[1.03 Agenda Organization]
TO ORGANIZE OUR CHANGE THE ORDER OF AGENDA.SEEING NONE WE USE THE AGENDA ON THE BOARDWALK.
[1.04 Comments from the Audience]
AND NEXT WE'RE GOING TO GO TO COMMENTS FROM THE AUDIENCE.WE HAVE ONE ONLINE AUDIENCE, SO ANDREA, CAN YOU PLEASE READ THE COMMENTS? YES, THANK YOU. WE HAVE ONE PUBLIC COMMENT FROM AMY PARKER.
TOPIC OF REMARKS ARE AS FOLLOWS I WOULD LIKE THE BOARD TO KNOW HOW INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY OVERSEEN BY BUSINESS SERVICES OFFICIALLY HANDLES STUDENT SEARCH DATA BY VP LOPEZ'S OWN ADMISSION IN A MEETING I HAD WITH HIM AND PRESIDENT FIERRO, IT SENDS OFF ALL OF STUDENTS LOG DATA.
OFF TO SOME SHADOWY OUTSIDE SECURITY PROVIDER.
ONE WOULD THINK IT WOULD BE FORTINET, BUT AFTER A CSPA REQUEST TO THEM, I FOUND OUT THAT IT ISN'T.
WE HAVE COMMENTS FROM VICTORIA RUIZ IS REGARDING CURRENT EVENTS WITH WOMEN'S SOCCER PROGRAM.
THANK YOU. GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE.
I'M THE GOALKEEPER FOR THE CERRITOS WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM.
MY TIME HERE HAS BEEN THE BEST COLLEGE EXPERIENCE I'VE EVER HAD.
I'M A TRANSFER FROM LIFE PACIFIC UNIVERSITY.
I WAS ONE OF THOSE PLAYERS I SAW PLAYING SOCCER FOR A YEAR BECAUSE OF THE EXPERIENCE I HAD.
HOWEVER, I REALIZED I COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT SOCCER.
SHE DIDN'T HAVE TO ACCEPT ME ONTO THE TEAM.
I WAS OVERWEIGHT AND DIDN'T HAVE THE EXPERIENCE LIKE THE OTHER WOMEN HAD.
SHE GAVE ME A CHANCE WHEN NO OTHER COACH WOULD.
SHE BELIEVED IN ME WHEN AT TIMES I COULDN'T EVEN BELIEVE IN MYSELF.
I AM PROUD TO BE WHERE I AM TODAY AS A PLAYER, AN INDIVIDUAL AND A YOUNG WOMAN, TO SAY THE LEAST.
I WOULD NOT HAVE THE RECOGNITION AND AWARDS I HAVE TODAY IF NOT FOR COACH TESSA.
[00:05:06]
IT WAS PLANNED A SCHEME TO HAVE HIS BROTHER GO UP AGAINST COACHES WHO WERE WEAK CANDIDATES.IT WAS THOUGHT THAT HIS BROTHER WOULD GET THE HEAD POSITION ROLE FOR THE WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM.
HOWEVER, THAT SCHEME BACKFIRED.
THEY DID NOT THINK ABOUT THE PREVIOUS SEXUAL ALLEGATIONS THAT HAD FINALLY OVERPASSED.
TESLA SHOULD HAVE HAD THE PROFESSIONAL COURTESY TO SPEAK WITH THE PRESIDENT.
TESLA HAS NOT ONLY IMPACTED MY LIFE, BUT ALL THE YOUNG WOMEN ON THE TEAM.
JUST AS WE'VE GONE INTO A GOOD RHYTHM AND ARE FINALLY MAKING TREMENDOUS PROGRESS IN ONLY TWO YEARS, IT IS ONLY FAIR TO LET THE WOMEN WHO HAVE BEEN HERE SINCE THE BEGINNING AND THE WOMEN WHO ARE PROMISED TO HAVE COACH TESSA AND COACH LUIS FINISH THEIR YEARS WITH THEM.
WE, THE CERRITOS WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM, DESERVE THE RIGHT TO HAVE OUR VOICES BE HEARD.
AS PLAYERS, WE SHOULD BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION OF HOW THESE ACTIONS AFFECT US.
THE OTHER TEAMS THAT ARE GETTING NEW HEAD COACHES AREN'T AFFECTED LIKE WE ARE.
THEY HAVE A WHOLE SEASON TO GET A NEW COACH.
WHILE WE WOULD BE LEFT WITH ABOUT TWO MONTHS.
WE ASKED TO POSTPONE THE NEW HEAD COACH SIGNING TO THE END OF OUR FALL SEASON OR TO EVEN HAVE THE NEW COACH AS A PART OF OUR COACHING STAFF AS AN ASSISTANT SO SHE CAN UNDERSTAND OUR TEAM AND THE YOUNG LADIES.
THAT WOULD STILL HAVE ANOTHER SEASON AFTERWARDS.
THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO LISTEN TO OUR CONCERNS.
WE HAVE A SECOND PUBLIC COMMENT.
MEGAN. MEGAN LEGARDA IS REGARDING THE SAME TOPIC CURRENT EVENT WITH WOMEN'S SOCCER PROGRAM.
I EXPERIENCED WHAT IT FELT LIKE TO BE EXCITED AND WAITING IN ANTICIPATION FOR THE SEASON TO START AND THEN HAVING THOSE PLANS LED AWRY BECAUSE OF CIRCUMSTANCES OUT OF MY CONTROL. I STRUGGLED WITH MY LOVE FOR THE SPORT AND PONDERED IF I WANTED TO CONTINUE PLAYING AT ALL.
I HAD KNOWN TESSA SINCE I WAS EIGHT YEARS OLD AND I KNEW HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND AND EXPERIENCES.
EXPERIENCE SHE HAD UNDER HER BELT WOULD BE A HUGE ASSET FOR THE PROGRAM.
I KNEW SHE WAS BIG ON UNDERSTANDING THAT SOCCER WAS BIGGER THAN WHAT HAPPENED ON THE FIELD MEETING.
OUR ASSISTANT COACH LUIS ONLY HELPED SOLIDIFY MY DECISION EVEN MORE TO CONTINUE PLAYING.
OVER THE COURSE OF THE FIRST YEAR, IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT THE CIRCUMSTANCES WERE NOT IN OUR FAVOR AS MANY GIRLS HAD TRANSFERRED TO OTHER SCHOOLS BECAUSE OF THE SITUATION AT HAND AND TIME TO GET ALL OTHER AFFAIRS IN ORDER WAS LIMITED BECAUSE THEY WERE ONLY HIRED IN JUNE.
GOING INTO THE SECOND YEAR, IT WAS PREVALENT WITH THE EXTRA TIME PROVIDED.
PROVIDED THE COACHING STAFF FOR US, I FELT MY LOVE GROW FOR THE SPORT ALONG WITH MY CONFIDENCE OVER THE COURSE OF THE TWO YEARS I HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THIS PROGRAM UNDER LUIS AND TESSA, I HAVE FELT MY CONFIDENCE IN MYSELF AND IN OTHERS INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY.
UPON HEARING THE NEWS OF THEIR REPLACEMENT, I WAS EXTREMELY CONFUSED BECAUSE THE PROGRAM SEEMED TO BE HEADING IN A POSITIVE DIRECTION AND ANY CHANGES MADE ESPECIALLY THIS CLOSE TO THE PRESEASON, WOULD BE HINDERING THAT.
THEY USED WORDS LIKE LONG TERM AND FUTURE WHEN DISCUSSING WHY ALL OF THIS WAS HAPPENING, WHICH MADE THEM FEEL AS THOUGH THEY WERE MAKING THE DECISION ONLY WITH THE FUTURE IN MIND RATHER THAN THE WITH THE GIRLS IN MIND IN THE PROGRAM NOW WHO HAVE GIVEN EVERYTHING TO THIS PROGRAM FOR THE LAST YEAR OR TWO, IT FELT AS THOUGH THOSE FEELINGS AND THE IT FELT AS THOUGH THE FEELINGS AND THE FUTURES OF THOSE WHO WOULD BE IN THE PROGRAM FOR THE NEXT SEASON OR EVEN THE NEXT FOR THE SEASON AFTER THAT
[00:10:09]
WERE NOT TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT.THE PLAYERS NOW ARE JUST AS DESERVING OF A BRIGHT FUTURE IN SOCCER AS THE NEXT PLAYERS TO COME.
SHOWS WHAT TYPE OF PEOPLE AND COACHES LUIS AND TESSA ARE.
EVEN THOUGH THEIR FUTURES IN THE PROGRAM ARE UNCERTAIN, IT SHOWS THAT THEY ARE STILL THERE TO ADVOCATE AND HELP US IMPROVE AS PEOPLE AND PLAYERS OFF THE FIELD.
WE STILL HAVE ONE PUBLIC COMMENT FROM GENTLEMAN LEE SQUIRE.
LEIGH WALKER. VIETNAM VETERANS DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR CERRITOS COLLEGE CLASS OF 1972.
PRESIDENT AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
WE THE PEOPLE AND VETERANS OF THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT.
REMEMBER VETERANS MILITARY RESERVES IN THE NATIONAL GUARD SERVE IN POLICING ACROSS AMERICA.
TO US VETERANS, THESE ARE OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS.
THE PURPLE HEART MEDAL IS GIVEN TO THOSE WHO ARE KILLED OR WOUNDED IN ACTION.
POLICE WEEK ALSO ALSO HONORS THE FALLEN OFFICERS.
THE RED ROSE IN THE PICTURE IN HONOR OF NATIONAL POLICE WEEK.
I ALSO WANT TO PRESENT THE THIN BLUE LINE FLAG TO THE CERRITOS COLLEGE POLICE CHIEF.
GOD BLESS THE MILITARY AND ITS VETERANS.
GOD BLESS LOCAL POLICING AND THEIR FAMILIES ACROSS AMERICA.
[1.05 Reports and Comments from Constituent Groups]
WE ARE GOING TO MOVE ON TO 1.05 REPORTS AND COMMENTS FROM CONSTITUENTS GROUP.WE START WITH DENNIS FALCON, FACULTY SENATE PRESIDENT.
COLLEAGUES. FRIENDS AND MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC.
WELL, THE FACULTY SENATE HAD ITS LAST MEETING OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR THIS PAST TUESDAY, AND IT WAS A VERY INTERESTING, VERY SUCCESSFUL, VERY POSITIVE OPPORTUNITY TO SAY GOODBYE TO THIS ACADEMIC YEAR.
WE HAD ONE OF OUR FACULTY PEOPLE WHO HAD BEEN ON THE FACULTY SENATE FOR ALMOST 50 YEARS, IT SEEMS. ANGELA HOPPY NAGEL, WHO ATTENDED HER LAST MEETING AS A FACULTY SENATOR, AT LEAST FOR SOME TIME.
THAT WAS BITTERSWEET, BUT WE ALL THANKED HER FOR ALL THE HARD WORK THAT SHE'S DONE.
ASIDE FROM THAT, WE ALSO ARE CELEBRATING AND YOU WILL BE REVIEWING, I GUESS, TONIGHT A TRIP THAT ONE OF OUR FACULTY MEMBERS, OUR COLLEAGUES, WILL BE TAKING TO AMSTERDAM LATER ON THIS YEAR.
AND HE WAS INVITED TO GO AND REPORT AND DO A PRESENTATION ON THE PHILOSOPHY OF CONSPIRACY THEORIES.
[00:15:03]
AND I WISH WILLIAM MITTENDORF, WHO, SINCE HE'S BEEN HERE FULL TIME PROFESSOR OF PHILOSOPHY, HAS REALLY MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF IN A PLACE HERE AT CERRITOS. AND HE IS REALLY WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? HE HAS EXCELLED IN THAT POSITION AND HE IS DOING ABSOLUTELY GREAT.AND SO I'M HAPPY THAT WE COULD SUPPORT HIM.
THE FACULTY SENATE IS ACTUALLY USING OUR OWN DISCRETIONARY BUDGET TO SUPPORT HIS TRIP.
ALSO, BY THE POWER VESTED IN ME AS FACULTY SENATE PRESIDENT, I AM GOING TO DECLARE THAT THE RECITAL ROOM OVER IN THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER IS GOING TO BE RENAMED AFTER DR.
PIERRO WAS LOOKING AT ME LIKE, WAIT, WAIT A MINUTE.
I'M IN MY ROOM. I'M IN MY ROOM.
CONGRATULATE YOU, MY FRIEND, ON YOUR RETIREMENT.
YOU WERE HERE WHEN I GOT HERE, AND I KNOW HOW THAT HAPPENED BECAUSE I'M SO MUCH OLDER THAN YOU.
AND AT THE MILITARY BALL, I MADE SURE AND SHARED WITH HIM THAT IN ALL THE YEARS I'VE BEEN HERE, BOTH AS FACULTY, SENATE PRESIDENT AND IN OTHER CAPACITIES, YOU HAVE DEFINITELY BEEN ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL AND MOST IMPRESSIVE PEOPLE TO SIT WHERE YOU'RE SITTING TODAY.
AND SO I KNOW WITHOUT A DOUBT THAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO AMAZING THINGS WHEREVER YOU GO.
YOU REPRESENTED YOUR CONSTITUENCY VERY WELL.
ASIDE FROM THAT, TODAY I HAD THE HONOR OF ATTENDING VIRTUALLY THE INAUGURAL MEETING.
THE INAUGURAL MEETING OF THE WHITE HOUSE IN THE WHITE HOUSE.
THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 250 ATTENDEES.
I WAS INVITED BY A FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE OF MINE, DR.
AND SO I AM HOPING THAT WITH THAT CONNECTION, THAT WE WILL BE ABLE TO LEVERAGE A LOT OF WHAT WE WANT TO DO HERE IN TERMS OF ESTABLISHING CERRITOS COLLEGE AS ONE OF THE PREMIER HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTIONS, IF NOT IN THE STATE, AND THEN IN THE NATION, BECAUSE WE HAVE EVERYTHING THAT WE NEED HERE AT CERRITOS AND WITH SOME EXTRA RESOURCES, WE CAN DO THAT AND MAKE CERRITOS VERY PROUD.
LIN WANG CERRITOS COLLEGE, FACULTY FEDERATION PRESIDENT.
SO ANOTHER FLOWER FOR CHRISTINA.
I'D LIKE TO TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY DURING EDUCATOR APPRECIATION WEEK TO THANK OUR FACULTY FOR THEIR TIRELESS, ALWAYS INNOVATIVE AND STUDENT FOCUSED WORK.
CERRITOS COLLEGE FACULTY CONTINUE TO WORK HARD TO ADVANCE THE MISSION OF THE COLLEGE.
FOR EXAMPLE, OUR TEAM OF DISTANCE EDUCATION COORDINATORS ARE SPEARHEADING IN THE WORK OF BECOMING A HOME COLLEGE FOR CVC OJAI TO BECOME A HOME COLLEGE FOR OUR COORDINATOR, SUPPORTED THROUGH, THROUGH TRAINING, BUILDING AND REVIEWING COURSES TO MEET THE PIER ONLINE COURSE, REVIEW POKER STANDARDS AND OFFER THESE COURSES ON THE CVC EXCHANGE.
THIS WORK IS KEY TO US FOR MEETING THE REQUIREMENTS TO RECEIVE THE 2223 COVID 19 EMERGENCY CONDITION ALLOWANCE, WHICH ENSURES THE DISTRICT'S APPORTIONMENT POST-COVID.
OUR COSMETOLOGY FACULTY HAVE OVERHAULED THEIR CURRICULUM TO SUPPORT STUDENT COMPLETION.
[00:20:03]
STARTING FALL 2023, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A COSMETOLOGIST IN ONE YEAR AND ESTHETICIAN IN ONE SEMESTER.ACROSS THE CAMPUS, FACULTY AND DENTAL ASSISTING, DENTAL HYGIENE, PARALEGAL AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY AND PHARMACY TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS ARE WORKING DILIGENTLY TO PREPARE FOR THEIR EXTERNAL ACCREDITATIONS.
IN BIOLOGY, FACULTY HAVE DEVELOPED TWO NEW BIOTECHNOLOGY CERTIFICATES AND ONE BIOTECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE OF SCIENCE. THESE NEW DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES WILL MEAN THAT OUR STUDENTS WILL BE BETTER PREPARED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE LOCAL LABOR MARKET AND OUR MATH FACULTY AND OUR CURRICULUM COMMITTEE AND OUR CURRICULUM COMMITTEE CHAIR HAVE BEEN NONSTOP WORKING TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF AB 1705. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO RECOGNIZE SUSAN LAPIER, CHRISTINE LOPEZ AND ED ROTHER FOR THEIR YEARS OF SERVICE AS FACULTY.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR EXPERTISE IN SCIENCE, MUSIC AND TECHNOLOGY.
TRUSTEES THIS IS ALL THE WORK HAPPENING BEHIND THE SCENES.
FACULTY CONTINUE TO INNOVATE, PROBLEM SOLVE, AND INSPIRE OUR STUDENTS ON A DAILY BASIS, SUPPORTING THEM IN THEIR EDUCATION JOURNEY AT CERRITOS COLLEGE AND BEYOND.
AS WE CLOSE OUT A YEAR OF GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS, I ALSO WANT TO LOOK AHEAD.
THIS JULY AND SUN SHINING FOR THE 2427 COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT.
I KNOW. JUST AROUND THE CORNER.
TRUSTEES, I BELIEVE WE'LL CONTINUE TO WORK TOGETHER TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF FACULTY AND STUDENTS BECAUSE FACULTY WORKING CONDITIONS ARE STUDENTS LEARNING CONDITIONS.
SO NEXT, WE INVITE ERLINDA LOPEZ, CALIFORNIA SCHOOL EMPLOYEE ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT.
WELL, IT'S HARD TO FOLLOW DENNIS AFTER THAT, RIGHT? YEAH, ABSOLUTELY BOTH.
SO TONIGHT, YOU WILL SEE THE RESOLUTION FOR CLASSIFIED SCHOOL EMPLOYEES WEEK.
WE'RE GOING TO BE CELEBRATING OUR CLASSIFIED STAFF DURING THE WEEK OF MAY 22ND.
WE DO APPRECIATE THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF CCW FOR US AND WE ALSO THANK THE DISTRICT FOR WORKING WITH US AND HELPING OUR OUR PROMOTE OUR WEEK FOR US AS WELL. SO I DO WANT TO THANK AND ACKNOWLEDGE THE DISTRICT FOR FOR THAT.
UM, DO WANT TO SAY KUDOS TO SHARON PLUMP.
SHE IS HERE TONIGHT AS OUR CLASSIFIED AWARD.
AND WE JUST WANT TO, YOU KNOW, LET HER KNOW THAT WE FEEL THE PAIN THAT SHE'S UNDER AND WE THANK HER FOR BEING ABLE TO SHARE WHAT A LOT OF PEOPLE SUFFER THROUGH, WHICH IS MENTAL HEALTH.
YOU KNOW, SHE TAKES CARE OF OUR FACILITY HERE ALONG WITH THE REST OF OUR COWORKERS.
AND SO TO HER, TO THE REST OF THE CLASSIFIED, I JUST WANT TO THANK THEM FOR ALL THE WORK THEY DO.
HOPEFULLY YOU HAVE A LOT OF SUCCESS, AND I KNOW YOU ALL ARE HUMBLED, SO THAT'S ALL.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
NEXT, WE'RE GOING TO INVITE OK PRESIDENT MARISA NAQVI.
THANK YOU. SO THIS IS OUR LAST MEETING AND WE DID WANT TO MAKE IT MEMORABLE. SO ME AND EMILY WILL BE GOING A LITTLE BACK AND FORTH.
GOOD EVENING, BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU ALL FOR ENGAGING WITH US THIS PAST YEAR.
WITH THAT BEING SAID, WE DO WANT TO GO OVER SOME UPDATES REGARDING THE RCC.
