHANGE TOO MUCH.
THE OR CURRENT SALARY BENEFITS IS AN 90 LOW 90S, LOW 90, 90, 91, 92%.
AND IF WE GET A CUT IN THE BUDGET OR A DEFICIT, THE ONLY PLACE WHERE WE CAN TAKE THAT MONEY IS FROM THE 8% OR LESS IN OPERATIONS, WHICH ESSENTIALLY ANY CHANGES ON HOW WE MANAGE OR RESOURCES ON CAMPUS COULD REALLY LEAD TO NOT COMFORTABLE POSITIONS LIKE WE ARE RIGHT NOW.
WE'RE WE GOT IT COVERED FOR NEXT YEAR AT LEAST.
THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATES AND THE INFORMATION AND ALSO THE TRANSPARENCY TO FOR THE COLLEGE COMMUNITY TO KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING AND WHAT HOW WE MOVE FORWARD IN A POSITIVE WAY AS MUCH AS WE CAN.
[2.02 Institutional Presentation: Recognition of Retiree]
PRESENTED BY DOCTOR GARY PRITCHARD, INSTITUTIONAL DEAN OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION.PROFESSOR, UNFORTUNATELY, HAS TO BE SO ACCURATE WITH THE SEGMENTATION.
I'M NOT SURE IF YOU WANT ME TO SAY FALCON BLUE NOW.
I'M NOT SURE IF YOU'D LIKE ME TO MAKE THE REMARKS OR IF I THINK HE'LL COME NEXT WEEK.
I CERTAINLY WE COULD TABLE IT FOR A FOLLOWING MEETING AND THEN PUT THEM FIRST.
OKAY. VERY GOOD. I'LL LET HIM KNOW WE APOLOGIZE.
IS THAT OKAY? OR WOULD YOU PREFER TO PRESENT? NO, NO, NO. THAT'S FINE.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR COMING, THOUGH.
OKAY. NEXT ITEM IS 2.03 RECOGNITION OF MANAGERS OF THE YEAR.
[2.03 Institutional Presentation: Recognition of Managers of the Year]
WE HAVE THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES WILL RECOGNIZE THE FOLLOWING INDIVIDUALS AS THE 2024 MANAGERS OF THE YEAR.CLASSIFIED. MARIA CASTRO, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR.
ACADEMIC COLLEEN MCKINLEY, ACTING DEAN OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS AND STRATEGIC INITIATIVES.
OKAY, SEE, IT DOES HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF A BLUE TINGE.
IT IS CONFUSING. YEAH, IT WAS TOTALLY WITH THE LIGHT.
BOARD LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE MEMBERS.
I'M ELIZABETH ELIZABETH MILLER.
I'M THE DEAN OF STUDENT SERVICES AND THE CURRENT ACMI PRESIDENT.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO POINT OUT THAT THE MANAGER OF THE YEAR AWARD IS NOT SOLELY GIVEN FROM MANAGERS TO OTHER MANAGERS, BUT RATHER NOMINATIONS COME FROM ACROSS THE ENTIRE CAMPUS COMMUNITY. SO THE TWO INDIVIDUALS THAT WE ARE HONORING TONIGHT, I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO WORK CLOSELY WITH AND HAVE GREAT RESPECT FOR THEM BOTH.
AND SO I'LL CALL THEM UP SO THEY CAN AWKWARDLY STAND NEXT TO ME WHILE WE SHOWER THEM WITH PRAISE.
FIRST WILL BE COLLEEN MCKINLEY.
AS OUR ACADEMIC MANAGER OF THE YEAR.
COLLEEN. COLLEEN MCKINLEY IS THE ACTING DEAN OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS AND STRATEGIC INITIATIVES, AND ALSO THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS AND PROGRAMS, AT LEAST UNTIL THE END OF TONIGHT WHEN THERE'S A READOUT.
COLLEEN HAS ESTABLISHED OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP, ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT, AND COLLABORATION ACROSS CAMPUS AND THROUGHOUT OUR COMMUNITIES, AND UNWAVERING SUPPORT TO STUDENTS AND TO HER TEAMS IN OUR COMMUNITIES.
COLLEEN HAS FORGED PARTNERSHIPS WITH EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS AND K-12 DISTRICTS, CSUS, AND VARIOUS COMMUNITY PROGRAMS. THESE PARTNERSHIPS ENHANCE CERRITOS COLLEGE'S CERRITOS COLLEGE'S REPUTATION AND ALSO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH ACCESS TO RESOURCES AND EXPERIENCES TO ACHIEVE THEIR EDUCATIONAL
[01:15:02]
GOALS. IN DOING SO, OUR CERRITOS COMPLETE DUAL ENROLLMENT AND TEACHER TECH TEACHER TRACK PROGRAMS IN PARTICULAR HAVE SEEN EXPONENTIAL GROWTH, WHICH IS CULTIVATED BY STRONG COORDINATION AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH BOTH INSTRUCTIONAL AND NON-INSTRUCTIONAL AREAS, AS WELL AS NUMEROUS COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDERS.IN FACT, SHE RECEIVED MULTIPLE NOMINATIONS FROM EXTERNAL PARTNERS WHO NOTED THEIR HIGH REGARD FOR COLLEEN AND HER ABILITY TO CREATE MEANINGFUL STUDENT SUCCESS PROGRAMS THROUGH THESE PARTNERSHIPS.
FOLKS NOTE THAT COLLEEN IS FRIENDLY, WARM, CARING, AND TO QUOTE, THE IDEAL BLEND OF PROFESSIONALISM AND COMPASSION AND THAT SHE IS ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP EVEN BEYOND THE PROFESSIONAL REALM.
AND EVEN THE HARDEST ROLES, SHE COMES BACK EVERY YEAR, SO I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT.
ONE MEMBER OF THE OFFICE NOTED THAT KILLEEN INSPIRES A CULTURE OF TEAMWORK AND MUTUAL SUPPORT WITHIN THE COLLEGE, WHILE ANOTHER NOMINATION SIMILARLY NOTED THAT KILLEEN EMBODIES THE SPIRIT OF SERVICE AND HARD WORK, BOTH HIGHLIGHTING HER LEADERSHIP APPROACH THAT ALIGNS DIRECTLY WITH THE CORE VALUES OF CERRITOS COLLEGE.
SO CONGRATULATIONS MY FRIEND COLLEEN MCKINLEY, THE 2024 ACADEMIC MANAGER OF THE YEAR.
AND THERE ARE OH, THERE WE GO.
YOU GET TO. HAVE A MEDAL AND A MEDAL AND EVERYTHING.
SURE. CAN I GET IT WITH THE WHOLE APARTMENT? YEAH. AND FAMILY.
SORRY. DO YOU MIND IF I HAVE YOU MOVE REALLY QUICKLY? SORRY. OKAY.
ALL RIGHT, WELL, MARIA CASTRO HAS BEEN WITH CERRITOS COLLEGE SINCE 2013.
AS AN INSTRUCTOR AND ATHLETIC TRAINER, MARIA CONTRIBUTED DIRECTLY TO THE LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF UP AND COMING ATHLETIC TRAINERS, AND ALTHOUGH NO LONGER TEACHING, SHE CONTINUES TO SERVE AS A MENTOR AND A ROLE MODEL TO MANY OF THEM TODAY.
IS THAT IS THAT THAT CORRECT? THERE'S NO LIKE TRIPLE C.
OKAY. ATHLETIC GUIDELINES AND OUR ATHLETIC TEAMS HAVE EXCELLENT COMPLIANCE DURING COVID.
MARIA ALSO IMPLEMENTED AND MAINTAINED A STRICT SPECIAL PROTOCOL TO ADDRESS HEALTH AND SAFETY NEEDS, WHICH IS NO SIMPLE TASK FOR THE VOLUME OF PARTICIPANTS AND LATER ON, SPECTATORS AT EVENTS.
[01:20:01]
MARIA ALSO ENSURES EVERY ATHLETIC COACH IS HIRED, CREATED A COACH'S ATHLETICS HANDBOOK, AND ALSO PREPARES FOR EVERY ATHLETIC EVENT.MARIA SHOWS INCREDIBLE LEADERSHIP THROUGH HER ACTIONS AND STEPS UP TO GET THE JOB DONE.
