[1.02 Pledge of Allegiance]

PLEASE? PLACE YOUR RIGHT HAND OVER YOUR HEART.

READY? BEGIN.

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS.

ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.

DOES ANYONE WANT TO ORGANIZE THE AGENDA? HEARING NONE, WE WILL MOVE ON TO COMMENTS FROM THE AUDIENCE.

[1.04 Comments from the Audience]

AND WE DO HAVE ONE PERSON ASK PAST PAST PRESIDENT, VICE PRESIDENT JOSE HERNANDEZ.

TEST ONE. TWO. PERFECT.

HELLO, EVERYONE.

GREETINGS TO ALL BOARD OF TRUSTEES, MEMBERS OF THE AUDIENCE AND EVERYONE WHO GETS TO HEAR MY VOICE.

YES, I'M BACK AGAIN.

BUT THIS TIME IS ACTUALLY FOR A GOOD CAUSE.

WELL, THEY'RE ALL GOOD CAUSES.

AND THIS OCCASION, TO START OFF, I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO ALL THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEMBERS FOR EVERYTHING THAT YOU GUYS DO.

IT'S A LOT OF WORK BEING, BEING A THE OCC VICE PRESIDENT HAS MADE ME REALIZE THAT THERE'S A LOT MORE WORK THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE.

SO I COMMEND YOU ALL FOR ALL YOUR TIRELESS EFFORTS, SACRIFICES TO BE HERE, LISTENING TO ALL OF US.

SO FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART, I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO YOU ALL.

JUST WANTED TO REPORT TODAY THAT ASIC HAS UNANIMOUSLY PASSED AS A JOINT RESOLUTION TO INCREASE THE STUDENT HEALTH FEE, TO BE ABLE TO HELP OUT OUR STUDENT SERVICES FROM $19 TO $26, TO BE ON PAR WITH THE REST OF THE OTHER COMMUNITY COLLEGES, BEING THAT WE OFFER A LOT MORE SERVICES THAN SOME OF THE OTHER COLLEGES THAT ARE CHARGING THE SAME AMOUNT.

SO I JUST WANTED TO BRING THAT UP TO YOUR GUYS'S ATTENTION THAT EHMCKE HAS PASSED AS THE STANCE OF SUPPORT TO INCREASE THE FEE TO HELP OUT OUR STUDENT SERVICES.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ONCE AGAIN FOR EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO.

AND I WISH YOU ALL A WONDERFUL REST OF YOUR EVENING.

THANK YOU. NEXT IS REPORTS AND COMMENTS FROM

[1.05 Reports and Comments from Constituent Groups]

CONSTITUENT GROUPS.

I DON'T KNOW IF DENNIS.

DOCTOR WONG. OKAY, BECAUSE I DON'T SEE OKAY, I GOT IT.

ALL RIGHT. GOOD EVENING.

TRUSTEES. I'M HERE TO ENSURE THAT WE DO NOT MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH CARE TO PART TIME FACULTY AT ZERO COST TO THE DISTRICT. OUR NEIGHBORING DISTRICT, NORTH ORANGE COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT AND ACCD, HAS RECENTLY RENEWED THEIR MOU ON PART TIME HEALTH CARE, ALLOWING ELIGIBLE PART TIME FACULTY TO ACCESS CALPERS INSURANCE THROUGH JULY 2025.

GIVEN THE STATE'S ANTICIPATED 58 BILLION OR 73 DEFICIT, DEPENDING ON WHO YOU ASK, PART TIME HEALTH CARE FUNDING WILL LIKELY REMAIN UNCERTAIN.

THERE HAVE BEEN DISCUSSIONS ABOUT THE STATE'S REPURPOSING UNSPENT PART TIME HEALTH CARE FUNDS TO ADDRESS THE DEFICIT.

BOTH CCF AND OUR STATE UNION, UNION CFT, HAVE ACCESS TO LOBBYISTS WHO CAN ADVOCATE FOR ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR OUR DISTRICT, WITH FULL IMPLEMENTATION BEGINNING IN THE NEW FISCAL YEAR.

CCF HAS BEEN ADVOCATING FOR COMPREHENSIVE PART TIME HEALTH CARE SINCE SEPTEMBER OF 2023.

UNFORTUNATELY, THE DISTRICT MISSED THE OPPORTUNITY TO IMPLEMENT 50% PART TIME HEALTH CARE FOR THE FALL 2023 SEMESTER DUE TO THE FAILURE TO EXTEND THE PILOT AND HENCE MOU.

WE CANNOT AFFORD TO WAIT ANY LONGER AND RISK MISSING OUT ON 100% REIMBURSEMENT.

[00:05:07]

AGAIN, IF THE DISTRICT DESIRES FULL REIMBURSEMENT FOR THIS FISCAL YEAR, IT MUST COMMIT TO OFFER COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH CARE FOR PART TIME FACULTY BEFORE FISCAL YEAR CONCLUDES.

OUR DISTRICT IS ELIGIBLE FOR 100% REIMBURSEMENT ONCE ALL FOUR ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS ARE MET.

WE MUST SIGN THE MOU NOW, FOLLOWED BY CALPERS RESOLUTIONS BEFORE THE FISCAL YEAR CONCLUDES.

CCSF IS WILLING AND ABLE TO WORK WITH THE DISTRICT TO MAKE PART TIME HEALTH CARE COVERAGE A REALITY FOR OUR PART TIME COLLEAGUES.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

COULD I ALSO NOW HAVE LINDA LOPEZ? SHE'S NOT HERE EITHER.

OKAY. SO THEN WE'RE GOING TO BE MOVING ON TO INSTITUTIONAL PRESENTATIONS.

[2.01 Institutional Presentation: State Budget Update]

THE STATE BUDGET UPDATE.

ALL RIGHT. GOOD EVENING.

TRUSTEES, MEMBER OF THE AUDIENCE.

I AM GOING TO GIVE YOU A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF WHAT IS HAPPENING AT THE STATE WITH THE BUDGET.

AND, AND I GUESS SOME PERSPECTIVE BASED ON CONVERSATIONS WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE, WITH THE LEGISLATIVE ANALYST'S OFFICE AND SOME OF THE NEW DEVELOPMENTS THAT TOOK PLACE BETWEEN JUST.

YEAH. BETWEEN YESTERDAY AND TODAY.

SO I WILL GIVE YOU TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, WHAT IS CURRENTLY HAPPENING.

BUT PLEASE DO UNDERSTAND THAT THE SITUATION IS VERY FLUID.

AND BETWEEN YESTERDAY AND TODAY, A FEW THINGS CHANGE.

AND I'M ASSUMING WITHIN THE NEXT FEW DAYS MORE THINGS WILL CONTINUE TO CHANGE, SINCE NOW IT SEEMS TO BE AN URGENCY OF MAKING SOME EARLY DECISIONS ON THE BUDGET.

SO WE HAVE A PROBLEM.

AND JUST LIKE DOCTOR WANG STATED, DEPENDING ON WHO YOU ASK, THAT THERE ARE TWO ANSWERS OF WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THE BUDGET.

IF YOU ASK THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE AND THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE, IT COULD BE ANYWHERE BETWEEN $37 MILLION AND $57 BILLION.

AND IF YOU ASK THE LAO, IT COULD BE $73 BILLION.

I DO THINK THE REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NO IS 38 BILLION OR 77.

THAT IS A LOT OF BILLIONS TO TRY TO FIND.

SO THE TRUTH IS SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN.

SO THE PROJECTED SHORTFALL THAT WE SHOULD BE PREPARED TO DEAL WITH, IN MY OPINION, IS THE LEGISLATIVE ANALYST'S OFFICE.

I AM NOT SAYING THAT THAT IS WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN.

WHAT I'M SAYING IS THAT WE SHOULD PREPARE FOR SOMETHING LIKE THAT IN THE EVENT THAT THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS, BUT TRY TO SUPPORT WHAT IS BEING PROPOSED FOR THE GOVERNOR, WHICH IS A LITTLE SOFTER ON ITS APPROACH OF HOW TO DEAL WITH THE WITH THE WITH THE BUDGET. BESIDES THE $73 BILLION DEFICIT PREDICTED BY THE LEGISLATIVE ANALYST'S OFFICE.

THEY ARE ALSO ESTIMATING THAT FOR THE NEXT THREE YEARS, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE ABOUT $30 BILLION OR SO ON DEFICITS.

SO THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE A DONE DEAL.

SITUATION IN WHICH THEY FIND THE RESOURCES IS GOING TO TAKE ABOUT THREE YEARS FOR FOR THEIR BUDGETS TO LEVEL OUT AGAIN.

NOW TODAY, FOR INSTANCE, I WAS ASKED HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT WE ARE IN THIS SITUATION? THAT IS WORSE THAN 2008 AND 2009.

IT IS NOT NECESSARILY WORSE BECAUSE THE STATE HAS A LOT OF CASH IN HAND.

THE PROBLEM IS THAT WE ARE OVERSPEND.

SO THEY WILL HAVE TO FIGURE OUT A WAY TO CLOSE THE GAP BETWEEN WHAT WE'RE SPENDING, WHAT IT IS COMMITTED, AND WHAT IS ACTUALLY AVAILABLE.

THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE PROPOSED A BUDGET WITH A SHORTFALL OF $37.9 BILLION, WITH A FEW SOLUTIONS.

NOW, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHAT THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE AND THE LEGISLATIVE ANALYST'S OFFICE PUT FORWARD IS THAT THE SOLUTIONS OF THE

[00:10:04]

DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE ARE SOFTENING THE APPROACH, AND THEY CONSIDER THE LONG TERM IMPLICATIONS ON EDUCATION IF THEY'RE GOING TO MAKE SIGNIFICANT CUTS. THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE SEEMED TO BE JUST SIMPLY LOOKING AT HOW TO RECOUP ALL THOSE DOLLARS.

AND SOME OF THEIR SOLUTIONS GO AS FAR AS SAYING WE NEED TO ELIMINATE ATHLETICS FROM ALL AREAS.

OBVIOUSLY, THAT IS SOMETHING INCREDIBLY UNREALISTIC TO TO DO AT THIS PARTICULAR POINT.

SO THE SOLUTION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE IS TO BRING OUT $13 BILLION FROM THE RESERVES, REDUCE ONE TIME EXPENDITURES BY $8.5 BILLION.

WHAT THAT MEANS FOR US IS ANY MONEY THAT ISN'T SPENT AT THE STATE LEVEL, THEY WILL POTENTIALLY TRY TO CLAW IT BACK TO ESSENTIALLY RECOUP SOME OF THOSE DOLLARS AND BRING SOME SAVINGS.

AND THAT IS SOMETHING THAT IS CALLED PROP 98.

IT HAS ABOUT $8 BILLION OR SO WHICH THEY'RE TRYING TO MANAGE IN A DIFFERENT SITUATION OVER A PERIOD OF THREE YEARS, WHICH I'LL EXPLAIN IN A MINUTE.

THERE IS ANOTHER $5.5 BILLION THAT THEY PLAN TO RECOVER BY SPREADING THE EXPENDITURE OVER A THREE YEAR PERIOD, UNDER THE HOPE THAT THE BUDGET RECOVERS AND THEY ARE ABLE TO LEVEL THE PLANE, IF YOU WILL, AT THE END OF THE THIRD YEAR AND 5.5 BILLION IN BORROWING AND DEFERRALS.

NOW, AS YOU CAN SEE THERE, THERE ARE NOT NECESSARILY CUTS TO THE BUDGET, JUST SIMPLY CLAWING BACK SOME OF THE EXPENDITURES.

THE WERE BUDGET LAST YEAR, BUT EITHER THE MONEY WAS NOT DELIVERED TO THE INSTITUTIONS, OR THE MONEY WAS NOT SPENT BY THE INSTITUTIONS.

THEY WILL TRY TO TO RECOVER THAT MONEY.

NOW, WHY DO I LIKE THIS PLAN BETTER? ONE IS ONLY 37.9 BILLION RATHER THAN 70 BILLION PLUS TWO.

IT PROPOSES SOLUTIONS THAT COULD ACTUALLY HELP DISTRICTS, K-12 AND OTHER STATE ENTITY AGENCIES TO NAVIGATE A TOUGH FINANCIAL SITUATION.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, DOES NOT CUT OUR BUDGET.

EVEN THOUGH WE MAY GET DELAYS ON PAYMENTS AND DEFERRALS, GETTING DELAYS ON PAYMENTS AND DEFERRALS FOR US IS THE THE BEST OF THE WORST SCENARIOS. WHY? BECAUSE EVENTUALLY THE STATE WILL PAY US, WE WILL RECOVER OUR INVESTMENT AND WE WILL PICK UP WHERE WE LEFT, MEANING THAT WE WON'T HAVE TO START BACK WHERE THE CUT WAS DONE.

SO IF WE GET, LET'S SAY, A BUDGET CUT OF 10%, WE WILL HAVE TO RECOVER THE 10% BEFORE WE CAN GROW.

IN THE CASE OF THE DEFERRALS, ONCE THERE IS MONEY TO FOR GROWTH, WE WILL BEGIN AT THE SAME POINT WHERE WE CURRENTLY ARE NOW. THE DEFERRALS COULD BE MULTI-YEAR ISSUES.

YOU CAN ONLY HAVE DEFERRALS ONE DEFERRAL EVERY YEAR, RIGHT.

SO YOU WILL EXERCISE THE DEFERRAL THAT THE STATE WILL THEN HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO PAY US THE MONEY OR THAT WILL BE ON THE NEXT FISCAL YEAR.

SO LET'S SAY WE HAVE THE FEDERALS ON 2425.

THEY WILL HAVE TO PAY US WITHIN THE FIRST FEW MONTHS OF 2526.

THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT THEY WILL NO ISSUE NEW DEFERRALS ON THE SUBSEQUENT YEARS UNTIL THEY LEVEL THE AMOUNT OF EXPENDITURES.

BUT ALL IN ALL, THAT ISN'T NECESSARILY AS BAD AS IT COULD BE.

OH, THERE IS SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE SEEN PROBABLY IN THE NEWS OR IF YOU'RE FOLLOWING ANYTHING ON THE BUDGET SOME PEOPLE CALL THE PROPAGANDA MANEUVER, SOME CALL IT THE NOVEL APPROACH OF FUNDING PROP 98.

I'M GOING TO TRY TO MAKE IT AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE.

WE KNOW THE PROP 98 IS FOR K-12, AND COMMUNITY COLLEGES GET FUNDED.

LAST YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE TAX DELAYS AND OVERESTIMATION ON REVENUE, THE STATE ALLOCATED ABOUT $8 BILLION EXTRA TO PROP 98, WHICH WE SHOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN.

RATHER THAN TAKING THE MONEY BACK AND PUT US IN A TOUGH FINANCIAL SITUATION AT THIS PARTICULAR POINT.

THE GOVERNOR AND THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE ARE PROPOSING THAT WE DON'T TAKE THE MONEY BACK, AND THAT WE SPREAD THE $8 BILLION ON PAYMENTS OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS.

SO $1.8 BILLION EVERY YEAR FROM THE GENERAL FUND.

IN OTHER WORDS, DO A SELF LOAN OF MONEY THAT WAS GIVEN TO PROP 98 LAST YEAR FROM FUTURE MONEY THAT WILL GET IN THE GENERAL FUND OVER THE

[00:15:07]

NEXT FIVE YEARS.

THAT IS COMPLICATED ONE, BECAUSE THERE ARE SOME CONCEPTS THAT IT SAYS THAT IS NOT LEGAL TO DO THAT.

THAT IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL FOR A LEGISLATURE.

LEGISLATION TO COMMIT ANOTHER LEGISLATION TO THIS TYPE OF DEBT.

OTHERS SAID THAT THE LEGISLATION MAY NOT SUPPORT THE GOVERNOR ON THIS, BECAUSE THIS WILL REQUIRE LEGISLATIVE ACTION AND A TRAILER BILL THAT CAN ONLY BE ISSUED BY THE LEGISLATORS. IN EITHER SITUATION, THIS IS NOT NECESSARILY A BAD DEAL FOR US BECAUSE IT MEANS THAT WE GET TO KEEP OUR CURRENT LEVEL OF FUNDING.

IT IS PROBLEMATIC FOR THE STATE AS A WHOLE, BECAUSE THIS WILL ADD $8.8 BILLION DEFICIT EVERY YEAR FOR THE NEXT FIVE, UNLESS THE STATE REVENUES INCREASE ENOUGH TO COVER THIS AND WHATEVER THE SUBSEQUENT EXPENSES ARE.

BUT IN PRACTICALITY, TODAY, IF THE BUDGET WAS ADOPTED, THIS IS ACTUALLY A GOOD DEAL FOR THE COLLEGES AND FOR THE K-12.

I OVERSIMPLIFIED THIS, BUT ESSENTIALLY THIS IS MONEY THAT DOES NOT EXIST YET, AND THE WAY THAT THEY'RE TRYING TO DO IT IS BY COUNTING ON THE REVENUES OF SUBSEQUENT YEARS AND ADDING THE DIFFERENCE TO THE GENERAL FUND OVER THE NEXT FIVE.

SO THE SENATE PROPOSED LAST THURSDAY SOMETHING THAT IS CALLED SHRINK THE SHORTFALL AND LARGELY SUPPORTS THE GOVERNOR'S BUDGET.

BUT WHAT THEY'RE TRYING TO SAY IS THAT WE HAVE TO DO IT NOW, RATHER THAN WAITING UNTIL THE ADOPTION OF THE JUNE BUDGET, THAT WE SHOULD START SHRINKING THE SHORTFALL RIGHT AWAY WITH THIS SPECIFIC SOLUTION.

WHAT THEY'RE TRYING TO DO IS CAPTURE ABOUT $3.5 BILLION ON RESOURCES RIGHT AWAY, AND THEY HAVE FIVE AREAS IN WHICH THEY ARE HOPING TO TAKE THE MONEY FROM EDUCATION, RESOURCES, ENERGY, HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, GENERAL GOVERNMENT, PUBLIC SAFETY, AND TRANSPORTATION.

NOW EDUCATION.

AS OF TODAY, DOES NOT, AT LEAST FROM THIS PARTICULAR PRESENTATION FROM THE SENATE AS OF TODAY, DOES NOT INCLUDE K-12 FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGES, THE BUDGET CUTS THAT ARE IN EDUCATION ARE ALL SECTORS BUT K-12 AND COMMUNITY COLLEGES.

NOW, DON'T BE THINKING THAT THIS IS BECAUSE THE LEGISLATION AND EVERYONE ELSE LOVES LOVE COMMUNITY COLLEGES.

ALTHOUGH WE RECEIVE A LOT OF LOVE FROM THE LEGISLATION, THIS IS BECAUSE WE'RE TIED TO THE K-12.