[00:25:04]
I WOULD LIKE TO BRIEFLY SHARE WITH YOU ALL THAT THE 2324 RCC BUDGET WAS OFFICIALLY REVISED AND AND APPROVED BY THE STUDENT SENATE AT OUR MEETING LAST WEEK.I ALSO WANT TO MENTION THE NON-DENOMINATIONAL PRAYER ROOM, WHICH THE RESOLUTION WILL BE DISCUSSED ON MAY 16TH WITH FACILITIES PLANNING, AND WE'LL HOPEFULLY FIND A SPACE ON CAMPUS FOR A PRAYER ROOM.
I APPLAUD THEM FOR THEIR DEDICATION AND DILIGENCE.
I ALSO WANT TO GIVE A QUICK SHOUT OUT TO OUR CHIEF JUSTICE, BRYCE TREVINO.
RAISE YOUR HAND. RAISE YOUR HAND.
THANK YOU. I ALSO WANT TO SECOND VICE PRESIDENT GOMEZ.
OUR BRANCHES HAVE MADE SOME GREAT CHANGES AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO, EVEN IF IT IS WITHOUT US.
AND YEAH, SO YEAH, IT'S BEEN AN AMAZING SEMESTER.
SO THANK YOU TO AND OUR ADVISORS.
SLAY THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LISTENING TO US.
[2.01 Institutional Presentation: Recognition of Classified/Confidential Employee of the Month]
SO WE'RE GOING TO MOVE ON TO THE SECTION TWO OPEN SESSION AGENDA.FIRST, WE'RE GOING TO DO THE INSTITUTION PRESENTATION.
THE BOARD TRUSTEE WILL HONOR SHARON POP GROUNDKEEPER IN THE FACILITY DEPARTMENT AS OUTSTANDING CLASSIFIED CONFIDENTIAL EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH OF APRIL 2023.
I THINK THIS IS HER FIFTH TIME OR SOMETHING.
CHIRON. SO WHEN I CAME TO THE ROOM AND I SAID, OH, CHIRON, CONGRATULATIONS.
AND I SAID, WELL, FINALLY YOU GET RECOGNIZED.
WELL, I'VE BEEN HERE FIVE TIMES BEFORE.
FUNNIEST PART OF ALL IS THAT I WASN'T ACTUALLY SURPRISED.
YOU COULD BE HAVING THE WORST DAY AS YOU COME IN.
AND SHE'S ALWAYS SMILING, ASKING SOMETHING ABOUT YOU.
SHE ASKS YOU SOMETHING THAT SHE REMEMBERED ABOUT YOU, AND THEN YOU START A CONVERSATION WHICH MAKES YOU FEEL ONCE RECOGNIZED TO ACKNOWLEDGE.
AND THREE, IT CHANGES YOUR MOOD FOR THE BETTER.
WE TALKED ABOUT ALL KINDS OF THINGS AND IT'S NEVER, EVER A DULL MOMENT.
WE TURN AROUND CAMPUS AND I KNOW THAT SHE DOES KNOW THAT SHE DOES NOT DO THAT JUST FOR ME.
I KNOW SHE DOES IT FOR ALL OF YOU EVERY TIME YOU SEE THEM.
BUT THE BEST PART OF EVERYTHING AROUND CHIRON IS THAT SHE DOES IT FOR OUR STUDENTS BECAUSE OFTEN TIMES BEFORE THE STUDENTS RUN INTO ANY OF US, THEY TALK TO THOSE WHO THEY SEE AND THEY FIND FAMILIARITY WITH.
AND IF IT WASN'T FOR PEOPLE LIKE CHIRON, WE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO ENGAGE SOME OF THOSE THAT ARE CONFUSED OR SCARED OR NOT REALLY READY TO WALK UP THE STAIRS TO GET THEM TO COUNSELING OR TO ADMISSIONS AND SO ON.
SO WHEN WE TALK ABOUT ACADEMIC SUCCESS, WHEN WE TALK ABOUT DOING THIS FROM MILE.
WE NEED TO REMEMBER THAT STUDENT SUCCESS IS THE WORK OF EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US.
SO I HAD A SCRIPT HERE TO READ, BUT I'M NOT SURE IF SHE WANT TO KEEP ME, KEEP HEARING ME TALK.
UM, BUT I'M GOING TO GO AHEAD AND READ IT ANYWAY.
[00:30:05]
SHARON PLUMB, GROUNDSKEEPER IN THE FACILITIES DEPARTMENT AS OUTSTANDING CLASSIFIED CONFIDENTIAL EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL 2023. SHARON BEGAN HER CAREER AT CERRITOS COLLEGE IN JANUARY 2012.SHARON'S SMILE AND ATTITUDE ARE INFECTIOUS AND A BRIEF MOMENT WITH HER ON THE WAY TO YOUR OFFICE WILL HOW YOU WALK IN AND FEELING A POSITIVE, FEELING POSITIVE IN TERMS OF HER WORK? SHARON TENDS TO HER ASSIGNED GROUNDS WITH RESPECT AND CARE, WHICH CAN BE SEEN EVERY DAY BY ALL.
GIVEN SHARON'S WORK ETHIC AND POSITIVE ENERGY, IT IS NO SURPRISE THIS IS SHARON'S SECOND TIME.
I AM MOST IMPRESSED THAT REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THE DAY IS EXCESSIVELY HOT OR TERRIBLY COLD, SHE IS HAPPY TO BE IN OUR CAMPUS AND HELP THE COLLEGE'S CORE VALUES TO PROMOTING EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE, RESPECT FOR OTHERS, FOSTERING INTEGRITY AND CELEBRATING DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVENESS. THESE ARE THE WORDS OF DR.
GUTIERREZ. SO THANK YOU, SHARON, FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO.
AND IT'S ALWAYS, ALWAYS A PLEASURE SEEING YOU AND TALKING TO YOU.
I TALK ENOUGH. NOW YOU GET A MIC.
THANK YOU. MY CERRITOS FAMILY.
PEOPLE ASK ME, WHERE DOES MY JOY COME FROM? FIRST AND FOREMOST, MY JOY COMES FROM MY LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST, AND I LIKE TO SHARE HIM WHENEVER I CAN.
MY JOY. SECOND COMES FROM BEING ABLE TO COME TO WORK AT CERRITOS COLLEGE.
I'M HERE WITH YOU MORE THAN I AM HOME.
AND SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE I'M APPRECIATED MORE FROM YOU THAN I AM AT HOME.
SO YOU SEE, THAT'S WHY I COME HERE MORE THAN I'M AT HOME.
I LOVE MY ADMINISTRATORS, MERCEDES FELIPE BOSS, AND MY IMMEDIATE BOSS, REBECCA.
I'M GOING TO PUT A PLUG IN FOR HER NOW.
I'VE SEEN THIS WOMAN GET MORE DONE IN THE LITTLE TIME SHE'S HERE.
SHE'S BEEN HERE THEN THE 12 YEARS.
SO A LOT OF WHAT YOU SEE GOING ON ON THE CAMPUS IS DUE TO REBECCA'S PROFESSIONALISM.
SHE'S NOT AFRAID TO GET IT DONE.
SO BUT ONCE AGAIN, YOU GUYS MAKE MY LIFE JUST.
WELL, THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THE CONDOLENCES FOR MY DAUGHTER'S PASSING.
IT MAKES IT EASIER TO COME TO WORK.
AND I JUST APPRECIATE ALL OF YOU.
AND I'LL BE HERE FOR THE LONG HAUL.
NO. TO THE PICTURE. OH, WE HAVE A PLUG FOR YOU TOO.
COME ON. MY BABY'S GOING TO COME.
HOLD IT FOR GRANDMA. YOU HOLD IT FOR GRANDMA.
GOT IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH, GUYS.
[2.02 Institutional Presentation: Recognition of Retiree]
SO NEXT INSTITUTIONAL PRESENTATION IS RECOGNITION RETIREE.AGAIN, THIS PERSON, YOU KNOW WE ALL KNOW HIM IS WELL RESPECT.
GARY PRITCHARD IS INSTITUTIONAL DEAN OF FINE ART AND COMMUNICATION, WILL GIVE A PRESENTATION
[00:35:02]
RECOGNIZE DR.CRISTINA LOPEZ AND DIRECTOR OF PIANO STUDY AND APPLIED MUSIC.
GOOD EVENING, TRUSTEES PRESIDENT PIERRO.
HER DEDICATION AND COMMITMENT TO STUDENTS IS EVIDENT IN THE MANY HOURS SHE SPENT COACHING THEM, ENCOURAGING THEM, GUIDING THEM TOWARD THEIR GOALS THROUGHOUT HER TENURE, LEADING THE APPLIED MUSIC PROGRAM.
SHE SERVED ON NUMEROUS COMMITTEES, COMMITTEES AND CONTRIBUTED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR MUSIC PROGRAM THROUGH HER INNOVATIVE IDEAS AND INSIGHTS, ONE OF WHICH WAS HER LEADERSHIP IN BRINGING THE FATHER OF CHICANO MUSIC, LALO GUERRERO, TO PERFORM AT CERRITOS COLLEGE.
THIS WAS DURING MY FIRST SEMESTER AT CERRITOS COLLEGE IN 1999.
IT WAS MY INTRODUCTION TO HER ENERGY AND INTEREST IN BRINGING OUR CAMPUS COMMUNITY TOGETHER.
MORE RECENTLY, I SAW HER JOIN HER COLLEAGUES ON STAGE IN CREATING AN ART DISCUSSION AND LIVE MUSIC PERFORMANCE TO HELP STUDENTS BETTER UNDERSTAND THE CONNECTION BETWEEN IMAGE AND SOUND.
AS WE BID FAREWELL TO CHRISTINE TONIGHT, WE DO SO WITH BOTH SADNESS AND GRATITUDE.
ARTHUR RUBINSTEIN SAID YOU CANNOT PLAY PIANO WELL UNLESS YOU ARE SINGING WITHIN ANYONE HAS HEARD CHRISTINE PLAY PIANO KNOWS SHE'S MOST DEFINITELY SINGING.
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR RETIREMENT, CHRISTINE.
WE WILL MISS YOU AND WE WISH YOU ALL THE BEST.
THANK YOU. PLEASE ACCEPT THIS TOKEN GESTURE.
HERE. I'M GOING TO PUT IT RIGHT HERE.
ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
THERE'S MORE. WAIT, THERE'S MORE.
I HAVE TO ADMIT, I'VE BEEN GETTING GIFTS ALL WEEK.
MY STUDENTS HAVE BEEN GIVING ME SO MANY THINGS.
BUT THANK YOU FOR THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT THIS EVENING.
AND MAY I JUST SAY THAT WHAT COMES TO MIND? SINCE I'VE DECIDED TO RETIRE AND REALIZE I'VE BEEN HERE 31 YEARS IS THAT TIME FLIES WHEN YOU'RE HAVING FUN.
I MEAN, IT'S I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHERE 31 YEARS WENT BECAUSE I ABSOLUTELY LOVE COMING TO TEACH HERE AT SERIOUS COLLEGE YEAR AFTER YEAR, DAY AFTER DAY. AND I HAVE TO THANK SO MANY PEOPLE FOR MAKING MY TIME HERE SO ENJOYABLE.
I WANT TO THANK THE ADMINISTRATION OVER THE YEARS THAT HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE TO SUPPORT ME, MY DEANS OVER THE YEARS THAT HAVE ALWAYS SUPPORTED ME WITH MY CRAZY IDEAS AND MY COLLEAGUES THAT I WORK WITH IN COMMITTEES AND IN MY DEPARTMENT, BUT ESPECIALLY IN MY STUDENTS.
THEY'VE BEEN MY JOY FOR SO MANY YEARS TO COME HERE.
AND LIKE SHARON SAID, YOU ARE A FAMILY.
AND I FELT IT ALL THE TIME THAT I'VE BEEN HERE.
SO IT IS BITTERSWEET BECAUSE I WILL MISS COMING TO CERRITOS COLLEGE EVERY DAY AND BEING A PART OF THIS WONDERFUL FAMILY. AND BUT I'VE MADE I DON'T KNOW, I JUST HAD I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY EXCEPT IT'S BEEN A JOY.
AND I THANK YOU ALL FOR ACKNOWLEDGING ME TONIGHT AND BEING THERE FOR ME ALL THESE YEARS.
BUT YES, I THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME LETTING ME BE HERE.
[00:40:01]
WHAT'S HERE? YEAH.COLLEGE YEAR. OH, MY GOODNESS.
THANK YOU. OH, AND A CERTIFICATE.
OH, OKAY. I TAKE A PICTURE OF MY FLOWERS.
OKAY. OH, I WAS SERIOUS ABOUT THIS STUFF.
THERE YOU GO. HOW CAN WE DO ALL THIS? OH, WE'LL PUT IT BACK. OKAY.
GARY, WHERE ARE YOU GOING? GARY? THIS IS SOMETHING THEY DO EVERY EVERYTHING.
UM, WHEN I THINK ABOUT CHRISTINE, THERE ARE TWO BIG THINGS.
PROFESSIONAL. JUST INCREDIBLY PROFESSIONAL.
EVERY INTERACTION I HAVE EVER HAD WITH CHRISTINE IS OF THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF PROFESSIONALISM.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND I ANYTIME I COULD.
I WILL MAKE THE TIME TO NOT ONLY GO AND SEE HER PLAY, BUT I SEE HER STUDENT PLAY AND IT WAS ALWAYS AMAZING.
SO IF YOU HAVEN'T GOTTEN THE CHANCE JUST YET.
ALL RIGHT. SO NEXT INSTITUTIONAL PRESENTATION IS AFRICANA STUDY DEPARTMENT, AND IT'S BY DR.
[2.03 Institutional Presentation: Africana Studies Department]
NATALIE SARTIN, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND CHAIR.AND THEN JUST KIND OF POINT IN THAT DIRECTION.
OKAY. WELL, HELLO TO THE BOARD AND ALSO TO DR.
FIERRO. THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRESENT ON BLACK AFRICANA STUDIES.
AGAIN, MY NAME IS NATALIE SARTON.
I'M IN MY SEVENTH YEAR HERE AT CERRITOS COLLEGE.
I ALSO SERVE AS FACULTY SENATE SECRETARY, SO THANK YOU.
THERE IT GOES. OKAY, SO HERE, I WANT TO GIVE YOU SOME INFORMATION ON OUR PROGRAM.
AS YOU CAN SEE, JULIE TRAGER IS LISTED ON OUR ON THIS POWERPOINT.
BLACK AFRICANA STUDIES WAS BORN OUT OF THE 20 1617 FALCON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY.
AND THROUGH THAT WORK SHE HAD CREATED TWO COURSES.
ONE WAS BLACK IMAGES AND POP CULTURE AND ALSO AFRICAN ART HISTORY.
AND SO I WORKED WITH MANY FROM ACROSS THE CAMPUS OR PULLED SOME FROM ACROSS CAMPUS, INCLUDING UMOJA, THE COORDINATOR OF UMOJA, UMOJA, SHEILA HILL, TO SUPPORT THIS WORK AND THIS PROJECT.
SO AS OF TODAY WE HAVE FOUR STANDALONE COURSES.
LAST WEEK, 26 STUDENTS HAVE DECLARED SOCIAL JUSTICE STUDIES, AFRICANA STUDIES.
[00:45:01]
A MAJOR AND SEVEN STUDENTS HAVE DECLARED BLACK AFRICANA STUDIES AS A MAJOR.OKAY. SO CERRITOS IS UNIQUE IN THAT IT IS ONE OF THE ONLY COMMUNITY COLLEGES IN THIS AREA TO OFFER AN AFRICANA STUDIES AA. MOST COMMUNITY COLLEGES THAT OFFER AN AFRICANA STUDIES ARE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AND AS YOU CAN SEE, MOST WERE CREATED DECADES AGO.
THIS WAS THE FIRST ETHNIC STUDIES PROGRAM IN DEPARTMENT IN THE COUNTRY.
SO MOST OF THE CSU'S IN OUR AREA OFFER EITHER AN AFRICANA STUDIES OR AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES BA, WHICH CREATES A NATURAL PATHWAY FOR FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO EARN THEIR AA WITH US AND WANT TO PURSUE A BA IN AFRICANA STUDIES.
SO WHY STUDY AFRICANA STUDIES? SO THE DISCIPLINE BLACK AFRICANA BLACK STUDIES, WHICH IS NOW AFRICANA STUDIES, IS DEFINED AS THE CRITICAL AND SYSTEMATIC STUDY OF THE THOUGHT AND PRACTICE OF AFRICAN PEOPLE AND THEIR CURRENT AND HISTORICAL UNFOLDING.
OKAY, SO HERE IS OUR SOCIAL JUSTICE STUDIES, AFRICANA STUDIES ART.
THIS IS AN 18 TO 19 UNIT PROGRAM.
OKAY. SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS PROGRAM ARE IT OFFERS STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CALIFORNIA PROMISE PROGRAM, WHICH INCLUDES PRIORITY REGISTRATION PRIVILEGES. IT PREPARES STUDENTS FOR SEAMLESS TRANSFER TO A CSU, AND IT GUARANTEES CSU ENROLLMENT.
OKAY, HERE IS OUR BLACK AFRICANA STUDIES AA.
THIS IS AN 18 UNIT DEGREE PROGRAM.
OKAY. YOU'LL NOTICE ON THIS PROGRAM THAT OUR THREE NEWEST COURSES, WHICH WILL OFFER IN FALL, WILL BEGINNING ONE BEGINNING IN FALL OF 2023 AND THE TWO OTHER SPRING OF 2024. THESE ARE STANDALONE COURSES.
THEY'RE INCLUDED IN THIS PROGRAM.
OKAY. AND HERE IS OUR OUR BLACK AFRICANA STUDIES CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT.
OKAY, HERE ARE SOME DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS AND SO I'LL HIGHLIGHT A FEW.
THIS SERVED AS ONE OF OUR VIRTUAL INFORMATION OUTREACH EVENTS.
AND HERE ARE TWO OTHER EVENTS THAT WE PARTNERED WITH THE PHILOSOPHY AND HISTORY DEPARTMENTS.
OKAY. AND HERE ARE SOME OF OUR OUTREACH EFFORTS.
WE WILL SORRY, INCLUDING DUAL ENROLLMENT WHICH WILL BE PARTICIPATING IN AGAIN THIS FALL.
THIS YEAR WE DID PARTICIPATE IN SENIOR PREVIEW DAY AND THEN ON THE RIGHT IN TERMS OF UPCOMING EVENTS, WE'RE HONORED FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH TRUSTEE DON GREEN ON A BLACK AFRICANA STUDIES INFORMATION SESSION.
THEY'LL MEET WITH ENROLLMENT SERVICES THERE AND THEY'LL ALSO LEARN MORE ABOUT ABOUT ADULT ED PROGRAMS. ALL HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE AREA HAVE BEEN INVITED, AS WELL AS SOME COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS DELTA CHAPTERS IN THIS AREA.
AND THIS IS COURTESY OF TRUSTEE GREEN.
SO I'D LIKE TO END BY THANKING YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRESENT ON BLACK AFRICANA STUDIES.
AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK AGAIN TRUSTEE GREEN FOR HER SUPPORT.
I'D ALSO LIKE TO LIKE TO THANK VP WISEAU FOR HIS SUPPORT OF OUR PROGRAM AS WELL.
AND ALSO I'D LIKE TO THANK DEAN FRANK MIXON AS A DEAN.
HE SUPPORTED OUR VISION AND WORK SINCE HE WAS INTERIM.
EVEN AS WE WERE MOVED TO HHS, WE WERE BORN OUT OF LIBERAL ARTS, BUT WE WERE MOVED TO HHS.
I STILL MET WITH FRANK REGULARLY TO BRAINSTORM IDEAS RELATED TO OUR PROGRAM AND GET FEEDBACK FROM HIM, SO I'M CERTAIN WE WOULDN'T HAVE PROGRESSED THIS FAR WITHOUT HIS SUPPORT. THANK YOU.