AS NOTED IN ONE NOMINATION, MARIA POURS HER HEART INTO CERRITOS COLLEGE, ENSURING OUR ATHLETICS PROGRAMS RUN SMOOTHLY, AND SHE HANDLES IT ALL WHILE STILL OFFERING TO HELP OTHERS WITH A SMILE ON HER FACE.
THANK YOU. I KNOW YOU WANT TO SCOOT THIS WAY A LITTLE BIT.
I KNOW I PUT THEM IN THE PICTURE.
THREE. NOW I GET MY WORK FAMILY, TOO.
OVER HERE. COME ON, WRESTLERS.
YOU GUYS ARE PART OF MY FAMILY.
YOU HAVE TO TAKE TWO PICTURES TODAY.
YOU GET RECOGNIZED TWICE BECAUSE YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME.
YOU'RE USED TO GOING LOW, RIGHT? YEAH. RIGHT.
CALM DOWN. YOU'RE PERFECT. YOU'RE PERFECT.
THANK YOU. CONGRATULATIONS TO COLIN MCKINLEY AND MARIA CASTRO.
[2.04 Institutional Presentation: Recognition of Women's Wrestling Team, CCCAA Champions, and Dustin Kirk, CCCAA Coach of the Year]
KIRK AA COACH OF THE YEAR.IN THEIR TWO SEASONS OF EXISTENCE, THE CERRITOS COLLEGE WOMEN'S WRESTLING TEAM HAS WON EVERY CHAMPIONSHIP AVAILABLE AND CAPPED OFF THEIR SECOND STRAIGHT THIRD THREE SEED TO A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AT SACRAMENTO COLLEGE ON SATURDAY, APRIL 20TH.
THE FALCONS, WHO WON THE THREE SEED, TWO TEAM DUAL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP EARLIER IN THE SEASON, HAD THREE INDIVIDUAL STATE CHAMPIONS ON THEIR WAY TO 175 TEAM POINTS.
THEY OUTDID THEY OUTDISTANCED SECOND PLACE MOUNT SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE BY 47.5 TEAM POINTS.
FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT SEASON.
DUSTIN KIRK WAS ALSO NAMED THE THREE C-2A COACH OF THE YEAR.
HELLO? YEAH, I JUST WANTED TO, YOU KNOW, STAND UP HERE AND SAY THANK YOU.
NONE OF THIS WOULD BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT DOCTOR FERRO.
AND YOU KNOW, THE BOARD MEMBERS.
AND I ALSO IS VERY HAPPY TO BE ABLE TO CELEBRATE MARIA CASTRO, BECAUSE WITHOUT HER ADVOCATING FOR THE WOMEN TO BE ABLE TO GIVE THEM THIS PLATFORM, NONE OF THIS WOULD BE POSSIBLE. YOU KNOW THANK ALL THESE YOUNG LADIES FOR, YOU KNOW, GIVING US A CHANCE TO, TO BE ABLE TO CHASE THEIR DREAMS AND CHASE THEIR ACADEMIC GOALS AS WELL.
YOU KNOW, IT'S JUST FOR US, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE PROCESS.
YOU KNOW, WE WE TALK ABOUT YOU GOT TO BE A CHAMPION BEFORE YOU BECOME A CHAMPION.
AND IN DOING SO, YOU KNOW, I COULD KIND OF GLADLY SAY WE'RE UP AT 45 TO 50 NUMBERS.
WE HAVE STUDENT ATHLETES ABOUT 45 TO 50 GIRLS NEXT YEAR.
[01:25:02]
SO WE'RE LOOKING TO GROW THE TEAM AND BUILD THE SPORT AT THIS LEVEL.I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU ALL FOR GIVING WOMEN'S WRESTLING AN OPPORTUNITY.
IMPRESSIVE WORK TO THE ENTIRE TEAM.
BUT I I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT DUSTIN FIRST.
THE WORK THAT HE HAS DONE OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS IS NOTHING SHORT OF IMPRESSIVE.
NOT JUST BECAUSE OF THE CHAMPIONSHIPS, BUT ONE THE LEVEL OF PROFESSIONALISM THAT HE CHOSE WHEN HE'S HERE AND WHEN HE'S WORKING WITH THE TEAM AND HIS COLLEAGUES. AND TWO, BECAUSE WE ARE AN ACADEMIC INSTITUTION AND YES, WE DO HAVE TEAMS AND WE PLAY A SPORTS AND WE HAPPEN TO BE REALLY GOOD AT THEM, BUT WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE STUDENT ATHLETES GET THE ATTENTION, SUPPORT THEY NEED IN THE CLASSROOM AND GRADUATE AND TRANSFER SUCCESSFULLY. AND YOU HAVE ADDRESSED ALL THOSE ITEMS. SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH. WE HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLY LUCKY TO HAVE DUSTIN WORKING WITH US AND OBVIOUSLY COACHING OUR TEAM.
SO CONGRATULATIONS, DUSTIN AGAIN.
COULD TAKE A PICTURE WITH THE BOARD.
I'M ASSUMING THEY GET IT AGAIN NEXT YEAR.
BUT IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THEM, RUSSELL WRESTLE.
YOU SHOULD. AND ONE OF THE MATCHES HERE, AT LEAST IN COLLEGE, THEY ARE INCREDIBLE.
THERE WILL BE EXPECTING TO SEE YOU HERE NEXT YEAR AT THE SAME TIME.
SO I DON'T KNOW WHO IS THE TEAM CAPTAIN OR.
AND IF YOU DON'T MIND, WE CAN TAKE A PICTURE WITH THE ENTIRE BOARD AND THE ENTIRE TEAM.
OR CAN THE BOARD GET A PICTURE? THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
I APPRECIATE IT. YEAH, WE'RE ON TRACK FOR 40, 45 GIRLS NEXT YEAR, SO IT'S A GOOD.
YEAH. I DON'T HAVE ALL OF THEM HERE.
OKAY, SO I DON'T WANT TO JUST DO, LIKE, A THIRD OF THEM.
THANKS. FOR THE BIG RESPONSIBILITY OF CARRYING THAT TROPHY AROUND EVERYWHERE, RIGHT? I. WANT TO FRAME THE TROPHY.
WELL. YOU GUYS CAN SCOOT BACK AS FAR AS YOU CAN.
CONGRATULATIONS, EVERYONE, AND THANK YOU FOR COMING.
THANK YOU. AND NEXT ITEM IS 2.05 INSTITUTIONAL PRESENTATION MENTAL HEALTH WORKER PROGRAM.
[2.05 Institutional Presentation: Mental Health Worker Program]
DOCTOR JACQUELINE RONQUILLO ADACHI, PROFESSOR AND CHAIR OF PSYCHOLOGY, WILL PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW OF THE MENTAL HEALTH WORKER PROGRAM AT CERRITOS COLLEGE.GREAT. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE ABOUT OUR PROGRAM.
RECENTLY I ATTENDED THE LEAGUE FOR INNOVATION IN COMMUNITY COLLEGES CONFERENCE.
[01:30:03]
AND SO THIS IS A SNIPPET OF THAT PRESENTATION.AND IT WAS PRETTY MUCH ABOUT OUR MENTAL HEALTH WORKER PROGRAM.
I'VE SHORTENED THIS TALK, GIVEN THAT I HAVE ABOUT A TEN MINUTE TIME FRAME.
BUT SO IN THIS PRESENTATION, WHAT I'D LIKE TO DO IS SHARE ABOUT, BRIEFLY ABOUT THE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH WORKFORCE SHORTAGE, ESPECIALLY WITHIN OUR OWN COMMUNITY IN LA COUNTY. AND THEN TALK ABOUT HOW SERIOUS COLLEGE IS IN A POSITION TO HELP ADDRESS THIS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL SHORTAGE.
SO I'M A RESEARCHER BY NATURE.
AND SO I WENT INTO THE RESEARCH.