SO THE LEGISLATORS TAKE A LITTLE MORE OF A CAUTIOUS APPROACH BEFORE THEY DECIDE TO CUT K-12.

SO IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE, IT'S VERY, VERY, VERY GOOD FOR US TO BE CONNECTED TO THE FORMULA IN K-12 AS IT RELATES WITH THE SPLIT OF PROP 98, BECAUSE IT'S GOING TO SLOW DOWN ANY BUDGET CUTS THAT WE COULD POTENTIALLY EXPERIENCE.

IN FACT, IT MAY EVEN DELAY SOME OF THOSE CUTS UNTIL NEXT YEAR.

BUT IT'S A BIT TOO EARLY TO TO TO ASSUME THAT.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR CERRITOS COLLEGE? AS OF RIGHT NOW ON P ONE, WE HAVE $5.2 MILLION ON DEFICIT.

NOW, EVERY YEAR IN P1, WE GET SOME SORT OF DEFICIT.

THIS YEAR IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT.

IT'S A LITTLE BIT HIGHER OF WHAT TRADITIONALLY IS.

BUT THERE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT WE HAVE GOING FOR US.

THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT THE COST OF REAL ESTATE AND THE REVENUES ON REAL ESTATE ARE GOING TO DECLINE IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS.

SO BY THE TIME ALL THIS IS SAID AND DONE, IT IS A VERY, VERY GOOD CHANCE THE WE WILL ONLY HAVE ABOUT ONE, MAYBE $1.5 MILLION DEFICIT, WHICH IS ACTUALLY GOOD NEWS.

NOW, IF THIS IS NOT THE CASE, WE ARE ALREADY PREPARING AND MAKING THE NECESSARY ADJUSTMENTS TO BE ABLE TO COVER THE $5.2 MILLION WITHOUT USING THE RESERVES BY THE END OF THE YEAR.

IN THE NEXT MONTH AND A HALF OR TWO, BY THE TIME THE MAY REVISE HIS RELEASE, HOPEFULLY BY MAY 14TH, WE WILL KNOW IF WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO IMPLEMENT ADDITIONAL MANEUVERS TO USE THE STATE TERM TO TO BE ABLE TO CLOSE THIS GAP.

BUT AT THIS PARTICULAR POINT, WE FEEL VERY COMFORTABLE THAT WE CAN ABSORB THAT DEFICIT.

BUT THE REALITY IS THAT BASED ON A CONVERSATION THAT I WAS ABLE TO HAVE ON FRIDAY WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE AND SOMEONE FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE, THAT THIS DEFICIT WILL BE MAYBE 1% RATHER THAN 3.3%.

[00:20:02]

SO SO IT'S GOING TO BE ABOUT 1.4 $1.6 MILLION FOR US AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER, IF THEY CANNOT CLOSE THE ENTIRETY AT THE STATE LEVEL.

HOWEVER, AGAIN, ONCE AGAIN, WE ARE PREPARED TO ABSORB EVEN THE 5.2.

SO YOU SHOULD NOT WORRY AT THIS PARTICULAR TIME TO DO THAT.

WE OBVIOUSLY ARE TAKING BACK SOME OF THE UNNECESSARY, NOT UNNECESSARY, BUT NOT 100% INDISPENSABLE EXPENDITURES THAT WE THAT WE HAVE SOME OF THE MONEY THAT WE HAVE IN SPAIN AND THAT WE ARE UNLIKELY TO SPEND BEFORE JUNE 30TH, WE'RE TAKING THOSE MONIES BACK AND THE HIRING FREEZE THE ALL OF US ARE AWARE OF, AT LEAST UNTIL THE MAY REVISE TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT WE ARE GOING TO BE IN A GOOD POSITION TO HIRE. THAT, COUPLED WITH OTHER SAVINGS, WILL GET US VERY, VERY CLOSE TO THE 5.2 IN THE WORST CASE SCENARIO.

BUT FOR SURE WE WILL BE ABLE, BY DOING THESE THINGS, TO CLOSE THE 1% DEFICIT THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE SPOKE OF ON FRIDAY.

MAY REVISE IS GOING TO BE KEY FOR US BECAUSE AT THAT TIME, WE WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE BETTER PROJECTIONS FOR THE 2425.

I DON'T NECESSARILY LIKE TO BE WRONG, BUT THIS IS ONE OF THESE CASES IN WHICH I TRULY WANT TO BE WRONG ON MY PROJECTIONS.

BECAUSE IF WE ARE WRONG BY MAY, REVISE, OR MAYBE JUNE, WE WILL BE BACK IN BUSINESS.

GO BACK TO DO YOUR THING AND DO JUST FINE.

BUT I I PREFER US TO TAKE A MORE CAUTIOUS APPROACH UNTIL WE KNOW MORE HEADING INTO THE MAY REVISE, PARTICULARLY BASED ON THE SIGNIFICANT DISCREPANCY BETWEEN THE BODY THAT WAS PRESENTED BY THE GOVERNOR AND THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE AND THE BUDGET THAT WAS PRESENTED BY THE LEGISLATIVE ANALYST'S OFFICE.

SO SO AGAIN, I'M SHARING THESE NOT BECAUSE I WANT US TO BE CONCERNED RIGHT AWAY, BUT I WANT US TO BE PREPARED IN THE EVENT THAT WE HAVE TO MAKE A DIFFERENT ADDITIONAL MOVEMENTS TO CLOSE THE GAP, WE ARE GOING TO DO EVERYTHING AS WE CAN TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CAN CLOSE THIS INITIAL SHORTFALL ON ON REVENUE WITHOUT TOUCHING THE RESERVES AND ANYTHING WE CAN TO SPEND THE LEAST AS POSSIBLE ON THE FIRST YEAR OF RESERVES.

AND THE REASON TO DO THAT IS NOT BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO SPEND THE RESERVES.

IT'S BECAUSE IF THIS IS A THREE YEAR PROCESS, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE PLAN OUT THE RESERVES FOR THREE YEARS BASED ON EXPENDITURES RATHER THAN ONE.

YOU MAY BE ASKING WHY OUR BURNING RATE IS ABOUT 14.5, $14.7 MILLION EVERY MONTH.

AND I THINK OUR RESERVES ARE SOMEWHERE IN THE $40 MILLION OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT, WHICH IS LESS THAN THREE FULL MONTHS OF EXPENDITURES.

SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE PACE OURSELVES.

WE FEEL THAT WE ARE IN A GOOD FINANCIAL SITUATION, BUT THAT JUST SIMPLY REQUIRES MORE STRATEGIC PLANNING AS WE MOVE FORWARD INTO THE END OF THE REVENUE.

SO NOW WHAT? THE FIRST THING IS, PLEASE DO NOT PANIC.

I KEEP TALKING ABOUT THE BUDGET BECAUSE I JUST WANT US TO BE INFORMED.

BUT I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT PANICKING.

I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT CRAZY ACTIONS AT THIS PARTICULAR TIME.

WE ARE BEING CAUTIOUS AND WE ARE BEING VERY PRUDENT AS WE MOVE FORWARD.

BUT IT'S ONLY TO KEEP EVERYONE INFORMED RATHER THAN TO CREATE ANY TYPE OF PANIC.

TWO. WE HAVE TIME TO CORRECT.

THAT'S WHY WE STARTED EARLY.

GENERALLY IN EDUCATION AND WHEN YOU ARE CONNECTED TO THE K-12, LEGISLATORS TEND TO SLOW ANY TYPE OF BUDGET CUTS TO K-12 QUITE A BIT VERSUS HIGHER ED.

SO WE'RE GOING TO BENEFIT THROUGH THE SLOW APPROACH THAT THEY'RE GOING TO TAKE ON K-12, WHICH IS GOING TO GIVE US A MUCH BETTER 2425. I'M NOT SAYING WE'RE GOING TO GROWTH OR THAT WE'RE GOING TO SEE NEW MONEY, BUT I'M SAYING THAT IT'S GOING TO BE LIKELY LESS COMPLICATED THAN THE $77 BILLION PICTURE THAT LEO IS SAYING IT'S GOING TO BE THE ENTIRE TIME THAT WAY.

NO, WE'RE PROBABLY GOING TO HAVE TO ADJUST FOR THE OUTGOING YEARS, BUT IT'S IMPORTANT TO START EARLY.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST THERE SEEMS TO BE A SENSE OF URGENCY TO CLOSE BETWEEN 12 TO $18 BILLION PRIOR TO THE MAY REVISE.

[00:25:02]

SO HOW DO I KNOW? IT'S A SENSE OF URGENCY.

YOU HARDLY EVER SEE THE GOVERNOR GOING INTO THE CAPITAL BUILDING.

AND HE HAS BEEN THERE YESTERDAY AND TODAY FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME MEETING WITH THE LEADERSHIP.

AND THEY'RE TRYING TO FIND A SOLUTION IN WHICH THEY AGREE ON HOW TO IMPLEMENT EARLY BUDGET ACTION.

THE RANGES BETWEEN 12 AND $18 BILLION, WHICH ESSENTIALLY WILL LEAVE IF THE GOVERNOR IS CORRECT, ABOUT $20 BILLION TO CLOSE BY MAY OR JUNE. AND IF THE HALO IS CORRECT, OBVIOUSLY ANOTHER $60 BILLION TO FIND, BUT I THINK IT'S SOMEWHAT IN BETWEEN. SO IT IS LIKELY THAT IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS THIS CONTINUED TO CHANGE, AND WE MAY SEE SOME ADDITIONAL MOVES FROM THE STATE TO TRY TO GET AHEAD OF THE SHORTFALL.

IN MY YEARS HERE GOING TO SACRAMENTO, I THINK THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT I SEE THEM TRYING TO TAKE EARLY ACTION ON THE BUDGET.

SO OBVIOUSLY THEY ARE GETTING A BIT CONCERNED ON THE SIDE OF THE REVENUES.

THE INTERESTING PART IS THE GOVERNOR ANNOUNCED, BUT THEN NEITHER THE PRO TEM OR THE ASSEMBLY FOLLOW THE ANNOUNCEMENT, WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THEY AGREE THAT THEY WANT TO CLOSE THE GAP, BUT THEY HAVE NOT AGREE.

HOW. SO MY GUESS IS THERE WILL BE ADDITIONAL MEETINGS GOING FORWARD.

BUT ONCE AGAIN THIS IS PURELY TO KEEP YOU INFORMED.

PLEASE DO NOT PANIC.

WE ARE WELL POSITIONED TO BE ABLE TO NAVIGATE THIS GOING FORWARD AND WE'RE TAKING ACTION EARLY SO WE ARE PREPARED AND NOT SCRAMBLING IN THE TAIL END OF THIS.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, I'LL BE HAPPY TO ANSWER THEM.

ANYONE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? SEEING YEP I DO.

YES, I'M VERY INTERESTED IN THIS.

I KNOW THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT FOR A VERY LONG TIME.

QUICK CLARIFICATION.

SO THE MAY REVISE WILL BE THE FINAL NUMBERS.

OR IS THIS IS THIS THE FINAL? NO. THEY MAY REVISE.

IS THE THE FINAL BUDGET THAT THE GOVERNOR WILL PROPOSE.

BUT THE CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN THE GOVERNOR, THE SENATE PRO TEM, AND THE SPEAKER OF THE ASSEMBLY WILL BEGIN. AND WHAT THEY DO THERE IS NEGOTIATE THINGS THEY MAY HAVE A STRONG FEELINGS ABOUT AND SWITCH BITS AND PIECES UNTIL THEY AGREE AND SIGN THE FINAL BUDGET IN JUNE.

THE FINAL BUDGET NEEDS TO BE SIGNED BEFORE JUNE 30TH, AND OFTEN THEY DO.

EVEN IF THEY LATER ON THEY WILL MAKE SOME MODIFICATIONS.

BUT THE REASON I'M SAYING MAY REVISE IS BECAUSE BY THAT POINT, THE NUMBERS TEND TO BE PRETTY SOLID AND THE CHANGES ARE NOT HUGE BY THE TIME JUNE GETS HERE.

OKAY, SO WILL THESE NUMBERS HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE HOUSING PROJECT? THANK YOU. GOOD QUESTION.

SO THE HOUSING PROJECT IS BEING FINANCED IN A DIFFERENT MANNER.

SO THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE IS WORKING WITH BOND COUNCIL.

AND WHAT THEY'RE TRYING TO DO IS GET THOSE DOLLARS USING LEASE REVENUE BONDS.

THAT IS ESSENTIALLY GETTING A LOAN AGAINST YOUR GENERAL FUND OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME.

SO THEY'RE NOT NECESSARILY TOUCHING MONEY FROM THE GENERAL FUND TODAY.

THEY'RE GOING TO SPREAD THE LOAN OVER THE NEXT 30 YEARS USING PRIVATE FINANCING ALMOST.

YEAH. OKAY.

AND DOES THIS HAVE ANY IMPACT ON THE COLLEGE CONSIDERING INVESTING IN THE PART TIME HEALTH CARE? THAT JUST DEPENDS ON HOW THE MONEY IS ALLOCATED IN MAY.

SO ESSENTIALLY, AT THIS PARTICULAR POINT, ANY MONEY THE IS CONSIDERED NEW BY DEFINITION. THEY SAID THAT IT COULD BE RECLAIMED IN THE 5 BILLION OR 3.8 BILLION THAT I HIGHLIGHTED THERE.

SO WHAT MANY OF US, INCLUDING DOCTOR HUANG, HAS BEEN DOING IS ACTUALLY ADVOCATING TO KEEP SOME OF THESE BASIC SERVICES.

THE WERE RECENTLY IMPLEMENTED WITHIN THE SUBSEQUENT BUDGETS.

BUT AGAIN, THE CONVERSATIONS ARE HAPPENING.

THE RESPONSES TO THOSE CONVERSATIONS ARE NOT CLEAR UP TO THIS POINT.

GREAT. THANK YOU. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? SEEING NONE, WE'RE GOING TO MOVE ON TO INSTITUTIONAL RECOGNITION OF CLASSIFIED.

ONE MORE THING. I'D LIKE TO THANK DOCTOR WONG AND MR.

[00:30:01]

LANDA LOPEZ FOR THE CONVERSATIONS.

WE HAVE BEEN COMMUNICATING NOW FOR MONTHS, I THINK AND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO PLAN AND BE BETTER PREPARED.

SO I WOULD LIKE TO THANK BOTH LEADERSHIP OF THE UNION FOR COLLABORATION AND BEING OPEN TO HAVE THE CONVERSATION.

SO THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK, DOCTOR WONG AND DOCTOR BREMMER AND DOCTOR FIERRO ON HAVING THESE CONVERSATIONS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE STAY AHEAD AND WE DO NOT FIND OURSELVES IN A SITUATION WHERE WE DON'T HAVE THE BUDGET TO BE ABLE TO SUSTAIN US.

SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK THAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING UP TO THIS POINT.

NOW WE'RE GOING TO MOVE ON TO INSTITUTIONAL RECOGNITION OF CLASSIFIED AND EMPLOYEE STEPHANIE

[2.02 Institutional Presentation: Recognition of Classified/Confidential Employee of the Month]

MINAMI. MINAMI.

OKAY. SO YEAH.

ALL RIGHT.

YES YOU ARE STEPHANIE.

ALL RIGHT. STEPHANIE BEGAN HER CAREER AT CERRITOS COLLEGE IN 2015 AS A PROGRAM ASSISTANT IN PUBLIC AFFAIRS.

WITHIN EIGHT MONTHS, SHE WAS PROMOTED TO FOUNDATION SECRETARY FOR THE CERRITOS COLLEGE FOUNDATION, AND AGAIN WAS PROMOTED IN 2018 TO EOPS SPECIALIST IN THE EOPS DEPARTMENT.

IT WAS A STUDENT WHO NOMINATED HER THE SINGLE MOTHER OF THREE, AND SHE WRITES STEPHANIE HAS BEEN HELPFUL AND INSPIRING TO ME IF I AM HAVING DIFFICULTY DEALING WITH LIFE, SHE'S ALWAYS THERE TO TALK.

STEPHANIE IS ALWAYS CARING AND LOVING TOWARDS ME AND OTHER STUDENTS WHO DEAL WITH HARDSHIPS.

SHE ALWAYS POINTS ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AND HELPS ME STAY ON TRACK.

STEPHANIE, THANK YOU FOR YOUR INSPIRING, FOR INSPIRING OUR STUDENTS AND HELPING THEM ACHIEVE THEIR ACADEMIC GOALS.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO AND YOUR EXCEPTIONAL WORK.

OOPS. I'D LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU.

THANK YOU. YOU WANT TO? SURE. OKAY.

WELL, I WAS VERY SURPRISED TO RECEIVE THIS RECOGNITION.

I TRY TO THINK WHICH STUDENT IT WAS, AND I COULDN'T.

SO I'M.

IT JUST MOVES MY HEART BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT I DO HERE IS TO SERVE STUDENTS AND TO KNOW THAT I'VE MADE A DIFFERENCE IN SOMEONE'S LIFE.

AND I DIDN'T I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT STUDENTS COULD NOMINATE STAFF FOR THE RECOGNITION.

SO IT'S SUCH A HONOR FOR ME TO BE RECOGNIZED BY MY STUDENTS AND THE, THE, THE ONES THAT I'M HERE TO SERVE.

AND SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RECOGNIZING ME AND GIVING ME THIS OPPORTUNITY TO.

YEAH, I JUST I'M NOT USED TO THIS.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

JUST ONE NIGHT. OKAY.

THANK YOU. THANK.

YOU. TAKE A PICTURE WITH US.

YEAH. OKAY.

WE'RE GETTING IN THIS THING.

YEAH.

YEAH. THANK YOU.

STEPHANIE. THANK YOU.

CONGRATULATIONS. WELL DESERVED.

NOW WE'RE GOING TO MOVE ON TO OUR INSTITUTIONAL PRESENTATIONS FROM 22 TO 2023.

[2.03 Institutional Presentation: 2022-2023 Sabbatical Leave Reports]

SABBATICAL LEAVE REPORTS.

AND WE WILL START OFF WITH LISA BERTINI VITELA.

[00:35:04]

SO APPARENTLY I'M EVERYONE'S BACKUP TONIGHT.

I'M THE BACKUP OF ALL BACKUPS.

SO THANK YOU, TRUSTEES, FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT ON SUPPORTING OUR FACULTY.

GOING ON A SABBATICAL LEAVE.

OUR SABBATICAL LEAVE.

COMMITTEE CHAIR, JULIE DAVIS, CANNOT BE HERE TONIGHT AS SHE IS UNDER THE WEATHER, SO SHE.