OKAY. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE PRESENTATION.
DR. SARTON, DO YOU HAVE A SISTER NAMED NICOLE?
[00:50:02]
I DO. DOES SHE STILL WORK AT LBCC? SHE DID. OH, MY GOSH.SO AND IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE I ALWAYS SAW YOUR NAME AND IT'S NOT A VERY COMMON LAST NAME.
SO WHENEVER I SAW IT, I WAS LIKE, AND IT'S AN N AND I'M LIKE, I WONDER IF SHE'S RELATED TO NICOLE? OH MY GOSH, SUCH A SMALL WORLD.
BUT ANYWAY, I LOVE HER. SHE WAS FANTASTIC.
I MEAN, THAT'S REALLY EXCITING.
AND I THINK, YOU KNOW, IT'S SO UNFORTUNATE THAT I DIDN'T LEARN THAT GROWING UP AS A STUDENT.
SO AGAIN, HAD TO LEARN IT AS AN ADULT.
I WOULD LOVE FOR YOU TO BE ABLE TO, OF COURSE, OUTREACH WITH BELLFLOWER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT AS WELL, TOO, FOR DUAL ENROLLMENT, BECAUSE AGAIN, I THINK WE HAVE A VERY LARGE STUDENT POPULATION THAT WOULD BE VERY INTERESTED IN THIS SORT OF WORK.
AGAIN, ANYTHING I CAN DO TO HELP WITH MAYFAIR AND BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL.
I MEAN, THAT'S THOSE ARE MY SCHOOLS.
AND I THINK I LOVE THIS BECAUSE I REMEMBER, YOU KNOW, AS AS A YOUNG STUDENT, WHEN YOU WOULD SEE THINGS, THEY'D BE LIKE, OH, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THAT TYPE OF DEGREE? RIGHT, RIGHT. THAT WAS SOMETHING THAT WE WERE LIKE DISCOURAGED, RIGHT, FROM STUDYING AND STUFF.
BUT I JUST THINK THAT THERE'S SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES AND I THINK LIKE THE SKILLS AND SOME OF THE THE HISTORY AND THE WRITING AND THE ANALYSIS, IT'S REALLY TRANSLATES TO ANY CAREER. SO I JUST WANTED JUST TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT.
BUT YEAH, WE'LL HAVE TO EXCHANGE INTO I'M GOING TO EMAIL YOU SO WE CAN CONNECT.
SO. YOU WANT TO SAY SOMETHING? TRUSTEE GREEN. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO DR.
SARTON AND ALL THE WORK THAT HAS BEEN DONE WITH THE AFRICANA STUDIES DEPARTMENT.
IT'S JUST, YOU KNOW, IT'S BEEN A PLEASURE TO BE ABLE TO BE IN MEETINGS WITH BOTH DR.
SARTON AND DEAN AND GOING OVER, YOU KNOW, PRETTY MUCH HOW CAN WE REACH OUR COMMUNITY.
AND SO, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF TIMES, YOU KNOW, STUDENTS AREN'T ABLE TO GET ACCESS TO CULTURALLY RELEVANT LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AT THEIR SCHOOL SITE.
AND SO FOR THEM TO HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY, ESPECIALLY THROUGH THE DUAL ENROLLMENT, I JUST I'M EXCITED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES AND ABOUT THE FUTURE THAT THIS PROGRAM HOLDS HERE AT CERRITOS COLLEGE.
THANK YOU FOR BEING ON THE FRONT LINE OF THIS HERE IN OUR LOCAL AREA.
SO I KNOW THAT WE CAN TRULY MAKE A MARK.
WELL. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU FOR THE PRESENTATION.
[2.04 Institutional Presentation - Annual Safety Report]
SO NEXT INSTITUTIONAL PRESENTATION IS ANNUAL SAFETY REPORT.DAN MUELLER, OUR CHIEF OF CAMPUS POLICE, WILL PROVIDE AN ANNUAL SAFETY REPORT FOR US.
I KNOW THE FALL SPRING WELL, OKAY, SO, SO I'M A WHOLE SEASON BEHIND.
I KNOW. I JUST TOOK YOU BACK IN TIME SINCE WE WERE OFF CAMPUS FOR SO LONG.
IT'S REALLY THE FIRST FULL YEAR WE'VE HAD BACK ON CAMPUS.
SO WE JUST WANTED TO KIND OF GIVE YOU AN OVERVIEW SUMMARY OF WHERE WE'RE AT SAFETY WISE ON THE CAMPUS NOW THAT WE'VE COMPLETED BOTH THE FALL AND THE SPRING SEMESTERS AND ARE COMING CLOSE TO AN END TO THAT.
SO WE JUST WANT TONIGHT GO OVER SOME OF THE PAST YEAR WHERE WE'RE AT SAFETY WISE ON CAMPUS, SOME OF OUR CRIME STATS WHERE WE'RE AT, SOME OF THE PROGRAMS WE'RE DOING AND WHERE WE'RE HEADED SAFETY WISE AS A DEPARTMENT.
AND LET'S SEE IF OUR DEAL WILL WORK.
THERE WE GO. STARTING OFF, WHICH IS THE REALLY GOOD NEWS THAT I WANTED TO BE ABLE TO SHARE WITH YOU.
IN THE PAST YEAR, WE HAVE HAD NONE.
WE HAVE HAD NO SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON THE CAMPUS.
WE HAVE HAD NO ARRESTS FOR WEAPONS ON OUR CAMPUS IN THIS FIRST YEAR BACK.
WE'VE HAD NO DRUG ARRESTS ON CAMPUS, NOT A SINGLE ONE.
[00:55:09]
DIRECTION. WE HAVEN'T SEEN ANY OF THAT.AND WE'VE HAD ZERO HATE CRIMES OR HATE INCIDENTS ON CAMPUS IN THIS FIRST THIS FIRST YEAR BACK.
WONDERFUL NEWS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU KNOW WHAT THE CRIME IS LIKE IN THE AREA AROUND OUR CAMPUS.
WE HAD A SHOOTING AT THE OFF RAMP RIGHT HERE ON THE THING.
I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT THAT YOU'VE GIVEN US THAT WE CAN SUPPORT THE CAMPUS AND THAT I THINK THOSE OUTSIDE DOING ILLICIT ACTIVITIES AND LOOKING TO DO THOSE TYPES OF THINGS REALIZE THAT WE HAVE A FULL TIME FORCE ON CAMPUS.
THEY SEE THEM ALL THE TIME AND WE PROTECT OUR FAMILY.
WE ARE VERY PROTECTIVE OF OUR CERRITOS FAMILY ON CAMPUS.
THE FEW CRIMES THAT WE HAVE HAD, WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL THEFTS ON CAMPUS.
GRAND THEFTS ARE BASICALLY ANY THEFT, OVER $900 IN VALUE.
FIVE OF THOSE NINE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS IS A IT IS A TREND ACROSS THE COUNTRY, ALL OVER LA COUNTY, CERRITOS MALL GETS SEVERAL A DAY.
I'VE BEEN TOLD IT'S VERY HARD TO PREVENT IT BECAUSE IT IS SO FAST.
PEOPLE CAN STEAL A CATALYTIC CONVERTER IN ABOUT A MINUTE TO TWO MINUTES.
I THINK PHILIPPE WATCHED ONE OF THE VIDEOS THAT WE HAD RECENTLY AND IT WAS LESS THAN A MINUTE.
THEY LITERALLY PULL UP NEXT TO A PARKED CAR.
THEY GET OUT OF THE THE DRIVER'S SIDE SLIDE RIGHT UNDER THE CAR NEXT TO THEM, CUT IT, THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER SLIDE RIGHT INTO THE CAR AND DRIVE OFF AND THEY'RE GONE WITHIN TWO MINUTES. IT IS VERY HARD TO PREVENT.
THE REASON THEY'RE STEALING CATALYTIC CONVERTERS IS BECAUSE OF THE METALS THAT ARE INSIDE OF THEM.
THEY'RE THOSE METALS ARE WORTH A LOT OF MONEY.
AN AVERAGE CATALYTIC CONVERTER.
YOU COULD SELL IT TO SOME OF THE JUNK SHOPS FOR AROUND 1500 UP TO $2,000.
SO FOR A TWO MINUTE CRIME, YOU CAN MAKE $2,000 EACH.
YOU GO TO CERRITOS MALL AND STEAL 5 OR 6 OF THOSE IN ONE DAY.
WE'RE TALKING TEN GRAND IN ONE DAY.
THAT'S WHY THE THEFTS ARE SO HIGH.
WE ARE DOING OUR BEST AT TRYING TO PREVENT THAT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
WE ARE GOING TO BE PUTTING OUT AN EDUCATION CAMPAIGN TO ALL OF OUR STAFF AND FACULTY AND HOPEFULLY FORWARD THAT TO OUR STUDENTS ALSO ON SOME OF THE THINGS THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO DO TO THEIR OWN VEHICLES TO HELP PREVENT IT OR MAKE THEIR CAR A LITTLE MORE HARDENED SO THEY'RE LESS LIKELY TO BE THE VICTIM OF A CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFT.
NOT BAD AT ALL, CONSIDERING IT'S A SMALL GET SEVERAL A DAY.
THOSE ARE MINOR THEFTS, LESS THAN $900.
FIVE OF THOSE WERE BIKES THAT WERE STOLEN.
A FEW OF THOSE BIKES WERE NOT EVEN LOCKED.
AND THAT IS TWO OF THOSE THEFTS WERE VENDING MACHINES THAT WERE VANDALIZED OVER THE WEEKENDS.
WE'VE HAD TWO THEFTS OF VEHICLES ON CAMPUS THAT WERE REPORTED.
ONE OF THOSE MAY HAVE BEEN A REPOSSESSION, BUT THE INDIVIDUAL REPORTED IT AS A THEFT ANYWAYS.
AND WE'VE HAD THREE INCIDENTS OF GRAFFITI THAT WERE DOCUMENTED ON CAMPUS.
HATE CRIME RELATED OR ANYTHING MAJOR.
A LOT OF THEM WERE JUST RANDOM GRAFFITI AND THANK YOU TO FACILITIES.
THOSE THINGS WERE CLEANED UP BEFORE.
COVERING THAT STUFF UP AND IT WAS GONE.
SO FACILITIES HAVE BEEN A WONDERFUL SUPPORT TO US ON SOME OF THOSE THINGS.
I'M REALLY HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE OUR AVERAGE RESPONSE TIME ON CAMPUS.
WE WENT BACK AND AVERAGED THEM OUT FOR EMERGENCY CALLS, WHICH WERE WE HAVEN'T HAD A LOT OF EMERGENCY CALLS ON CAMPUS, BUT FIRE ALARMS, POSSIBLE FIRES, WE CONSIDER EMERGENT MEDICAL RESPONSE, WHERE WE'RE CALLING PARAMEDICS, THAT WE RESPOND ALSO BECAUSE WE ALWAYS GET THERE BEFORE THE PARAMEDICS GET HERE.
ANY INJURY CALLS? OUR AVERAGE TIME HAS BEEN A MINUTE AND 15 SECONDS TO BE AT THE SITE IN THE BUILDING AND THE CLASSROOM OR IN THE
[01:00:05]
OFFICE WHERE THEY WERE CALLING.SOME OF THOSE WERE LESS. SOME OF THOSE WERE LESS THAN A MINUTE.
A COUPLE OF THEM WERE ABOUT A MINUTE, 45 SECONDS OR SO.
BUT A MINUTE 15 SECONDS IS OUTSTANDING.
WHEN I USED TO WORK FOR THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, OUR GOAL ON EMERGENCY CALLS WAS 6 TO 7 MINUTES OUT IN THE FIELD FOR US TO BE THERE WITHIN A MINUTE AND 15 SECONDS ON CAMPUS.
AND WE WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT IF WE DO HAVE AN EMERGENCY, WE'RE GOING TO BE THERE.
WE'RE GOING TO BE THERE QUICK WHEN IT'S AN EMERGENCY.
IT IS NOT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT'S JOB ALONE.
SOME OF THE SERVICES THAT WE OFFER IN PARTNERSHIP, SOME WITH OTHERS, AND SOME FROM OUR DEPARTMENT.
JUST AS A REMINDER, WE OFFER ESCORT SERVICES EVERY DAY, EVERY NIGHT, ANY TIME OF THE DAY OR NIGHT TO ANY OF OUR STUDENTS, ANY OF OUR STAFF, ANY OF OUR FACULTY, THAT IF THEY FEEL DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE WALKING TO THEIR CAR OR WALKING INTO THE OFFICE OR THEY'VE HAD PROBLEMS AT HOME AND THEY'RE WORRIED ABOUT SOMEBODY FROM HOME FOLLOWING THEM ON THE CAMPUS AND THEY JUST LIKE SOMEBODY TO ESCORT THEM TO THEIR OFFICE.
IF WE'RE NOT PUT OUT, WE DON'T MAKE PEOPLE FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE.
WE DO IT EVERY DAY, ALL THE TIME.
THAT'S PART OF THE SERVICE WE OFFER.
WE'RE MORE THAN HAPPY TO PROVIDE THAT TO ANYBODY ON OUR CAMPUS THAT WANTS AN ESCORT.
JUST LET US KNOW AND WE'RE HAPPY TO DO IT.
DAY AFTER DAY FACILITIES AND OUR DEPARTMENT HAVE PARTNERED TOGETHER EVERY SINGLE DAY.
REBECCA SNUCK OUT OF HERE, BUT I WISH SHE WAS HERE.
SHE GETS THE EMAILS EVERY MORNING.
OUR OFFICERS WILL BRING IT TO OUR DISPATCHERS IF THEY SPOT SOMETHING THE DISPATCHERS DON'T DO.
WE HAVE BEEN IN PARTNERSHIP, AS YOU KNOW, WITH OUR SAFETY COMMITTEE.
THEY'VE BEEN OUR EYES AND EARS ON THE CAMPUS QUITE OFTEN WALKING AROUND, NOTICING AREAS THAT NEED TO BE IMPROVED, THAT MAYBE WE AS A POLICE DEPARTMENT HAVE MISSED OR DIDN'T SEE SO THAT THEY CAN BRING TO OUR ATTENTION.
SOME OF IT'S PHYSICAL SAFETY THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED SO SOMEBODY DOESN'T GET HURT.
BUT THE SAFETY COMMITTEE HAS BEEN WORKING WITH OUR DEPARTMENT TO IDENTIFY THOSE THINGS, BRING IT TO FACILITIES, FIX THOSE ITEMS BEFORE THEY BECOME A HAZARD, WHETHER YOU KNOW IT OR NOT.
WE DO A LOT OF TRAINING ON OUR CAMPUS.
MYSELF, WE'VE GOT SEVERAL ABOUT FOUR OF US IN THE DEPARTMENT THAT DO TRAINING ON CAMPUS IN PARTNERSHIP, EITHER WITH AARON MILES OR TITLE NINE DIVERSITY COORDINATOR OR WITH OUR VICTIM ADVOCATE.
QUITE OFTEN, ESPECIALLY IN THE BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTERS, BEGINNING OF THE FALL SEMESTER, WE WILL BE DOING TRAINING WITH OUR SPORTS TEAMS. WE'LL BE DOING TRAINING WITH ALL OF OUR MANDATED REPORTERS SO THAT THEY KNOW HOW TO PROTECT THEMSELVES AND HOW TO ADVISE OUR STUDENTS TO PROTECT THEMSELVES SO THEY KNOW THEIR REPORTING RESPONSIBILITIES FOR OUR STAFF THAT HAVE TO REPORT.
BUT WE PROVIDE TRAINING ON A REGULAR BASIS YEAR ROUND.
NEXT. FALL, WE ARE GOING TO BE BRINGING BACK RAD TRAINING, WHICH IS OUR RAPE AGGRESSION, DEFENSE TRAINING THAT WAS KIND OF SUSPENDED DURING COVID BECAUSE IT'S VERY HANDS ON AND VERY CLOSE. BUT I THINK WE'RE BACK AT THE POINT THAT AT LEAST FOR THOSE THAT ARE COMFORTABLE DOING IT, WE'RE READY TO START OFFERING THAT AGAIN.
SO I HAVE TWO OF MY OFFICERS THAT ARE RAD TRAINED, CERTIFIED INSTRUCTORS, AND WE'LL BE OFFERING RAPE DEFENSE CLASSES TO ANY OF OUR STUDENTS ON CAMPUS OR STAFF ON CAMPUS THAT WOULD LIKE THAT SUPPORT AND THAT UNDERSTANDING.
WE PARTNERED WITH RAVE AS WHICH WE MENTIONED A LITTLE BIT AT OUR LAST MONTH'S MEETING, OUR PERSONAL SECURITY APP, WHICH WE ARE GOING TO BE CUSTOMIZING IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS TO BECOME OUR OWN PERSONAL CERRITOS COLLEGE PERSONAL SECURITY APP.
BUT THAT HAS ONE BUTTON TOUCH FACILITY TO GET ABILITIES TO GET HOLD OF CAMPUS POLICE.
IT HAS DIRECT CONNECTIONS TO GET HOLD OF OUR VICTIM.
JUST AS A REMINDER THAT WE OFFER OUT OF OUR POLICE DEPARTMENT HERE, WE DO LIVE SCAN TRAINING AND MOST OF YOU PROBABLY WALKED INTO OUR STATION TO GET LIVE SCANNED, PRINTED AT SOME POINT. WE OFFER THAT, AND ALONG WITH THAT, OUR CADETS, WE DO ALL THE PARKING ENFORCEMENT ON CAMPUS, OUR CADETS.
[01:05:05]
I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THEM BECAUSE THEIR VISIBILITY IS HELPS PEOPLE FEEL SECURE.THEY ARE OUT AND ABOUT ALL THE TIME.
NOW, SOME PEOPLE DON'T LIKE IT IF THEY GET A PARKING TICKET, AND I UNDERSTAND THAT.
BUT IT'S A BOARD. I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT YOU UNDERSTAND THIS YEAR.
WELL, THE LITTLE THING COVERED IT UP.
BUT WE OUR CADETS, WE RAISED A LITTLE OVER $364,000 IN PARKING REVENUES THIS YEAR THAT GO INTO OUR BUDGET FROM THE SALE OF PARKING PERMITS AND CITATIONS TO THOSE WHO DIDN'T BUY PERMITS AND PARK ON OUR CAMPUS.
SO WE JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW WHERE THAT'S AT.
BUT OUR CADETS, ABOUT HALF OF THEM ARE STUDENTS FROM OUR CAMPUS.
I'D SAY WE'RE RIGHT ABOUT 50%, WHICH PROVIDES THEM WITH EMPLOYMENT ON OUR CAMPUS RIGHT HERE.
AND IT ALSO BUILDS THAT CONNECTION BETWEEN OUR STUDENTS AND OUR OFFICERS AND OUR DEPARTMENT.
I THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT THING THAT WE RECOGNIZE IS THAT ACROSS OUR COUNTRY, THE MAJORITY OF OUR COMMUNITIES OF COLOR AND OUR DISENFRANCHIZED COMMUNITIES ARE OFTEN AT ODDS WITH THEIR POLICE DEPARTMENTS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES ON THIS CAMPUS.
WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO KNOW THAT WE ARE THEIR DEPARTMENT.
SAFETY IS NOT JUST ABOUT LOW CRIME.
IT'S ABOUT FEELING THAT YOU HAVE SUPPORT AND BACKUP WHEN YOU'RE HERE.
AND WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO KNOW WHEN THEY COME HERE AND THEY SEE OUR OFFICERS WALKING OR DRIVING BY, WE WANT THEM TO KNOW THAT THOSE OFFICERS SUPPORT THEM, ARE THERE FOR THEM NOT TO BE AFRAID OF THEM, BUT TO FEEL A BOND WITH THE OFFICERS ON OUR CAMPUS SO THAT OUR STUDENTS FEEL SAFE ON THIS CAMPUS WHEN THEY SEE A POLICE OFFICER WALKING BY.