AND THIS STUDY WAS DONE BY THE HEALTH CENTER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA OR AT UCSF, THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO.
AND I WAS ACTUALLY A RESEARCH PARTICIPANT IN THIS STUDY.
AND SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I REALIZED WHEN THEY WERE INTERVIEWING ME WAS THAT WHEN WE'RE ONE OF VERY FEW PROGRAMS IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA THAT HAVE THIS TYPE OF PROGRAM TO ADDRESS THE NEED FOR MENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH WORKERS AND ALSO THAT WE DON'T HAVE VERY MUCH FOLLOW UP IN TERMS OF WHAT OUR STUDENTS ARE DOING AFTER THE PROGRAM.
BUT WHAT THE RESEARCH HAS SHOWN IS THAT MENTAL HEALTH WORKERS ARE A VERY INTEGRAL PART OF THE OF HELPING OTHERS THAT NEED THE, THE, THE ASSISTANCE.
SO IN NO WAY ARE THEY BEING TRAINED TO BE THERAPISTS THEMSELVES YET.
RIGHT. BUT MORE SO ASSISTING IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE IN NEED OF SERVICES UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE SKILLS THAT THEY CAN DEVELOP SUCH AS COPING, PROBLEM SOLVING, SELF MANAGEMENT, AND ALSO YOU KNOW, ADDRESSING THE CLIENT'S SOCIAL NEEDS.
AND SO THEY'RE IN A UNIQUE POSITION TO HELP THOSE THAT ARE IN NEED.
I THINK THAT'S A HUGE ESPECIALLY POST-PANDEMIC.
THERE'S A HUGE NEED FOR FOR FOR THIS REDUCTION IN STIGMA BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE IN NEED OF HELP AND ALSO TO HELPING TO FOSTER MORE INVOLVEMENT IN THE TREATMENT PROCESS.
FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU HAVE SOMEBODY WHO DOESN'T.
A MENTAL HEALTH WORKER MIGHT HELP TO CLARIFY WHAT THAT PROCESS IS AND HOW IT CAN HELP THEM.
ALSO TOO, IN TERMS OF THE US BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS IT HAS SHOWN A STRONG JOB MARKET FOR THIS.
ANYTHING THAT WE CAN DO TO HELP INCREASE OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS, I THINK THAT THIS PROGRAM WAS AROUND SINCE 2005, BUT HAS SEEN RECENT GROWTH IN RECENT YEARS, AND PART OF THAT IS DUE TO SOME OF THE DUAL ENROLLMENT PATHWAYS THAT WE'VE CREATED WITH THIS PROGRAM.
SO I'LL DISCUSS THOSE IN A LITTLE BIT.
ALSO TO WHAT THE RESEARCH HAS SHOWN IS THAT ESPECIALLY WITH THESE TYPES OF BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PROGRAMS THAT ARE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE THAT WE ARE GROWING AN ETHNICALLY AND RACIALLY DIVERSE HEALTH CARE WORKFORCE.
AND SO, AGAIN, IF WE'RE GROWING OUR OWN MENTAL HEALTH WORKERS WITHIN OUR OWN COMMUNITY, THEY LIVE IN THIS COMMUNITY, THEY SPEAK THE LANGUAGE, AND WE AREN'T IN NEED OF THAT AS WELL. SO YOU KNOW, MENTAL HEALTH WORKERS THAT ARE CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY SKILLED IS ANOTHER SORT OF OUTCOME OF THIS PROGRAM.
BUT AGAIN, AS I MENTIONED, THE GOAL IS TO CREATE PARAPROFESSIONALS IN COMMUNITY BASED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PROGRAMS. WE'RE WE'RE IN A THE TRAINING PARADIGM IS A PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION AND RECOVERY PARADIGM.
THE PROFESSORS IN THESE PROGRAMS HAVE THEIR THEY'RE USUALLY LICENSED CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKERS.
AND SO THEY'RE, YOU KNOW, DIFFERENT FROM PSYCHOLOGY BUT ALSO RELATED TO PSYCHOLOGY.
SO IT'S HOUSED WITHIN THE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT.
[01:35:02]
MENTAL HEALTH WORKER RIGHT AFTER AFTER THE PROGRAM.AND I HAVE A FEW TESTIMONIALS OF STUDENTS WHO HAVE BECOME SUCCESSFUL WITH THAT.
SO I WAS I CAN'T TAKE CREDIT FOR STARTING THIS PROGRAM.
AND WHAT'S NICE ABOUT THIS PROGRAM IS THAT IT HAS A FIELD EXPERIENCE APPROACH TO IT.
AND SO THERE'S A THE LAST COURSE IN THE PROGRAM IS A FIELD EXPERIENCE CLASS.
AND I THINK THAT THAT'S DEFINITELY SOMETHING THAT IS INVALUABLE, IS THAT STUDENTS ARE GETTING EXPERIENCE IN THIS PROGRAM WHEN THEY APPLY TO THEIR BACHELOR'S OF SOCIAL WORK PROGRAMS OR THEIR GRADUATE DEGREES LATER ON.
WE PARTNERED WITH CAL HOSA, WHICH IS AN ORGANIZATION WITH THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, AND THEY PROVIDED US WITH SOME GRANT SEED MONEY TO ESTABLISH A DUAL ENROLLMENT PATHWAY WITH LOS ALTOS HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH IS IN HACIENDA HEIGHTS.
AND THAT WAS A VERY SUCCESSFUL PATHWAY.
I'M ACTUALLY ATTENDING THEIR AWARDS NIGHT THIS FRIDAY AND HELPING WITH THE CERTIFICATES AND AWARDING 15 OF THIS YEAR'S HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH WORKER CERTIFICATE. WE'VE ALSO ESTABLISHED PATHWAYS WITH NORWALK-LA MIRADA, AND SO IT'S A COMBINATION OF JOHN GLENN HIGH SCHOOL AND NORWALK HIGH SCHOOL.
AND SO THAT'S ANOTHER PATHWAY THAT WE HAVE.
AND YOU KNOW, I WAS NICE TO SEE COLLEEN MCKINLEY HONORED TONIGHT BECAUSE I'VE WORKED REALLY CLOSELY, CLOSELY WITH HER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS AND THE WHOLE DUAL ENROLLMENT TEAM, AND THEY'RE JUST FANTASTIC.
SO JUST REALLY GREAT TO SEE THAT STUDENTS ARE STARTING IN HIGH SCHOOL AND HOPEFULLY THEY COME TO CERRITOS COLLEGE, DO THIS. THE THE REST OF THE CLASSES THEY NEED TO TRANSFER AND THEN MOVE ON INTO THEIR BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CAREER.
SOME OF THE GRADUATES FROM THE PROGRAM, I JUST WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT THIS IS CECILIA AMARO, AND SHE SAYS MY LIFE EXPERIENCES AND STRUGGLES CREATED A PASSION IN ME TO HELP PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES ACHIEVE A BETTER LIFE.
THE PROGRAM TAUGHT ME THE BASICS OF PSYCHOLOGY AND THE FOUNDATION FOR ACHIEVING GOOD MENTAL HEALTH.
THEY ALSO PROVIDED ME WITH WITH AN INTERNSHIP AT MENTAL HEALTH AMERICA.
THROUGH THIS INTERNSHIP, I HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN THE TEAM AS AN INTENSIVE CASE MANAGER AND THANKS TO THE MENTAL HEALTH WORKER PROGRAM AND GREAT PROFESSORS, I FEEL PREPARED FOR MY NEW ROLE.
AND SO CECILIA IS HOPEFULLY SOMEBODY THAT I WILL BE INTERVIEWING SOON FOR MY SABBATICAL TO DELVE A LITTLE BIT DEEPER INTO HOW THE PROGRAM HERE AT CHIOS COLLEGE HAS PREPARED HER FOR WHERE SHE'S WORKING NOW.
AND LAMONT PEACE IS ANOTHER ONE OF OUR STUDENTS.
AND NOT ONLY ARE THEY ADVANCING THEIR OWN CAREER, BUT THEY'RE ALSO SERVING OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS.