SHE APOLOGIZED FOR NOT BEING TO BE HERE TONIGHT.

BUT AGAIN, FOR THOSE WHO ARE LISTENING, IF YOU'RE JUST WONDERING WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF SABBATICAL LEAVE? SABBATICAL LEAVE IS A PRIVILEGE FOR FULL TIME FACULTY MEMBERS FOR INTELLECTUAL REFRESHMENT WITH THE ULTIMATE OBJECTIVES OF ENHANCEMENT OF SERVICE TO THE DISTRICT AND TO INCREASE ITS DISTINCTION.

TONIGHT, YOU'RE GOING TO RECEIVE SIX SABBATICAL REPORTS FROM THE 2223 ACADEMIC YEAR.

AND SO YOU HAVE DOCTOR LISA BOUTIN, VITELA PROFESSOR OF ART HISTORY.

CHAD GREEN, PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH.

DOCTOR SHEILA HILL, PROFESSOR OF COUNSELING.

COLLEEN COLT, PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH, DOCTOR.

REINA LIU, PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY.

AND NIKKI LOVEJOY ROBLE, PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH.

THANK YOU, LISA, THANK YOU.

I HAVE SOME SLIDES.

IF THOSE COULD BE BROUGHT UP.

ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU.

TRUSTEES. DOCTOR FIERRO, ESTEEMED AUDIENCE MEMBERS.

I'M SO EXCITED TO GIVE YOU KIND OF A LIGHTNING TOUR OF MY 20 2223 SABBATICAL PRESENTATION WHERE I FOCUSED ON DIGITAL HUMANITIES.

SO USING DIGITAL TOOLS TO PROCESS HUMANITIES, RECENT RESEARCH DATA AND ALSO PRESENT THAT DATA.

AND THEN I ALSO VISITED A LOT OF CAMPUS SPACES DEDICATED TO DIGITAL INNOVATION.

SO ON THE SCREEN, I HAVE A USC PROJECT THAT'S MEANT TO KIND OF DIGITALLY EXPLORE THE SCHOOL OF ATHENS, A PAINTING BY RAPHAEL AT THE VATICAN.

AND THEN I ALSO HAVE A PHOTOGRAPH OF A MAKERSPACE, KIND OF A DIGITAL INNOVATION SPACE AT SAN DIEGO STATE.

SO JUST AN EXAMPLE OF SOME OF THE PROJECTS I WAS ENGAGING WITH.

NEXT SLIDE.

OKAY. THANK YOU.

THERE WERE THREE OBJECTIVES.

SO RESEARCHING DIGITAL INNOVATION IN CAMPUS CENTERS, ALSO THINKING ABOUT DIGITAL TOOLS AND DEVELOPING MY CURRICULUM AND THEN PROVIDING RESOURCES FOR CERRITOS COLLEGE AND FOR MY COLLEAGUES, OTHER FACULTY WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN ENGAGING IN SOME OF THESE PROJECTS.

AND THEN THERE'S ALSO SOME UNEXPECTED DEVELOPMENTS THAT HAPPEN.

SO STAY TILL THE END OF THE PRESENTATION FOR FOR THAT.

THESE WERE SOME OF THE SITES THAT I WENT TO SEE.

I WENT TO SAN DIEGO STATE, AS I ALREADY MENTIONED, THEY HAD A DIGITAL HUMANITIES CENTER, A MAKERSPACE, A FINANCIAL MARKETS LAB.

I WENT TO A HUGE NEW MAKERSPACE AT UC SAN DIEGO.

I WENT TO A WONDERFUL LAB CALLED THE AHMANSON LAB AT USC.

I ALSO VISITED MAKERSPACES AT MOUNT SAC AND AT ORANGE COAST COLLEGE, WHERE THEY'RE VERY FAMOUS FOR THEIR MAKERSPACE, WHERE YOU CAN CREATE YOUR OWN SURFBOARD.

I WAS ABLE TO GO TO A NUMBER OF CONFERENCES.

THE BEST ONE WAS THIS NETWORKED CONNECTIONS CONFERENCE THAT WAS ORGANIZED THROUGH SAN DIEGO STATE AND ALSO SAN JOSE STATE.

NOT ONLY DID I GET TO GO TO A WONDERFUL TWO DAY CONFERENCE THINKING ABOUT INNOVATIVE WAYS TO USE DIGITAL TOOLS WITH HUMANITIES RESEARCH LIKE MAPPING, PODCASTING, DIGITAL TIMELINES. BUT I ALSO WAS ABLE TO BE PAIRED WITH A MENTOR AND ALSO MEET WITH THIS GROUP ONCE A MONTH FOR THE ENTIRETY OF MY SABBATICAL YEAR.

IN ADDITION TO THAT, I WAS ABLE TO ADD NEW DIGITAL PROJECTS TO MY CLASSES.

SO ALL OF MY CLASSES NOW HAVE A DIGITAL MAP AND A DIGITAL TIMELINE ELEMENT.

SO THANK YOU TO MY STUDENT, JASON BESUGO, WHO ALLOWED ME TO USE HIS MAP.

WE'RE SEEING HERE PETER PAUL RUBENS PAINTINGS MAPPED ACROSS DIFFERENT AREAS OF EUROPE.

AND THEN ALSO MY STUDENT SORAYA MARTINEZ, WHO VERY KINDLY LET ME USE A SCREENSHOT OF HER MAP OF THE SISTINE CHAPEL AND KIND OF MAPPING THAT PARTICULAR PROJECT.

I ALSO WAS ABLE TO HAVE SOME WONDERFUL DISCUSSIONS WITH COLLEAGUES ACROSS CERRITOS COLLEGE, AND JUST THINK ABOUT WHAT KIND OF TECHNOLOGY WE'RE USING HERE AND HOW WE CAN CREATE INTERDISCIPLINARY PROJECTS.

AND THEY EVEN HELP ME CREATE A 3D PRINT OF A LIKE A SCALED DOWN HEAD OF A SCULPTURE BY MICHELANGELO.

SO THIS IS MY 3D PRINT THERE.

IN ADDITION, I CREATED A CANVAS COURSE SO FACULTY CAN GO IN AND LEARN MORE ABOUT TEXT ANALYSIS, TEXT ANNOTATIONS, IMAGE ANNOTATIONS WITH TOOLS LIKE MIRADOR THAT I'M SHOWING YOU ON THE SCREEN.

YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN DIGITAL EXHIBITIONS WITH TOOLS LIKE OMEKA.

SO YOU SEE THAT LISTED THERE AS WELL.

I ALSO WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE A MAKERSPACE OR DIGITAL INNOVATION SPACE, OR EVEN AN AI SPACE IN OUR OWN SUCCESS CENTER.

[00:40:08]

AND DEAN SHAWNA BASKETT HAS BEEN VERY KIND TO SPEAK WITH ME ABOUT THAT.

ALSO. FRANK MIXON, THANK YOU FOR MEETING WITH ME.

FRANK. TO DISCUSS SOME OF THESE POSSIBILITIES.

AND MAYBE THIS IS SOMETHING CERRITOS WOULD WANT TO THINK ABOUT IN THE NEXT COUPLE YEARS.

TO END, I WAS ALSO ABLE TO THINK ABOUT SOME NEW THINGS THAT I WASN'T EXPECTING.

SO I WAS ABLE TO MOVE TWO COURSES TO ZERO TEXTBOOK COST FOR MY STUDENTS.

SO USING SOME OF THESE DIGITAL TOOLS, IN ADDITION TO THAT, I WORKED WITH MICHELLE SIMOTAS AND LYNN SHERWIN, OUR D COORDINATOR AND ENGLISH INSTRUCTOR, AND WE WERE ABLE TO OBTAIN A $200,000 GRANT TO CREATE A DEGREE PATHWAY IN VISUAL AND CULTURAL STUDIES AND A $25,000 GRANT FOR ART HISTORY TO DEVELOP A DEGREE PATHWAY.

IN ADDITION, I'M WORKING WITH COLLEAGUES TRACY UCHIDA AND IRENE JOE ON DEVELOPING AN ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM.

SO THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'RE WORKING ON THE CURRICULUM, AND WE'RE REALLY THINKING ABOUT SOME OF THE DIGITAL TOOLS THAT EXIST.

AND THEN SOMETHING REALLY FUN THAT I WORKED ON WAS I CREATED A SPECIAL TOPICS CLASS ABOUT THE HISTORY OF DISNEYLAND AND AMUSEMENT PARKS, ALSO USING DIGITAL TOOLS.

AND A LOT OF OUR STUDENTS HAVE WORKED AT DISNEYLAND OR ARE INTERESTED IN ANIMATION AND THOSE TYPES OF FIELDS.

SO IT WAS VERY EXCITING TO CONCLUDE, I JUST WANT TO THINK ABOUT WAYS TO REALLY ENGAGE OUR STUDENTS.

SO I JUST WANTED TO END WITH THIS PARTICULAR SLIDE WHERE YOU HAD KIND OF A BORING ROOM IN THE USC LIBRARY THAT THEN BECAME A VERY ENGAGING DIGITAL SPACE.

SO I'LL JUST END WITH THAT IMAGE AND I'LL PASS IT OVER TO MY COLLEAGUE CHAD GREEN.

THANK YOU.

GOOD EVENING.

WENDY, CAN I GRAB MY SLIDES? THANK YOU. AND WHILE WE WAIT A SECOND, I JUST WANT TO SAY I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO ACTUALLY ATTEND LISA'S WORKSHOP.

SHE DID THROUGH THE CENTER FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE AS A RESULT OF HER SABBATICAL RESEARCH.

AND THEY WERE WONDERFUL. SO I JUST WANTED TO GIVE HER A LITTLE PLUG THERE.

OH NO PROBLEM. SO EVENING, EVERYBODY.

I'M CHAD GREEN, I'M A PROFESSOR IN THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT AT CERRITOS COLLEGE.

THIS IS MY 15TH YEAR WORKING WITH OUR WONDERFUL STUDENTS HERE, AND I FEEL VERY LUCKY TO HAVE HAD ALL THAT TIME.

THE TITLE OF MY PRESENTATION TO YOU ALL TONIGHT IS CALLED THE CROSSOVER.

SO I'M EXPLORING COMICS AS LITERATURE, COMPOSITION, SOCIAL JUSTICE, AND ALSO AS A FORM OF SOCIAL LEARNING.

SERVICE LEARNING. EXCUSE ME.

OH. HOW DO I DO THIS? SORRY. THERE WE GO.

COOL. THERE'S ME.

SO BEFORE WE GET INTO THE CONTENT, I JUST WANT TO TAKE A MOMENT TO THANK YOU, OUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES, FOR APPROVING MY FIRST SABBATICAL LEAVE, AS WELL AS OUR COLLEGE PRESIDENT, DOCTOR JOSE FIERRO, OUR VICE PRESIDENT OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS, DOCTOR FRANK MIXON OUR FACULTY SENATE AND ITS PRESIDENT, DENNIS FALCON.

AND THEN ALSO OUR SABBATICAL LEAVE COMMITTEE AND ITS CHAIR, JULIE DAVIS.

DURING MY SABBATICAL, I COMPLETED THE TWO PROJECTS I PROPOSED IN MY APPLICATION.

ONE THAT WAS FOCUSED ON INCREASING THE RELEVANCY OF OUR WRITING COURSES BY INCORPORATING MORE SOCIAL JUSTICE THEMES AND SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS, AS WELL AS A PROJECT ABOUT RESEARCHING COMICS AS A FORM OF LITERATURE AND ALSO MULTIMODAL COMPOSITION.

TO PREPARE TO COMPLETE THESE PROJECTS, I DID SEVERAL THINGS.

I ALSO NEED TO GET GLASSES, APPARENTLY.

I TOOK RELEVANT COURSES, I ATTENDED CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS, I STUDIED MODEL COURSES AT OTHER COLLEGES, AND THEN I READ BOOKS, ARTICLES AND ALSO COMICS. HERE WE GO.

SO MORE SPECIFICALLY, I TOOK FOUR COURSES RELATED TO SOCIAL JUSTICE THEMES SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS, AS WELL AS COMICS, AS A FORM OF LITERATURE, AND AS A FORM OF COMPOSITION OF THE EXAMPLES I PUT UP THERE ON THE SCREEN.

THE MOST IMPACTFUL FOR ME WAS WHEN I TOOK THROUGH THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO, WHICH WAS CALLED RACE, POWER, DYNAMICS AND OPPRESSION IN THE FILM BLACK PANTHER, WHICH WAS ONE OF THE ONES THAT REALLY MADE ME SEE HOW THESE PROJECTS COULD START TO FLOW TOGETHER.

I ATTENDED LOTS OF CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS.

PROBABLY NOT AS MANY AS LISA.

ALMOST ALL OF THEM WERE PART OF THE 2023 CONFERENCE ON COLLEGE COMPOSITION AND COMMUNICATION ANNUAL CONVENTION.

ONE OF THE ONES THAT REALLY STOOD OUT TO ME, THERE ACTUALLY WAS THE POWER OF STORIES AND ACTIVIST AND JUSTICE ORIENTED PROJECTS, WHICH WAS WITH A PROFESSOR AT VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY TRACY GARDNER.

THAT WAS SUPER IMPACTFUL AS WELL.

IN TERMS OF MY RESEARCH YOU KNOW YOU ALL GAVE AN ENGLISH PROFESSOR A YEAR TO TAKE CLASSES AND TO READ, AND I REALLY DUG INTO THE READING. SO ACTUALLY, I WOUND UP READING MORE THAN 70 BOOK LENGTH WORKS, AS WELL AS MORE THAN 110 ARTICLE LENGTH WORKS.

SOME OF THESE WERE COMICS, YES, SO THAT WENT A LITTLE FASTER.

IT'S TRUE. REALLY IMPACTFUL.

[00:45:03]

HERE IS A BOOK CALLED SYLLABUS NOTES FROM AN ACCIDENTAL PROFESSOR BY LYNDA BARRY.

I'M ACTUALLY A CO-FACILITATING, A FOUR PART PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES FOR OUR FACULTY BASED ON THAT BOOK.

SO THAT'S HOW A LOT OF INFLUENCE ON MY THINKING.

I ALSO ANALYZED COURSE OUTLINES AND SYLLABI FOR POTENTIAL MODEL COURSES RELATED TO SOCIAL JUSTICE AND SERVICE LEARNING AND COMICS.

AND I ALSO COMMUNICATED THROUGH PHONE AND EMAIL AND ZOOM AND WHAT HAVE YOU RIGHT, WITH COLLEGE EDUCATORS WHO HAVE EITHER CREATED AND OR TAUGHT THOSE CLASSES THEMSELVES. SOME OF THESE WERE VERY INFLUENTIAL ON MY THINKING AS WELL.

I WANTED TO GIVE IT A SHOUT OUT TO ONE OF OUR COLLEAGUES AT THE CITY COLLEGE OF SAN FRANCISCO, LOUIS SCHUBERT, WHO TEACHES A REALLY INTERESTING CLASS CALLED COMICS, POWER AND SOCIETY. THEY'RE ALSO REALLY NICE, WAS A CLASS AT PORTLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE SOCIAL JUSTICE THEORY AND PRACTICE, TAUGHT BY NICHOLAS FOX, WHO MADE SOME NICE TIME TO TALK WITH ME.

I REALLY APPRECIATED THAT.

ALL RIGHT. COOL. MOVE ALONG.

SO RESULTS AS A RESULT OF WHAT I LEARNED, I DISCOVERED THAT MY TWO PROJECTS NEED NOT BE SEPARATE.

IN IN FACT, THEY PRESENTED A PERFECT OPPORTUNITY FOR WHAT, IN THE GRAND TRADITION OF COMICS, THEY WOULD CALL A CROSSOVER, RIGHT? THESE UNANTICIPATED PAIRINGS OF SUBJECTS THAT ARE USUALLY THE CENTERS OF THEIR OWN STORIES, YOU KNOW, UNEXPECTEDLY PLACED INTO THE CONTEXT OF A SINGLE STORY, ACTUALLY PRODUCE SOME REALLY INTERESTING INTERACTIONS.

WITH THAT IN MIND, I BECAME INSPIRED AND I CREATED A NEW CROSSOVER CURRICULUM FOR MY FRESHMAN COMPOSITION COURSES, WHICH I'VE HAD A CHANCE TO REFINE OVER THE COURSE OF NOW THREE SEMESTERS.

NOW INCORPORATES SOCIAL JUSTICE, SERVICE, LEARNING AND COMICS ALL INTO ONE CLASS.

I WROTE A COURSE OUTLINE OF RECORD FOR NEW COURSE READINGS AND COMICS AND GRAPHIC LITERATURE THAT WILL BE ADDING TO THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT.

I CREATED A CANVAS SITE, ALSO CALLED THE CROSSOVER, TO PROVIDE SAMPLE MATERIALS FOR CERRITOS COLLEGE COLLEAGUES.

IN ADDITION, I FACILITATE FACILITATED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS FOR BOTH TEACHERS AND TUTORS, AS WELL AS PUBLISHED ARTICLES, COMICS, AND A REVIEW THAT CAME OUT OF MY SABBATICAL RESEARCH.

SO IN TERMS OF CURRICULUM, IT'S THE BIG ACHIEVEMENTS I MENTIONED TO YOU ALL WROTE THE COURSE OUTLINE OF RECORD FOR THAT NEW CLASS READINGS AND COMICS AND GRAPHIC LITERATURE.

NOT ONLY HAS IT BEEN APPROVED BY OUR ENGLISH DEPARTMENT, ALSO OUR VISUAL AND CULTURAL STUDIES PROGRAM HAS AGREED TO ADD IT AS AN ELECTIVE TO THEIR DEGREE, WHICH I REALLY APPRECIATE. I HAVE THAT CROSSOVER CURRICULUM FOR ENGLISH 100, WHICH IS AVAILABLE TO ALL MY COLLEAGUES THROUGH THE CANVAS SITE THAT I MENTIONED EARLIER, AND ALSO SOME MATERIALS FOR OTHER CLASSES LIKE ENGLISH 247, ENGLISH 248 A AND HUMANITIES 107.

AND THERE'S A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PIECE I MENTIONED.

SO HAVE FACILITATED THE FIRST OF FOUR SESSIONS BASED ON THE BOOK I MENTIONED EARLIER.

WE'RE CALLING THAT ADDING A TWIST INTERDISCIPLINARY CREATIVITY IN OUR CLASSES.

AND THEN I ALSO FACILITATED A TUTOR TRAINING FOR OUR SUCCESS CENTER, WHICH WAS CALLED HOW TO HELP STUDENTS WRITE ABOUT COMICS NOT ONLY BASED ON MY OWN CLASSES, BUT THE CLASSES OF COLLEAGUES ACROSS CAMPUS WHO ALSO ASSIGN GRAPHIC NOVELS AND GRAPHIC LITERATURE.