I THINK THAT'S WHERE WE'RE HEADED.
THAT'S WHERE WE'RE STRIVING TO BE.
I THINK THIS PAST YEAR, I'M REALLY HAPPY WITH WHERE WE'VE BEEN.
YOU'VE SEEN SOME OF THE SOME OF THE SMALL THINGS WE DO ON CAMPUS.
THAT'S THEM DONATING JACKETS AND SHIRTS.
THE FALCONS NEST. WE DONATE BLANKETS.
THIS YEAR. WE ARE OUT WITH OUR SPORTS TEAMS SUPPORTING THEM, CHEERING FOR THEM.
SO WE HAVE MADE A BIG ISSUE THAT WE HAVE A FULLY ACTIVE FACEBOOK PAGE.
WE HAVE AN ACTIVE INSTAGRAM PAGE, WE HAVE UPDATED OUR WEBSITE.
THERE'S A SCREENSHOT OF IT THERE THAT IS VERY INTERACTIVE, THAT HAS ALL THE INFORMATION THEY NEED BECAUSE THAT'S WHERE THEY LIVE ON THOSE PHONES AND WE WANT THEM TO KNOW IF YOU EVER IF YOU ARE NOT FOLLOWING OUR FACEBOOK PAGE, OUR INSTAGRAM PAGE AND YOU'RE ON SOCIAL MEDIA, PLEASE FOLLOW US BECAUSE I WANT YOU TO SEE WHERE YOUR POLICE DEPARTMENT IS AT. IF YOU LOOK AT OUR DEPARTMENT'S PAGES, YOU WILL SEE DIVERSITY IN ABOUNDING ACROSS OUR STUFF THAT I NEVER SAW FROM THE L.A. COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT WHEN I WAS THERE.
AND THAT'S WHERE WE SHOULD BE AT.
YOU'LL SEE US CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGES.
YOU'LL SEE US CELEBRATING ROSH HASHANAH.
YOU'LL SEE ACROSS THE BOARD HANUKKAH.
YOU WILL. WE EXUDE OUR DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVITY WITH OUR DEPARTMENT.
AND WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO KNOW THAT IT'S ALL PART OF OUR PROCESS OF BUILDING THOSE BRIDGES, BUILDING THOSE GAPS, BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT HELPS US BE A SAFE CAMPUS AND HELPS OUR STUDENTS FEEL SAFE.
SO ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS I CAN ANSWER REAL QUICK? ANYTHING FROM THE PAST YEAR? YOU HAVE A COUPLE OF THINGS. SO WHEN A CRIME IS REPORTED IS DOES THAT GO DIRECTLY TO THE CERRITOS COLLEGE POLICE DEPARTMENT OR IS THAT FILTERED FROM THE LA SHERIFF'S COMES DIRECTLY TO US.
OKAY, GREAT. YEAH. CRIMES ON THE CAMPUS HERE GET REPORTED TO US.
RIGHT. SO GOING BACK TO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS, YOU KNOW, SOME OF THE CITIES AROUND US HAVE PASSED AN ORDINANCE THAT WOULD MAKE IT AN ADMINISTRATIVE CITATION OR WHAT HAVE YOU, TO HAVE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS IN YOUR VEHICLE OR OTHERWISE ON YOUR PERSON WITHOUT PROPER DOCUMENTATION FOR THAT. SO IS THAT SOMETHING THAT WE CAN EXPLORE FOR GIVING YOU A LEGAL TOOL TO HELP PREVENT SOME OF THAT CATALYTIC CONVERTER?
[01:10:03]
WE CAN LOOK AT IT.IT'S MORE LIKELY THE CITY IS GOING TO STOP SOMEBODY WHO'S BEEN DOING THE THEFTS THAT WILL HAVE ONES ON THEM, BECAUSE IF THEY STEAL IT HERE, IT'S ONLY FROM THE TIME THEY DRIVE FROM THAT PARKING SPACE OUT THE DRIVEWAY AND THEY'RE GONE.
IF WE CATCH THEM THERE, WE'LL PROBABLY CATCH THEM IN THE ACT OF THE CRIME.
IF WE'RE THERE THAT FAST AND WE'LL ARREST THEM FOR THE ACTUAL THEFT.
EVERYBODY IN THE STATE IS STRUGGLING WITH IT ON WHAT THEY DO.
BUT ONE OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THAT IS THEY'RE NOT ALWAYS RESELLING THEM.
THEY'RE DESTROYING THEM AND TAKING THEM FOR THE METALS.
IN ALL HONESTY, I'M IF WE BELIEVE THAT WILL HELP, YES, I'LL ABSOLUTELY BRING IT BACK TO YOU.
OKAY. IF WE THINK THAT'LL HELP, IF WE CAN COME UP WITH A WAY THAT YOU CAN HELP US WITH IT.
I MEAN, WE'RE NOT GETTING OVERLY FIVE IN A YEAR IS NOT A LOT.
RIGHT. BUT WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THAT 1 OR 2.
THE MORE WE CAN KNOCK THAT DOWN, THE BETTER, CONSIDERING HOW MANY VEHICLES THERE ARE.
THAT'S THAT'S DEFINITELY A GOOD NUMBER.
LAST QUESTION IS, WHAT WERE THE OTHER FOUR GRAND THEFTS? IF YOU REMEMBER TRYING TO REMEMBER WHAT? I DON'T REMEMBER ALL OF THEM.
CRIME OF THE YEAR WAS INTERNAL.
IT WAS AN EMPLOYEE AND EMBEZZLED FUNDS FROM US.
THAT WAS ONE OF THOSE THAT WAS GIFT CARDS AND IT WAS IN THE VERY HIGH NUMBERS.
AND WE WERE ABLE TO RECOVER MORE THAN ALMOST $35,000 OF THOSE GIFT CARDS BACK.
THAT EMPLOYEE HAS BEEN FIRED AND HAS BEEN CHARGED AND IS STILL AWAITING PROSECUTION.
IN FACT, I JUST CALLED THIS WEEK AND THE PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SET FOR JUNE 30TH ON THAT EMPLOYEE.
SO IT WAS ACTUALLY INTERNAL, NOT SOMEBODY OUTSIDE.
MOST OF THE OTHERS I KNOW, WE HAD 1 OR 2 LAPTOPS AND THEY PROBABLY GOT PUT AS GRAND THEFTS.
WE HAD ONE, MAYBE A CELL PHONE THAT MAY HAVE IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN AN IPHONE.
THOSE TEND TO BE OVER 900 BUCKS.
SO THEY FALL UNDER THE GRAND THEFT CATEGORY.
MOST OF THAT STUFF HAS BEEN THOSE TYPE OF ITEMS. AND QUITE OFTEN IT'S EDUCATION WE'RE ALWAYS DOING WITH OUR STUDENTS.
ONE OF THE CELL PHONES I KNOW WAS LEFT CHARGING IN THE LIBRARY AND THEY WENT TO LUNCH AND CAME BACK AND COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT SOMEBODY WOULD HAVE TAKEN THEIR CELL PHONE. IT'S AS LA WE STILL HAVE EDUCATION TO DO.
UNFORTUNATELY, WE HAVEN'T HAD ANY MAJOR TARGETS LIKE BREAKING MAJOR BREAK INS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT.
OUR WORST CRIME WAS AN INTERNAL ONE.
SO. OKAY, ANY OTHER QUESTIONS I CAN ANSWER? OKAY. THANK YOU, CHIEF, FOR THE REPORT.
THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WORK YOU'RE DOING.
AND I JUST WANT TO MENTION AND JUST TO ADD TO THE WORK THAT YOU SAID THAT IS HAPPENING ON CAMPUS AND MAKING SURE THAT OUR STUDENTS FEEL COMFORTABLE AROUND OUR OFFICES.
AND YOU I WAS YESTERDAY AT THE LAVENDER GRADUATION OR SECOND ONE.
AND NOT ONLY THE CHIEF WAS THERE NO MONITORING.
SO OBVIOUSLY YOUR INVOLVEMENT ON CAMPUS ACTIVITIES IS APPRECIATED.
SEEING AND OBVIOUSLY INCREDIBLE PROGRESS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CONTINUE TO MAKE SIGNIFICANT STEPS AND THE GOAL THAT WE HAVE TO BE FULLY EMBEDDED WITHIN OUR CAMPUS COMMUNITY.
I HAD A QUESTION ABOUT YOU MENTIONED THE CADETS THAT HAVE FOUR STUDENTS.
I WAS JUST CURIOUS, WHAT WERE THE OTHER HALF? BECAUSE YOU MENTIONED SOME OF THEM HAVE ALREADY GRADUATED AND GONE ON.
WE DON'T HAVE A REQUIREMENT THAT THEY HAVE TO BE STUDENTS.
IT'S BETTER FOR OUR STUDENTS AND IT BRINGS US CONNECTION.
A COUPLE OF THEM ARE NOW GOING TO CAL STATE, LONG BEACH.
ONE ONE'S GOING TO UCLA, AND I DON'T KNOW WHY HE'S DRIVING BACK AND FORTH.
I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG IT'LL LAST.
SO THEY'RE PAID? YES, THEY ARE PAID. OKAY.
YES, CADETS ARE PAID. IT'S A PAID POSITION.
[01:15:02]
IT'S A SHORT TERM HOURLY.IT'S A SHORT TERM HOURLY POSITION.
SO THEY ARE PAID BECAUSE THEY WORK HARD? YEAH, THEY'RE THEY'RE OUT HERE.
THEY SET UP ALL THOSE BARRICADES.
THEY'RE THEY'RE BUSY AND THEY DO A GREAT JOB AT IT.
SO WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF THE CADETS THAT WE HAVE.
THEY'RE DOING AMAZING. THEY'RE NOT ALL DOING ALL WANT TO BE POLICE OFFICERS.
SO IT'S IT'S A GREAT WIN WIN FOR US AND FOR THEM.
THE OTHER THING I JUST WANTED TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.
EVERY TIME YOU COME, YOU'RE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR.
I REALLY FEEL LUCKY TO HAVE YOU HERE AND YOU'RE MAKING A DIFFERENCE ON CAMPUS.
DOING IT AGAIN. WELL, THANK YOU.
THANK YOU. IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT POLICE.
WE WANT TO BE HERE AND READY TO PROTECT US IF WE NEED TO BE PROTECTED.
THEY ALL CARRY NARCAN IN CASE OF.
OF FENTANYL OR OPIOID OVERDOSE.
IT STILL TAKES THEM FOREVER TO GET OVER HERE.
THEY ALSO GO TO ACTIVE SHOOTER TRAINING AND THAT WORST CASE DISASTER.
AND THEY'VE ALL BEEN THROUGH EXTENSIVE TRAINING.
BUT AT THE SAME TIME, I WANT THEM AT HOME HERE AND KNOW THIS IS THEIR FAMILY AND REALLY BE ONE ON ONE AND HAVE THOSE THOSE CONNECTIONS AND THOSE BUILDING BONDS WITH OUR STUDENTS SO THAT TOGETHER WE CAN JUST TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER AND REALLY AND SUCCEED.
THAT'S WHAT WE'RE HERE FOR. IT'S FOR OUR STUDENTS TO HELP THEM.
DO WE HAVE ANY COMPARATIVE NUMBERS AS TO OTHER COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND WHAT THEIR CRIME STATISTICS LOOK LIKE? BECAUSE THESE ARE WE CAN GET THOSE.
NOBODY HAS DONE A LOT OF STATS BECAUSE OF COVID.
WE'RE ALL AT THAT KIND OF AMONG THE COMMUNITY COLLEGES.
THIS IS REALLY THE COMPLETION OF THE FIRST YEAR BACK COMPARING TO LAST YEAR OR THE YEAR BEFORE.
THEY WERE MOSTLY CLOSED BUILDINGS.
SO AT THE END OF THIS YEAR, YES, I CAN START GATHERING THOSE FROM BOTH RIO HONDO, EL CAMINO, LONG BEACH CITY, THEY'VE BEEN CALLING US, ASKING THINGS SO WE CAN GET IT FROM THEM AND I CAN DEFINITELY GET LCDS, CRIME STATS BECAUSE THESE ARE THESE ARE CERTAINLY GREAT RECRUITING TOOLS TO SHOW THAT THEY ARE.
THIS IS THEY ARE THIS IS A FROM ACROSS THE BOARD FROM THE FACULTY THAT YOU HEARD BEFORE US.
THERE'S GREAT REASONS TO BE HERE FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENTS TO AFRICAN AMERICAN AFRICAN STUDIES TO SAY THERE'S A LOT OF REASONS TO COME TO CERRITOS YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. ACROSS THE BOARD, THIS IS A GREAT PLACE TO BE AND TO START YOUR YOUR HIGHER EDUCATION.
BUT I'LL BE GETTING NOTES IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS.
WE'LL BE ABLE TO START GETTING THAT FROM OTHER COLLEGES.
YEAH. ANY MORE QUESTIONS? OH, OKAY. THANK YOU. OH, GOOD QUESTION RIGHT THERE.
OH, COMMENT. I'VE BEEN. I'VE BEEN FIGHTING.
ZURICH. I CAN TELL OUR EYES MET ABOUT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS.
HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT ALLIGATORS? NO. OKAY. I'M KIDDING.
I DO HAVE A VERY GOOD FRIEND WHO IS THE CHIEF OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA, AND THEY ARE THE GATOR.
I'LL SEE WHAT THEY DO OVER THERE.
AND MAYBE THEY HAVE SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR US.
THANK YOU. OH, CHIEF, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR KEEPING THE COLLEGE SAFE.
YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY WELCOME. YEAH.
[2.05 Institutional Presentation: Data Snippet from the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Research, Planning, and Grants]
SO. SO NEXT INFORMATION, INSTITUTIONAL PRESENTATION DATA SNIPPET FROM THE OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS RESEARCH, PLANNING AND GRANT IS BY DEAN AMBER ROCK.AND YOU'RE GOING TO BRING AN EXCITING NEWS, RIGHT? I AM. I'M EXCITED TO SHARE THIS INFORMATION TONIGHT.
[01:20:03]
SO TONIGHT I'M GOING TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL SOME FACTORS THAT LEAD TO TWO YEAR COMPLETION.SO THIS RESEARCH REALLY CAME FROM A PRESENTATION I SAW AT THE RESEARCH AND PLANNING GROUP LAST YEAR, AND THEY REVISED THE RESEARCH THIS LAST APRIL.
SO WHAT WE INCLUDED IN THE RESEARCH WAS AROUND DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION.
SO GENDER, AGE, RACE, ETHNICITY, EVERYTHING IS LISTED THERE WITH REGARDS TO INTERVENTIONS.
WHAT SUPPORT SERVICES ARE HELPING STUDENTS COMPLETE IN TWO YEARS? AND THEN ACADEMIC ACADEMIC BEHAVIOR.
SO STUDENTS WHO COMPLETED TRANSFER LEVEL MATH IN THEIR FIRST YEAR, STUDENTS WHO COMPLETED TRANSFER LEVEL ENGLISH IN THEIR FIRST YEAR AVERAGE ATTEMPTED UNIT LOAD WITHIN THEIR FOUR PRIMARY SEMESTERS.
SO FALL AND SPRING AND THEN SUCCESSFUL COMPLETED UNITS IN THE FIRST SEMESTER.
SO FOR EXAMPLE, COMPLETING A COMPREHENSIVE PLAN, COMPLETING COMPLETING ANY KIND OF STUDENT EDUCATIONAL PLAN, COMPLETING ORIENTATION, RECEIVING FINANCIAL AID AND RECEIVING EOP SERVICES.
SO THE TOP THREE THINGS THAT PREDICTED TWO YEAR COMPLETION.
THE STRONGEST PREDICTOR WAS COMPLETION OF TRANSFER LEVEL MATH WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR.
SO WE ALREADY KNOW THIS INFORMATION.
SAME WITH COMPLETION OF TRANSFER LEVEL ENGLISH.
SO STUDENTS ARE ONE AND ONE HALF TIMES MORE LIKELY TO GRADUATE WITHIN TWO YEARS IF THEY GET THEIR COMPREHENSIVE PLAN WITHIN THAT FIRST YEAR OF STARTING AT CERRITOS COLLEGE.
I WAS WONDERING, DR. BREMER, WE HAVE NOT SEEN HOW THE PLAN HAS EVOLVED LATELY.
I BELIEVE, LIKE WHEN WE WHEN I FIRST GOT ON THE BOARD, IT WAS STILL KIND OF NEW.
THERE WEREN'T A LOT OF COUNSELORS WHO WERE WHO HAD REALLY KIND OF IMPLEMENTED IT.
SO I WOULD LOVE TO KIND OF SEE LIKE WHAT A COMPREHENSIVE PLAN LOOKS NOW AT THIS POINT.
SO MAYBE IN A COUPLE OF MONTHS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE.
YEAH, WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. YEAH, WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE OR KNOW OUR STUDENT LIKE WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? I MEAN LIKE WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FROM AS A STUDENT, WHAT AM I GOING TO GET? HOW DOES IT LOOK? HOW DOES THAT GUIDE ME INTO MY CAREER? LIKE, WHAT'S JUST TRYING TO GET A BETTER SENSE OF WHAT IT IS? I RECOMMEND WAITING TILL THE SPRING.
WE HAVE A BRAND NEW TOOL THAT WE'RE GOING TO PICK IN THE FALL.
YEAH, I THINK THAT'D BE A GOOD DEMONSTRATION JUST BECAUSE IT'S BECAUSE, AGAIN, I WAS TELLING DR.
FARRELL, LIKE, NONE OF THIS. NO OFFENSE.
AMBER IS NEW. WE'VE BEEN HEARING THIS FOR YEARS, RIGHT? I MEAN, LIKE AND AGAIN, LIKE, THESE ARE ALL WE KNOW THAT THESE WORK.
SO WE JUST HAVE TO FIGURE OUT HOW WE IMPLEMENT THIS EVERYWHERE, RIGHT? SO IT WOULD BE NICE TO KIND OF SEE, I UNDERSTAND, NUMBER ONE AND NUMBER TWO, VERY WELL NOW AT THIS POINT.
BUT I DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT A COMPREHENSIVE STUDENT PLAN REALLY MEANS.
I'M NOT SURE IF YOU CUT THE NUMBERS OR THE DATA WAS PROCESSED.
NEARLY 87,000 STUDENTS FROM 2005 TO NOW.
SO IT'S A PRETTY ROBUST ANALYSIS AND ESSENTIALLY CONTINUES TO TELL US ENGLISH AND MATH AND A COMPREHENSIVE ED PLAN.
BIGGER INDICATORS FOR GRADUATION ON TIME.
EITHER LYNN OR ROBIN MEANS YOU'RE PLANNING OUT THE ENTIRE ACADEMIC PROGRESSION OF THE STUDENT VERSUS THE ABBREVIATED ABBREVIATED, WHICH IS ESSENTIALLY CLASSES FOR THE SEMESTER.
AND LAST I CHECKED, THE NUMBERS.
PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, ROBIN.
WE HAVE A HIGH COMPLIANCE ON ABBREVIATED, LOW AND COMPREHENSIVE.
SO OBVIOUSLY THE DATA IS IS PRETTY CLEAR, PARTICULARLY AS YOU COMBINE ALL THE FACTORS TOGETHER.
[01:25:03]
SO SO OBVIOUSLY WE NEED TO CONTINUE TO ALIGN OUR EFFORTS TO THOSE FACTORS.AND WHAT WE HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS FOR A WHILE, I THINK SEEING THE ACTUAL METRICS OVER NEARLY A 20 YEAR PERIOD WITH THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS PROVIDES VALIDATION TO WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DOING, SAYING AN ADDITIONAL IMPETUS FOR US TO DOUBLE DOWN IN OUR EFFORTS TO CONTINUE TO DO THIS WORK.