LAMONT ACTUALLY RECENTLY ASKED ME FOR A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION AS APPLYING FOR MASTERS OF FAMILY THERAPY PROGRAMS. SO IT'S VERY NICE TO SEE THAT HE STARTED HERE AT CERRITOS AND IS CONTINUING ON WITH HIS GRADUATE DEGREE.
MAURICIO VASQUEZ IS WORKING WITH PATH.
MAURICIO WILL TELL HIS VERY INSPIRING STORY.
[01:40:02]
VICTORY STARTS NOW. SO YOU CAN SEE THESE ARE ALL LOCAL AGENCIES.AND AGAIN, AS I MENTIONED BEFORE, STUDENTS TEND TO YOU KNOW, AGAIN, JUST THE THE VALUE OF BEING ABLE TO TAKE WHAT THEY LEARN IN THEIR CLASSES AND APPLY IT, I THINK, IS WHERE THIS PROGRAM HAS A LOT OF BENEFITS FOR OUR STUDENTS.
IT'S INTERESTING BECAUSE A LOT OF TIMES SOME OF THE STUDENTS ARE STUDENTS WHO ARE ALREADY WORKING IN THE FIELD AND THEN WANT TO GET SOME SORT OF CERTIFICATION AND JUST IN FULL TRANSPARENCY. THIS IS NOT LIKE A STATE LICENSE CERTIFICATION.
WHEN I WENT TO THE CONFERENCE, THERE WERE SOME BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN THE ROOM, AND THAT WAS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE QUESTIONS THAT I GOT WAS, IS THIS ALIGNED WITH, YOU KNOW, STATE REQUIREMENTS? AND IT IS NOT.
THERE'S A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS.
RIGHT. AND THIS PARADIGM THAT THEY'RE TRAINED ON IS RECOVERY.
AND SO REALLY BELIEVING THAT SOMEBODY WHO IS SUFFERING FROM A MENTAL ILLNESS CAN RECOVER.
RIGHT. BECAUSE OUR STUDENTS ARE GETTING EMPLOYMENT.
AND I'M EXCITED TO EXPLORE WHAT OTHER PLACES THEY'RE WORKING AT.
BUT BECAUSE I'M A DATA PERSON, I DID PULL A LITTLE BIT OF DATA.
AND YOU CAN SEE HERE THAT THERE HAS BEEN SOME GROWTH.
WE HAVE FOUR PSYCH, 273 CLASSES, AND THAT IS AT 20 STUDENTS EACH.
SO IF YOU CAN, YOU KNOW, SORT OF DO THE MATH, RIGHT.
IF YOU WERE TO CONTINUE THAT AND PROLONG THAT, I MEAN, WE'RE, WE'RE, WE'RE SENDING ABOUT 160 MENTAL HEALTH WORKERS INTO OUR COMMUNITY, RIGHT, FOR EVERY YEAR. AND IF WE CAN CONTINUE TO SEE THIS GROWTH, THAT'D BE AMAZING.
SO WITH THAT, I JUST WANTED TO THANK THE MENTAL HEALTH WORKER PROGRAM FACULTY.
I DON'T TEACH IN THE PROGRAM, SO I DO SUFFER FROM A LITTLE BIT OF IMPOSTER SYNDROME.
WHENEVER I PRESENT ON THIS PROGRAM, I'M TRAINED AS A SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGIST.
AND SO THIS ISN'T MY AREA, BUT IT HAS BEEN VERY REWARDING WORKING WITH THIS PROGRAM.
I'VE LEARNED A LOT ABOUT MENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH.
AND I ALSO WANTED TO JUST AGAIN REITERATE THAT CERRITOS COLLEGE WITH THIS PROGRAM HAS A SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY TO TO BUILD THE PIPELINE LEADING TO A CAREER IN BEHAVIORAL HEALTH. I ALSO WANTED TO THANK THE BOARD AND DOCTOR FIERRO AND ADMINISTRATION FOR APPROVING MY SABBATICAL.
BECAUSE THIS SABBATICAL WILL FOCUS ON THIS PROGRAM AND INTERVIEWING OUR ALUM AND SHOWCASING THEM ON A WEBSITE TO ESSENTIALLY HIGHLIGHT THE SUCCESSES OF, OF OUR OF OUR MENTAL HEALTH WORKERS THAT WE, WE GREW.
AND THEN ALSO TO, TO BUILD A BRIDGE TO THE FOUR YEARS.
SO I'VE MET WITH CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS AND THEY HAVE A BACHELOR'S OF HUMAN SERVICES PROGRAM.
AND I WANT TO FORMALIZE THAT BRIDGE THAT THAT PATHWAY.
AND THEN I'VE ALSO MET WITH CAL STATE, LONG BEACH AND THEIR SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK.
AND SO THERE'S SOME ALIGNMENT AS WELL.
WHAT ARE SOME OTHER OPTIONS FOR TRANSFERRING AND THEN FURTHERING THEIR DEGREE? SO THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THE TIME.
DID ANY BOARD MEMBERS HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? JUST DON'T GO TOO FAR.
I THINK I DIDN'T CATCH WHAT YEAR THE PROGRAM WAS ESTABLISHED.
AND HOW MANY STUDENTS HAVE COMPLETED THE PROGRAM.
SO I BELIEVE IT WAS 2005 OR 2007.
AT LEAST THAT'S WHERE I HAD REACHED OUT TO OUR IRP TO REQUEST SINCE 2007.
[01:45:04]
FILE THAT PAPERWORK.YEAH, THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION.
THANK YOU. ARE THERE ANY COMMENTS QUESTIONS? REALLY I THINK THIS IS VALUABLE.
I THINK MENTAL HEALTH AT ALL LEVELS IN THE COMMUNITY IS IS NEEDED.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. I AGREE, THANK YOU.
BEFORE YOU RUN AWAY, JACQUELINE TOLD YOU NOT TO GET TOO FAR.
SHE HURT MY BACK. SO EARLIER LAST YEAR, WE NOMINATED SOME OF OUR FACULTY FOR NATIONAL AWARD WITH THE LEAGUE FOR INNOVATION AT THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND OR DENTAL HYGIENE FACULTY WERE SOME OF THE AWARDEES.
AND WE ALSO NOMINATED JACQUELINE FOR HER INNOVATIVE WORK HERE ON MENTAL HEALTH.
I DID THE PART, AT LEAST THAT RESONATES THE MOST WITH ME IS BUILDING HEALTHCARE WORKERS IN THE COMMUNITY THAT KNOW THE COMMUNITY AND THAT ARE ALREADY CULTURALLY AWARE OF WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN A LOCAL COMMUNITY.
AND I THINK THAT THAT EFFORT RIGHT THERE HAS TREMENDOUS POTENTIAL TO CONTINUE TO GROW AND TREMENDOUS POTENTIAL TO IMPACT OUR COMMUNITY IN A POSITIVE WAY. AND BECAUSE OF THAT, WE NOMINATED YOU.
AND OBVIOUSLY YOU ARE HERE TO RECEIVE YOUR CERTIFICATE OF RECOGNITION FOR THE AWARD AND A MEDAL.
I HAVE AWARDED MORE MEDALS TODAY THAN I HAVE AWARDED IN ANY OTHER TIME.
SO CONGRATULATIONS, JACQUELINE.
SHE'S A BAD BACK. BE CAREFUL, I KNOW.
HOW ABOUT DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE? THANK YOU.
I APPRECIATE IT. CONGRATULATIONS.
AND THANK YOU FOR THE PRESENTATION.
WE'LL MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ITEM, WHICH IS CONSENT ITEMS.
[3. Consent Items]
WOULD ANYONE LIKE TO PULL ANY ITEM TODAY? WE HAVE TO APPROVE STUFF TODAY.NO PULLING. CAN I GET A MOTION TO APPROVE? MOTION SECOND.