AND LAST UP, I DID HAVE SOME PUBLICATIONS, WHICH WAS COOL.

THAT WAS UNANTICIPATED.

IT WAS NOT PART OF MY PLAN.

SO I HAD A CHANCE TO PUBLISH TWO ARTICLES, A REVIEW AND TWO COMICS SO FAR.

I ALSO HAVE A THIRD ARTICLE UNDER REVIEW AT A SCHOLARLY JOURNAL, WHICH FINGERS CROSSED, WE'LL SEE IF THAT COMES THROUGH AS WELL.

AND THE LAST THING I WANT TO SAY, AS A RESULT OF THIS, I DEFINITELY FEEL REFRESHED AS OUR UNION PRESIDENT LYN, WAS MENTIONING EARLIER AND REJUVENATED.

YOU KNOW, NOT ONLY ARE THE STUDENTS IN MY CLASSES DOING MORE WORK WITH SOCIAL JUSTICE AND SERVICE LEARNING AND COMICS, BUT ALSO WE'RE HAVING FUN, WHICH I SHOULD MENTION SHOULD BE PART OF LEARNING AS WELL.

SO THAT'S IT.

I WILL YIELD THE FLOOR TO MY AWESOME COLLEAGUE SHEILA HILL AND GET OUT.

HI. IF I CAN HAVE MY SLIDES.

GOOD EVENING EVERYONE.

IT IS MY PLEASURE TO BE HERE AND REPORT ON SOMETHING THAT I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WAS POSSIBLE, AND THAT WAS TO TAKE TIME AND REFLECT UPON THE ART OF COUNSELING AND SPECIFICALLY WORKING WITH AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS.

AND WHY I SAY THAT IS BECAUSE IT IS AMAZING TO THINK OF THE ACADEMIC JOURNEY OF OUR STUDENTS AND THE UPS AND DOWNS THAT THEY GO THROUGH THAT I SEE AS PART OF THE UMOJA PROGRAM.

SO TO HAVE A TIME SET ASIDE TO STUDY, TO TALK TO COLLEAGUES AND STUDENTS, TO TALK ABOUT AND SHARE THEIR JOURNEY WAS AMAZING.

AND IT WAS VERY REFRESHING.

AND I THANK YOU FOR THAT.

LET'S SEE. HERE WE GO.

[00:50:02]

I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE BOARD.

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THE APPROVAL AND THE OPPORTUNITY.

I WANT TO THANK THE COMMITTEE, SABBATICAL COMMITTEE.

I ALSO WANT TO THANK THE COLLEGE FOR FINDING A WAY TO ALLOW A COUNSELOR IN A VERY OVER HOW SHALL I SAY? WE HAVE A NUMBER OF PRIORITIES AND INITIATIVES GOING ON TO ALLOW US TO HAVE SOME TIME OFF TO DO THIS.

I'M VERY GRATEFUL TO THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR AND TO OUR DEAN AS WELL.

I WANT TO THANK THE YAMAJI EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, BECAUSE THEY STEPPED IN AND PROVIDED AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ME DURING THE SABBATICAL, AND I ALSO WANT TO THANK OUR STUDENTS WHO SHARED THEIR JOURNEY WITH ME.

SO ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS I DID WAS TO THINK ABOUT WAYS IN WHICH WE COULD ENHANCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR STUDENTS AND SPECIFICALLY THE UMOJA STUDENTS. AND WHAT I FOUND IN THE LITERATURE THAT SUPPORTED THE OPPORTUNITY WAS LOOKING AT HOW OUR STUDENTS, AND THIS IS IN GENERAL, ALL OF OUR STUDENTS WOULD FIT THIS CATEGORY, FEEL A LITTLE BIT ACADEMICALLY ADRIFT.

THEY HAVE STRUGGLED WITH ISOLATION POST COVID.

THEY ALSO HAVE INDICATED FEELING A LITTLE BIT MORE ANXIOUS AND DEPRESSED.

SO THEIR MENTAL HEALTH IS BECOMING MORE OF AN ISSUE THAT COLLEGES HAVE TO RESPOND TO.

BUT WHEN I STARTED STUDYING THE STORIES OF THE 1960S AND 70S STUDENT LEADERSHIP AND THE EMPHASIS THAT THEY WENT THROUGH OR NOT, THE EMPHASIS, THE EXPERIENCES THAT THEY WENT THROUGH IN ORDER TO SURVIVE THE 70S AND THE 60S ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES.

IT HELPED ME START TO THINK BACK ABOUT.

SO WHEN OUR STUDENTS TALK ABOUT FEELING UNDERWHELMED WITH THE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE, I'M LIKE, WHY IS THAT? SO I STARTED TALKING TO THEM, AND THEY SHARED THAT THEY DIDN'T FEEL LIKE THEY COULD ENGAGE WITH THE MATERIAL.

I WAS LIKE, WHY IS THAT? THEY STARTED TALKING ABOUT, WELL, YOU KNOW, IT DOESN'T RELATE TO WHO I AM AND ALL OF THAT.

BUT THEN I HIT ON IT.

I SAID, WHAT ARE YOU MISSING? AND I WAS LIKE, WELL, I DON'T I DON'T FEEL LIKE I HAVE ANYTHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO.

I DON'T FEEL LIKE I HAVE ANYTHING THAT WILL THAT TIES ME TO SOMETHING.

I SAID, OKAY. ALL RIGHT.

SO THE THE DEVELOPMENT BOOK EVOLVED OUT OF THOSE CONVERSATIONS AND THOSE ARTICLES TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA, THE ISLAND, THE MAP OF THE ISLAND IS THERE BECAUSE I TOOK THE STUDENTS ON A JOURNEY.

THAT'S THE WAY I VIEW IT.

I TOOK THEM ON A JOURNEY.

WE WENT STARTED OUT WITH THE IDEA OF, LET'S TALK ABOUT HOW YOU SEE YOURSELF, YOUR SELF CONFIDENCE.

LET'S TALK ABOUT SELF DETERMINATION.

LET'S ALSO TALK ABOUT THIS PRINCIPLE OF SANKOFA.

AND SO WE UTILIZE THE TERM SANKOFA WHICH MEANS TO TO GO GET IT, TO LOOK BACK AND TO GO GET IT, TO FETCH IT AND BRING IT FORWARD.

THAT'S AN AFRICAN TERM PRIMARILY OF SWAHILI DERIVATIVE.

AND IT IS AN AMAZING TRAIT OR CHARACTERISTICS THAT WE TRY TO BUILD INTO OUR UMOJA PROGRAMS AROUND THE STATE.

AFTER BUILDING THE THE WORKBOOK, I DECIDED, OKAY, NOW LET'S GO INTO FIGURING OUT HOW TO GET OUR STUDENTS CONNECTED. THE CONNECTION CAME THROUGH MENTORING.

WE HAD A PARTNERSHIP THAT WAS FLEDGLING, SO I TOOK TIME AND WORKED WITH THE EMERGE PROGRAM OF LA, WHICH IS ACTUALLY A PROGRAM THAT WORKS WITH FOSTER YOUTH AS A WAY TO ESTABLISH RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR STUDENTS, WITH THE FOSTER YOUTH IN THE LA COUNTY WHO ARE ASSIGNED TO THE EMERGE.

I GUESS IT'S REALLY A CENTER PROGRAM THAT WORKS WITH THEM ON THEIR ACADEMICS.

SO OUR STUDENTS NOW HAVE THE ABILITY TO PARTNER WITH EMERGE TO SERVE AS MENTORS, BECAUSE ONE OF THE THINGS THEY SAID WAS THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO GROUND THEM.

SO GIVING TO OTHERS IS A WAY TO GROUND ONESELF AND ALSO TO SEE THE LIGHT OF SOMEONE ELSE BEING WHAT'S THE WORD I WANT TO USE BEING ENLIVENED BECAUSE OF YOUR EXPERIENCES THAT YOU ARE SHARING WITH THEM? THAT JUST CREATES A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF WHAT I CALL ENERGY FOR THE STUDENTS TO CONTINUE AND TO PERSIST IN OUR SCHOOL AND FOR THE FOSTER YOUTH TO CONTINUE TO PERSIST, HOPEFULLY COMING TO A HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION NEAR YOU. THE SECOND THING WE DEVELOPED WAS A FACULTY MENTORING PROGRAM, THE THE FACULTY MENTORING PROGRAM IS GOING TO BE DESIGNED TO HELP OUR STUDENTS TRANSFER.

[00:55:01]

IT'S ALSO GOING TO BE DESIGNED TO HELP THE STUDENTS WITH A STEM FOCUS TO BE PAIRED WITH FACULTY MEMBERS HERE ON THE CAMPUS.

AND THAT IS SOMETHING THAT MIGHT HAVE TO BE DELAYED AND FULLY ENTERING, BECAUSE I DID PUT IN THAT I WANTED TO HAVE STIPENDS FOR BOTH THE STUDENTS AND THE FACULTY MEMBERS, AND THAT PROBABLY ISN'T GOING TO HAPPEN RIGHT NOW, BUT WE HAVE THE WORKINGS FOR IT, AND I AM SO EXCITED WHEN WE ARE ABLE TO LAUNCH THAT IT'LL BE A WONDERFUL THING FOR OUR STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO HAVE FACULTY MENTORS SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO TRANSFERRING AND STEM FOCUS FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS.

AND THE THIRD THING I DISCOVERED, OR AREA WE WENT TO, WAS PEER TO PEER CREATING POSITIONS CALLED UMOJA GUIDES FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO HAVE A ACADEMICALLY, WELL, STRONG ACADEMIC PRESENCE, BUT ALSO VERY ACTIVE IN THE PROGRAM TO WORK WITH OUR NEW STUDENTS WHO ARE COMING IN.

THAT PROGRAM IS SET TO BE IMPLEMENTED THIS FALL.

WE HAVE 14 STUDENTS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN SERVING IN THAT POSITION, SO I'M EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO OFFER THAT.

WHERE I FOUND THE MOST SATISFACTION IN THIS.

EXPERIENCE OF A SABBATICAL WAS IN THE READING OF THE LITERATURE.

AS YOU KNOW, THE AFRICAN AMERICAN TRANSFER RATE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

AND WHAT WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO DO THROUGH THESE VARIOUS ACADEMIC PUBLICATIONS IS TO SAY, HEY, THESE ARE THINGS THAT WE CAN WORK ON.

THESE ARE TECHNIQUES. THESE ARE OPPORTUNITIES.

THE TIPPING POINT ARTICLE POINTS OUT THAT STUDENTS DO BETTER WHEN THEY ARE ABLE TO HAVE ACADEMIC COUNSELING.

FIRST OFF, MATH AND ENGLISH IN THAT FIRST YEAR, BUT ALSO THE ABILITY TO CONNECT WITH A COUNSELOR OR A PROGRAM SUCH AS UMOJA.

THAT WAS A FINDING AND A RECOMMENDATION OF THE RAP GROUP ON THE BEST WAYS IN WHICH TO HELP AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS TRANSFER. THERE'S ALSO THREE BOOKS THAT TOUCH ME.

PUNISHED FOR DREAMING.

A PHENOMENAL READ.

IT TALKS ABOUT THE THE ASPECT OF THE MILLENNIAL STUDENT WHO HAS NOT REALLY BEEN SERVED WELL BY OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM, AND IT TALKS ABOUT HOW THAT PLAYS OUT AND HOW THAT AFFECTS THEM NOW.

THE OTHER ONE THAT I WOULD POINT OUT WOULD BE RATCHET ACADEMICS.

AND IT LOOKS AT HOW TO TAKE THE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE FROM A STERILE CLASSROOM TO A MORE LIVED LEARNING EXPERIENCE.

AND I WOULD SAY THAT PROBABLY THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE SABBATICAL WAS THE OPPORTUNITY THAT WAS AFFORDED TO ME BECAUSE I WAS ON SABBATICAL BY THE UMOJA FOUNDATION TO ALLOW ME TO TRAVEL TO GHANA, WHERE I WAS ABLE TO MEET WITH ACADEMICS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WESTERN CAPE AND ALSO THE UNIVERSITY OF OH MAN, WHAT AM I DRAWING A BLANK? UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN CAPE.

AND I AM SO SORRY.

I'M DRAWING A BLANK ON THE THIRD SECOND SCHOOL.

THOSE THOSE INDIVIDUALS HAVE AGREED TO WORK WITH THE REPRESENTATIVES THAT WERE THERE TO ESTABLISH LEARNING STUDY ABROAD, LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS.

WE JUST HAD OUR FIRST WEBINAR ANNOUNCING THAT THESE OPPORTUNITIES WILL BE AVAILABLE TO OUR STUDENTS.

AND IT IS AMAZING TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY FIRST TO TRAVEL TO GHANA TO TALK TO AND TO BE A PART OF AN ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE.

WAS THERE AS PART OF THE SUMMIT FOR THE CREATION OF AN ACADEMIC APPROACH THAT SERVES OUR AFRICAN AMERICAN MALE STUDENTS SPECIFICALLY? SO I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME THIS OPPORTUNITY TO DO THE RESEARCH.

I ALSO WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS CHANGED HOW I SEE OUR STUDENTS.

I SEE THEM FROM A LENS.

NOT THAT I DIDN'T BEFORE, BUT A POSSIBILITIES.

POSSIBILITIES THAT CAN CHANGE NOT ONLY THEIR LIVES, BUT THEIR FAMILIES LIVES.

AND I THANK YOU.

[01:00:02]

THANK YOU.

GOOD EVENING EVERYONE.

MY NAME IS COLLEEN KALT.

I'M A PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH AND I'M HERE TO REPORT ON MY ONE YEAR SABBATICAL LEAVE.

SO THE FIRST PART OF MY SABBATICAL CONSISTED OF RESEARCH, READING, AND COURSE REDESIGN.

I WANTED TO EXPLORE WAYS TO CONNECT LITERATURE TO CURRENT EVENTS.

IT JUST SO HAPPENED THAT THE START OF MY SABBATICAL COINCIDED WITH THE DOBBS DECISION OVERTURNING ROE V WADE.

SO I BEGAN EXPLORING LITERATURE RELATED TO THE METOO MOVEMENT, FEMINISM, AND WOMEN'S BODIES.

THIS RESULTED IN THE CREATION OF FOUR NEW UNITS OF ENGLISH 100 FOCUSED ON GENDER, ONE UNIT OF INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE FOCUSED ON SHORT FICTION WRITTEN BY WOMEN, AND ONE UNIT OF STUDIES IN WOMEN'S LITERATURE ON FOURTH WAVE FEMINISM.

IN ADDITION, I SPENT TIME LEARNING ABOUT EQUITABLE GRADING METHODS, AND I IMPLEMENTED NEW GRADING SYSTEMS IN ALL OF MY COURSES THAT ARE ROOTED IN EQUITY BASED PEDAGOGY. THE SECOND PART OF MY SABBATICAL WAS THE CREATION OF THE ENGLISH ADJUNCT ACADEMY.

SO A LITTLE CONTEXT.

AS ONE OF THE LARGEST DEPARTMENTS ON CAMPUS, THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT RELIES HEAVILY ON ADJUNCTS TO TEACH OUR COMPOSITION COURSES.

THIS SEMESTER, FOR EXAMPLE, WE HAVE OVER 40 ADJUNCTS, WHICH IS ACTUALLY ON THE LOW END.

CURRENTLY, 49 OF 80 SECTIONS OF ENGLISH 100 ARE BEING TAUGHT BY ADJUNCTS, 31 OUT OF 50 SECTIONS OF 103 ENGLISH, 103 ARE BEING TAUGHT BY ADJUNCTS THIS SEMESTER.

SO STATISTICALLY SPEAKING, OUR STUDENTS ARE MORE LIKELY TO HAVE AN ADJUNCT ENGLISH INSTRUCTOR THAN A FULL TIME FACULTY MEMBER FOR THEIR REQUIRED ENGLISH COURSES. IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS ALONE, WE AND THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT HAVE HAD TO ADAPT TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF AB 705 AND 1705, THE TRANSITION ONLINE.

DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, A DEMAND FOR EQUITABLE AND ANTI-RACIST PEDAGOGY, A PUSH FOR OERS AND CTCS, AND NOW THE RISE IN AI.

AS A FULL TIME FACULTY MEMBER, IT'S BEEN HARD TO KEEP UP WITH THESE CHANGES.

FOR ADJUNCTS WHO OFTEN DON'T HAVE THE TIME OR ACCESS TO DEVOTE TO PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, IT'S BEEN EVEN HARDER.

SO THE ADJUNCT ACADEMY IS AN ATTEMPT TO HELP.

OOPS. THE ADJUNCT ACADEMY IS A CANVAS BASED TRAINING AND COLLABORATIVE SPACE FOR ADJUNCTS IN THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT TO LEARN NEW TRENDS IN THE DISCIPLINE REVIEW BEST PRACTICES, SHARE RESOURCES, AND BUILD COMMUNITY.

IT CONTAINS SIX MODULES THE CULTURE OF CERRITOS COLLEGE, STARTING A SUCCESSFUL SEMESTER UNIT AND LESSON PLANNING, CREATING READING AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS, GRADING PRACTICES, AND STUDENT ENGAGEMENT.

ALL OF THE CONTENT IS ROOTED IN EQUITY BASED PEDAGOGY AND BEST PRACTICES FOR EFFECTIVE ONLINE INSTRUCTION.

OKAY, I HAVE A LITTLE TOUR.

HOPEFULLY WE CAN PLAY IT.

PERFECT. OKAY, SO I WANTED TO GIVE YOU A VISUAL OF WHAT THE ACADEMY IS LIKE.

SO AS I SAID, IT HAS SIX MODULES, INCLUDING A WELCOME MODULE AND A WRAP UP AND RESOURCE MODULE.

EACH MODULE THIS IS A SAMPLE MODULE ON GRADING PRACTICES.

EACH MODULE IS ABOUT 15 TO 18 PAGES.

IT BEGINS WITH A DISCUSSION.

THERE'S CONTENT A MID MODULE CHECK IN AND THEN A WRAP UP WHICH IS ANOTHER DISCUSSION.

I WANTED TO SHOW YOU AN EXAMPLE OF A DISCUSSION BECAUSE IT IS VERY ROBUST WHAT MY ADJUNCTS OR OUR ADJUNCTS WERE CONTRIBUTING.

I THINK OF THEM AS MY ADJUNCTS NOW BECAUSE THEY WERE MY COHORT.

WE WERE POSTING RUBRICS AND LINKS TO THINGS WE DO IN OUR CLASSES.

THE RESPONSES WERE SO ENGAGED.