SO. THANK YOU. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR LISTENING TO US.
YOU TAKE IT INTO CONSIDERATION.
YES. ARE WE GOING TO EXPLAIN WHAT A REGRESSION IS? NOT TONIGHT. OKAY.
THANK YOU. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? THANK YOU. DISCREPANCIES ON ETHNIC GROUPS.
YEAH. SO I THINK THE NEXT STEP FOR US IS TO LOOK AT THE CROSS SECTIONAL DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION.
SO IN PARTICULAR GENDER AND RACE ETHNICITY.
RIGHT NOW WE JUST CONTROLLED FOR GENDER ALONE, RACE, ETHNICITY.
BUT REALLY LOOKING AT THAT DATA ACROSS SECTIONAL EYES IS KIND OF THE NEXT STEPS.
AND BUILDING OUT ADDITIONAL VARIABLES TO GO INTO THE MODEL TO BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT INTERVENTIONS OR ACADEMIC BEHAVIOR STUDENTS ARE DOING, WHERE WE CAN EXPAND AT A LARGER SCALE WIDE FOR ALL STUDENTS OVER THE COURSE OF THE LAST 20 YEARS THAT YOU I BELIEVE LET ME JUST DOUBLE CHECK. I THINK IT WAS 2015.
SO 89, ALMOST 90,000 STUDENTS WERE INCLUDED.
BUT REGARDLESS, IN THOSE YEARS THAT YOU LOOKED AT, WAS THERE ANY STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES IN THE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE WHO COMPLETED COMPLETION OF MATH AND ENGLISH AND ALL OF THOSE? LIKE WAS IT A INCREASE FROM 2015 TO THE PRESENT FOR HOW MUCH IN EFFECT EITHER OF THESE FACTORS HAD? YEAH, THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION.
BUT WE JUST LOOKED AS A WHOLE OVER THE LAST, YOU KNOW, SINCE 2015 TO PRESENT.
BUT WE CAN LOOK AT THAT FOR SURE.
YEAH, MAYBE THIS IS JUST WISHFUL THINKING, BUT SO IF THE STUDENT TAKES MATH 1.7 TIMES MORE LIKELY, RIGHT.
BUT IF THE STUDENT DOES ALL THOSE.
ARE WE IS THERE A IS THERE A MULTIPLIER BASED ON THE AGGREGATE OF THE TREATMENT OR IS JUST THE ONE AND A HALF OR SO BY TAKING? NO. YEAH. SO WE LOOKED AT STUDENTS WHO COMPLETE AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE OR A TWO YEAR ADT ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE VERSUS THOSE WHO DID NOT.
YEAH, THEY THESE WERE THE FACTORS THAT INDICATED THAT THEY WERE MORE LIKELY TO COMPLETE.
I GUESS WHAT I'M SAYING IS IF YOU DO ALL THREE, ARE WE TALKING ABOUT A FOUR AND A HALF TIMES GREATER IMPACT? WE WOULD HAVE TO DO ADDITIONAL ANALYSIS TO.
I THINK I MEAN, IF I COULD JUST ADD, YOU KNOW, GOING BACK TO THE FIRST BULLET, THE COMPLETION OF TRANSFER LEVEL MATH, I KNOW WE TALKED ABOUT IT TOO, LIKE WE'RE ELIMINATING THOSE LAST FEW MATH CLASSES, RIGHT, THAT WE HAD THAT WERE BELOW REMEDIAL ED BY FALL.
RIGHT. SO I THINK, YOU KNOW, OBVIOUSLY THAT WILL HAVE AN IMPACT, TOO.
BUT THEY'RE IN THIS LAW SCHOLARSHIP REVIEW.
AND AGAIN, THESE ARE WOMEN WHO WHO HAVE DECIDED THEY WANT TO BE STEM MAJORS.
THERE ARE STILL SO MANY OF THEM WHO DO NOT TAKE MATH THE FIRST TIME.
AND I THINK IT'S JUST BECAUSE THEY'RE SCARED.
I MEAN, LIKE THEY JUST I DON'T KNOW.
SO, AGAIN, I DON'T KNOW WHAT MORE SUPPORT WE CAN DO, YOU KNOW? BUT AGAIN, I MEAN, I'D BE OPEN TO ANY OTHER IDEAS ON THAT BECAUSE, AGAIN, YOU KNOW, IF THESE WOMEN WANT TO BECOME STEM MAJORS AND THEY'RE NOT ON THE PATH TO TO ADVANCE THROUGH A MATH SEQUENCE VERY QUICKLY, I MEAN, YOU SEE IT IN THE NUMBER OF UNITS THAT THEY'RE ACCUMULATING, YOU KNOW, 80 UNITS, 112 UNITS.
AND AND, YOU KNOW, I JUST I JUST SEE IT.
I JUST KNOW LIKE HOW LONG THEIR PATH IS GOING TO BE.
SO, AGAIN, SO ANYTHING, YOU KNOW, I'M STILL INTERESTED IN GETTING FEEDBACK, YOU KNOW, FROM OUR FACULTY MEMBERS ON WHAT WORKS, WHAT DOESN'T WORK, BECAUSE I KNOW WE'RE MAKING A LOT OF IMPROVEMENTS. SO I WOULD DEFINITELY LIKE TO BE HEAR MORE ABOUT WHAT HAS BEEN WORKING.
[01:30:02]
SO THAT'S A GREAT POINT.SO MY RESEARCH WAS ACTUALLY ON THE GENDER GAP IN STEM.
ANOTHER THING I LOOKED AT WAS FACULTY INTERACTIONS.
AND SO THAT IS A VERY POSITIVE PREDICTOR OF COMPLETION FOR WOMEN IN PARTICULAR.
ALL RIGHT. NEXT INSTITUTIONAL PRESENTATION WE'RE GOING TO RECOGNITION OF PROBABLY THE MOST POPULAR
[2.06 Institutional Presentation: Recognition of Hector Ledesma, Student Trustee]
TRUSTEE MEMBER.AND THIS IS OUR STUDENT, TRUSTEE HECTOR LEDESMA.
BECAUSE THIS ONE WILL BE BRIEF BECAUSE I WAS NOT GIVEN ANY SCRIPT.
IT HAS BEEN A REALLY FUN YEAR, SPENDING TIME WITH YOU, LEARNING ABOUT YOU, LEARNING ABOUT YOUR GOALS, AND OBVIOUSLY GETTING EXCITED ABOUT YOUR FUTURE.
THE MORE I HAVE INTERACTED WITH YOU, THE MORE I AM SURE THAT YOUR FUTURE IS VERY BRIGHT.
YOU WILL DO US VERY, VERY PROUD.
LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING YOUR STORIES ABOUT YOUR TIME AND HUMBLE AND ALSO LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU GRADUATE IN TWO YEARS FLAT.
AS YOU COMPLETE YOUR ACADEMIC PROGRAM, I HOPE THAT YOU STAY IN TOUCH AND I WILL OFFER MY SUPPORT, MY FRIENDSHIP AND ADVICE AS YOU PROGRESS THROUGH YOUR CAREER AND OBVIOUSLY YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE.
SO THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WORK THAT YOU HAVE DONE WITH US OVER THE LAST YEAR.
THE GOOD LAUGHS AND THE MEMORIES.
SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST ACTOR.
AND NOW YOU CAN GET UP AND TAKE A PICTURE AND TAKE THE CERTIFICATE, TALK A LITTLE BIT.
ANYTIME. UM, WELL, GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE.
AS STUDENT TRUSTEE, I HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO WITNESS A LOT OF GREAT THINGS HERE IN THE BOARD ROOM, SOME THINGS THAT I WOULD HAVE NEVER THOUGHT HAPPENED HERE, ESPECIALLY SECURING THE POSITION AS STUDENT TRUSTEE.
I HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS GOING ON, WHAT THE BOARD WAS, WHAT WE DID HERE.
AND DESPITE THE DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS AND DECISIONS, DISCUSSIONS THAT WE'VE HAD HERE, I THINK ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS HERE THAT I'VE SEEN IS EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH AND REALLY RECOGNIZING THE HARD WORK THAT OUR STAFF, FACULTY, EMPLOYEES AND EVERYONE HERE PUTS IN.
AND ALTHOUGH I DO APPRECIATE THE RECOGNITION AND THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU MORE IMPORTANTLY FOR THE SUPPORT AND THE INVESTMENT THAT CERRITOS COLLEGE AND EVERYONE HAS PUT INTO ME.
AND I JUST I'M AT A LOSS FOR WORDS.
I AM JUST EXTREMELY GRATEFUL FOR THAT.
WHAT IS THIS? THIS? YEAH. YEAH. GOODNESS GRACIOUS.
[01:35:07]
OH, IT'S.IT'S ALL DIAMOND, RIGHT? CLEAR CUT.
I'M TO DO ONE WITH THE TYPEKIT.
OH, YEAH. LET'S DO IT. SO NOW WE EVEN HAVE THE SAME SHOES NOW.
SO WHEN IN DOUBT, ALWAYS, ALWAYS WINGTIP.
DO WE HAVE IT UP THERE? SHE'S WITNESS KIDS WEARING BRANDS, I THINK.
THE OTHER ONE, THE BLACK DRESS SHOES.
I KNOW YOU'RE SMALL GROUP OVER HERE.
YOU WANT ME TO MOVE THE CHAIR ALL THE WAY TO THE BACK? NICE TRY. ALL RIGHT.
I'M USED TO IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
HECTOR. WHERE ARE YOU GOING? TO SCHOOL.
WHERE ARE YOU? WHAT ARE YOUR PARENTS? THOSE OF US, I HAVE COMMITTED TO CAL POLY HUMBOLDT TO PURSUE ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING.
AND ALTHOUGH I DID GET ACCEPTED TO OTHER SCHOOLS AS WELL, I JUST FELT THAT IT WAS NATURAL.
FOR ME TO CHOOSE A HUMBLE, AS THEY SAY, WHERE THE REDWOODS MEET THE OCEAN.
I WOULD BE OUT THERE SO YOU GUYS KNOW WHERE TO FIND ME.
[3. Consent Items]
SO LET'S MOVE ON TO THE CONSENT ITEMS. ANY TRUSTEE. WANT TO PULL ANY ITEM.OKAY. WHICH ITEM? YEAH. EARLY.
OKAY. THREE. RIGHT. THREE ITEMS. AND WITH THAT, I'LL MOVE THE CONSENT, THE REMAINING ITEMS ON THE CONSENT CALENDAR.
SO IN ALL OF THESE FAVOR, I OKAY, I KNOW THERE'S NO OBJECTION.
SO THE MOTION CARRY AND SO CAN WE DISCUSS 3.01 NOW?
[3.01 Faculty Stipends for Center for Teaching Excellence Summer Institute in Summer 2023]
YES, I WAS FASCINATED BY THIS ITEM, SO I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE SOMEONE JUST GIVE A LITTLE BIT A BRIEF UPDATE AND WE'D LOVE TO SEE IF WHO'S EVER DOING THE TRAINING CAN DO A VERY SMALL, CONDENSED VERSION FOR A BOARD REQUEST.BUT I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR MORE ABOUT THE TRAINING TOO.
SO I WILL GIVE US A LITTLE BIT OF THE BACKGROUND AND WE'LL WE'LL WE'LL THEN TALK TO THE FACULTY LEADERS.
YES, I CAN GIVE A ONE MINUTE OVERVIEW AND THEN AFTER THIS TRAINING, LIN CAN GIVE YOU THE MORE DETAILED EXPERIENTIAL DESCRIPTION OF THAT SUMMER ACTUALLY INSTITUTE THAT REALLY IS A SUMMER INSTITUTE ABOUT THE ANTIRACIST EDUCATOR AND IT STARTED BACK IN 2017 REALLY IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR FACULTY TO WORK TOGETHER, TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN MATERIALS, TO REFLECT AND ALSO DEVELOP MATERIALS FOR THEIR COURSES AND FOR THEIR INTERACTIONS WITH OUR STUDENTS.
WITH A GOAL IN MIND IS TO CLOSE EQUITY GAPS REGARDLESS OF STUDENTS BACKGROUND.
AND THE BEAUTY OF THIS INSTITUTE IS WE DO NOT ASK ANY EXTERNAL EXPERTS, OUR OWN FACULTY, OUR EXPERTS, WE HAVE OUR OWN FACULTY AS FACILITATORS LEADING THOSE DISCUSSIONS AND DIALOGS.
AND AND ALSO OUR FACULTY PARTICIPANTS HAVE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK ONE ON ONE WITH OUR FACILITATORS, AND THEY DEVELOP MATERIALS THAT THEY SHARE AND THEY SEEK FEEDBACK FROM OUR FACILITATORS TO LOOK AT OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENTS.
[01:40:04]
THIS SUMMER IS THE FIRST TIME AFTER 2000 2020, WE'RE GETTING BACK TO ACTUALLY IN PERSON AND GETTING TO A WEEK LONG PROCESS.IT TAKES THAT KIND OF COMMITMENT.
THE EMERGING EMERGING EXPERIENCE FOR OUR FACULTY TO TO TO GET INTO AND I DON'T KNOW IF READING ALREADY HAS A PURVIEW OF THAT OR. DENNIS, HAVE YOU BEEN THERE? YES. EVERY CLASSROOM? YES. IT WAS DEVELOPED BY LYDIA ALVAREZ AND.
MHM. AND I BELIEVE SOME DELIVERABLES ARE UPDATING.
IN SOME ACTUALLY MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVE IN THE IN THE TEACHING MATERIALS, BASICALLY YOU CAN TEACH ACTUALLY THERE ARE LIKE BIOLOGISTS WHO ARE WHITE, BUT ALSO THERE ARE BIOLOGISTS WHO ARE BROWN AND YELLOW.
AND JUST GIVE YOU ONE PERSPECTIVE.
[3.02 Faculty Stipends for Zero Textbook Costs Program]
ALL RIGHT. 3.02.I REMEMBER. NOW WE ARE MAKING PROGRESS ON. OH, SORRY.
ARE WE MAKING PROGRESS ON NOTING THOSE COURSES WITHIN SCHEDULE PLUS THAT THOSE ARE ZERO TEXTBOOK COSTS TO, AGAIN, AS STUDENTS MAKE THEIR DECISIONS? YEAH. YEAH. WE'LL BE ACTUALLY MAKING NOTATIONS ABOUT ZERO TEXTBOOK COSTS ACTUALLY IN THE COURSE SCHEDULE, OF COURSE.
AND ALSO WITH US GETTING ONTO THE COAI PLATFORM, BECOMING A TEACHING COLLEGE STARTING JUNE 20TH, 23, WHICH NEXT MONTH WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT JUNE 20TH, 23 NEXT MONTH.
SO YEAH, BEGINNING NEXT MONTH THAT YOU WILL BE A TEACHING COLLEGE WITHIN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA AND WITHIN THE TEACHING COLLEGE, THERE ARE SOME NOTATIONS THAT WILL ENHANCE THE VISIBILITY OF OUR COURSES.
AND HAVING ZERO TEXTBOOK COST IS ONE OF THE BADGES THAT CAN GET US TO BE MORE VISIBLE.
AND THE OTHER THINGS THAT TALK ABOUT POKER, THE PEER REVIEW THAT YOUR COURSE CONTENT POKER WILL GET US, THERE ARE A NUMBER OF BADGE THAT CAN GET US TO, OF COURSE, TO BE MORE VISIBLE WHEN WE ASK.
THE MORE VISIBLE BASICALLY IS TO BRING OUR COSTS TO ON TOP OF THE LIST.
WE DON'T NEED TO PAY ANYONE, BUT WE DO NEED TO FOCUS ON ZERO TEXTBOOK COSTS, WHICH IS PROVEN BENEFICIAL FOR OUR STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY WITH COLLEGE PROMISE, WITH THE ZERO ACTUAL TUITION AND FEES FOR ALL STUDENTS, THE NEXT HIGHEST COST REALLY TALKING ABOUT FINANCIAL BARRIER OUTSIDE OF FOOD AND HOUSING, THOSE KIND OF THINGS IS TEXTBOOK COSTS. A TEXTBOOK COST YOU $300 AND FOR CALCULUS, FOR SURE.
FOR BIOLOGY FOR SURE THAT WHAT I'M MOST FAMILIAR WITH AND EVEN AMERICAN HISTORY, I'VE GOT A BOOK FOR MY DAUGHTER, FOR AMERICAN HISTORY, ONE THAT I CAN DO. ONE NATION, ONE PEOPLE.
IT'S QUITE A LOT OF MONEY FOR JUST ONE NATION, ONE PEOPLE.
I MEAN, OBVIOUSLY, WE HAVE 11 FACULTY MEMBERS.
SO AGAIN, JUST PLEASE SHARE OUR THANKS, OUR GRATITUDE, DENNIS AND LYNN, AGAIN, FOR DOING THIS, BECAUSE I DO THINK, AGAIN, WE'VE BEEN VERY FOCUSED ON REMOVING BARRIERS. AND LIKE YOU SAID, DR.
ZELLE, THIS IS A BIG BARRIER FOR A LOT OF STUDENTS.
AND I THINK WE ALL KNOW THAT PEOPLE NEED THEIR TEXTBOOKS TO BE SUCCESSFUL, TOO.
SO SO JUST REALLY EXCITED THAT THESE FACULTY MEMBERS ARE LEADING ON THIS.
AND IF WE GET MORE INTO THAT OR FACULTY GOT MORE EXCITED, WE CAN FURTHER APPLY FOR UP TO $200,000 TO DEVELOP PROGRAMS FOR THE ENTIRE PROGRAM WITH TEXTBOOKS WITH NO COST FOR STUDENTS.
AND IF WE GET THERE, THERE'S ADDITIONAL FUNDING FROM THE STATE.
TO GIVE US 20,000 IS JUST A STARTING POINT.
YEAH, THERE'S A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES IN THIS.
AND THIS IS ONE OF THE THINGS THERE'S SOME FOUNDATION MONEY INVOLVED IN THIS, TOO.
AND AGAIN, I THINK IT'S JUST IT'S FURTHER ELEVATED TO AND IT'S ALSO TIED INTO IS THIS ONE TIED INTO THAT COMMON CORE? COMMON CORE. COMMON CORE.
COMMON CORE IS DIFFERENT. SO DIFFERENT, SO MANY DIFFERENT EFFORTS AT THE STATE LEVEL.
[01:45:03]
BUT BUT YEAH, I MEAN, I JUST REMEMBER THAT THERE WAS A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR FOR COLLEGES THAT REALLY WANTED TO KEEP ON PURSUING THIS.SO I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO DO HERE AT THE COLLEGE.
SO WE DEFINITELY WANT TO GET ON BOARD.
ACTUALLY, WE'RE A LITTLE BIT BEHIND FROM THOSE PERSPECTIVE.
WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON THAT. THANK YOU.
THANK YOU, DR.. BEFORE HE LEAVES THE.
I WANTED TO SAY HERE WITH EVERYBODY HERE, I GOT A CHANCE TO WORK WITH YOU QUITE A BIT.
IT'S BACK TO THE SENATE PRESIDENT, OBVIOUSLY IN YOUR POSITION.
AND I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYBODY KNEW THAT FROM THE FACULTY POINT OF VIEW, ALL THE INTERACTIONS THAT I'VE HAD WORKING WITH YOU WAS A PLEASURE AND YOU DID AN AMAZING JOB STEPPING IN WHEN ASKED BY THE DISTRICT.
AND I JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW THAT.
ANYONE. SECOND. SECOND. OKAY, WELL, FOR THOSE IN FAVOR.
[3.12 Ratification of Amendment No. 6 to the Agreement for Program and Construction Management Services with Tilden-Coil Constructors, Inc.]
VERY BAD. YES.PHILIPPE, IF YOU COULD JUST KIND OF GIVE US A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF WHERE WE'RE AT.