[4.01 College Coordinating Committee Minutes: April 1, 2024, April 15, 2024]
REVISIONS TO ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE AP 6900.[4.02 Revisions to Administrative Procedure: AP 6900 - Travel]

NEXT SECTION ADMINISTRATIVE ITEMS 5.01 PRESENTATION AND CONSIDERATION OF APPROVAL OF STUDENT FIRST FRAMEWORK.[5.01 Presentation and Consideration of Approval of Students First Framework]
FRANK MIXON WILL GIVE US A PRESENTATION.THE BUTTON FRANK BALKAN BLUE I SEE WHAT LIZ MEANS ABOUT THE BLUE.
YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR BLUES AROUND HERE, YOU KNOW.
YEAH. THE SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
THIS WILL BE THIS WILL IN FACT BE OUR NEW EDUCATIONAL MASTER PLAN.
AND THIS PRESENTATION WILL BE IN THREE PARTS.
THE FIRST PART WILL BE PRIOR TO THE RETREAT.
SO I WILL BEGIN WITH OUR TEAM, OUR PLANNING TEAM.
THE ORIGINAL INTENT INTENT OF THE TEAM WAS TO HELP PLAN THE RETREAT, BUT IN THE END THEY HELPED IN WORDING DEVELOPING THE LEVERS AND THE LANGUAGE DEFINING THE LEVERS.
[01:50:05]
I HAVE INCLUDED THIS LIST OF DATES BECAUSE I WANTED YOU ALL TO SEE THAT THIS TEAM WAS COMMITTED EVERY WEEK, 930 ON WEDNESDAYS, SHOWED UP TO DISCUSS THE PLANNING PROCESS AND GET READY FOR THE RETREAT AND PREPARE THE LEVERS.THE FIRST THING THAT I LIKE TO DO IS EXPLAIN THE IMAGE OF THE LEVERS AND THE AND PEOPLE HAD ASKED US ABOUT THEM, SO I TRY TO TAKE A MOMENT TO DO SO.
SO WE THINK OF THE LEVERS AS WE PULL DOWN ON THE LEVER.
THE LEVER TURNS A GEAR, THAT GEAR TURNS ANOTHER GEAR, AND THAT GEAR TURNS ANOTHER GEAR UNTIL YOU PRODUCE THE OBJECT YOU DESIRE.
WHEN THAT DOESN'T WORK IS WHEN THE THE GEARS ARE NOT ALIGNED PROPERLY.
WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO OVER THE NEXT TEN YEARS IS ALIGN THOSE GEARS PROPERLY TO PRODUCE, TO HAVE AS MANY STUDENTS AS POSSIBLE GRADUATE IN A TIMELY MANNER.
IN OUR CASE, IN FIVE YEARS OR LESS, 50% IN FIVE YEARS OR LESS.
THE FIRST THREE ARE CENTERED AROUND THE THE STUDENT JOURNEY.
AND THE FOURTH ONE IS AROUND INSTITUTIONAL HEALTH.
I'LL GO THROUGH THE FIRST THREE AND THEN WE'LL TALK ABOUT THE INSTITUTIONAL HEALTH.
SO THE FIRST PART OF THE JOURNEY, EQUITABLE ACCESS.
THIS PORTION DEALS WITH STUDENTS OUTREACHING TO STUDENTS, TO THE INSTITUTION, OUTREACHING TO STUDENTS, TO THOSE STUDENTS APPLYING TO THE COLLEGE AND TO THOSE STUDENTS ENROLLING IN CLASSES.
THE SECOND LEVER HAS TO DO WITH COMPLETION, AND IN REALITY, IT'S ALL THE STEPS LEADING UP TO AND INCLUDING COMPLETION, WHICH MEANS MAKING SURE THOSE STUDENTS GET ON THE RIGHT PATHWAY, ENSURING THOSE STUDENTS GET IN THE CORRECT COURSES, ESPECIALLY MATH AND ENGLISH TO START, AND MAKING SURE THOSE STUDENTS PERSIST FROM FALL TO SPRING AND THEN FROM FALL TO FALL AND SO ON UNTIL THEY GRADUATE WITH THEIR CERTIFICATE OR DEGREE.
THE THIRD LEVER IS CAREER AND TRANSFER SUCCESS.
THIS PERTAINS TO CERTIFICATES AND AAS IN WHICH STUDENTS ARE MOVING INTO THE WORKFORCE.
ADT IS FOR STUDENTS TRANSFERRING TO FOUR YEAR INSTITUTIONS.
STUDENTS COMPLETING BAS HERE AT CERRITOS COLLEGE AND AT FOUR YEAR UNIVERSITIES, AND ULTIMATELY JUST EXPERIENCING SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC MOBILITY.
THAT'S WHAT WE'RE STRIVING FOR FOR OUR STUDENTS.
FINALLY, THE THE THE FOURTH LEVER IS INSTITUTIONAL HEALTH.
THIS LEVER IS BOTH THE CAUSE AND THE EFFECT OF A SUCCESSFUL STUDENT JOURNEY.
IT IS THE CAUSE OF A SUCCESSFUL STUDENT JOURNEY IN THAT A A HEALTHY INSTITUTION HAS THE RESOURCES AND SERVICES THAT HELP THE STUDENT ACHIEVE A SUCCESSFUL JOURNEY.
IT IS AN EFFECT OF THAT SUCCESSFUL JOURNEY IN THAT THE THE INSTITUTION IS REWARDED FINANCIALLY WHEN THESE STUDENTS HAVE THEIR SUCCESSFUL JOURNEY.
SO IN THIS WAY, ONE CLASS, THE GRADUATING CLASS, IS IN FACT PROVIDING THE FINANCIAL RESOURCES FOR THE INCOMING CLASS.
AND THEY CONTINUE TO PERPETUATE THEMSELVES OVER TIME.
SO THESE ARE THE FOUR LEVERS THAT WE DEVELOPED.
AND AGAIN WE WE WE WORKSHOP THEM THROUGH THE PLANNING COMMITTEE.
AND THESE FOUR LEVERS REALLY STRUCTURED THAT RETREAT.
SO HERE ARE THE HERE ARE THE ACTIVITIES AT THAT RETREAT THAT LED US TO THE THE STRATEGIES THAT MAKE UP OUR OUR STUDENTS FIRST FRAMEWORK.
SO THE FIRST ACTIVITY AND THIS WAS ORIGINALLY THOUGHT TO BE A A WARM UP ACTIVITY, BUT IT TURNED OUT TO THAT PEOPLE REALLY ENJOYED IT AND REALLY ENGAGED IN IT.
[01:55:05]
PROGRAM. WE'LL CREATE A POSTER AND WE'LL PUT IT UP AROUND THE ROOM AND LET PEOPLE.IT WILL BE A REMINDER OF THE TYPES OF PROGRAMS WE HAVE HERE ON CAMPUS.
WE MADE THE MEDIA AREA CHELSEA'S AREA MADE BEAUTIFUL POSTERS FOR US.
WE PUT IT UP ON THE PUT THEM UP AROUND THE STAGE AND AT BOTH ENDS OF THE STUDENT CENTER.
AND PEOPLE WERE SIMPLY ASKED, WHAT DID YOU WHAT'S THE ONE THING YOU LEARNED ABOUT THE PROGRAM? AND THEY WENT THROUGH EACH OF THE POSTERS WRITING THIS DOWN, AND THEY REALLY ENJOYED THEMSELVES BECAUSE SOME OF THE PROGRAMS WERE NEW, SUCH AS BIOTECH.
AND THAT HAD BEEN DEVELOPED DURING THE PANDEMIC, AND FEW PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT IT.
AND SO THEY WERE ENJOYED LEARNING ABOUT IT.
AND THEN SOME OF THE PROGRAMS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE, BUT BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN GONE FOR SOME TIME, THIS THESE POSTERS WERE GREAT REMINDERS OF ALL THE GOOD WORK THAT WE ARE DOING ON THIS CAMPUS.
AND THAT'S WHY, AGAIN, THE EMPHASIS IS ON THE GEARS THAT WE HAVE IN PLACE AND ALIGNING THEM SO THAT WE ARE JUST BEING MORE EFFECTIVE IN CREATING SUCCESSFUL STUDENT JOURNEYS.
THE NEXT ACTIVITY WAS IDENTIFYING BARRIERS AND SUPPORT POINTS.