WE DID VIDEOS AND VIDEO RESPONSES BECAUSE SO MANY OF US ARE TEACHING ONLINE, SO BEING COMFORTABLE ON VIDEO IS PART OF THAT.

THIS IS A SAMPLE CONTENT PAGE.

SO THIS WAS JUST A BRIEF OVERVIEW ON FELDMAN'S WORK ON GRADING FOR EQUITY, INCLUDING THE THREE PILLARS.

BUT MOST OF THE CONTENT PAGES, AS YOU'LL SEE HERE, ARE SPECIFIC.

SO THIS IS SOMETHING SPECIFICALLY YOU CAN DO IN YOUR CLASS WHEN YOUR STUDENTS REQUEST A REDO OR A RETAKE.

AND FOR EXAMPLE, IN THIS ONE, OUR COLLEAGUE ANGELA NAGLE WAS KIND ENOUGH TO LET ME USE HER ACTUAL RETAKE FORM.

THIS IS ON UNGRADING.

AND AGAIN, THINGS YOU CAN DO NOW TO BEGIN, UNGRADING AND LYNN SHERWIN AND NIKKI LOVEJOY, ROWOHLT WERE KIND ENOUGH TO LEND ME SOME RESOURCES THAT THEY USE IN THEIR CLASS AS WELL, SO I WANTED IT TO BE VERY PRACTICAL AS WELL AS, YOU KNOW, EXPOSING OUR ADJUNCTS TO FURTHER RESOURCES THAT THEY COULD LOOK INTO ON THEIR OWN AS THEY WERE INTERESTED IN THAT.

OKAY. SO I FACILITATED A PILOT LAST SUMMER OF THE ENTIRE ACADEMY WITH FIVE ADJUNCTS.

[01:05:06]

I LOOKED AT THE DATA FOR SPRING 2023.

SO THIS WAS THE SEMESTER BEFORE THEY DID THE ACADEMY, AND AS A COHORT, THEY HAD AN OVERALL SUCCESS RATE OF 63% IN THEIR COURSES FALL SEMESTER.

AFTER COMPLETING THE SUMMER SUMMER ACADEMY, THEY HAD A 72% SUCCESS RATE IN THEIR CLASSES.

SO IT'S A SMALL SAMPLE SIZE AND THERE'S CERTAINLY LOTS OF FACTORS TO CONSIDER, BUT I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT SUPPORTING OUR ADJUNCTS BENEFITS OUR STUDENTS, AND WE CAN SEE IT IN THE STUDENT SUCCESS DATA.

SO WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? I WANT TO CONTINUE DOING SUMMER COHORTS.

I'VE RECRUITED SIX ADJUNCTS ALREADY FOR THIS SUMMER, SO WE'LL GO THROUGH THE ACADEMY AGAIN WITH SIX NEW ADJUNCTS.

IN ADDITION TO INCREASING SUPPORT FOR ADJUNCTS IN THE DEPARTMENT HOLISTICALLY, ULTIMATELY, I WANT TO WORK WITH THE CJ TO TRY TO EXPAND THE ADJUNCT ACADEMY ACROSS CAMPUS. SO THAT'S SOMETHING THAT I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO DOING IN THE FUTURE.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THIS SABBATICAL, AND I HOPE I HAVE YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT TO FURTHER DEVELOP THE ACADEMY.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

AND I'LL HAND IT TO DOCTOR RAINA LIU.

OKAY. HI, EVERYONE.

I'M DOCTOR RINA LIU FROM THE CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT AND SEM DIVISION.

SO MY DIVISION TEAM.

SO THE OBJECTIVE OF MY SABBATICAL IS TO TRANSLATE RESEARCH INTO PRACTICE.

SPECIFICALLY IS TO IMPLEMENT IMPLEMENT MY PREVIOUS ED RESEARCH AT USC IN THE EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY AND LEARNING THEORIES INTO CHEM 211 AND 212 ORGANIC CHEMISTRY CURRICULUM.

AND IN MY RESEARCH, I'VE DEVELOPED A STUDENT CENTERED TALE APPROACH DEFINED AS TECHNOLOGY ASSISTED INQUIRY LEARNING AS A PEDAGOGICAL SHIFT FROM THE TEACHER CENTERED DIRECT INSTRUCTION APPROACH. AND SO I HAVE SO THIS APPROACH I THEN USE IT AS A THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK TO DEVELOP THE TAIL COMPUTER SIMULATION PROGRAMS INCORPORATING THESE FOUR RESEARCH INFORMED COMPONENTS WHICH ARE INQUIRY, GUIDANCE, COLLABORATION AND TECHNOLOGY. SO OKAY, BEFORE THIS SABBATICAL, I HAD DEVELOPED THE TWO RESEARCH BASED TALE PROGRAMS TO TEACH NOMENCLATURE AND TITRATION FOR CHEM 110.

THAT'S ELEMENTARY CHEMISTRY COURSE.

AND THESE TWO PROGRAMS SO FAR HAVE BEEN USED BY OVER 30 INSTRUCTORS AND 8000 STUDENT USERS ACROSS 200 LAB SESSIONS AND ENCOURAGED BY THE PROMISING RESULTS.

SO FOR THIS SABBATICAL, I DECIDED TO CREATE ANOTHER TALE PROGRAM TO TEACH SPECTROSCOPY FOR BOTH CHEM 211 AND 212. SPECTROSCOPY HAS BEEN REGARDED BY MANY PEOPLE AS THE MOST DIFFICULT TOPIC IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, BECAUSE THE PROBLEM SOLVING INVOLVES MANY DOZENS OF THE STEPS THAT TO HANDLE SIMULTANEOUSLY SO THAT CAN LEAD TO FRUSTRATIONS AND EVENTUALLY STUDENT DROPOUTS.

SO IF YOU LOOK AT THIS EXAMPLE, THIS ONE COMPOUND, IT HAS ONLY SEVEN CARBONS, BUT IT CAN HAVE 569 POSSIBLE ISOMERS.

AND EACH OF THEM WOULD GIVE A UNIQUE CHARACTERISTIC NMR SPECTRUM.

SO THE STUDENTS ARE GIVEN THIS ONE SPECTRUM AND THEY HAVE TO FIGURE OUT THAT ONE CHEMICAL STRUCTURE OUT OF THE 569 POSSIBILITIES, OR ON THE OTHER HAND, THEY CAN BE GIVEN ONE STRUCTURE AND THEY HAVE TO PREDICT THE UNIQUE SPECTRUM, WHICH YOU CAN IMAGINE USUALLY ARE OVERWHELMING FOR MANY STUDENTS.

SO DURING MY SABBATICAL, I'VE DEVELOPED THIS PROGRAM AND AFTER I RETURNED TO CAMPUS, IMPLEMENTED INTO BOTH CAMP TO 11 TO 12 COURSES.

SO THIS PROGRAM HAS FOR PRIOR KNOWLEDGE ACTIVATION SCREENS INDICATED BY THE PK ONE THROUGH PK FOUR, FOLLOWED BY A LENGTHY PROBLEM SET. AND THEN THERE'S ALSO A PRETEST AND POST-TEST TO ASSESS STUDENT LEARNING.

SO THIS SCREEN YOU SEE THE BLUE BACKGROUND.

THIS IS THE ANSWER KEY FOR THE PROBLEM.

THAT AND YOU CAN SEE IT INVOLVES MANY TEDIOUS STEPS FOR ONE PROBLEM.

AND THE PROGRAM ALSO EMBEDDED OVER 400 CHECKPOINTS FOR INDIVIDUALIZED GUIDANCE AND 28 SIMULATION PRACTICES.

[01:10:08]

SO OKAY.

AND I HAVE ALSO CREATED A UNIQUE FEATURE TO ALLOW A BACK END INSTRUCTOR DASHBOARD THAT PROVIDES THE INSTANT REPORT OF STUDENT REAL TIME PROGRESS, SO THE INSTRUCTOR CAN SEE WHERE THE PROGRAM IS WORKING ALONG THE PROGRAM AT THE REAL TIME, AND HOPEFULLY TO ENHANCE THE INSTRUCTOR ROLE AS BOTH A FACILITATOR AND A ONE ON ONE MENTOR OR TUTOR SO THEY CAN OFFER THE INDIVIDUAL HELP.

AND I ALSO CONDUCTED A PILOT TEST THANKS TO THE SUPPORT FROM MY COLLEAGUES.

THE RESULTS WERE PROMISING A SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED STUDENT LEARNING COMPARED TO TRADITIONAL APPROACHES.

SO IF YOU LOOK AT THE CONTROL GROUP BETWEEN THE PRETEST AND THE POST-TEST IN STUDENT LEARNING INCREASED FROM 30% TO 51%, AND THIS IS AFTER TWO OUR TRADITIONAL METHOD OF USING THE PAPER AND PENCIL.

BUT THE 50% ON THE POST-TEST IS CONSISTENT TO THE 49% FOR THE GROUP C, WHICH IS THE CAMP TO 12 STUDENTS.

THEY HAVE ALREADY HAD A THOROUGH IMMERSION IN THE TOPIC AFTER ONE SEMESTER, BUT I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE ON THE PRETEST THAT THEY WERE ONLY ABLE TO GET 49%.

BUT LUCKILY, AFTER THE ONE HOUR PARTIAL TAIL PROGRAM, THEY REACHED THE 93%.

AND SO AFTER THAT, I FINE TUNED THE PROGRAM AND ENHANCE IT FURTHER.

SO WITH THE GROUP A AND GROUP B, THEY WERE USING THE FULL VERSION OF THE TAIL PROGRAM AND BOTH GROUP REACHED A PLACE.

SO AFTER TWO HOURS OF USING THE PROGRAM AND ALSO BECAUSE THEY, YOU KNOW, THESE THREE PROGRAMS, THEY HAD A DIFFERENT PRIOR KNOWLEDGE LEVEL, BUT EVENTUALLY THEY ALL REACH THE SAME LEVEL.

SO THE PROGRAM ALSO HELPS TO REDUCE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP AMONG STUDENTS WITH DIVERSE LEVELS OF PRIOR KNOWLEDGE, FOSTERING MORE EQUITABLE LEARNING OUTCOMES.

AND THESE ARE THE STUDENT POSITIVE REMARKS REGARDING WHAT THEY LEARNED, HOW THE PROGRAM HELPED THEM LEARN, ESPECIALLY INCLUDING THE IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK, THE GOOD ORGANIZER DESIGN, COLLABORATIVE LEARNING THAT THE PROGRAM ALLOWS, AND MORE VISUAL FEATURES.

SO IN SUMMARY, THE RESEARCH BASED PROGRAM, BY INCORPORATING THE THESE COMPONENTS INCLUDING THE INQUIRY GUIDANCE, COLLABORATION AND TECHNOLOGY EMBODY OUR COLLEGE'S MISSION TO IMPROVE STUDENT LEARNING AND ALSO EQUITABLE LEARNING THROUGH THE INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY.

SO MANY THANKS TO THE BOARD AND TO THE SABBATICAL LEAVE COMMITTEE, AND TO MY COLLEAGUES AND MY STUDENTS OF THE CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT AND SEM DIVISION.

SO THANK YOU EVERYONE, AND I'LL PASS IT TO MIKE.

HI EVERYONE. MY NAME IS NIKKI LOVEJOY.

I TEACH IN THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT AND MY SABBATICAL PROJECT IS ON SEMINAR STYLE FRESHMAN COMPOSITION.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL, THE SABBATICAL LEAVE COMMITTEE, COLLEAGUES IN THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT, MY SABBATICAL BUDDIES CHAD AND COLLEEN AND MY FAMILY.

SO OKAY, HERE WE GO WITH CONDENSING A COUPLE OF YEARS WORTH OF WORK INTO FIVE MINUTES, I'M GOING TO DO MY BEST TO GIVE THE HIGHLIGHTS, FOCUS ON WHAT I LEARNED AND HOW I'M APPLYING WHAT I LEARNED THROUGHOUT MY PROJECT.

SO I SEE A LOT OF STUDENTS CHALLENGED BY FIGURING OUT HOW TO NAVIGATE COLLEGE AND HOW TO BE COLLEGE STUDENTS.

I SEE STRUGGLES WITH MANAGING TIME.

OFTEN STUDENTS ARE UNAWARE OF THE UNIT TO HOUR RATIO THEY SEE.

TAKING 3 OR 4 CLASSES IS NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL, BUT THEY ARE UNAWARE THAT TAKING 12 UNITS A SEMESTER MEANS THAT THEY ARE SPENDING 36 HOURS A WEEK EVERY WEEK FOR 18 WEEKS ON THEIR CLASSES.

AND THAT'S IN ADDITION TO JOBS, FAMILY, SOCIAL AND OTHER PERSONAL OBLIGATIONS.

THEY JUST KNOW THAT THEY'RE TAKING THREE CLASSES.

BUT THOSE CLASSES ARE FOUR UNIT CLASSES.

SO MANAGING TASKS, OBLIGATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES ARE REALLY TOUGH WHEN COUPLED WITH THE MENTAL LOAD OF NAVIGATING MULTIPLE CLASSES IN DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES WITH DIFFERENT CANVAS CLASS APPEARANCES, POLICIES, ASSIGNMENTS, NORMS AND READINGS, AND ALL OF THIS WHILE LEARNING THEIR COURSE CONTENT.

SO SEMINAR STYLE CLASSES ARE OFTEN STUDENT CENTERED, COLLABORATIVE, AND VERY ACTIVE.

THE CURRICULUM IS OFTEN DRIVEN BY STUDENTS BASED ON THEIR INTERESTS, FOR EXAMPLE, THEIR MAJORS, AND IS RELEVANT TO THEIR LIVES NAVIGATING COLLEGE.

FOR EXAMPLE, MEANINGFUL CURRICULUM OF SEMINARS CAN BE ADDRESSED THROUGH READINGS, ACTIVITIES AND INCLUDE HIGH IMPACT ASSIGNMENTS.

[01:15:02]

I'M CURRENTLY PILOTING PILOTING A SEMINAR STYLE ENGLISH 100 S STARTING IN FALL 2023 AND OVER THREE SEMESTERS.

I HAVE TWO HYBRID SECTIONS EACH SEMESTER, AND THEY HAVE A DEA FRAMEWORK WHERE I'M FOCUSING ON ACCESSIBILITY FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE NEURODIVERGENT.

IN ADDITION TO THE ACTIVE LEARNING OF SEMINAR OF A SEMINAR CLASS, THEY HAVE CAMPUS SUPPORT AND WELL-BEING BUILT INTO THEM.

I AM INTENTIONALLY BUILDING CAMPUS SUPPORT INTO THE CLASSES, SINCE ENGLISH 100 S HAS AN ADDITIONAL HOUR BUILT INTO THE CLASS.

I'VE COLLABORATED WITH STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES ACROSS CAMPUS TO BRING GUIDANCE TO STUDENTS IN A TIMELY WAY.

FOR EXAMPLE, STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES FACILITATES ANXIETY WORKSHOPS DURING THE LAST THREE WEEKS OF INSTRUCTION OF THE CLASS JUST BEFORE FINALS AND EARLIER THIS SEMESTER, WE TOOK A TOUR OF STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES AND THE CLASS WAS ABLE TO SEE THE FACILITY, LEARN ABOUT SERVICES OFFERED FOR FREE, AND EXPERIENCED THE NEW MEDITATION ROOM, WHICH IS AMAZING.

I CANNOT RECOMMEND IT ENOUGH.

THIS WEEK, COUNSELING HAS VERY GENEROUSLY PROVIDED TIME TO TALK ABOUT REGISTERING.

OOPS, SORRY, GOT A LITTLE EXCITED WITH THE CLICKER.

SO COUNSELING HAS COME TO CLASS TO TALK ABOUT REGISTERING FOR SUMMER AND FALL CLASSES, CONNECTING WITH LSPS, MAKING AN APPOINTMENT, AND IDENTIFYING STRATEGIES FOR A SUCCESSFUL COUNSELING APPOINTMENT AS PART OF THE CLASS.

MINDFULNESS ACTIVITIES ARE PART OF EVERY ASSIGNMENT TO HELP MANAGE THE BIG FEELINGS THAT STUDENTS OFTEN EXPERIENCE IN WRITING CLASSES, AND HAVING AN EMBEDDED TUTOR HAS BEEN A KEY COMPONENT FOR THE CLASS.

OUR EMBEDDED TUTOR REACHES OUT TO STUDENTS, PROVIDES A LOT OF WRITING ASSISTANCE, AND IDENTIFIES PLACES WHERE MORE GUIDANCE IS NEEDED.

FOR EXAMPLE, WE RECENTLY NOTICED A STUDENT USING A UNETHICALLY AND WE WERE ABLE TO DEVELOP A PLAN TO SUPPORT THE STUDENT IN LEARNING HOW TO USE AI IN AN ETHICAL WAY.

LET'S BE CLEAR, I AM PRO AI USE AND A SUPPORTIVE AND ETHICAL WAY.

SO THE RESEARCH THROUGHOUT MY SABBATICAL INCLUDED EXPLORING DIFFERENT GRADING PRACTICES, TECHNOLOGY THAT IS ENHANCING STUDENT EXPERIENCES IN THE CLASSROOM, STUDENT CENTERED AND HIGH IMPACT PRACTICES, NEURODIVERSITY I, AND CONTEXTUALLY RELEVANT READINGS AND ASSIGNMENTS.

I USE HYPOTHESIS, ADOBE, SPARK, AND CITY LABS TO ENHANCE THE CLASS APPEARANCE AND CREATE SPACES FOR STUDENTS TO COLLABORATE IN THEIR LEARNING IN MULTI AND MULTIMODAL WAYS.

IN OUR ESSAY UNITS, WE EXPLORE AI IN COLLEGE, WRITING AND NAVIGATING THE HIDDEN RULES OF BEING A COLLEGE STUDENT.

AND FOR THE RESEARCH PROJECT, STUDENTS CAN CHOOSE TO EITHER EXAMINE THE COST OF ATTENDING COLLEGE NOT RELATED TO TUITION AND FEES, OR TO EXPLORE THE WAYS THEIR MAJORS CONNECT WITH AND BENEFIT SOCIETY.

THERE'S A LOT OF FLEXIBILITY FOR STUDENTS TO MAKE THEIR ASSIGNMENTS AND THEIR ESSAYS THEIR OWN, AND THEY CAN CREATE MEMES AND BLOG POSTS AS PART OF THEIR WRITING PROCESS AND CONTINUE TO DEVELOP THOSE IDEAS IN ADOBE SPARK WEB PAGE FOR THEIR ESSAYS.