SO THIS CONTRACT, THIS AMENDMENT IN FRONT OF YOU IS JUST SO TO GIVE YOU SOME BACK HISTORY ON THIS.
SO OUR ACTUAL CONTRACT WITH TILDEN COIL EXPIRED AS OF DECEMBER OF 2022.
SO WE'VE BEEN ON A MONTH TO MONTH AGREEMENT WITH THEM.
THIS AMENDMENT JUST ALLOWS US TO CONTINUE THAT MONTH TO MONTH UNTIL WE GO THROUGH THE RFP PROCESS TO FINALIZE A NEW CONTRACT ON THAT.
SO THAT PROCESS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS.
WE'RE AT THE CONCLUSION OF THAT AGREEMENT OR THAT PROCESS.
WE'RE HOPEFUL TO BRING A RECOMMENDATION TO THE BOARD EITHER NEXT MONTH OR EARLY JULY ON THAT.
THIS IS JUST TO CONTINUE THAT BRIDGE BETWEEN SERVICES TO GET US UNTIL WE FINALIZE A NEW CONTRACT APPROVED BY THE BOARD, BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY WITH THE NEW BOND MEASURE, WE DID NOT WANT TO EXTEND A LONG TERM CONTRACT BECAUSE WE WANTED TO GO THROUGH THIS PROCESS FIRST.
AND SO THIS THIS AGAIN, THIS IS A MONTH, A MONTH AND WILL EXPIRE ONCE A NEW CONTRACT IS BROUGHT TO THE BOARD FOR APPROVAL ON THAT. SO SO THE ONLY THING I DIDN'T SEE ON THIS, I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THE FISCAL IMPACT WAS.
IT JUST SAYS THAT FUNDING IS AN AMENDMENT FOR THE CONTRACT AMENDMENT.
IT WILL BE ALLOCATED FROM THE BOND. BUT I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE DOLLAR AMOUNTS WERE.
IT'S IN THAT SECOND PARAGRAPH.
IT'S THE ACTUAL FEES STILL STAY THE SAME AT 67.
SO THAT THAT IS THE BASE ON THAT.
THAT WAS THE LAST TIME IT WAS AMENDED AND THAT WILL IS THE STILL THE CURRENT FEE THAT WE'RE WE'RE RECOMMENDING TO CONTINUE UNTIL WE GET A FINALIZED NEW AGREEMENT. SO WE'RE IN THE PROCESS OF CONDUCTING INTERVIEWS AND THEN COMMITTEE WILL THEN PROVIDE A RECOMMENDATION ON THAT.
THEN WE'LL BEGIN NEGOTIATIONS ON THAT.
SO WE'RE LOOKING TO TRY TO GET THAT WRAPPED UP AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.
WE'RE ANTICIPATING EITHER LATE JUNE, THE JUNE MEETING OR THE FIRST MEETING IN JULY AND SO ON THAT.
SO THAT'S BEEN A LONG PROCESS ON ON TRYING TO GET RECRUITING FIRMS OUT THERE.
AND IT'S JUST THERE'S A LOT OF WORK OUT THERE ON THAT.
AND SO BUT BUT THE PROCESS IS ALMOST COMPLETE ON THAT.
SO WE'RE LOOKING EITHER LATE JUNE OR EARLY JULY FOR A RECOMMENDATION.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE PRESENTATION.
ALL RIGHT. FOR ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, SAY AYE.
[4.01 College Coordinating Committee Minutes: April 3, 2023 and April 17, 2023]
ALL RIGHT. SO LET'S MOVE ON TO INFORMATION ITEM 4.01.[01:50:07]
WE WILL RECEIVE AND FILE.RIGHT. SO THIS ONE IS CALLED COORDINATING COMMITTEE MINUTES.
AND NEXT ONE IS ALSO INFORMATION ITEM.
[4.02 Associated Students Cerritos College (ASCC) Financial Report for the Period Ending March 31, 2023]
SO RECEIVE AND FILE.[4.03 Compressed Calendar Ad Hoc Committee Presentation]
THE 4.03 IS COMPRESSED CALENDAR AD HOC COMMITTEE PRESENTATION ALSO RECEIVE AND FILE.NO, WE WE HAVE A PRESENTATION.
SO WE DO HAVE A PRESENTATION, I THINK, HERE.
IF YOU WANT TO RESTORE YOURSELF, IF YOU WANT TO DO THAT AS WELL.
AND WE HAVE A SPECIAL TASK FORCE FORMED BASED ON AN MOU BETWEEN THE CCF AND OUR DISTRICT AND BASED ON THE MOU, WE'VE GOT A WONDERFUL GROUP OF, AS YOU CAN SEE, MANAGERS, FACULTY CLASSIFIED, AND OUR GREAT STUDENT TRUSTEE ALSO IS ON BOARD FOR THAT CONVERSATION.
BUT BEFORE I GO INTO THE TOPIC, I DO WANT TO CLARIFY IT A BIT.
IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM, WE HAVE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF CALENDAR.
ONE IS THE TRADITIONAL CALENDAR THAT WE SEE TRADITIONAL.
IT'S A FULL 18 WEEK SEMESTER, FALL, SEMESTER AND SPRING SEMESTER AND TRADITIONAL.
EVERYBODY WAS SO EXCITED ABOUT STARTING.
AT THAT TIME, SOME DISTRICTS BEGAN TO EXPLORE COMPRESSED CALENDAR AND COMPLEX CALENDAR, WHICH REALLY MEANS THAT ANYTHING THAT'S SHORTER THAN 18 WEEKS, THE DEEPEST COMPRESSION YOU CAN GET TO, IS 16 WEEKS, BECAUSE BY 1005, THE INSTRUCTION HAS TO BE AT LEAST 16 WEEKS OR AT MOST 18 WEEKS.
SO THAT'S WHY IT'S COMPRESSED AT THE DEEPEST COMPRESSION IS 16 WEEKS.
IT'S CALLED FLEX CALENDAR, WHICH MEANS BETWEEN 16 AND 18 WEEKS, SOME OF THOSE DAYS BECOME FLEX DAYS.
SOME THINGS THAT WE'RE EXPLORING ACTUALLY AT THIS DISTRICT ARE ALSO MOVING FORWARD.
SO JUST TO GIVE YOU PERSPECTIVE SO THAT YOU DON'T CONFUSE.
SO TALKING ABOUT FLEX AND THE DISCUSSION, OF COURSE, THE FIRST PIECE, WE DEFINITELY LOOKING AT, IF WE DO ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY, WOULD THAT IMPACT STUDENT LEARNING AND STUDENT SUCCESS? AND FROM ALL THE DATA WE'VE BEEN LOOKING AT CURRENTLY IN OUR DISTRICT, WE NOT ONLY HAVE THE FULL 18 WEEK CLASSES OFFERED, WE HAVE A LOT OF SHORT TERM CLASSES, SHORT TERM CLASSES THAT BASICALLY ANYTHING THAT'S LESS THAN 18 WEEKS COULD BE 15, 12, NINE, SIX OR COULD BE 1 OR 2 WEEKS BECAUSE WE HAVE COUNSELING CLASSES, WHICH IS HALF A UNIT, WE CAN DO IT IN ONE WEEK.
SO WE HAVE VARIOUS LENGTHS OF CLASSES.
AND WHEN WE LOOK AT STUDENT SUCCESS RATES, THEY'RE ALL COMPARABLE.
AND CURRENTLY ABOUT 50% OF ALL CLASSES ARE OFFERED AT SHORT TERM, BUT 50% IS 18 WEEKS.
50% IS ANYTHING SHORTER THAN 18 WEEKS.
WE DON'T RANDOMLY ACTUALLY JUST OFFER CLASSES AT DIFFERENT LENGTHS.
IT'S BY CHOICE OF FACULTY AND ALSO BASED ON STUDENT NEEDS.
SO THAT KIND OF PLAYS INTO THE FACT THAT WHEN WE SAY OUTCOMES, STUDENT SUCCESS RATES ARE COMPARABLE BECAUSE IF STUDENTS ARE NOT SUCCESSFUL, PROBABLY OUR FACULTY WOULDN'T DO THAT AND OUR STUDENTS WOULDN'T TAKE THOSE CLASSES EITHER.
IT IS OKAY THE CLASS SCHEDULING PROCESS.
AS I MENTIONED, WE ARE CURRENTLY WE OFFER SHORT TERM CLASSES ANYWAY, SO WHETHER WE OFFER 18 WEEK, 16 WEEK, NINE WEEK OR SIX WEEK CLASSES, IT REALLY DOES NOT HAVE ANY IMPACT HOW WE SCHEDULE CLASSES.
AND IF WE CAN MAKE THIS MOVE FORWARD.
[01:55:04]
IF A CLASS OFFERED 18 WEEKS COMPARED TO A CLASS OF 16 WEEKS, BASICALLY EVERY DAY, THE MEETING TIME WILL BE A BIT LONGER TO HAVE ENOUGH ADEQUATE CONTACT HOURS. SO WE LOOK AT SPACE USAGE.WOULD THAT IMPACT WILL OUR SPACE UTILIZATION? AND BECAUSE OF A NUMBER OF PERCENTAGE OF ONLINE CLASSES WE ARE OFFERING REALLY FOR LECTURE CLASSES, IT'S NOT THAT MUCH IMPACT.
WE DON'T HAVE UNLIMITED NUMBER OF LAB SPACE AND ALSO WE CANNOT OFFER NURSING BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, LAB CLASSES ONLINE, AT LEAST THE CURRENT TECHNOLOGY IS NOT AVAILABLE. WE HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT VIRTUAL REALITY OR THOSE KIND OF THINGS, BUT IT'S IN THE FUTURE.
AT CURRENTLY THERE IS NO AVAILABLE.
SO WE LOOK AT WHAT'S THE IMPACT OF LAB SPACE.
WHAT IT IS. IT HAS ITS OWN SPACE.
SO WHAT'S THE IMPACT OF THE LAB SPACE? AND THAT'S BEEN THERE'S BEEN STUDY THAT'S BEING CONDUCTED AT PHILIPPE.
VICE PRESIDENT PHILIPPE IS LEADING EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT PHILIPPE IS LEADING THAT STUDY.
SO WHEN WE TALK ABOUT CONVERSION FROM A TRADITIONAL 18 WEEK TO A COMPRESSED UP TO 16 WEEK SEMESTER, WHEN WE DO ANY CHANGE, THERE'S OF COURSE, A COST OF DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY.
SO WE'VE CONTRACTED CAMBRIDGE WEST TO DO A COST ANALYSIS AS WHAT'S THE COST FOR US TO HAVE THAT CONVERSION? AND BASED ON HIS ANALYSIS, THERE IS A ONE TIME COST IN ALL AREAS IT ACADEMIC AFFAIRS, BUSINESS SERVICES, HUMAN RESOURCES.
BUT REMEMBER, THE CONVERSION IS A ONE TIME DEAL.
IT'S I THINK IT'S LESS THAN $1 MILLION TO TO CONDUCT TO CONVERT.
IF WE USE THOSE FOUR EXTRA WEEKS TO BUILD A WINTER INTERSESSION RIGHT AFTER CHRISTMAS BREAK.
THERE WILL BE COSTS. THERE WILL BE COSTS FOR INSTRUCTORS TO TEACH THOSE CLASSES.
THE COST OF OPENING LIBRARY TUTORING CENTER AND ALSO ADMISSIONS RECORDS.
AND THEY NEED TO OPEN ANOTHER TERM OF REGISTRATION AND ACTUALLY FINANCIAL AID.
NOW, THERE'S ONGOING COST FOR THAT PIECE AND HOW MUCH THAT COSTS.
WE HAVE NOT FIGURED EXACTLY OUT ALL THE COSTS YET.
BUT JUST TO LOOK AT THE INSTRUCTOR SIDE, IT WILL TAKE US ABOUT $33 MILLION TO PAY OFF FACULTY TO GENERATE ABOUT 1000 FTES AND EACH FTES. WE GET THAT FUNDING FROM STATE OF ALMOST $5,000.
AND YEAH, AND SO IN THIS STUDY TOO, WE ALSO LOOKED AT IDENTIFYING ANY ADDITIONAL COSTS THAT MAY BE, AS DR.
SAL MENTIONED, OUR BIGGEST IMPACT IS GOING TO BE IN OUR LABS, RIGHT? AND SO AND SO WE LOOKED AT DIFFERENT SCENARIOS OF WHAT ADDITIONAL IF WE DID EXPAND IN LAB SPACES, WHAT THAT COULD LOOK LIKE.
SO, YOU KNOW, ONE WAY COULD OF CONVERTING, WE CAN ACTUALLY CONVERT.
WE LOOKED AT THE COST OF CONVERTING EXISTING INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSROOMS INTO LABS AND DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF LAB, WHETHER OR NOT IT'S A WET LAB OR A DRY LAB, COSTS COULD RANGE ANYWHERE BETWEEN 75,000 TO 400,000, DEPENDING ON, YOU KNOW, THE THE TYPE OF LAB WE PUT IN THERE.
IF WE DIDN'T IF WE DIDN'T WANT TO RENOVATE CURRENT CLASSROOMS, WE COULD ALSO LOOK AT TEMPORARY LAB SPACES SIMILAR TO OUR PORTABLE SWING SPACE THAT WE PUT OUT THERE FOR OUR HEALTH OK FOLKS ON THERE, WE PUT A NUMBER OF LABS FOR FOR THEIR PROGRAMS OUT THERE.
AND SO THOSE WOULD BE LIKE PORTABLE MODULARS THAT WE WOULD COME IN THERE, SIT DOWN AND THEN HAVE THOSE SET UP AND BE COMPLIANT WITH THE NEEDS OF THE CLASSROOM.
AND THEN OBVIOUSLY, IF WE'RE LOOKING TO ACTUALLY BUILD NEW BUILDINGS, SPECIFICALLY OF EXPANDING LABS ITSELF, YOU KNOW, WE ALSO PUT IN A COST OF OF A NEW BUILDING IN THERE OF ROUGHLY ABOUT $30 MILLION.
THIS ACTUALLY COMES FROM PART OF OUR FACILITIES MASTER PLAN BECAUSE WE DO PART OF THE MASTER PLAN DOES EXPAND THE STEAM ASPECT OF THE CAMPUS ON THE STUDEBAKER SIDE OF IT, WITH THE NEW BUILDING THAT IS MORE DEDICATED TO A LOT MORE LAB SPACES IN THAT.
AND SO THAT BUILDING IS IS WAS HAD A ROUGH ESTIMATE OF ABOUT $30 MILLION TO TO BUILD AND THEN DR.
[02:00:02]
ZELL ALSO MENTIONED IF WE WERE TO CHOOSE AN INNER WINTER SESSION ROUGHLY IT WOULD COST US AROUND $3 MILLION FOR THE INSTRUCTIONAL PIECE OF OF ADDITIONAL COSTS.BUT THAT ALSO ASSUMES THAT WOULD GENERATE ROUGHLY ABOUT 1000 FTES.
PHILIPPE. THE $3 MILLION IS AFTER SUBTRACTING THE THE 1000 FEES BEFORE SUBTRACTING BEFORE.
YEAH. SO THAT'S JUST THE ACTUAL COSTS ITSELF ON THAT.
ASSUMING FTES ON ON THAT IT'S HARD TO DEPENDING ON HOW THAT WOULD LOOK ON THE FUNDING FORMULA BECAUSE IT'S IN WINTER SESSION, THERE'S PROBABLY NOT GOING TO BE TOO MANY METRICS BEING MET DURING THAT TIME BECAUSE DURING THE INNER WINTER SESSION YOU'RE USUALLY YOU'RE NOT GOING TO HAVE ANY CERTIFICATES OR DEGREES OR GRADUATES.
SO WE CATEGORIZE THAT AS BASICALLY A NUMBER OF SUMMER, RIGHT? AND SO WHICH IS ROUGHLY JUST GOING TO BE FUNDING US FROM AN FTES STANDPOINT, NOT NECESSARILY THE OTHER METRICS, BUT AGAIN, IN A WINTER SESSION CAN CONTRIBUTE TO OUR OVERALL METRICS FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR.
ANY QUESTION. AND ALSO FOR THAT STUDY WE ALSO LOOKED AT DIFFERENT TYPES OF CANNING SAMPLES, CALENDARS FOR 16 AND 18 WEEKS, AND WE PLAYED OUT WITH OR WITHOUT WINTER SESSION WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE.
AND ONE THING WE HEARD FROM FACULTY AND FROM STUDENTS ALSO, IF THEY CONTINUE TO TEACH OR TAKE CLASSES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, IT'S QUITE A DAUNTING TASK BECAUSE CURRENTLY WE HAVE 18 WEEK SEMESTERS, WHICH ADDS UP TO SEMESTERS, 36 WEEKS, AND ALSO WE HAVE 12 WEEK SUMMER, WHICH ADD UP TO 48 WEEKS. AND ALSO WE HAVE SPRING BREAK.
EVERYBODY'S IN SESSION AND 52 WEEKS FOR THE YEAR AND MINUS CHRISTMAS BREAK.
YOU CAN TELL THERE'S NO BREAK FOR FACULTY AND STUDENTS.
SO THERE'S SOME CONCERN ABOUT THAT.
SO FROM THAT PERSPECTIVE, WE LOOK AT WHAT THE SHORTER SUMMER WOULD LOOK LIKE.
SO WE LOOK AT EIGHT WEEKS, SUMMER AND TEN WEEK SUMMER AS WELL AS OPTIONS FOR US TO LOOK AT.
OUR STUDENTS REALLY IN SACHSE WANT A LONGER SUMMER SESSION.
BUT OUR DISTRICT, THE ACADEMIC CALENDAR, BY THE WAY, IS IS DETERMINED BY THE STATE.
IF WE CHANGE THAT, WE NEED STATE APPROVAL BECAUSE IT'S IMPACTING OUR APPORTIONMENT FROM THE STATE.
BUT IN OUR DISTRICT, WHAT WE CAN DECIDE AS A BOARD ALSO WHAT YOU CAN DECIDE AS A BOARD US IS YOUR CALENDAR LIKE WHAT? FACULTY FULL TIME FACULTY, TEN MONTHS.
YOU NEED TO WORK 175 DAYS, 11 MONTHS.
FACULTY NEED TO WORK 192 DAYS, I BELIEVE.
AND SO 12 MONTHS FACULTY NEED TO WORK.
200 IS THAT 205 DAYS OR 26 DAYS IS 12 MONTHS TO TEN YEARS, 210 DAYS.
THAT'S A SEPARATE TOPIC I DO WANT TO MENTION SO THAT YOU DON'T FEEL IF WE COMPRESS THE CALENDAR TO 16 WEEKS TO 16 WEEKS IS 32 WEEKS AND FIVE DAYS A WEEK, THAT'S 160 DAYS.
WE'RE NOT TRYING TO SAY, OH, FACULTY NOW WILL WORK 160 DAYS.
THEY'RE STILL WORKING 275 DAYS AS A BODY OF A FACULTY.
OKAY. SO TO TALK ABOUT CALENDAR, WE DID OUR TASK FORCE DID GO OUT CAMPUS WIDE TO SOLICIT SOLICIT FEEDBACK, INCLUDING OPEN FORUMS, GOING TO THE DEPARTMENT DIVISION MEETING TO SEEK FEEDBACK AND TALK TO CONSUMER GROUPS THROUGH THEIR MEETINGS AND SOME INFORMATION WE'VE COLLECTED.
BASICALLY FROM FACULTY PERSPECTIVE, MOST FACULTY ARE QUITE SUPPORTIVE OR THEY'RE VERY FLEXIBLE ON CONVERSION FROM 18 WEEK TO 16 WEEKS, EXCEPT FOR SOME AREAS LIKE ESPECIALLY AREAS WITH LAB SPACE CONCERNS.
THEY'RE REALLY, REALLY WORRIED ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN.