WHAT ARE THE BARRIERS THAT THAT ARE HERE AT CERRITOS THAT HINDER STUDENTS FROM COMPLETING THEIR DEGREES? WHAT ARE THE SUPPORT POINTS THAT HELP THEM COMPLETE THEIR DEGREES? WE IDENTIFIED BOTH SIDES OF THAT EQUATION.
THE NEXT ACTIVITY WAS TO IDENTIFY STRATEGIES THAT WOULD ADDRESS THOSE BARRIERS AND THAT WOULD SUPPORT THAT, AND THAT WOULD EXPAND UPON OR MODIFY THOSE SUPPORT SUPPORT POINTS SO THAT EACH OF THE GROUPS HAD TWO OF THE LEVERS.
THEY WORKED ON BOTH LEVERS FOR A WHILE.
AND DEVELOPING THESE STRATEGIES, THEY USED POST-ITS AND PUT THEM ON THE POSTER BOARDS.
AND THEN THE NEXT THING THAT WE DID WAS WE SENT ONE TABLE.
THEY ROTATED PEOPLE AROUND THE TABLES AND LET THEM REVIEW OTHER PEOPLE'S STRATEGIES.
YOU SEE IN THIS PICTURE, THE YELLOW POST-ITS ARE COMMENTS ON THE GREEN POST-ITS.
AND IT WAS THOSE THOSE POSTERS THAT WE GATHERED AT THE END OF THE RETREAT WITH THOSE PRIORITIZED STRATEGIES, GATHERED THEM, BROUGHT THEM TO THE BOARDROOM AND LET THEM SIT FOR TWO DAYS WHILE WE WENT HOME AND RESTED.
AND THEN WE CAME BACK ON MONDAY AND GOT RIGHT BACK TO WORK.
AND WHAT WE DID THEN IS WE WE FIRST WE WE COLLECTED.
WE THEN SORTED THE MINI POST-ITS.
WE THEN SUMMARIZED THE MINI POST-ITS.
AND ONCE WE HAD THEM SUMMARIZED, WE SENT THEM TO CHAD GREEN.
AND THIS IS THE FIRST SET OF STRATEGIES THAT WERE DEVELOPED FOR THE STUDENTS FIRST FRAMEWORK.
I'M NOT GOING TO READ THEM ALL.
I JUST WANT YOU TO GIVE YOU A SECOND TO READ THROUGH THEM.
THESE ARE THE THE STRATEGIES THAT APPEAR IN THE DOCUMENT.
WE THEN SO WE DEVELOPED SIX STRATEGIES FOR EQUITABLE ACCESS.
AGAIN WRITTEN BY CHAD, REVISED BY THE TEAM.
THE AGAIN PRIORITIZED STRATEGIES.
HERE ARE THE STRATEGIES FOR COMPLETION.
STRATEGIES FOR CAREER AND TRANSFER.
AND FINALLY, STRATEGIES FOR INSTITUTIONAL HEALTH.
AND THEN WE DELIVERED THIS TO CHELSEA AND HER TEAM.
AND THEY DELIVERED TO US A BEAUTIFUL DOCUMENT THAT YOU HAVE IN THE BOARD DOCS.
SO WE THEN AFTER THAT DOCUMENT WAS DEVELOPED, WE SHARED IT WITH THE PLANNING AND BUDGET.
WE SHARED IT WITH FACULTY SENATE.
WE SHARED IT WITH COORDINATING COMMITTEE.
AND TODAY, TONIGHT WE ARE SHARING IT WITH YOU ALL.
[02:00:04]
SO I DIDN'T HIT FIVE MINUTES, BUT I THINK I HIT TEN.HOW MANY TIMES TEN. DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? ANY QUESTIONS? COMMENTS.
PHENOMENAL. I MEAN, THE OBVIOUSLY THE KIND OF KEY COMPONENTS OF THE FRAMEWORK WERE HIGHLY FAMILIAR WITH AT THIS POINT BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN KIND OF IN LONG CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THEM FOR QUITE SOME TIME.
AND SO THERE'S NOTHING NEW THERE, I THINK.
WHAT THE WHAT I REALLY APPRECIATE ABOUT THIS IS THE COLLABORATIVE NATURE OF THE, OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEXT STEPS WITHIN THAT. SO TO BE ABLE TO REALLY GO FROM HERE ARE THE KEY ELEMENTS TO HERE THE KEY STRATEGIES.
AND THEN WHICH I THINK ARE LARGELY WELL ARTICULATED AND SEEM TO REALLY BE SHOW THE VALUE OF UTILIZING DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES IN ORDER TO HAVE A DIVERSE SET OF STRATEGIES THAT SEEM WELL INFORMED FROM A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES.
AND THEN I THINK THEN, YOU KNOW, MAYBE I'D BE REMISS AS A BOARD MEMBER TO NOT SAY, OKAY, HOW DO WE TAKE THIS TO THE NEXT STEP? RIGHT? LIKE SO NOW IT BECOMES THIS TACTICAL QUESTION OF HOW DO WE IMPLEMENT THIS SO THAT WE GET THE OUTCOMES THAT WE'RE, THAT WE'RE ALL KIND OF LIKE STRIVING FOR? AND I THINK THAT'S THE FUN PART ABOUT THIS FOR ME, IS THAT THERE REALLY IS A CLEAR ALIGNMENT AROUND OUTCOME.
AND SO AND, AND I CONTRAST THAT WITH TO SOME OF THE OTHER STUFF WE'VE DONE, WHICH IS LIKE, HERE'S A GOOD THING, HERE'S ANOTHER GOOD THING, HERE'S SOME OTHER GOOD THINGS WE COULD DO AS AN INSTITUTION.
AND THEY'RE ALL KIND OF LIKE SITTING OUT THERE.
BUT THIS HAS A VERY KIND OF ALIGNED SENSE TO EVERYTHING THAT THAT IS IN HERE.
AND THE WAY THAT WE'RE GOING TO KEEP THAT FIRE BURNING IS WE'RE GOING TO MAKE THE STUDENTS FIRST FRAMEWORK A CENTERPIECE OF OUR ANNUAL UNIT PLANNING SO THAT THE LEVERS WILL BE IN THE UNIT PLAN, THE STRATEGIES WILL BE IN THE UNIT PLAN.
THE LANGUAGE WAS SO IMPORTANT BECAUSE WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO ENSURE THAT THAT PAYROLL FEELS AS ENGAGED WITH THESE STRATEGIES AS PSYCHOLOGY, THE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT.
SO IT WILL BE IN THE ANNUAL UNIT PLAN.
THEY WILL ADDRESS IT EACH YEAR.
AND WE BELIEVE THAT WE'VE HIT THE RIGHT LEVEL OF GENERALIZATION THAT GIVES EVERY CONSTITUENT GROUP ON THIS CAMPUS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE. THAT'S GREAT.
THANK YOU. ANY OTHER COMMENTS? YEAH, I'D LIKE TO THANK YOU AND EVERYONE FOR ALL THE HARD WORK.
AND I THINK THAT'S KEY IS IS, LIKE YOU SAID EVEN FROM PAYROLL TO CUSTODIAL, EVERYONE THAT WE'RE ALL PART OF A TEAM WITH THE END POINT BEING STUDENT SUCCESS. RIGHT.
AND I THINK AS, AS LONG AS WE FIND STRATEGIES TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE IS ENGAGED KIND OF AT ALL TIMES AND MAKE IT PART OF OUR NORMAL CULTURE HERE ON CAMPUS, IT'S GOING TO BE A SUCCESS. SO I THINK EVERYONE, FOR ALL THE WORK AND IF THERE'S NO COMMENTS, THEN WE'LL MOVE ON.
THANK YOU. IT WAS A GREAT TEAM EFFORT AND IT WAS A PLEASURE TO BE ON THAT TEAM.
[5.02 Second Reading and Consideration of Adoption of Revised Board Policy 4400 titled Community Education Services]
SERVICES. OH, SORRY.UNOFFICIAL VOTE THERE. OFFICIAL OR UNOFFICIAL? NO. NO. OFFICIAL. OFFICIAL.