SO THE GOAL FOR MY SEMINAR STYLE ENGLISH 100 S IS TO MOVE AWAY FROM THIS AND MOVE TOWARD SUPPORTING STUDENTS IN THEIR EDUCATION WITH ATTENTION ON THEIR WELLBEING AND INTERESTS.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

ANY QUESTIONS? I WANT TO THANK ALL THE INSTRUCTORS THAT HAD THE SABBATICAL.

GREAT PRESENTATIONS.

I CAN SEE THAT IT'S GOING TO BRING A LOT OF WEALTH TO OUR FUTURE STUDENTS THAT ARE TAKING THESE CLASSES, AND IT WILL ENHANCE, ENHANCE ALL OUR COURSEWORK.

AND I CAN SEE HOW YOU'RE GOING TO BE ASSISTING OTHER INSTRUCTORS OF BRINGING EVERYTHING THAT YOU'VE LEARNED LIKE THE ACADEMY THAT YOU'RE GOING TO SET UP.

I THINK THAT IS THAT IS PHENOMENAL.

AND IT WILL HELP EVERYONE ALL ALL INSTRUCTORS AND ESPECIALLY OUR STUDENTS IN THEIR LEARNING EXPERIENCE.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

THANK, THANK YOU. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE WORK.

I, I'M TRYING TO SAY WHICH ONE IS MY FAVORITE.

I'M A LITTLE BIASED ON THE CHEMISTRY PART.

BUT I TRULY ENJOY ALL THE, ALL THE PROJECTS.

I THINK COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE GOING TO BENEFIT SIGNIFICANTLY FOR THE WORK THAT YOU'RE DOING.

AND ACTUALLY, AS ALL OF YOU WERE MENTIONING THAT YOU HAD THE TIME TO READ AND TO THINK AND TO DO THIS AND THAT.

I WAS JUST KIND OF DAYDREAMING ON, YOU KNOW, HOW HOW WOULD I DO THAT AND WHAT IT WOULD BE TO READ THAT MUCH.

I DO LIKE TO READ, BUT OBVIOUSLY IT'S A DIFFERENT VOLUME THAT I CAN DO AT THIS PARTICULAR TIME.

BUT BUT I FIND THAT REFRESHING.

SO THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME LIVE VICARIOUSLY THROUGH YOU.

ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS?

[01:20:02]

YES. I JUST ALSO WANT TO SAY THANK YOU.

IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AN AN AN ABSOLUTE PLEASURE TO HEAR EACH OF THE PRESENTATIONS.

BUT WHAT I TRULY LOVED ABOUT IT IS THAT YOU ARE REALLY TAPPING INTO THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS, AND YOUR WORK IS JUST.

I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE SUCCESS THAT YOUR WORK IS GOING TO HAVE IN FUTURE COURSES.

ESPECIALLY WITH THEM BEING SO RELEVANT AND ENGAGING AND MEETING LIKE THAT CULTURAL PEDAGOGY THAT'S NEEDED IN OUR CLASSES TODAY.

SO I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU.

CULTURALLY RELEVANT PEDAGOGY.

THANK YOU. I ALSO WANT TO THANK FOR ALL THE PROFESSORS.

AND I HOPE YOU ALSO ENJOY THAT.

THANK YOU. NO FURTHER COMMENTS.

OKAY. THEN WE WILL BE MOVING ON TO OUR INSTITUTIONAL PRESENTATION ON HUMAN

[2.04 REVISED: Institutional Presentation: Human Resources' DEIA Updates]

RESOURCES.

GOOD EVENING. I WILL BE BRIEF.

TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY.

OKAY. OKAY.

I AM ACTUALLY VERY HAPPY TO BE DOING THIS PRESENTATION BECAUSE I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR MONTHS AND MONTHS AND MONTHS AND MONTHS.

WE HAVE FINALLY RECEIVED OUR FEEDBACK FROM THE STATE CHANCELLOR'S OFFICE REGARDING THE DRAFT EEO PLAN, NOT THE ACTUAL APPROVED ONE, AS YOU WILL RECALL. WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL CHANGES UNDER TITLE FIVE REGARDING THE PRESENTATION AND SUBMISSION OF THE EEO PLAN.

A A DRAFT IS ACTUALLY REQUIRED TO BE SUBMITTED TO THE STATE CHANCELLOR'S OFFICE 90 DAYS BEFORE WE ATTEMPT TO BRING IT TO YOU SO THAT THEY CAN GIVE US FEEDBACK AND RECOMMENDATIONS. SO THE PLAN WAS SUBMITTED BACK IN SEPTEMBER.

WE RECEIVED IT ON FEBRUARY 28TH.

I'M SORRY. FEBRUARY 29TH.

AND THE FEEDBACK WE RECEIVED, I'M VERY PLEASANTLY SURPRISED.

WAS VERY MINIMAL.

AND IT WILL HELP US CARRY THE WORK FORWARD IN TERMS OF WORKING WITH THE DIVERSITY, EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY.

THE DISTRICT EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE, THERE WERE 33 CATEGORIES WHICH INCLUDED FEEDBACK ON COMPONENT 13, WHICH IS NOW A VERY, VERY DETAILED ACTION PLAN OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS.

THAT IS THE AREA WHERE WE GOT MOST OF THE FEEDBACK FROM WHICH AGAIN, IS MINIMAL.

THREE AREAS, NO FEEDBACK, MINIMAL FEEDBACK AND EXTENDED FEEDBACK.

AND 33 CATEGORIES ARE ACTUALLY REVIEWED, OF WHICH WE ONLY RECEIVED FEEDBACK ON FOUR, WHICH MEANT THAT WE DID REALLY WELL.

WE RECEIVED MINIMAL FEEDBACK ON FOUR, WHICH WERE BASICALLY ELABORATION OF ITEMS REGARDING SOME OF OUR POLICIES.

IN ADDITION TO SOME OF THE WAYS THAT WE TRACK OUR DATA.

AND THEN ULTIMATELY ENCOURAGING OUR EMPLOYEES TO PARTICIPATE IN EXIT SURVEYS AS THEY TRANSITION.

THE AREAS THAT WE RECEIVED EXTENDED FEEDBACK ON WERE TWO.

TO WHICH, ONE OF WHICH WE ARE VERY OPTIMISTIC.

WE WILL DEVELOP IN FULL DETAIL, WHICH WAS THE FEEDBACK REGARDING OUR MENTORING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR OUR EMPLOYEES.

AND ALL WE DID WAS LIST THAT WE WERE WORKING ON SPECIFIC PROJECTS.

WE DIDN'T GO INTO THEM IN FULL DETAIL MOSTLY BECAUSE THERE WAS NO SPACE TO GO INTO FULL DETAIL.

BUT NOW THAT WE KNOW THAT'S THE AREA OF CONCERN, WE WILL WE WILL GIVE THEM ALL THE DETAILS THEY WANT.

THE OTHER AREA OF FEEDBACK HAS TO DO WITH APPEALS AND COMPLAINTS UNDER TITLE FIVE.

THAT AREA IS IMPACTED BY THE THE FEDERAL LEGISLATION.

WE WILL TAKE THE FEEDBACK THEY HAVE PROVIDED US INTO ACCOUNT, BUT MY RECOMMENDATION TO THE DISTRICT ADVISORY COMMITTEE WILL BE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THE RECOMMENDATIONS AND PRESENT SOMETHING TO YOU HOPEFULLY IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS SO THAT WE CAN MOVE FORWARD AND IMPLEMENT OUR EEO PLAN IN THE FULL CAPACITY THAT WE INTEND TO DO SO.

AND THAT'S IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? SEEING NONE, WE WILL MOVE FORWARD TO OUR NEXT AGENDA ITEM.

[2.05 Institutional Presentation: Data Snippet from the Office of Institutional Research, Planning, and Grants]

OUR NEXT AGENDA ITEM IS AN INSTITUTIONAL PRESENTATION DATA SNIPPET FROM THE OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH, PLANNING AND GRANTS.

THANK YOU.

GOOD EVENING EVERYONE.

SO TONIGHT I'LL BE SHARING A DATA SNIPPET ON LAST YEAR'S CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION OUTCOME SURVEY OR CTLS.

SO I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT THAT THE RESULTS FROM THIS PRESENTATION ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT TIES TO DOCTOR FARRELL'S PRESENTATION FROM THE LAST BOARD MEETING AROUND THE IMPACT

[01:25:08]

CERRITOS COLLEGE HAS ON THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL MOBILITY WITHIN OUR COMMUNITIES.

SO THE CTLS, OR CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION OUTCOME SURVEY TRACKS OUR STUDENTS INTO THE WORKFORCE AND GETS THE PERCEPTIONS OF THE PROGRAM.

SO THE SURVEYS, FUNDED THROUGH CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE CHANCELLOR'S OFFICE, BUT IT'S ADMINISTERED BY SANTA ROSA JUNIOR COLLEGE.

SO THE BIG QUESTIONS THE SURVEY ASKS ARE, DO OUR CTE STUDENTS FIND JOBS IN THEIR FIELD? DO THEY SEE AN INCREASE IN INCOME AFTER THEY COMPLETE OUR STUDENTS SATISFIED WITH THEIR PROGRAM? IN OTHER WORDS, IS THE PROGRAM WORTH IT? SO LIKE I MENTIONED BEFORE, WE WORK WITH SANTA ROSA JUNIOR COLLEGE.

THEY WORK WITH THE ER OFFICES, AND SO WE PROVIDE THEM A CONTACT LIST AROUND THE INFORMATION IN THE TABLE.

SO STUDENTS WHO EITHER COMPLETE A DEGREE OR CERTIFICATE, WHO ARE NOT ENROLLED IN THE NEXT YEAR, OR SKILLS BUILDER STUDENTS.

SO STUDENTS WHO EARN NINE OR MORE CTE UNITS WHO DIDN'T EARN AN AWARD, WHO AREN'T ENROLLED IN THE FOLLOWING YEAR.

SO LAST YEAR WE HAD A SUCCESSFUL RESPONSE RATE OF 23%, WHICH IS ON PAR WITH THE STATEWIDE AVERAGE.

TYPICALLY, RESPONSE RATES FOR SURVEYS ARE AROUND 10 TO 15% IN HIGHER EDUCATION, BUT BECAUSE THEY EMAIL, TEXTS AND CALL STUDENTS, OUR RESPONSE RATES ARE TYPICALLY HIGHER FOR THIS SURVEY IN PARTICULAR.

SO THERE'S TWO MAIN TAKEAWAYS I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL TONIGHT.

SO THE FIRST IS THAT OUR CTE STUDENTS EARN MORE MONEY AFTER THEIR TRAINING COMING TO CERRITOS.

AND OUR STUDENTS ARE SATISFIED WITH THEIR TRAINING AT CERRITOS.

SO THROUGH THESE WAGE GAINS, WE'RE SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS ECONOMIC MOBILITY.

SO STUDENTS IN THIS SURVEY INDICATED THAT THEY MADE $18 AN HOUR BEFORE THEY CAME TO CERRITOS.

AND THEN AFTER THEIR TRAINING, THEY'RE EARNING $28.85.

SO THAT'S A 60% INCREASE IN HOURLY WAGES AFTER COMPLETING TRAINING AT CERRITOS.

ANOTHER PIECE I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT IS THAT 87% OF THE STUDENTS INDICATED BEING CURRENTLY EMPLOYED, WHICH IS HIGHER THAN THE STATEWIDE AVERAGE AT 81%.

SO THE SECOND PIECE IS THAT STUDENTS ARE SATISFIED WITH THEIR TRAINING AT CERRITOS.

SO OUR RESULTS SHOW THAT STUDENTS ARE QUICKLY FINDING FULL TIME EMPLOYMENT IN THEIR PROGRAM OF STUDY.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT PIECE THAT THE SURVEY INDICATES IS THAT STUDENTS WHO WORK CLOSELY IN THEIR PROGRAM OF STUDY, OR IN A FIELD RELATED TO THEIR PROGRAM OF STUDY, MAKE MORE MONEY THAN THOSE WHO DON'T.

SO FROM THE RESULTS, WE SEE THAT STUDENTS HAVE A LOT TO GAIN IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME.

THE TRAINING THOUGH, DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THE END FOR STUDENTS.

SO AT CERRITOS COLLEGE, WE OFFER STACKABLE CREDENTIALS.

THEY ALSO CAN GO FOR THEIR ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE AND BACHELOR'S DEGREE.

SO ONE POINT THAT DOCTOR FARROW HIGHLIGHTED AT THE LAST BOARD MEETING THAT I WANT TO EMPHASIZE IS STUDENTS WHO EARN AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE, THEIR AVERAGE LIFETIME EARNINGS ARE $1 MILLION MORE.

SIMILARLY, FOR A BACHELOR'S PROGRAM, THEIR AVERAGE EARNINGS OVER A LIFETIME IS $3 MILLION MORE.

SO THIS EDUCATION THAT STUDENTS ARE GETTING, IT OPENS THE DOOR FOR THEM TO CONTINUE ON.

SO AGAIN, RESULTS ARE POSITIVE.

AND THAT OUR CTE STUDIES AT CERRITOS IS RELATED TO POSITIVE EMPLOYMENT OUTCOMES.

AND STUDENTS DO FIND VALUE IN OUR CTE PROGRAMS. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? OKAY I DO.

OH SORRY. YEAH I DO SEE THAT WE ONLY HAD A 23% RESPONSE RATE.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT OF WAYS THAT WE CAN GET MORE STUDENTS ENGAGED WITH THE SURVEY FOR THE FUTURE? YEAH. SO SANTA ROSA JUNIOR COLLEGE ACTUALLY DOES ALL THE ADMINISTERING OF THE SURVEY.

IT'S ACTUALLY A PRETTY HIGH RESPONSE RATE WHEN YOU LOOK AT OTHER SURVEYS IN EDUCATION, AND WE'RE ON PAR WITH THE STATEWIDE AVERAGE, I THINK THE HIGHEST I SAW WAS AROUND LIKE 35% FOR OTHER CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES.

BUT THEY DO INITIALLY SEND OUT AN EMAIL AND THEN THEY TEXT STUDENTS AND THEN THEY CALL THEM.

SO THEY'RE DOING ALL THAT THEY CAN TO REALLY GET RESPONSE RATES.

OKAY. THANK YOU.

YEAH. THAT'S 60% INCREASE IN EARNINGS IS HOW OUR GRADUATES ARE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE $378 MILLION A YEAR TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY.

SO YOU KNOW, IT'S WORTHWHILE INVESTMENT.

IT'S ALSO GREAT TO SEE THAT 92% WERE SATISFIED WITH TRAINING.

SO THAT'S YOU KNOW, I FEEL A GREAT PERCENTAGE IN REGARD TO THEIR EXPERIENCE HERE AT CERRITOS.

YEAH. OUR OUR PERCENTAGES ARE HIGHER THAN THE STATE AS WELL.

SO STUDENTS ARE ACTUALLY MORE SATISFIED THAN THE STATEWIDE AVERAGE AND OTHER COLLEGES IN THE LOCAL AREA.

SO WE'RE DOING A GOOD JOB.

[01:30:03]

THANK YOU. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? OKAY. SEEING NONE WE'RE GOING TO MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ITEM, WHICH IS OUR CONSENT ITEMS.

[3. Consent Items]

DOES ANYONE WANT TO PULL A CONSENT ITEM? I'D LIKE TO PULL ITEM 3.26.

OKAY. ANYONE ELSE WOULD LIKE TO PULL AN ITEM? SEEING? NONE.

IS THERE ANY OBJECTIONS TO THE CONSENT CALENDAR? WITH PULLING ITEM 3.26? SEEING NO OBJECTIONS WE WILL NOW GO AHEAD AND CONSIDER ITEM THE CONSENT CALENDAR IS APPROVED AND WE MOVE TO ITEM 3.26.

[3.26 Conference Request for Travel Outside the United States – Taiwan and China]

SO I CANNOT SUPPORT THE CURRENT ITEM IN ITS CURRENT FORM, BECAUSE I DON'T BELIEVE THAT WE SHOULD BE USING OUR TAX DOLLARS TO PURSUE AN AGREEMENT WITH HUAZHONG UNIVERSITY, WHICH IS IN WUHAN.

AS YOU KNOW, THE EPICENTER OF COVID AND IS ALSO IN A NATION THAT IS NOT EXACTLY OUR FRIEND.

AT THE VERY BEST, WE ARE COMPETITORS AND AT WORST WE ARE SOMETHING MORE SINISTER.

AND I DON'T BELIEVE THAT IT IS SOMETHING THAT WE SHOULD HAVE AND THAT WE SHOULD HAVE A COOPERATION WITH BECAUSE YOU KNOW, TAIWAN, THE OTHER PLACE THAT WE HAVE AN AGREEMENT WITH JUST IN THE LAST MONTH OR SO, WE HAD ACKNOWLEDGED THAT US TROOPS ARE STATIONED IN THE IN THE ISLANDS ON THE TAIWAN STRAIT, AND TENSIONS CONTINUE TO RISE WITH MAINLAND CHINA HAVING HAD OUR ONE OF OUR NAVY SHIPS GO DOWN THE STRAIT TO SHOW MILITARY MIND, WHATEVER IT MIGHT BE.

BUT I DON'T BELIEVE THAT WE SHOULD BE TAKING THE SIDE AND HAVING AN AGREEMENT WITH A NATION THAT HAS HAD MANY HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS, THAT HAS HAD CYBERSECURITY THREATS AGAINST OUR OWN NATION THAT DOES NOT VALUE FREEDOM, AND A NATION THAT DOESN'T HAVE THE VALUES OF CERRITOS COLLEGE.

SO TO THAT END, I WOULD FIRST ASK FOR A FRIENDLY AMENDMENT TO AND TO DIVIDE THE ITEM INTO TWO DIFFERENT PLACES WHERE WE HAVE JUST HUAZHONG AS ONE ITEM TO VOTE ON, AND ALL THE OTHER INSTITUTIONS WHICH ARE PLACED IN TAIWAN TO BE ABLE TO VOTE ON THOSE, BECAUSE I HAVE NO PROBLEM. AND IN FACT, I'VE BEEN ONE OF THE STRONGEST SUPPORTERS OF HAVING A HAVING A PARTNERSHIP WITH TAIWAN AND ALL OF ITS EDUCATION PROGRAM. I WENT IN 2018 WITH DOCTOR LIU AND OTHERS TO SEE FOR MYSELF WHAT PARTNERSHIPS WE HAVE WITH TAIWAN, WHICH IS A FREEDOM LOVING AND DEMOCRATIC PLACE.

AND I COULD NOT BE MORE SUPPORTIVE OF THAT.

I WOULD REALLY WANT TO VOTE TO CONTINUE THAT PARTNERSHIP WITH THEM.