AND ALSO IF THERE IS A ONE TIME COST WHERE WE GET THE RETURN FOR THE COST, IS THAT BENEFICIAL FOR THE STUDENTS OR FOR THE INSTITUTION OR BUDGET OR WHATEVER CLASSIFIED HAVE THAT KIND OF QUESTIONS.
AND THE STUDENTS, UNDERSTANDABLY, THEY HAVE MIXED BAG BECAUSE SOME STUDENTS REALLY WANT FAST PACED, SHORT TERM, SOME STUDENTS WANT MORE TIME IN CASE I GOT LOST AND SOMETHING HAPPENED IN MY FAMILY AND MY JOB, I HAVE TIME TO CATCH UP.
SO SO IT'S VERY UNDERSTANDABLE.
THEY WANT OPTIONS. THAT'S WHAT WE HEARD ANYWAY.
THEY WANT OPTIONS IN MODALITY AND DIFFERENT SEMESTER LENGTHS, ETCETERA.
AND CONFIDENTIAL IS OVERWHELMINGLY.
I SAW THIS MODIFIED, BUT L L I'M MISSING OVERWHELMINGLY.
IT WOULD PREFER THE CURRENT TRADITIONAL LENGTH CALENDAR.
[02:05:06]
AND ALSO FOR THIS STUDY WE DID LOOK AT, SINCE WE ARE NOT LIVING IN VACUUM, WE LOOK AT STILL WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH OTHER DISTRICTS.WE FIND THAT IT'S QUITE GOOD TO SPREAD BETWEEN DIFFERENT DISTRICTS STATEWIDE.
TALKING ABOUT COMPRESSED OR TRADITIONAL CALENDAR.
AND WHEN WE LOOK AT SPECIFIC IN OUR REGION, IT'S VERY INTERESTING.
SO DON'T KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH ORANGE COUNTY, WHICH IS SO DIFFERENT.
AND WITH THAT, ACTUALLY THAT'S THE END OF THIS PRESENTATION.
YEAH. IF WE DECIDE AND OPT NOT TO GO THE WAY OF THE REST OF LA COUNTY AND REMAIN PSEUDO ORANGE COUNTY, I GUESS YOU COULD SAY IS IF WE KEEP THE 18 COUNTIES WEEK CALENDAR, IS THERE SOMETHING THAT WE COULD EXPLORE TO HAVE AN ACCELERATED CLASS? BECAUSE THERE ARE SOME STUDENTS THAT DO WANT TO TAKE AN ACCELERATED CLASS IN 16 WEEKS.
NOT NECESSARILY TO EVEN DO A 16 WEEK PER SE, BUT JUST TO SAY KNOW I'M JUST MAKING UP A NUMBER LIKE COME IN IN EIGHT WEEKS AND SPEND TONS AND TONS AND TONS OF HOURS TO GET ALL YOUR COURSEWORK DONE, GET YOUR DEGREE.
YEAH. YEAH. THAT'S THE MAX NUMBER OF WEEKS WE CAN HAVE IN A SEMESTER.
SO RIGHT NOW IT'S 18 AND IF WE COMPRESS IT, WE CAN COMPRESS AS FEW AS 16.
BUT WITHIN THE BOUNDARY, WE CAN DO ANYTHING.
LIKE I SAID, WE'RE CURRENTLY RIGHT NOW HAVE ONE WEEK TO 15 WEEK CLASSES.
WE CAN DO WHATEVER WE WANT TO DO.
AND I THINK I MENTIONED TO YOU BEFORE WHEN I WAS WORKING WITH PRESENTING THE ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT PLAN, THEY'RE LIKE, ACTUALLY, WE HAVE REAL ESTATE PROGRAMS. THEY DO ACTUALLY SIX WEEK CLASSES BACK TO BACK.
SO THREE WEEK, THREE CLASSES BACK TO BACK.
AND OF COURSE THEY DO MULTIPLE THREES SO THAT OUR STUDENTS CAN BE ELIGIBLE TO TAKE THE REALTOR EXAM WITHIN A SEMESTER BECAUSE THE FAST PACE BECAUSE FOR THOSE FOLKS THAT DO REALLY WANT TO GET ON THE JOB AND CAN DO THE JOB, THEY DON'T WANT TO WAIT FOR TWO YEARS UNTIL THE JOB MARKET CRANKS UP THE HOUSING PRICE CRANKS AND THEY BECOME A REALTOR, WHICH PROBABLY IS NOT A GOOD IDEA.
SO THEY WANT TO GET OUT. BUT SOME DON'T WANT TO TAKE MORE TIME AND THEY WANT TO TAKE PART TIME LOAD.
THERE ARE DIFFERENT NEEDS THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT.
BUT THE POINT FOR YOUR QUESTION, THE 18 WEEKS, IS THE MAX.
ANYTHING SHORTER THAN THAT IS OKAY.
ANYTHING LONGER THAN THAT IS NOT OKAY.
BUT WE CAN DO SHORT TERM CLASSES AS LONG AS THE TOTAL CONTENT HOUR IS NOT LESS THAN 16 WEEKS OF WORTH OF INSTRUCTION. I SEE.
LET'S SAY YOU HAVE A THREE UNIT CLASS.
SO YOU CAN DO A CLASS ON THE GENERAL ED TRACK FOR LESS THAN 16 WEEKS.
IF WE WERE TO IF YOU MEET IF YOU MEET THE HOURS.
CORRECT. IF YOU MEET ALL THOSE HOURS.
AND CURRENTLY, OVER 50% OF OUR SECTIONS ARE DIFFERENT THAN 18 WEEKS.
SO WITHIN THOSE, WE HAVE 15 WEEKS, 12 WEEKS, EIGHT WEEKS, SIX WEEKS.
LIKE I THINK THERE'S SOME THAT ARE LIKE COUPLE OF WEEKS ONLY.
SO WE HAVE A VARIETY THAT IF THE STUDENT WAS TO SELECT SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN 16, THEY HAVE A PRETTY LARGE CATALOG OF OFFERINGS WITH DIFFERENT LENGTHS THE THAT THEY COULD USE.
NOW THERE IS ANOTHER PROJECT IN WHICH A NUMBER OF FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATORS ARE INVOLVED AND DR.
ZOE HAS BEEN WORKING ON, WHICH IS THE STUDENT CENTER IS SCHEDULED TO WHICH IS GOING TO LOOK AT A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT ANGLES OF SCHEDULING CLASSES.
ONE, THE LENGTH TO THE AVAILABILITY BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT TIMEFRAMES OF THE DAY, AND THREE, WHETHER OR NOT THE CLASS INTERFERE WITH A CLASS THAT THE STUDENT IS LIKELY TO TAKE AT THE SAME TIME THE SAME SEMESTER IN ORDER TO MAKE MEANINGFUL COMPLETION FOR GRADUATION, MEANING THE LET'S SAY A STUDENT HAS TO TAKE ALGEBRA AND TAKE BIOLOGY ONE.
AND IF WE OFFER THEM BOTH AT THE SAME TIME THE SAME DAY, STUDENT WON'T BE ABLE TO DO THEM.
BUT IN SEPARATE SEMESTERS, WHICH MEANS THAT WE MAKE THE STUDENT BEHIND A SEMESTER.
[02:10:04]
AND TWO, IF IN THE SHORTER SESSIONS WE CAN OFFER A AND B, MEANING LET'S SAY I HAVE TO TAKE ENGLISH ONE AND TWO AND THEY ARE TWO SECTIONS MAKING SURE THE IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEMESTER A SHORT SECTION OF ENGLISH ONE IS OFFERED AND A SHORT SECTION OF ENGLISH TWO IS OFFERED SO THE STUDENTS CAN ROLL FROM ONE TO THE NEXT. KIND OF LIKE WHAT DR.THERE ARE SOME WE WE ARE TRYING TO WE ARE TRYING TO ORGANIZE THEM.
SO THEY ARE. EASILY ACCESSIBLE AND CLEARLY VISIBLE FOR THE STUDENTS.
I GOT YOUR QUESTION. I THINK THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT CONCEPTS.
BUT JUST THE SEMESTER SEMESTER STRUCTURE.
NOW THERE'S SEPARATE TOPIC THAT IS TOTAL STUDENT CONTACT HOURS.
I THINK WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT IS TOTAL STUDENT CONTACT HOURS.
SO THE SEMESTER LENGTH IS A BOUNDARY.
SO THAT'S TWO DIFFERENT CONCEPTS.
PIERRO WAS TALKING ABOUT, YEAH, THAT MAKES IT A LOT CLEARER TO ME TOO.
AS LONG AS ONE OF THOSE IS FOREST, I'LL TAKE THAT.
BUT IT DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE EVERY CUP HAS TO BE FULL, RIGHT? EVERY CUP CAN BE DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH ICE CREAM YOU HAVE TO PUT IN.
I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT WHEN YOU HAVE A BABY, IT'S EASY TO EXPLAIN.
SHE'S NOT QUITE THERE YET, BUT.
OKAY, MINE IS. GET THERE VERY SOON.
BUT, YOU KNOW, MY BASED ON WHAT I'M HEARING NOW, IF WE SHORTEN AND COMPRESS THE CALENDAR, DOESN'T THAT MAKE THE SCHEDULING OF DIFFERENT CLASSES THAT MUCH LESS FLEXIBLE TO GET THINGS DONE? SO, YOU KNOW, IT'S ABOUT THE SAME, BUT THEN WE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DO, FOR INSTANCE, NINE WEEK COURSES, BUT WE WILL DO EIGHT WEEK COURSES BASICALLY TO, TO DO LIKE BACK TO BACK.
YEAH. SO, SO I MEAN THERE IS, THERE ARE WAYS TO ORGANIZE IT.
SO THE 18 AND THE 16 WORK THE CHALLENGE THAT WE'LL CONTINUE TO HAVE EVERY TIME WE HAVE THESE CONVERSATIONS AND AND HAVE THESE EXPLORATORY COMMITTEES IS THE WE DON'T HAVE A RECOMMENDATION TO MAKE BECAUSE IT SEEMS THAT THE COMMITTEE DIDN'T REALLY AGREE TO GO ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.
SO BY DEFAULT, WE STAY WHERE WE ARE.
I'M NOT SURE IF THE CONVERSATIONS ARE CONTINUING OR THIS IS KIND OF ANOTHER BREAK THAT WE'RE TAKING WITHIN OUR MULTI-YEAR CONVERSATIONS ON THIS.
BUT IT SEEMS THAT THERE WAS NOT NECESSARILY AN AGREEMENT.
BUT IN THE IN THE MEANTIME, I THINK WHAT WE SHOULD DO IS SUPPORT THE GROUP THAT IS WORKING ON THE STUDENT CENTER SCHEDULE SO THEY CAN CARVE A BETTER WAY FOR US TO BE MORE PRODUCTIVE WHEN IN THOSE WINDOWS.
THE OTHER PART IS THERE IS A CONVERSATION AT THE MOMENT AT THE STATE.
I DON'T KNOW HOW QUICKLY IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN, BUT THERE IS A LEVEL OF UNHAPPINESS WITH HOW ENROLLMENT IS BEING CALCULATED AT THE MOMENT, WHICH IS WHY WE HAVE TO DECLARE OUR TERMS 18, 16 AND SO ON.
SO WITH AN 18 WEEK SCHOOL SO WE GET PAID AT A HIGHER RATE WHEN WE TEACH THE FULL 18 CLASSES VERSUS WHEN WE PAY 16, IT'S MINOR, BUT IT'S STILL A DIFFERENCE. SO THE EFFORT THAT MANY SCHOOLS MAKE TO SWITCH THE CALENDAR PER SE IS SO THEY DON'T LOSE ANY APPORTIONMENT ON THE SHORTER SECTIONS, BUT YOU STILL GET THOSE SECTIONS IN BETWEEN, RIGHT? IT'S NOT LIKE EVERY CLASS THAT YOU TEACH FROM THAT POINT ON IS 16, SO YOU MAXIMIZE.
[02:15:07]
IT IN A SIX WEEKS OR IF YOU TEACH IT IN A 17 OR 18 OR WHATEVER THE MODEL MAY BE.SO IF THAT WAS TO TAKE PLACE, THE IMPETUS FOR MOVING TO 16 TO MAXIMIZE ENROLLMENT REALLY WOULDN'T MAKE THAT MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE, AT LEAST FINANCIALLY.
AND FOR NOW, ABOUT 50% OF OUR CLASSES ARE 18.
AND AND WE ARE BASICALLY IN THE SAME SITUATION WE ARE TODAY.
ONE PROBLEM IS ALREADY SOLVED.
SO THE ONLINE CLASS IS CALCULATED BY THE NUMBER OF UNITS MULTIPLIED BY THE BOUNDARY LENGTH.
SO THAT PART IS ALREADY RESOLVED.
SO THERE WILL ALL BE CALCULATED AS THE WAY THE DOCTOR IS MENTIONING.
YEAH, YEAH. IT'S ONLY FAIR THAT WAY FOR ALL DISTRICTS.
OH, OKAY. DOES THAT ALSO INCLUDE MORE FACULTY HOURS OR FACULTY OFFICE HOURS, RATHER.
IT'S ALWAYS CALCULATED LOCALLY, LOCALLY.
I ALWAYS TAKE MORE. OFFICE HOURS HAS BEEN PROVEN TO HELP OUR STUDENTS ALSO TO BE FAIR, BECAUSE THE MORE OFFICE HOURS OUR FACULTY HAVE, THEY ACTUALLY INCREASE STUDENT SUCCESS RATES ALSO.
SO DEFINITELY A LONG CONVERSATION TO HAVE.
YEAH, COMING YEARS IT IS AND IT GETS MORE COMPLICATED.
GETS SACRAMENTO INVOLVED IN WHATEVER RIGHT BUT AT THE PLENARY, ONE OF THE BEST WORKSHOPS THAT I ATTENDED HAD TWO CIOS, BASICALLY VP OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS, WHO WERE ARGUING IN FAVOR OF THE ECONOMIC THE FUNDING FORMULA BENEFITS THAT YOU GET OVERALL FROM A COMPRESSED CALENDAR.
AND I THOUGHT THE NUMBERS THAT THEY PRESENTED WERE AMAZING AND I THOUGHT THEY WERE ALMOST.
WHY AREN'T WE DOING THIS? I MEAN, SO I'D BE HAPPY TO SHARE THE NAMES OF THOSE PEOPLE WITH WHOEVER WANTS TO CONTINUE WORKING ON THIS, BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY, WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE THIS CONVERSATION BACK TO THE SENATE AND HAVE PEOPLE ON BOTH THOSE COMMITTEES.
AND I KNOW THAT A LOT OF FACULTY WANT.
AND THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF TURNOVER FACULTY.
SO WE HAVE MORE FACULTY NOW THAT HAVE BEEN HERE FOR A SHORTER TIME PERIOD.
THEY'RE MUCH MORE LIKELY IN GENERAL TO BE FLEXIBLE AND OPEN MINDED.
ALL RIGHT. CAN I JUST CORRECT SOMETHING? SORRY, ZURICH. ORANGE COUNTY SCHOOLS ARE MOSTLY ACTUALLY ON 16 WEEK CALENDARS.
SO SORRY. FIRST ORANGE COUNTY ADJACENT.
HEY, IT'S NOT IT'S NOT A THING.
I'M A DODGER FAN. I CONVERTED.
I CONVERTED FROM BEING AN ANGEL FAN.
I AM A DODGER FAN. SO THE FIRST THING I WAS A LONG TIME AGO.
THANK YOU, DOCTOR. SO I APPRECIATE IT.
OKAY. THANK YOU. ALL RIGHT, SO RECEIVE AND FILE.
[4.04 Revised Administrative Procedure 7600 titled Campus Police]
ALL RIGHT. GO. NEXT ONE WILL BE REVISED ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE 70 600 TITLE CAMPUS POLICE.DO WE HAVE A PRESENTATION? NO. RECEIVE AND FILE.
OKAY, SO NEXT 14.05 IS FIRST READING REVISED FOR POLICY 70 600.
[4.05 First Reading Revised Board Policy 7600 titled Campus Police]
TITLE CAMPUS POLICE.[02:20:01]
YEAH BUT BOTH OF THEM DEAL WITH THE SAME THING.SO IF YOU RECALL, THE BOARD APPROVED CAMPUS POLICE OF CONTINUING TO USE MILITARY EQUIPMENT.
THIS POLICY NOW EMBEDS THAT INFORMATION IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LEAGUE.
UPDATE THE OTHER ELEMENT THAT WAS ALSO INCLUDED ON THAT IS THE NEW LAW REGARDING THE COMPLAINT PROCESS, REGARDING CAMPUS POLICE AND SO AND HOW THAT WORKS. SO WE'VE ALREADY ROLLED THAT OUT AND THIS JUST MEMORIALIZES IT IN THE BOARD POLICY.
ALL RIGHT. SO ANY QUESTIONS? NO. SO RECEIVE AND FILE.
[5.01 Second Reading and Consideration of Adoption: Revised Board Policy 3410 titled Nondiscrimination]
[5.02 Second Reading and Consideration of Adoption: Revised Board Policy 3420 titled Equal Employment Opportunity]
[5.03 Second Reading and Consideration of Adoption: Revised Board Policy 3430 titled Prohibition of Harassment]
THANK YOU. SO LET'S MOVE ON TO ADMINISTRATIVE ITEMS 5.01 AND WE HAVE TO ADOPT THE REVISION OF THE BOARD POLICY 3410 TITLED NONDISCRIMINATION AS PRESENTED.SO WE HAVE TO VOTE ON SOMETHING.
NO. DR. GUTIERREZ IS EAGER TO WALK YOU THROUGH THE TWO THE THREE ITEMS OR THREE ITEMS. OKAY, GREAT. THANK YOU.
OKAY, SO ALL THREE POLICIES 34, TEN, 34, 20 AND 3430 ARE ALL INTERRELATED.
THEY ALL HAVE TO DO WITH NONDISCRIMINATION, EEO OR HARASSMENT.
AND REALLY WHAT THEY'VE ALL DONE IS WE'VE ADOPTED EDITS AND UPDATES UNDER THE LEAGUE MODEL, GENDER NEUTRAL LANGUAGE ADDITION OF ADDITIONAL PROTECTED CLASSES.
AND YOU WANT TO REPEAT THREE TIMES.
SO WE NEED TO ADOPT IT SO WE'RE DOING OKAY.
[6.01 Reports and Comments from District Officials]
WE ARE MOVING ON TO REPORT AND COMMENTS FROM THE DISTRICT OFFICIAL THAT STAFF WITH OUR MOST POPULAR TRUSTEE, DR. LEDESMA.I DON'T THINK WE HAVE TIME LIMITS ON REPORTS.
AND BECAUSE THIS IS MY LAST ONE, I THINK I MIGHT JUST HAVE TO DRAW THIS ONE OUT FOREVER.
YES. GOING PAST THAT FOR SURE.
OKAY. ON TUESDAY, APRIL 18TH, I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT OUR STATE CAPITOL IN SACRAMENTO TO GIVE PUBLIC COMMENT AT THE ASSEMBLY BUDGET SUBCOMMITTEE ON EDUCATION FINANCE.
AND SO THE HIGHER EDUCATION HOUSING GRANT PROGRAM, AS WE KNOW, IS A CALIFORNIA STATE FUND, STATE FUNDED GRANT THAT WOULD PROVIDE FUNDS TO CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES, UNIVERSITIES TO BUILD STUDENT HOUSING AND ADDRESS THE STUDENT HOUSING CRISIS, AS WE KNOW.
WE GOT NUMBER ONE APPLICATION, SO THAT'S REALLY, REALLY EXCITING.
AND SO I WENT OUT THERE TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT THERE WAS STUDENT SUPPORT TO TELL THEM HOW IMPORTANT IT IS THAT WE NEED THIS FUNDING NOW AND HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS FOR STUDENTS.