SO ON THE CAN I GET A MOTION TO APPROVE STUDENT FIRST FRAMEWORK? GREAT. ENTHUSIASTIC A SECOND.
CAN I GET A MOTION TO APPROVE? SO MOVED. SECOND.
[5.03 Approval of Resolution No. 24-0508A Annual Renewal of Adopting a Military Equipment Policy in Compliance with Assembly Bill 481 and Approval of the annual Military Equipment Report]
481, AND APPROVAL OF THE ANNUAL MILITARY EQUIPMENT REPORT.[02:05:02]
CAN I GET A MOTION, PLEASE? MOTION SECOND.NEXT ITEM IS REPORTS AND COMMENTS FROM DISTRICT OFFICIALS.
[6.01 Reports and Comments from District Officials]
WE'LL START WITH STUDENT TRUSTEE SCOTT.I JUST WANTED TO START OFF BY SAYING THIS IS MY LAST MEETING ON THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
AND I REALLY ENJOYED MY EXPERIENCE.
I LEARNED A LOT IN THIS POSITION FROM HOW TO CONDUCT MYSELF IN AN OFFICIAL MEETING TO WHAT IT TAKES TO RUN AN INSTITUTION SUCH AS CERRITOS COLLEGE.
MY BAD, MY BAD ONE BEFORE THE LAST.
YES. BUT I KNOW THAT KATHY WILL BE INAUGURATED NEXT MONTH FOR SURE.
SO WITH THAT BEING SAID THIS WAS THE LAST SENATE MEETING OF THE YEAR FOR STUDENTS.
SO WE CELEBRATED WITH KARAOKE CANES AND THE KAHOOT, WHICH WAS REALLY FUN.
BUT IT'S JUST OVERALL SAYING THAT IN THE SCHOOL YEAR IS UPON US.
AND YOU KNOW, THE CHANGE THAT'S HAPPENING HERE.
I HAD THE PLEASURE AND OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THE NORWALK MAYOR'S PRAYER BREAKFAST ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17TH AND THE LA MIRADA MAYOR'S PRAYER BREAKFAST ON THE 19TH AS WELL.
AND I SAW TRUSTEE PACHECO THERE AND ASSEMBLY MEMBER PACHECO AS WELL IN ATTENDANCE AND VERY HAPPY TO SEE EVERYBODY COMING TO SEE MY HOMETOWN OF LA MIRADA AND ALL THE GREAT THINGS THAT WE DO.
AND ON, LET ME CHECK MY CALENDAR.
WHAT ELSE DID I DO ON THE 30TH? APRIL 30TH WAS THE K THROUGH 12 PARTNERS, WHICH IS SOMETHING THAT I ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO, TO SEE HOW HOW MUCH WE COLLABORATE WITH ALL OF OUR LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND HOW EXPONENTIAL THE GROWTH HAS BEEN WITH THAT PARTICULAR AREA TO NOT ONLY SEE MORE PEOPLE THERE AND MORE PARTNERS, INCLUDING SOME PRIVATE YOU KNOW, HIGH SCHOOLS, INCLUDING MY FORMER RIVAL, VALLEY HIGH VALLEY CHRISTIAN HIGH, WHICH WE BEAT IN TENNIS AT LEAST ONCE, AT LEAST ONCE THAT WE'VE BEEN IN.
BUT IT'S GREAT THAT WE ARE EXPANDING THOSE PARTNERSHIPS.
AND REALLY, YOU KNOW, COLLEEN HAS DESERVED MORE ACCOLADES THAN JUST THE ONE THAT WE'VE GIVEN HER.
AND I THINK WE'VE GIVEN A NUMBER OVER THE YEARS TO HER AND HER TEAM FOR MAKING ALL OF THE GROWTH HAPPEN AND THE DUAL ENROLLMENT ASPECT, AND NOT JUST DUAL ENROLLMENT SPECIFICALLY, BUT JUST OUR PARTNERSHIPS WITH OUR SCHOOL DISTRICTS.
AND SO, YOU KNOW, IT'S JUST SUCH A HIDDEN GEM THAT, YOU KNOW, PEOPLE ALWAYS KEEP PUTTING, YOU KNOW, THE FOUR YEAR UNIVERSITIES IN, YOU KNOW, THE LIMELIGHT BECAUSE THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT'S ALWAYS BEEN. BUT THIS IS A FAR, FAR BETTER DEAL, NOT JUST ON AN ECONOMIC ASPECT, BUT JUST ON A, YOU KNOW, LITERAL COMMUNITY ASPECT.
AND THAT'S ONE OF THE REASONS WHY WE ARE A COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
WE'RE NOT, YOU KNOW, THE JUNIOR COLLEGES OF YESTER YEAR.
WE ARE, YOU KNOW, ACTUALLY SERVING THE COMMUNITY.
WE ACTUALLY HAVE AN ECONOMIC IMPACT, AND WE HAVE A TRUE INDIVIDUAL IMPACT ON SO MANY STUDENTS THAT WE SEE TIME AND TIME AND AGAIN THAT, YOU KNOW, PEOPLE'S LIVES ARE CHANGED BECAUSE THEY COME HERE.
AND THAT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT YOU'RE EVER GOING TO GET.
CERTAINLY NOT AS LIKELY AS YOU WOULD GET HERE AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE VERSUS ANYWHERE ELSE.
SO I'M VERY PROUD OF ALL THE WORK THAT ALL OF US HAVE DONE AT EVERY LEVEL TO MAKE WHAT WE DO HAPPEN AND HOW EXEMPLARY WE ARE, NOT JUST AS A COMMUNITY COLLEGE, BUT JUST WITHIN OUR OWN INDUSTRY AND WITHIN OUR OWN YOU KNOW, THE COMPARED TO ALL OF OUR, YOU KNOW, OTHER COMMUNITY COLLEGES, WE'RE WE'RE PRETTY DARN GOOD.
SO THANK YOU TO DOCTOR FERREIRA FOR LEADING THE MOVEMENT AND BEING A PIONEER.
AND ALL THE STAFF AND ADMINISTRATORS, FACULTY CLASSIFIED TO MAKE WHO WE ARE.
OH. A BIG THANK THANKS FOR DOCTOR LINH WAYNE AND THE PTA COMMITTEE FOR ARRANGING NUMEROUS CULTURAL EVENTS FOR CELEBRATE A MONTH, INCLUDING THE FIRST ASIAN STUDENT GRADUATION.
I WAS INVITED TO THE EVENT AND HAD A CHANCE TO CHAT WITH STUDENTS AND PARENTS.
[02:10:07]
THEY TRULY APPRECIATE THIS SPECIAL GRADUATION CEREMONY DEDICATED FOR ASIAN STUDENTS.THANK YOU. TRUSTEE LIU TRUSTEE PACHECO.
I LIKE TRUSTEE LEWIS SAID I WENT TO THE PRAYER BREAKFAST FOR LA LA MIRADA MAYOR'S PRAYER BREAKFAST.
I ALSO ATTENDED THE KIWANIS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION THAT WE HAVE ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS THAT WE GIVE TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN DOWNEY THAT ARE DESERVING, AND SOME OF THEM ACTUALLY ARE COMING HERE.
SO THEY AS PART OF THEIR WHEN WE GIVE THEM THE SCHOLARSHIP, THEY ALSO TELL US WHAT THEIR CAREER PATH WILL BE, AND THEY TELL US ALSO WHERE THEY WILL BE ATTENDING.
IT WAS THAT PRETTY MUCH IT FOR ME.
SORRY FOR BEING LATE. I JUST ARRIVED FROM SACRAMENTO WHERE JUST HAD A REALLY LONG DAY ADVOCATING FOR OUR NEW TRANSIT LINE THAT WILL BE COMING TO SERVE CERRITOS COLLEGE STUDENTS, THE SOUTHEAST GATEWAY LINE AND EVERY SINGLE MEETING WE WENT WITH SUPERVISOR HAHN AND SOME OF OUR CITY ELECTED OFFICIALS.