HOWEVER I CANNOT DO IT IN ITS CURRENT FORM, WHICH INCLUDES HUAZHONG UNIVERSITY.

SO I WOULD ASK THE I GUESS TECHNICALLY YOU'RE NOT THE MOTION MAKER IN THE SENSE OF ROBERT'S RULES OF ORDER, BUT I WOULD I GUESS, MAKE A MOTION TO DIVIDE THE ITEM, AND THAT WOULD TAKE A SECOND.

OKAY. IN THE MANNER THAT I'VE DESCRIBED.

SO THE MOTION IS TO DIVIDE THE ITEM.

ONE IS THE GOING TO TAIWAN.

AND THE OTHER ONE IS SEPARATING OUT THE ITEM FOR CHINA THAT THAT WOULD JUST BE.

YEAH. SEPARATING OUT THE TWO HUAZHONG UNIVERSITY VISITS AND THEN HAVING PROVIDENCE CHILI, NEW TAIPEI AND TAIPEI CITY AS ONE ITEM.

SO THAT'S THAT WOULD BE MY MOTION TO DIVIDE THE ITEM.

IS THERE A SECOND BEFORE BEFORE YOU VOTE, LET ME LET ME LET ME CLARIFY.

SO WE'RE SAYING THE WE WILL MODIFY THE CURRENT ITEM AND VOTE ON AUTHORIZING THE PARTNERSHIP AND THE TRIP WITH THE UNIVERSITIES IN TAIWAN.

YEAH. SO SPECIFICALLY, YEAH, SPECIFICALLY AUTHORIZING THE CONFERENCE REQUEST FOR DOCTOR LIU TO TRAVEL FOR A PERIOD NOT TO EXCEED JUNE 20TH 7TH TO JULY 22ND TO MAKE THE CULTURAL EXCHANGES AND MAKE AN AGREEMENT WITH PROVIDENCE, CHILE, NEW TAIPEI AND TAIPEI CITY.

THAT WOULD BE ONE ITEM.

OKAY. SEPARATELY, CONSIDER THE SAME THING THAT I DESCRIBED WITH HUAZHONG.

HUAZHONG. OKAY, OKAY.

IS THERE A SECOND? THERE'S I SECOND IT.

CAN I SAY I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR POLITICAL POINT OF VIEW, BUT AS A PROFESSOR AND THIS IS ACADEMIC

[01:35:05]

FREEDOM, AND WE ARE TALKING ABOUT YOU KNOW, LEARNING THE, YOU KNOW, THE ACADEMIC THING.

SO REALLY, I REALLY APPRECIATE I KNOW YOU ARE YOU HAVE YOUR POINT OF VIEW, BUT I JUST EXPLAINED TO YOU YOU KNOW, SO IT IT'S NOT GOING OVER THERE TO DISCUSS POLITICAL ISSUES INSTEAD OF IS ACADEMIC CHANGE EXCHANGE THE INFORMATION ABOUT ACADEMICALLY.

YOU KNOW, I UNDERSTAND THAT.

SO SO I DON'T BELIEVE IT'S AN ACADEMIC FREEDOM ISSUE.

YOU KNOW, WE'RE NOT GOING AS A PROFESSOR.

WE'RE GOING AS A REPRESENTATIVE OF A GOVERNMENTAL AGENCY.

SO, YOU KNOW, ACADEMIC FREEDOM IS SOMETHING THAT YOU MAY PURSUE, CERTAINLY AS A PROFESSOR.

BUT IN THIS CAPACITY AS A TRUSTEE, I DON'T THINK THAT WE SHOULD BE GOING FORWARD.

AND THAT'S WHY I HAVE THIS MOTION.

AND THERE WAS A SECOND FROM THE ACTING CHAIR CURRENTLY, SO CORRECT, TO SEPARATE OUT THE TWO ITEMS. SO BASICALLY WE WOULD BE VOTING ON TWO SEPARATE ITEMS HERE.

ONE ITEM IS THE TRIP TO TAIWAN TO MEET WITH THE UNIVERSITY AS AS A TRUSTEE.

THE SECOND ITEM WOULD BE GOING TO CHINA AND VOTING ON THE CHINA TRIP SEPARATELY.

SO THEY'RE COMPLETELY SEPARATED OUT BETWEEN TAIWAN AND CHINA.

SO I'M SORRY TO INTERRUPT YOU.

SO THE FIRST MOTION WILL BE TO ACTUALLY AMEND THE ITEM.

SO THAT WILL BE THE FIRST VOTE THAT YOU WILL TAKE.

CORRECT. AMENDED AS OKAY.

SO THE FIRST MOTION IS TO AMEND THE ITEM.

THERE'S A FIRST AND A SECOND.

CAN WE TAKE A ROLL CALL VOTE.

STUDENT TRUSTEE SCOTT.

YES. TRUSTEE BURKE IS ABSENT.

TRUSTEE GREEN. ABSTAIN.

TRUSTEE. LEWIS. YES.

TRUSTEE. LIU.

NO. TRUSTEE.

PACHECO. YES.

THE ITEM FAILS.

THE ITEM FAILS. WE'LL HAVE TO BE TAKEN AS A WHOLE.

SO THE ITEM HAS TO BE TAKEN AS A WHOLE.

THAT MEANS THE TRIP WILL INCLUDE BOTH TAIWAN AND CHINA.

SO, CAN WE TAKE A POINT OF CLARIFICATION? WHAT WOULD BE THE FINAL DEADLINE FOR THIS ITEM TO BE VOTED UPON BEFORE TRAVEL? OR IS TODAY THE FINAL? I JUST FEEL LIKE THERE'S MORE INFORMATION THAT NEEDS TO BE PRESENTED.

I PERSONALLY WOULD LIKE TO DO MORE RESEARCH BEFORE I MAKE A VOTE.

SO. TO AGAIN SUDDENLY BRING IT AT AT AT A LATER DATE? ABSOLUTELY. THAT WILL ALSO REQUIRE A VOTE MOTION.

YEAH. A MOTION TO POSTPONE.

A MOTION TO POSTPONE.

OKAY. WOULD YOU MAKE THAT MOTION? TRUSTEE I'VE. AM I ABLE TO NOW? YEAH, I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A MOTION TO POSTPONE.

I'LL SECOND THAT. OKAY.

OKAY. TAKE A ROLL CALL.

VOTE. IT IS.

WE'RE TAKING A ROLL CALL. VOTE TO POSTPONE.

YEAH. AND I GUESS I JUST WANT TO CLARIFY, TO MAKE SURE THAT I FOLLOWED DIRECTION OF WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE.

WE WILL CERTAINLY BRING YOU ANY INFORMATION YOU WILL LIKE.

MY ASSUMPTION.

AND PLEASE DO CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG.

TRUSTEE LOU IS THAT THE ITEM WILL PRESENT IT AS YOU SEE IT TODAY.

NEXT TIME MAYBE WITH A FEW MORE QUESTIONS ANSWERED.

BUT WHAT YOU SEE TODAY WILL BE BASICALLY THE SAME ITEM.

THE ITEM DOES NOT CHANGE.

CORRECT. SO JUST AS SOMEONE EVERYONE'S AWARE, THE ITEM DOES NOT CHANGE.

ALL WE'RE DOING IS EITHER WE'RE POSTPONING IT TO ANOTHER MEETING, OR WE'RE VOTING NOW AND TAKING A ROLL CALL.

VOTE IF IF YOU WILL LIKE US TO BREAK THE ITEM AND CONSIDER TWO DIFFERENT MOTIONS.

ONCE AGAIN TRAVELING TO TO YOU CAN STILL DO THAT.

YOU CAN REVERSE THE CURRENT VOTE BECAUSE WE STILL WENT IN THE SAME MEETING.

SO MOTION FOR RECONSIDERATION.

CORRECT. SO YOU'LL HAVE TO.

YEAH. RECONSIDER THIS.

SEPARATE THE ITEM.

TAKE THE TAIWAN TRIP AT ONCE AND TAKE THE TRIP TO CHINA AS ANOTHER ITEM.

BUT BECAUSE OF TODAY'S ATTENDANCE, WHICH IS FOUR TRUSTEES, IT WILL REQUIRE FOUR VOTES TO PASS.

IT'S NO, THE MAJORITY OF THOSE WHO ARE PRESENT IS THE MAJORITY OF THE VOTERS WILL APPROVE OR NOT AN ITEM.

SO I JUST WANT TO CLARIFY THAT FOR YOU.

OKAY. SO ADDITIONAL POINT OF CLARIFICATION.

[01:40:02]

SO IF WE MOVE FORWARD WITH POSTPONING OR TABLING THIS ITEM, IS THERE THE POSSIBILITY THAT A MOTION CAN BE MADE AT THE NEXT MEETING TO DIVIDE THE TWO AS WELL, OR THE DIVISION DECISION IS ONLY FOR TODAY, NOT FOR THE PRESENTATION AT THE NEXT MEETING, YOU CAN YOU CAN ASK US TO SEPARATE AND PRESENT TWO DIFFERENT ITEMS. NEXT BOARD MEETING, IF YOU LIKE.

BECAUSE TECHNICALLY, IF YOU MOVE IT, IT COULD BE CREATED AS A NEW ITEM.

TODAY, IN ORDER TO DO THAT, YOU WILL NEED A MOTION TO POSTPONEMENT.

HOWEVER, ONE VOTE, EITHER ABSTENTION OR ON THE NEGATIVE, WILL PREVENT THE POSTPONEMENT OF THE ITEM.

IT WILL FAIL THE ITEM WHICH COULD BE REPRESENTED AGAIN AT THE NEXT MEETING.

CORRECT? OKAY.

SO TO THAT END, WHY DON'T WE TAKE THE VOTE, SINCE WE GENERALLY KNOW SINCE THE FOUR IS THE MINIMUM, AND I DON'T BELIEVE WE WILL REACH THAT, WE CAN PRESENT IT AGAIN IN A DIFFERENT MANNER.

NEXT POINT. SO DOES THAT MAKE SENSE? I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THE I I'D LIKE TO DOCTOR I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WE'RE VOTING ON.

SO ARE WE VOTING ON RIGHT NOW ON POSTPONING IT, OR ARE WE VOTING ON SEPARATING IT? SO RIGHT NOW THERE'S A MOTION ON THE TABLE THAT THERE WAS A SECOND THAT I MADE FROM THE POSTPONEMENT.

HOWEVER, CONSIDERING THE SO WE'RE CONSIDERING WE'RE CONSIDERING AT THIS POINT IN TIME, JUST SO IT'S CLARIFIED, WHAT WE'RE VOTING ON IS POSTPONING THIS ITEM TO THE NEXT BOARD MEETING.

CORRECT? CORRECT.

OKAY. YOU CAN TAKE THAT VOTE AND YOU WILL NEED FOUR VOTES ON THE IN FAVOR OF POSTPONING ANY ABSTENTIONS OR AGAINST WILL BASICALLY MEAN YOU CANNOT POSTPONE IT.

SO YOU CAN JUST SIMPLY EITHER NOT TAKE ACTION, WHICH BASICALLY WILL POSTPONE IT IN A DIFFERENT MANNER, OR YOU CAN REVISIT YOUR ABILITY OF SEPARATING THE ITEM AND VOTING ON DIFFERENT TRIPS.

BUT AGAIN, YOU WILL NEED FOUR VOTES.

FOUR VOTES? YES, MA'AM. YES, I HAVE A QUESTION.

SO THIS WOULD JUST BE REGARDING HER TRAVEL, NOT THE PARTNERSHIPS THAT WE ALREADY HAVE WITH THE COLLEGES.

CORRECT. SO CURRENTLY WE DO HAVE A STANDING PARTNERSHIPS WITH ALL THE UNIVERSITIES IN TAIWAN.

AND THAT IS A ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CAMP AND ONE SHORE UNIVERSITY.

HOPEFULLY I DIDN'T PRONOUNCE THAT INCORRECTLY.

THE DOCTOR LIU WAS GOING TO TO VISIT AND POTENTIALLY ESTABLISH A PARTNERSHIP.

AND SO SO IF WE SEPARATE THE ITEMS THEN THE APPROVAL WILL BE TO TRAVEL ONLY TO TAIWAN.

AND THEN THE ITEM OF TRAVELING TO ONE SHOW UNIVERSITY WILL BE CONSIDERED AS A SEPARATE ITEM.

AND SO IT WOULD BE TWO SEPARATE VOTES.

ONE IS TO TRAVEL TO TAIWAN, AND THE OTHER ONE WOULD BE TO TRAVEL TO CHINA.

SO IT'S COMPLETELY SEPARATED OUT.

YES. SO I GET THAT.

I'M JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE CAN CLARIFY HOW HER TRAVELING OR NOT TRAVELING WOULD AFFECT OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CHINA.

LIKE POLITICALLY.

LIKE HOW WOULD THAT CURRENTLY WE DON'T WE DON'T HAVE ANY AGREEMENTS OR ANYTHING WITH CHINA.

THEIR ONLY AGREEMENTS ARE IN TAIWAN WITH THE UNIVERSITIES IN TAIWAN.

GOTCHA. SO SHE GOES WHERE WE CURRENTLY DO HAVE SAYING WE WANT TO HAVE AN AGREEMENT WITH CHINA.

OKAY. GOT YOU. OKAY, SO I DO APOLOGIZE IF I WERE TO RETRACT MY MOTION AND AND THEN WE DO SPLIT UP. WE WE CAN POTENTIALLY VOTE FOR TAIWAN, BUT WE CAN WE THEN TABLE THE CHINA FOR NEXT WEEK.

THE OR NEXT MEETING.

YOU MAKE A VERY GOOD POINT.

TRUSTEE. GREEN.

THE CLEANEST WAY TO DO IT IS TO AMEND THE CURRENT ITEM AND REMOVE THE PORTION OF THE TRIP THAT GOES TO CHINA AND MEMBERS ZURICH FURTHER THE ITEM AS AMENDED, AND THEN INTRODUCE A BRAND NEW ITEM FOR THE TRIP FOR THE NEXT MEETING.

OKAY. SO SO SO WHAT THE WHAT THE NEXT WHAT YOU WANT PLAN TO DO? I NEED TO KNOW.

SO LET ME SEE IF I GET ALL THIS CORRECT.

SO WE HAVE A MOTION.

WE HAD A MOTION ON THE TABLE TO POSTPONE.

THE ITEM WAS SECOND BY TRUSTEE LEWIS.

THEN THE MOTION HAS BEEN RETRACTED.

[01:45:03]

SO NOW WE'RE BACK TO THE ITEM AS PRESENTED.

IT IS EARLY.

DO A MOTION TO RECONSIDER.

WELL, WE CAN DO A MOTION TO AMEND BECAUSE WE'RE NOT RECONSIDERING.

CORRECT. RIGHT NOW, YOU CAN MAKE A MOTION TO AMEND THE ITEM TO CONSIDER THE ITEM WITHOUT THE ONE SHOW UNIVERSITY PORTION OF THE TRIP, WHICH YOU WILL LEAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO INTRODUCE A NEW ITEM IN A SUBSEQUENT MEETING ADDRESSING THE TRAVEL PORTION TO ONE SHOW UNIVERSITY.

IF THAT IS SOMETHING THE THE BOARD WILL LIKE TO DO.

I THINK THAT WOULD GIVE US MORE TIME TO GET MORE BACKGROUND INFORMATION SO THAT WE CAN MAKE A WELL INFORMED DECISION.

AND I THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION THAT YOU PRESENTED.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW A LITTLE BIT.

OKAY. SO WE'RE BACK TO SO WE NEED SOMEBODY NEEDS TO MAKE A MOTION TO AMEND.

CAN YOU PLEASE I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE THE MOTION THE MOTION TO AMEND OKAY.

SEPARATING THE TWO.

OKAY. IT'S EXCISE EXCISING THE PORTION OF IT.

RIGHT. SO YOU WANT A SECOND? OKAY. I'LL SEND IT.

GO AHEAD. GO AHEAD.

I WOULD MAKE A MOTION TO AMEND THE ITEM.

3.26 EXCISING THE VISITS TO CHINA, SPECIFICALLY TO HUAZHONG UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, AND TO WATCH ALL UNIVERSITY AS A WHOLE AND TO ONLY HAVE TAIWAN PARTNERSHIPS IN THE SIDE.

OKAY, SO NOW LET'S TAKE A ROLL CALL.

VOTE ON THE AMENDMENT TO AMEND STUDENT TRUSTEE SCOTT.

YES. TRUSTEE GREEN.

YES. TRUSTEE. LEWIS.

AYE. TRUSTEE LIU.

60. TRUSTEE.

PACHECO. YES.

AND IT DIDN'T PASS. MOTION FAILS.

THE ITEM DOES NOT.

OKAY, SO IT DIDN'T PASS.

SO THAT MEANS THAT BASICALLY WE CAN'T COME TO AN AGREEMENT OF SEPARATING OUT THIS TRIP.

SO WE WILL TAKE A ROLL CALL VOTE AS THE ITEM STANDS RIGHT NOW.

SO CAN WE TAKE A ROLL CALL VOTE.

STUDENT TRUSTEE SCOTT.

NAY. TRUSTEE.

GREENE. A.

MOMENT FOR CONSIDERATION.

I'M SORRY. CAN YOU PASS IT TO THE NEXT.

TRUSTEE LEWIS. NO.

TRUSTEE. LOU. YES.

TRUSTEE. PACHECO.

NO. TRUSTEE.

GREEN.

YES. MOTION FAILS.

MOTION. AGAIN.

WE DID NOT. IN ORDER FOR THIS ITEM TO PASS, IT HAD TO BE UNANIMOUS.

BECAUSE IT WAS NOT UNANIMOUS.

THE MOTION HAS FAILED.

OKAY. SO NOW WE'RE GOING TO MOVE ON TO INFORMATIONAL.

YES. NO.

OKAY. I'LL, I'M GONNA I'M GONNA ASK I'M GOING TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL CONTEXT TO SEE IF YOU WANT TO REFRAME THIS.

WHEN, WHEN AN ITEM FAILS, IT FAILS.

YOU CANNOT BRING IT BACK NEXT MEETING.

MEANING THERE IS NOT TRIP TO EITHER TAIWAN OR CHINA.

PERIOD. SO IF THAT IS, IF THAT IS WHAT THE BOARD LIKES THE OUTCOME OF THIS TO BE YOUR VOTE SHOULD BE WHAT YOU DECIDE WHAT WHAT IT WAS DECIDED.

IF THAT WAS NOT YOUR INTENTION, YOU CAN RECONSIDER YOUR PREVIOUS VOTE, TAKE A VOTE AND RECONSIDER THE ITEM.

BUT ONCE WE'RE DONE, YOU'RE DONE.