SO IT'S A BIG BULLET POINT, SO MAY NEED FOR YOU TO COME WITH ME TO THE NEXT ONE, BECAUSE THAT WAS A VERY, VERY BIG COMPONENT OF OR LEGISLATORS WERE VERY INTERESTED IN IS THE WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT ASPECT AND ESPECIALLY AS IT RELATES TO TRAINING WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION FIELDS AND LABOR.
SO THAT WAS A REALLY, REALLY GOOD.
I ATTENDED A COUPLE OF THINGS SINCE THE LAST MEETING.
THE, THE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP AWARD CEREMONY AGAIN WAS VERY WELL PUT TOGETHER.
IT WAS VERY QUICK. IT WAS LIKE A, LIKE A SPEED VERSION OF THE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP.
SO I WANTED TO JUST ACKNOWLEDGE ALL THE GREAT WORK THAT THE FOUNDATION IS DOING.
I ALSO WENT TO THE CERRITOS COLLEGE BASEBALL GAME THIS PAST SATURDAY.
WE HAVE A VERY EXCELLENT TEAM, WONDERFUL YOUNG MEN.
SO I JUST WANTED TO ACKNOWLEDGE EVERYBODY.
ALL THE COACHING STAFF AND ALL OF OUR PLAYERS, I'M PRETTY SURE WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A LOT WHO ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO PLAY, BECAUSE WE HAVE SOME REALLY GOOD BASEBALL PLAYERS THIS YEAR. SO I WANTED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT.
ALSO, I WENT TO THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD AND THE CITY OF THE ROTARY CLUBS, THE PAN AMERICAN ASSOCIATION.
AND THIS WEEKEND IS THE BIG THE BIG CANNON FIESTA.
SO AGAIN, ANOTHER BIG EVENT IN LAKEWOOD.
AND I ALSO THIS PAST WEEKEND COMPLETED MY FOUR YEAR COMMITMENT.
I THINK IT'S FOUR YEAR COMMITMENT ON THE LEAGUE BOARD, THE LEAGUE BOARD AND THE TRUSTEE BOARD.
IT WAS SO WONDERFUL TO THINK THAT THAT IS NOT SOMETHING I HAVE TO DO ANYMORE.
BUT IT WAS IT WAS FOUR YEARS TO ACTUALLY KNOW.
FIVE YEARS. NOW THAT I'M THINKING ABOUT IT, FIVE YEARS IN A LEADERSHIP ROLE.
WE WERE ABLE TO TRANSITION TO DOCTOR PHAROS, TRANSITIONING VERY SOON AS WELL TOO.
BUT THE THE CONFERENCE CONCLUDED WITH AN EXCELLENT PANEL ON THE NURSING ON AB 885, THE SENATOR ROTH BILL, DO WE TALK ABOUT THAT TODAY? OKAY.
WELL, I DON'T KNOW ANY OF THE DETAILS, BUT WHY DON'T YOU JUST ACKNOWLEDGE ANDREA? BECAUSE ANDREA IS REALLY THE EXPERT.
SHE'S BEEN WORKING ON THIS WITH OUR WITH OUR NURSING DEAN.
YES, YES, HEALTH OCCUPATIONS DEAN.
AND REALLY, THERE IS JUST AN AMAZING AMOUNT OF SUPPORT AND RESEARCH AND SO MANY REASONS WHY OFFERING A BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN NURSING MAKES SENSE AT THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE LEVEL.
I THINK EVERYONE'S FAMILIAR WITH THE BILL.
IT WOULD ALLOW 15 DIFFERENT COLLEGES TO BE ABLE TO PILOT A BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN NURSING.
[02:15:05]
AND WE ARE REALLY HOPING THAT CERRITOS COLLEGE IS ONE OF THEM FOR MANY REASONS.BUT I REALLY LIKED THE PRESENTATION, AND I THINK THE REALLY KIND OF HIT HOME TO ME WAS JUST THE THE PURE AMOUNT OF NURSES IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA WHO WERE EDUCATED THROUGH PRIVATE EDUCATION.
AND AGAIN, THERE'S SUCH A TREMENDOUS NEED, WE ALL KNOW TO CSU'S OR IMPACT IMPACTED.
WE HAVE SOME REALLY STRONG OPPOSITION.
AND WE I TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOPEFULLY HAVING OUR FACULTY.
I'M NOT SURE LYNN DID THAT, SOMETHING THAT CCF WOULD BE ABLE TO LEND THEIR SUPPORT BEHIND THIS BILL.
IT IS OPPOSED BY THE THE FACULTY ASSOCIATION ASSOCIATION AT THE CSU'S.
I THINK ANDREA TOLD US THAT IT PASSED OUT OF THE POLICY COMMITTEE.
I DON'T KNOW, PHILIPPE WOULD AGREE WITH THAT.
BUT BUT THEY'RE REALLY HOPING TO KIND OF KEEP THIS BILL MOVING.
AND WE ACTUALLY HAVE TWO MEMBERS OF OUR DELEGATION WHO ARE REALLY, REALLY KEY ON THIS.
SO AGAIN, MAYBE WE COULD HAVE AN UPDATE ON THAT NEXT TIME.
DOCTOR FIERRO. HOPEFULLY IT'S STILL MOVING AND IT'S TIMELY, BUT I THINK IT JUST HAS A HUGE OPPORTUNITY TO REALLY SERVE STUDENTS HERE WHERE THEY LIVE, AND THEN EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY, WHERE HOPEFULLY THEY STAY IN SURF.
AND THAT WAS ANOTHER THING TOO, IS THEY TALKED ABOUT JUST, YOU KNOW, HOW OUR POPULATION IN CALIFORNIA IS GETTING OLDER AND THAT WE'RE GOING TO NEED MORE PEOPLE TO BE WORKING IN HEALTH CARE, AND WE NEED MORE NURSES TO PROVIDE HEALTH CARE SERVICES.
AND SO, YEAH, IT WAS JUST A REALLY GOOD CLOSING SESSION AGAIN.
SO I JUST WANTED TO THANK EVERYBODY AT THE COLLEGE WHO'S WORKING ON THAT.
THANKS AGAIN FOR THE UPDATES TODAY ON THE BUDGET AND ON THE STUDENT FIRST FRAMEWORK.
FOR MY PART, I HAD I WAS AT THE COMMUNITY FAMILY GUIDANCE CENTER FUNDRAISER DINNER, WHICH I THINK WAS A REALLY WITH SPEAKER ANTHONY RENDON, ACTUALLY, AND AND I AND I THOUGHT IT WAS A REALLY APROPOS FOR OUR CONVERSATION TODAY ON MENTAL HEALTH. AND THE WAY THAT REALLY OUR, OUR COMMUNITY HAS SOME OF THE STRONGEST COMMUNITY BONDS YOU KNOW, OUT OF ANY, ANY COMMUNITY, WHICH GIVES US A LEG UP IN CERTAIN WAYS, BUT WE REALLY HAVE A LIMITED RESOURCES IN MANY OTHER WAYS TO ADDRESS THOSE TYPES OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.
AND, AND SO REALLY LOOKING AT AN ALL HANDS ON DECK APPROACH IS, IS REALLY PREFERRED.
AND SO YEAH, MUCH APPRECIATED BY THE, BY THE WORK THAT WE TALKED ABOUT HERE TODAY AND, AND TYING TO TYING TO THE OTHER ELEMENTS THAT ARE AT FOOT IN OUR, IN OUR COMMUNITY.
DOCTOR FERRO, ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO ADD TO YOUR REPORT? NO. OKAY.
AND THAT'S THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS THAT WILL BE GETTING CERTIFICATES NEXT WEEK.
AND CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE, THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY AND ALL THE STUDENTS.
THAT'S VERY THAT'S SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF.
AND AND THANK YOU, DOCTOR FIERRO, FOR LEADING THE WAY AND REALLY JUST TAKING US TO THE NEXT LEVEL EVERY YEAR AND LOOKING FORWARD FOR THE STUDENT FIRST FRAMEWORK TO JUST TAKE US TO THAT NEXT LEVEL AS WELL.
SO WITH THAT OUR CLOSED SESSION IS 7.01 CONFERENCE WITH LABOR NEGOTIATIONS.