MEANING THE ITEM, THE TOTALITY OF THE ITEM FAILED.

YOU CANNOT TRAVEL AND CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG.

THE ONLY PERSON WHO COULD PRESENT A MOTION FOR RECONSIDERATION IS ONE WHO DID NOT VOTE IN THE AFFIRMATIVE, OR SOMEONE WHO DID NOT VOTE IN THE IN THE IN THE AFFIRMATIVE.

CORRECT. AFFIRMATIVE. SO AGAIN, DOES ANY ONE PARTICULAR EVENT LEADS IN NO TRIP TO TAIWAN OR CHINA, RIGHT THIS YEAR? CAN I MOTION FOR BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE.

SO CAN I MOTION FOR DELAY THIS FOR TO NEXT MEETING WE ALREADY.

WE ALREADY ALREADY VOTED NO.

WE ALREADY VOTED NO.

THAT'S WHY WE WANTED TO SEPARATE IT.

BUT THAT FAILED.

AND BECAUSE THAT FAILED, WE HAD TO TAKE A VOTE ON THE WHOLE VERSUS THE SEPARATE.

[01:50:05]

AND BECAUSE THAT FAILED, THEN THAT BASICALLY MEANS NO TRIP AND IT CAN'T BE BROUGHT BACK.

ALL RIGHT, I WILL CHANGE MY VOTE.

SO NOW WHAT? SO YOU CAN'T TAKE A MOTION TO REOPEN FOR RECONSIDERATION OF YOUR PRIOR ACTION? OKAY. SO WHAT IS YOUR MOTION? SEPARATE IT OUT.

SO SO YOU FIRST HAVE TO AGREE TO YOU HAVE TO AND YOU HAVE VOTED IN THE AFFIRMATIVE.

RIGHT? RIGHT.

AND IT HAS TO BE AN A MOTION TO RECONSIDER HAS TO COME FROM SOMEONE WHO DID NOT VOTE.

CORRECT. AFFIRMATIVE. CORRECT.

SO IT HAS TO BE ONE OF US.

YES. THREE.

I, I WOULD LIKE TO CONSIDER AGAIN FOR EVERYONE TO REALLY THINK ABOUT THIS, TO SEPARATE OUT THIS TRIP.

SO IT'S VERY CLEAR WHAT WE'RE VOTING ON.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEPARATE OUT THE TRIP TO TAIWAN, WHERE WE DO HAVE AGREEMENTS AS PROFESSIONAL AGREEMENTS AS A TRIP THAT WE CAN VOTE ON, AND A SECOND ONE, WHICH WOULD MEAN THE CHINA TRIP, WHICH IS THE SECOND ONE.

THAT IS A SEPARATE ITEM BECAUSE WE AMEND THIS ONE ITEM AFTER THIS MOTION FOR RECONSIDERATION, THEN THAT AMENDMENT TAKING OUT THE HUAZHONG DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT CANNOT BE BROUGHT BACK BECAUSE IT WAS NOT VOTED AGAINST.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? I DON'T KNOW, I, I WILL HAVE TO DOUBLE CHECK THIS, BUT I THINK RIGHT NOW YOU'RE BASICALLY CONSIDERING ONLY GOING TO TAIWAN.

YEAH. WELL, BUT WE HAVE TO.

WE REVIVED THE ITEM THAT WE JUST VOTED DOWN.

AND IN ITS ORIGINAL FORM WITH BOTH TAIWAN AND CHINA.

CORRECT. WE REVIVED THAT.

BUT YOU ALSO AND THEN WE MOTION TO AMEND IT.

YOU ALSO FAIL A MOTION OF SEPARATING THE TWO ITEMS AND BRINGING THE CHINA TRIP SEPARATELY, RIGHT? SO TECHNICALLY, I THINK YOU COULD TECHNICALLY AMEND THIS ITEM AND THAT'S IT.

OKAY. SO CAN WE AMEND IT AND VOTE ON THE TRIP TO TAIWAN AND THEN HAVE THE A SEPARATE ITEM? WE CAN THE SEPARATE ITEM TO CHINA.

WE CAN THEN VOTE TO POSTPONE IT.

AND THAT WAY WE'RE SEPARATING OUT THE TWO ITEMS. CORRECT. SO ONE WE'RE VOTING.

YOU KNOW WHETHER SHE SHE CAN CAN GO TO CONTINUE OUR AGREEMENTS.

IN TAIWAN.

AND ON THE SECOND ONE, WE CAN BASICALLY SOMEONE CAN MOTION TO POSTPONE IT AND THEN WE CAN BRING IT BACK TO THE NEXT MEETING. YES.

OKAY. SO I THINK I JUST WANT I THINK, I THINK, I THINK I DON'T KNOW, I THINK THE FIRST THING WE NEED TO DO IS RECONSIDER OR PRIOR VOTE AND LEAVE THE ITEM AS PRESENTED.

RIGHT. AND SO WE'RE RECONSIDERING THE PRIOR VOTE, MEANING TWO VOTES, THE ORIGINAL OR NOT THE ORIGINAL MEAN THAT WE'RE VOTING IN FAVOR OF.

YEAH. SO VOTING TO REVIVE IT, ESSENTIALLY JUST STARTING WITH THE ITEM AS PRESENTED.

AGAIN, IF YOU APPROVE TO GO BACK.

RIGHT, OKAY. I APPROVE FOR US TO GO BACK.

I MEAN, DO WE HAVE TO DO ROLL CALL ON THAT MOTION TO TO RECONSIDER THE PREVIOUS VOTE BY BY.

AND I PUT IT ON THE FLOOR TO RECONSIDER IT.

OKAY. SECOND, SECOND.

OKAY. SO WE WE NEED TO VOTE AGAIN.

AND THE SPECIFIC LANGUAGE FOR THIS VOTE TO BRING IT BACK THE WAY IT IS.

OKAY. IF YOU WANT TO RECONSIDER, ALL OF YOU HAVE TO AGREE.

AND ALL OF US HAVE TO AGREE TO WRITE.

ONE PERSON DID DISAGREE.

IT DOESN'T WORK. THEN IT FAILS.

OKAY, OKAY. READY? STUDENT TRUSTEE SCOTT.

YES. TRUSTEE GREEN.

YES. TRUSTEE. LEWIS.

YES. TRUSTEE LIU.

HI. TRUSTEE. PACHECO I.

OKAY. IT'S BEEN RECONSIDERED AND BROUGHT BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL FORM.

ALL RIGHT. OKAY. OKAY, NOW WE CAN GO.

TRUSTEE LIU SHOULD INTRODUCE A MOTION TO AMEND THE ITEM AS PRESENTED.

REMOVING THE PORTION OF THE ITEM THEY INCLUDE CHINA.

SO FOR FOR THIS MEETING.

RIGHT. RIGHT. FOR NOW.

YEAH. OKAY.

ARE WE DIVIDING THE ITEM OR ARE WE AMENDING.

BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO AMEND IT BEFORE WE CAN DO ANYTHING ELSE.

YOU HAVE TO AMEND IT. WE HAVE TO.

YOU CANNOT CREATE THE CHINA THE THE CHINA TRIP IN THIS MEETING.

[01:55:02]

OKAY, SO THE CHINA MAYBE WE CAN DO NEXT I WILL CHECK THE THE WE VOTE ON A MOTION TO DIVIDE.

OR DO WE VOTE ON. THAT'S THE MOTION THAT TO AMEND, WE'RE AMENDING AND TAKING OUT THE.

CHINA ALREADY VOTED ON A MOTION TO AMEND.

RIGHT? RIGHT. CORRECT.

SO NOW ALL NOW THAT THE ITEMS BACK, ALL WE CAN DO IS JUST AMEND IT AND TAKE OUT CHINA.

THAT'S IT. SO WE'RE STARTING FROM SQUARE ONE, I GUESS, WHERE WE HAVE THIS ITEM ON THE NEW ONE.

BECAUSE AS TO MY RECOLLECTION, WE HAD A MOTION TO AMEND ALREADY.

CORRECT. AND THAT MOTION DID NOT PASS.

YOU'RE CORRECT. I'M SORRY.

AND THE REASON I'M ASKING DOCTOR LEWIS, BECAUSE YOU YOU YOU VOTED NO OR ABSTAINED ON THE INITIAL DIVISION, SO YOU HAVE TO RECONSIDER THAT.

SHE WAS THE ONE THAT BECAUSE YOU ABSTAIN.

ALL RIGHT. SO I MOTION WE WE WILL RECONSIDER THE, THE SEPARATION, THE MOTION OF SEPARATING THE ITEM, THE ITEM.

OKAY. AND NOW WE NEED A SECOND.

SECOND. OKAY.

ROLL CALL. VOTE. STUDENT TRUSTEE.

SCOTT. YES.

TRUSTEE. GREEN. YES.

TRUSTEE. LEWIS. YES.

TRUSTEE. LIU. A TRUSTEE.

PACHECO. YES.

MOTION PASSES. OKAY, SO NOW WE'RE ANYONE CAN VOTE ON THE ITEM AS PRESENTED FOR THE CHINESE, FOR THE TAIWAN, FOR THE TAIWAN TRIP. YOU CAN DO TWO THINGS.

ONE, TAKE IT AS IT IS, DON'T DO ANYTHING YET OR DIVIDE THE CHINA PORTION OF THE TRIP AND THE TAIWAN TRIP AND TAKE THE ITEM AS AMENDED.

OKAY, SO NOW WHAT ARE WE DOING? I KNOW, YEAH, BECAUSE SHE SHE TOLD ME TO RECONSIDER THE AMENDMENT.

AND SO THE ITEM IS BACK TO BEING NEW, FRESH, RECONSIDER THE AMENDMENT.

CORRECT. AND THE SAME THE SAME AMENDMENT THAT WAS ALREADY VOTED ON PRIOR, NOT A DIFFERENT ONE.

CORRECT IS PERFECTLY FINE FOR THE CURRENT USE.

SO I JUST WANT TO BE CLEAR.

WHAT AM I VOTING ON NOW? YOU CAN YOU CAN DO ONE OF TWO THINGS ONE.

TAKE THE ITEM AS PRESENTED AND DO NOTHING OR TWO, WHICH IS WHY WE GOT TO THIS POINT.

MAKE A MOTION TO AMEND THE ITEM.

REMOVING THE PORTION THAT GOES TO ONE SHOW UNIVERSITY.

IN OTHER WORDS, ONLY APPROVING THE TRIP TO TAIWAN.

OKAY. DO YOU WANT YOU WANT TO GO AHEAD AND MAKE THE MOTION TO AMEND THIS, EXCISING THE VISITS TO GUANGZHOU UNIVERSITY UNIVERSITY IN CHINA ALTOGETHER.

OKAY. AND LEAVE ONLY TAIWAN.

SECOND. ROLL CALL.

VOTE. STUDENT TRUSTEE.

SCOTT. YES.

TRUSTEE. GREEN. YES.

TRUSTEE LEWIS A TRUSTEE.

LIU. I TRUSTEE PACHECO I MOTION PASSES.

OKAY, SO NOW WE SEPARATED IT, SO.

NO NO, NO.

SO I WILL LOOK AT THE RULES AND I'LL GET BACK.

SO WE WE WE MAKE WE VOTED ON AMENDING IT.

NOW DO WE HAVE TO VOTE AGAIN? DO WE HAVE THE ITEM AS AMENDED? ITEM CORRECT.

OKAY. SO NOW WE'RE GOING TO VOTE.

SINCE WE AMENDED THE ITEM WE'RE GOING TO VOTE ON THE TRIP TO TAIWAN ONLY.

RIGHT. SO CAN WE TAKE A ROLL CALL VOTE.

WAIT. WE HAVE TO HAVE A MOTION OH OH TO PASS THE ITEM.

OKAY. CAN I HAVE A MOTION, PLEASE? I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A VOTE.

MAKE A MOTION TO GO INTO VOTING, AS AMENDED.

AS AMENDED. AMENDMENT.

SECOND. OKAY, NOW, CAN WE TAKE A ROLL CALL? VOTE. STUDENT TRUSTEE.

SCOTT. YES.

TRUSTEE. GREEN. YES.

TRUSTEE LEWIS A TRUSTEE.

LIU. I TRUSTEE PACHECO.

AYE. MOTION PASSES.

OKAY. NOW WE GO TO CONSENT.

NO, WE GO TO INFORMATIONAL ITEMS. WE ALREADY PASSED CONSENT.

YES. WE'RE DONE WITH THE CONSENT.

YES, WE MADE IT.

OKAY, WE'RE DONE WITH CONSENT.

NOW WE'RE IN INFORMATIONAL ITEM FOR 4.01.

[4.01 College Coordinating Committee Minutes: February 12, 2024 and February 26, 2024,]

COLLEGE COORDINATING COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES FEBRUARY 12TH, 2024 AND FEBRUARY 26TH, 2024.

RECEIVE AND FILE.

RIGHT? WRITE CORRECT ITEM 402 REVIEW OF BOARD POLICY BP 4300.

[4.02 Review of Board Policy: BP 4300]

RECEIVE AND FILE ITEM NUMBER 4.03.

[4.03 First Reading Revised Board Policy 4106 titled Nursing Programs]

FIRST READING REVISED BOARD POLICY 4106 TITLED NURSING PROGRAMS RECEIVE, RECEIVED AND FILED.

NOW WE GO TO ADMINISTRATIVE ITEMS.

[5.01 REVISED: Candidates for CCCT Board of Directors – 2024]

OKAY. AND LET'S SEE WHAT ADMINISTRATIVE ITEMS.

[02:00:02]

WE FINISHED CONSENT.

ADMINISTRATIVE ITEMS IS CANDIDATES FOR THE CITY BOARD OF DIRECTORS.

SO EVERY TIME WHEN THERE IS AN ELECTION THE BOARD TAKE ACTION ON RECOMMENDING SEVEN SEVEN CANDIDATES FOR SEVEN VACANCIES.

THE LIST IS PRESENTED AND THERE IS THE LIST IS PRESENTED, AND THE CANDIDATES THAT ARE THE INCUMBENTS HAVE THE ASTERISK.

I THINK MANY OF YOU KNOW YOUR COLLEAGUES THAT ARE THE INCUMBENTS.

BUT OBVIOUSLY WE WILL MAKE A SUBMISSION BASED ON YOUR RECOMMENDATION.

OKAY. SO THE LIST WAS PRESENTED AS PART OF THE FOR VOTING WILL TAKE PLACE VIA BALLOT, SO SELECT NO MORE THAN SEVEN CANDIDATES.

RIGHT? AND THE ONES THAT HAVE THE ASTERISK ARE SEVEN CANDIDATES.

ARE THEY INCUMBENTS? ARE THEY INCUMBENTS? IS THERE ANYONE THAT WOULD LIKE TO GO AHEAD AND PROPOSE THAT WE SUPPORT THE INCUMBENTS THAT HAVE THE ASTERISKS? YEAH. OR WOULD YOU LIKE? YEAH. EXACTLY.

SEVEN. SO THE INCUMBENT.

SEVEN. RIGHT.

YOU I MEAN, YOU COULD RECOMMEND ANYONE HERE AT ANY VARIATION OF THIS LIST, OR YOU CAN RECOMMEND INCUMBENTS.

SO WHICH IS THERE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FROM ANYONE, WHETHER YOU WANT TO GO AHEAD AND MOVE FORWARD WITH THE CURRENT INCUMBENTS? OR WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE CHANGES USUALLY.

MARISA DOES THIS KIND OF THING.

SO MAYBE SINCE SHE'S NOT HERE, I GUESS OH.

HISTORICALLY, THE TWO, THE TWO PEOPLE THAT I WOULD WANT TO NOMINATE OR ARE ALREADY INCUMBENTS, SO OR, YOU KNOW, THE ONES THAT I WOULD VOTE FOR, THEY'RE PART OF THAT.

WHEN IS THE DEADLINE FOR THIS ITEM, WENDY? SO WE STILL HAVE TIME FOR THE NEXT BOARD MEETING.

IF YOU WANTED TO WAIT TO.

FOR TRUSTEE.

PEREZ TO PARTICIPATE.

OR YOU CAN, I THINK, VOTE NOW.

I THINK SINCE SHE'S ACTUALLY MET PROBABLY A VAST MAJORITY OF THESE FOLKS, I WOULD, DEFINITELY WANT TO HAVE HER INPUT ON THIS. OR THERE'S AN INCUMBENT THAT WE SHOULDN'T BE VOTING FOR.

THEN SHE WOULD BE THE ONE THAT WOULD BE ABLE TO TELL US IF THERE'S A PARTICULAR INCUMBENT KIND OF GUIDE US.

YEAH. SO CAN WE POSTPONE THIS ITEM TO THE NEXT MEETING OR.

YES, YES, WE WILL HAVE A FEW DAYS.

OKAY. SO A MOTION TO POSTPONE THIS ITEM TO THE NEXT BOARD MEETING.

SECOND. DO WE NEED TO DO A ROLL CALL? ROLL CALL. VOTE. STUDENT TRUSTEE.

SCOTT. I TRUSTEE GREEN.

I TRUSTEE LEWIS I TRUSTEE LOO I TRUSTEE PACHECO.

I MOTION PASSES.

OKAY. REPORTS AND COMMENTS FROM DISTRICT OFFICIALS.

[6.01 Reports and Comments from District Officials]

WE'LL GO AHEAD AND GET STARTED WITH OUR STUDENT TRUSTEE OR I'LL KEEP THIS SHORT.

TODAY AT SENATE, I WAS VERY HAPPY TO SEE DOCTOR FIERRO COME AND GIVE THE SENATE A RECAP OF MULTIPLE BOARD MEETINGS THAT WE'VE HAD AND HEAR IT FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH, I GUESS, BECAUSE THEY HAVE A LOT OF QUESTIONS.

AND I THINK YOU DID A VERY GOOD JOB OF ANSWERING THEM, EVEN THOUGH THEY DIDN'T ASK AS MUCH, BUT I THINK IT WAS BECAUSE YOU ANSWERED THEM.

AND SO I REALLY LOVE TO SEE THAT.

AND ELECTIONS FOR OCC ARE HAPPENING VERY SOON.

SO YOU'LL SEE A NEW PRESIDENT, NEW VICE PRESIDENT, AND A NEW STUDENT TRUSTEE.

SO THIS SEAT WILL BE SITTING IN BY SOMEBODY ELSE.

BUT I'M. I'M VERY HAPPY WITH THE PEOPLE THAT ARE GOING TO BE RUNNING.

I THINK GUYS WILL HAVE A SOMEONE THAT'S VERY CAPABLE SITTING IN MY CHAIR, ALTHOUGH I JUST STARTED TO GET USED TO THE ROLE, BUT IT WAS AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY.