AND I HOPE I HAVE MY FINGERS CROSSED THAT BY THE TIME THE MAY REVISE COMES OUT THAT IT IS FUNDED AND ALLOCATED IN THE BUDGET AS INTENDED. SO YEAH, FINGERS CROSSED.
FIERRO, ACTUALLY, SO THAT WAS REALLY NEAT.
WE WERE THERE IN THE CAPITOL AND THAT WAS IN THE MORNING.
FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, IF IT'S PASSED, AB 395 ESSENTIALLY WOULD REQUIRE, AMONG A FEW OTHER THINGS.
I THINK MOST MOST IMPORTANTLY, REQUIRING WOULD REQUIRE CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES TO PRIORITIZE ED PLANS SORT OF AS A DEFAULT FOR STUDENTS PURSUING THEIR HIGHER EDUCATION.
HAVE A SHORTER COMPLETION TIME TO THEIR EDUCATIONAL GOAL.
AND SO I'M ONE OF THOSE STUDENTS WHO HAS BEEN AFFECTED BY BY THIS WHERE I DIDN'T COMPLETE IN TIME
[02:25:10]
OR IN A IN A SHORTER TIME FRAME.AND SO MY GRADUATION AND MY EDUCATIONAL GOALS WERE PROLONGED.
AND I THINK IN A WAY IT'S A BARRIER AS WELL, BECAUSE ALTHOUGH WE THERE'S THIS IDEA THAT EXPLORING TAKING SOME TIME TO FIND YOUR PASSION HERE AT COMMUNITY COLLEGES, UNLIKE OTHER UNIVERSITIES AND HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS, IS CELEBRATED, IT IS GREAT. I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE AWAY FROM IT, BUT I DO BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE BETTER, MORE EFFECTIVE APPROACHES FOR STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE THEIR EDUCATIONAL GOALS.
AND I THINK AB 385 OUTLINES JUST THAT.
YOU KNOW, TO BE ABLE TO ACCESS A MAP, A CLEAR CUT OUTLINE OF AN EDUCATIONAL PATHWAY DETAILING THE SEQUENCE OF COURSES FOR EACH ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE AND CERTIFICATE OFFERED BY THE COLLEGE.
IN ACHIEVING THEIR EDUCATIONAL GOAL, ESPECIALLY FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS.
STUDENTS WHO MAY NOT KNOW HOW TO NAVIGATE HIGHER EDUCATION WHEN THEY FIRST TOUCH CAMPUS LIKE MYSELF.
AND THAT'S REALLY WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT, MAKING SURE THAT STUDENTS ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS. SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.
THE HIGHER THE RISK IT IS FOR A STUDENT TO DROP OUT AND NOT COMPLETE AND LIFE GETS IN THE WAY AND YOU JUST NEVER A STUDENT MAY JUST NEVER GET AROUND TO THAT ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY OF PURSUING THEIR HIGHER EDUCATION.
AND YEAH, I HOPE THAT AB 285 GOES THROUGH.
APPARENTLY IT'S PRETTY CONTROVERSIAL, BUT I THINK IT'S PRETTY STRAIGHTFORWARD.
AND SO A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER, ON THURSDAY, APRIL 20TH, I RETURNED TO SACRAMENTO.
IT WAS REALLY NICE THAT THE SENATORS WERE RECEPTIVE TO OUR CONCERNS.
WE EVEN GOT TO TAKE A PICTURE WITH SENATOR LAIRD, THE CHAIR OF THE COMMITTEE.
AND SO IT WAS REALLY NEAT TO GO OUT THERE WITH MY PEERS AND FRIENDS TO WORK AS A TEAM, NOT ONLY REPRESENTING CERRITOS COLLEGE, BUT THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM AS A WHOLE, BECAUSE IT SEEMED LIKE WE HAD A REALLY STRONG PRESENCE AND THERE WASN'T A LOT OF OTHER COMMUNITY COLLEGES THAT WERE OUT THERE.
AND SO I THINK THERE WAS ABOUT 8 OR 9 OF US OUT THERE.
UM, SO YEAH, THAT WAS REALLY, REALLY NEAT.
ALSO, I BELIEVE IT WAS A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO I ATTENDED OUR WOMEN'S WRESTLING MATCH.
SO I PICKED UP THE NEWSPAPER TODAY, THE CAMPUS NEWSPAPER, AND I'M CHECKING IT OUT.
YEAH, THE OUR WOMEN'S WRESTLING TEAM, THEY'RE STATE CHAMPS.
I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR OR THE SECOND YEAR.
REALLY, REALLY NEW WOMEN'S WRESTLING TEAM THAT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED.
AND THEY'RE ALREADY STATE CHAMPS LIKE THIS IS.
I WILL LOOK HERE TO SEE I THINK IT WAS FOUR OUT OF TEN SOME REALLY COOL STATISTIC OF WOMEN FROM THE WOMEN'S WRESTLING TEAM WHO ARE ACTUALLY STATE CHAMPS.
IT WAS A REALLY NEAT EXPERIENCE AND I WOULD NOT WANT TO GET IN THE RING WITH ANY ONE OF THEM.
ALSO, I'VE BEEN HEARING AT THE SENATE RECENTLY THAT THERE IS THIS FEATURE ON CANVAS WHERE ONCE A STUDENT SUBMITS AN ASSIGNMENT, THAT THIS FEATURE WOULD, AFTER CLICKING SUBMIT ON WHATEVER
[02:30:07]
ASSIGNMENT OR QUIZ THAT CONFETTI POPS OUT ON THE SCREEN.APPARENTLY THERE'S LIKE MIXED FEELINGS ON THE CAMPUS ABOUT THIS.
THERE'S A LOT OF STUDENTS IN ARC WHO DID SUPPORT THIS AND THOUGHT THAT IT WOULD BE REALLY NEAT THAT AFTER SUBMITTING SOMETHING ON CANVAS, YOU DO GET A LITTLE BIT OF RECOGNITION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT, ESPECIALLY, I MEAN, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE STUDENTS WHO ARE ONLY ONLINE AND DON'T GET THAT INTERACTION, WHO MAY NOT GET THAT LEVEL OF RECOGNITION FROM A PROFESSOR.
UM. AND FINALLY, I WOULD LIKE TO MENTION, AS THIS IS MY LAST BOARD MEETING, THAT IT HAS BEEN A HUGE HONOR AND PRIVILEGE TO SERVE AS THE STUDENT TRUSTEE FOR THE 20 2223 SCHOOL YEAR.
AND I'LL BE GOING ONE LAST TIME IN MAY, THE END OF MAY.
BUT I DID WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FIRSTLY TO THE STUDENT BODY FOR FOR ENTRUSTING ME.
THANK YOU FOR ENTRUSTING ME WITH THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF SERVING AS YOUR STUDENT TRUSTEE.
REALLY. YOU KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO BE IN THIS POSITION AND TO ALL STUDENTS, FOR THAT MATTER, WHO ARE COURAGEOUS ENOUGH TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE, RISE TO THE OCCASION AS A STUDENT LEADER, IT'S CHALLENGING.
IT'S HUMBLING, BUT IT IS REWARDING HOW I GOT HERE, I DON'T KNOW.
BUT IT LITERALLY TOOK A VILLAGE.
OUR CLUB ADVISORS, OUR PROFESSORS, OUR COUNSELORS STAFF, OUR FACULTY, THEY'RE DOING THE EVERY DAY ESSENTIAL GROUNDWORK OF PROVIDING A GREAT COLLEGE EXPERIENCE AND PREPARING STUDENTS FOR HIGHER SOCIAL MOBILITY AND CERRITOS COLLEGE IS LIKE A SECOND HOME FOR ME, SO I'M ETERNALLY GRATEFUL FOR EVERYONE HERE.
I'D ALSO LIKE TO GRADUATE JACKIE SCOTT, OUR STUDENT TRUSTEE ELECT.
I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY MORE TIMES I CAN SAY THANK YOU.
HOW DO YOU FOLLOW THAT? RIGHT. OH, OKAY.
NO, REALLY, HECTOR, THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOU KNOWLEDGE YOU'VE DONE IN THE LAST YEAR.
YOU KNOW, I'VE BEEN HERE FOR EIGHT YEARS, AND I'VE BECOME A GRIZZLED VETERAN NOW.
BUT, LIKE, REALLY, YOU KNOW, YOU'RE DEFINITELY ONE OF THE STANDOUT TRUSTEES OVER THESE LAST EIGHT YEARS THAT I'VE BEEN ON HERE TO SEE HOW MUCH DEDICATION AND PASSION YOU REALLY BRING TO THIS POSITION.
AND I REALLY APPRECIATE THE NEW HEIGHTS THAT YOU BROUGHT THIS STUDENT TRUSTEE POSITION TO.
AND JACKIE REALLY HAS SOME BIG SHOES TO FILL.
AND, YOU KNOW, IT'S REALLY SUCH A BIG DEDICATION THAT YOU'VE GONE NOT ONLY ONCE TO SACRAMENTO, BUT YOU'RE GOING TO BE GOING TWICE TO DO SOMETHING THAT YOU WILL NOT BE THE BENEFICIARY OF.
BUT I THINK THAT THAT'S PART OF WHY YOU WENT INTO THIS POSITION IN THE FIRST PLACE AND WHY PEOPLE ELECTED YOU AND CHOSE YOU TO BE IN THIS POSITION IS BECAUSE THEY SAW THE DEDICATION AND PASSION THAT YOU DO BRING.
AND YOU WILL LEAVE THAT LEGACY FOR MANY DECADES TO COME, THAT'S FOR SURE.
[02:35:04]
SO THANK YOU, HECTOR.I WENT TO LOVE LA MIRADA'S GARDEN HILL HORSE RAIL PAINTING I'VE.
AS A BOARD MEMBER, I LED THAT PROJECT ALONG WITH SOME OF OUR NEIGHBORS TO GIVE A FRESH COAT OF HORSE RAIL PAINTING TO THE FRONT AREA AND THE COMMUNITY CENTER.
SO THOSE ARE ALWAYS FUN LITTLE PROJECTS BECAUSE THIS YEAR OUR BOARD DECIDED THAT WE WOULD DO MINI DAYS OF SERVICE RATHER THAN A SINGLE DAY OF SERVICE AS WE HAVE DONE IN YEARS PAST.
SO IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN PAINTING HORSE RAILS AT WINDERMERE PARK, LET ME KNOW AND WE CAN WE CAN SIGN YOU UP FOR THAT BECAUSE I KNOW YOU'RE ALL JUST RARING TO TO DO THAT. BUT NO, IT'S A LOT OF FUN.
IF YOU GUYS HAVE A SIMILAR ORGANIZATION IN YOUR PARTICULAR CITY.
THE LOVE YOUR CITY PROJECT IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC AND, YOU KNOW, VERY, VERY GOOD TO BE A PART OF.
I ALSO ATTENDED THE K THROUGH 12 PARTNERS BREAKFAST, ALONG WITH MANY OF OUR TRUSTEES HERE, AND IT'S REALLY GOOD TO SEE THAT WE ARE CONTINUING THOSE PARTNERSHIPS AND HAVING US SHOW UP IN PERSON REALLY BRINGS A NEW ELEMENT THAT WE HAVEN'T SEEN SINCE PRIOR TO COVID, ESPECIALLY WITH ALL OF THE NEW LEGISLATION THAT HAS BEEN PASSED THAT CONTINUES TO STREAMLINE DUAL ENROLLMENT.
AND, YOU KNOW, ALL OF THE NEW PROGRAMS THAT WE'RE DOING.
SO THE MORE THAT WE CAN DO, THE BETTER WE ALL BENEFIT FROM THAT.
SO OUR K THROUGH 12 PARTNERS ARE ESSENTIAL IN ALL OF THAT.
AND THEN FINALLY TODAY, ALMOST THREE HOURS LATER, TRUSTEE PACHECO THAT WE'RE YOU CAN FIND OUT NOW ABOUT HOW THAT WENT, RIGHT? SO IT WENT WELL.
BUT, YOU KNOW, A POOR PORKSHANK THAT'S THERE'S ONE TOMORROW.
IF THERE'S NO RESERVATIONS BOOKED, IT'S ALL BOOKED.
FANTASTIC PROGRAM, VERY UNDERRATED, LET'S JUST SAY, IN THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE.
AND THAT'S WHY I THINK WE SHOULD CONTINUE TO MAKE IT MORE PUBLIC TO, YOU KNOW, RECRUIT PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY TO BE A PART OF THIS PROGRAM, WHICH CREATES FANTASTIC MEALS WHICH, YOU KNOW, REALLY NEEDS.
I MEAN, IT HAD A BIG INVESTMENT OF, WHAT, $6 MILLION SIX YEARS AGO NOW WAS THE FIVE YEARS AGO.
SO, I MEAN, THAT THAT KITCHEN IS STILL GOING STRONG AND WELL.
AND, YOU KNOW, FOR ALL OF THE THE TIME THAT IT'S SERVED IT CONTINUES TO.
YOU KNOW, BRING OUT, YOU KNOW, AMAZING FOOD, NOT BECAUSE OF THE FACILITIES PER SE, BUT BECAUSE OF THE STUDENTS AND BECAUSE OF THE FACULTY THAT PUT THEIR HEART AND SOUL INTO CREATING.
AMAZING RECIPES AND AMAZING CLASSES THAT REALLY HELP THESE STUDENTS GET PREPARED TO GO INTO WHATEVER INDUSTRY THAT THEY DESIRE, WHETHER IT BE THE RESTAURANT OR HOTELIER OR SO ON.
SO THANK YOU TO CHEF PIERINI AND CHEF AMBER DOUGLAS FOR PUTTING THIS ALL TOGETHER, AND I LOOK FORWARD TO ATTENDING THEIR GRADUATION NEXT TUESDAY, ISN'T IT? RIGHT. WELL, IF THEY HAVE FOOD.
MAYBE. IS IT TUESDAY AT 1:00? I WANT TO SAY 11.
NEXT TUESDAY. YEAH, TUESDAY AT 11.
SO I WILL BE THERE. THANK YOU.
TRUSTEE. PACHECO. I WANTED TO THANK HECTOR.
HE'S DONE A FABULOUS JOB AND IT'S BEEN A PLEASURE HAVING YOU HERE AS A TRUSTEE.
[02:40:02]
SO THAT THEY CAN UNDERSTAND YOUR JOURNEY.SO IT WOULD BE GREAT TO HAVE YOU AS A MENTOR.
I ALSO WENT TO EARTH DAY WHERE YOU WERE AT BECAUSE HE WAS ALL OVER THE PLACE AND IT WAS NICE TO SEE HEAR WHAT THE COLLEGE WAS DOING ON THAT PARTICULAR DAY AND CELEBRATING EARTH DAY AND HOW THEY WERE TRYING TO MAKE OUR ENVIRONMENT BETTER. AND I KNOW THAT THAT'S A GREAT PASSION OF YOURS AND THAT'S WHY YOU'RE GOING INTO THE FIELD THAT YOU'RE GOING.
I ALSO WANT TO APPRECIATE THE TEACHERS AND THE THE FACULTY THIS WEEK.
I KNOW IT'S TEACHER FACULTY RECOGNITION WEEK AND I WANT TO THANK THEM FOR ALL THEIR SERVICE AND EVERYTHING THEY DO IN ORDER TO FOR OUR STUDENTS TO GROW AND TO REALLY GET A CAREER.
I THINK THE STUDENTS WOULD NOT BE WHERE THEY'RE AT.
SO I REALLY, TRULY WANT TO THANK ALL THE FACULTY BECAUSE YOU GUYS ARE GREAT.
I ALSO WENT TO THE MILITARY BALL.
THAT WAS A REALLY FUN EVENT, RIGHT? AND I GOT TO SEE SOMEONE IN A TUX.
YOU. IT WAS. HE WAS NICELY DRESSED UP.
AND IT WAS IT WAS GREAT TO SEE US HONOR THE VETERANS THAT ARE GRADUATING AND HEAR THEIR STORIES.
I ALSO GOT TO GO TO THE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP DINNER.
THAT WAS ALSO ANOTHER NICE EVENT THAT I WENT TO, AND IT WAS GREAT TO SEE THE DIFFERENT SCHOLARSHIPS THAT WERE OFFERED TO THE DIFFERENT STUDENTS AND HOW THEY'RE PROGRESSING THEIR CAREERS.
I ALSO WAS PART OF THE K THROUGH 12 PARTNERSHIP BECAUSE TO ME IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE DO, DO AND HELP AND START CLASSES.
AND AT THE AT THE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL SO THAT WHEN THEY REACH HERE AT CERRITOS COLLEGE, THEY CAN IMMEDIATELY GET THEIR AA DEGREE.
AND I THINK IT WAS A REALLY GOOD MEETING.
IT LOOKS LIKE I WENT THROUGH A LOT OF THINGS, SO I ALSO WENT TO THE RANCHO LOS AMIGOS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION. AGAIN, IT SINCE RANCHO IS PART OF WHERE HEALTH CARE IS IMPORTANT TO ME THAT HOSPITAL IS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FOR REHAB AND MAKING SURE THAT AGAIN WE ARE HELPING THOSE THAT REALLY NEED OUR SERVICES SO THAT THEY CAN BE PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS.
AND THE STORIES THAT YOU HEAR AT THAT AT THAT FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP, IT WAS A FOUNDATION MEETING.
IT IT WAS GREAT TO HEAR THAT, YOU KNOW, ALL THE ADVANCES THAT THAT HAVE BEEN DONE.
I ALSO WANT TO THANK AND BESIDES TEACHER AND FACULTY APPRECIATION WEEK, THIS HAPPENS TO BE NURSES WEEK. SO I WANT TO THANK ALL THE NURSES OUT THERE FOR ALL THAT THEY DO AND FOR EVERYTHING THAT THEY THEY'RE ALWAYS PUTTING THEIR LIFE, ESPECIALLY DURING COVID.
THEY WERE PUTTING THEIR LIFE ON THE LINE.
SO I DO WANT TO THANK ALL THE NURSES OUT THERE THAT DURING THIS WEEK AND ALSO I WANT TO THANK ALL THE MOTHERS FOR SO HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY.
AND IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW, TODAY IS MOTHER'S DAY FOR ANYONE IN LIKE LATIN AMERICA, IT'S WE CALL IT MEXICAN MOTHER'S DAY. SO WE GET TO CELEBRATE.
WE GET TO CELEBRATE TWO MOTHER'S DAY, BY THE WAY, THE 10TH FOR US, THE 10TH IS ALWAYS MOTHER'S DAY.
AND SO IF IT DOESN'T FALL ON SUNDAY, I ALWAYS CLAIM TWO DAYS.
YES. AND I CLAIM THE SUNDAY TOO.
SO I ALWAYS TELL MY CHILDREN AND MY HUSBAND, NO, YOU HAVE TO CELEBRATE ME TWICE.
SO FOR THE MOTHERS OUT THERE ALSO, HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY.
AND CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES APPRECIATION IS COMING UP AND IT WILL BE ON MAY 22ND, THE WEEK OF
[02:45:03]
MAY 22ND. AND AGAIN, THANKING BECAUSE I KNOW WE WON'T HAVE A MEETING DURING THAT TIME, BUT I WANT TO THANK THE CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES FOR ALL THEIR HARD WORK THAT THEY DO FOR THIS COLLEGE.YOU A LOT. I'LL PASS IT ON, SALAZAR.
FIRST, I WANT TO THANK TRUSTEE LEDESMA FOR HIS SERVICE.
WE WERE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE YOU THIS YEAR, AS WERE THE STUDENTS.
AND ALSO WENT TO EARTH DAY WITH MY CHILDREN.
FIERRO, ANDREA, CHERYL, EVERYONE WHO PUT IT TOGETHER.
IT WAS GREAT TO SEE I DID AS DR.
PIERRO. I SAID, WHERE ARE THE STUDENTS? AND HE'S LIKE, IT'S A COMMUNITY EVENT.
I'M LIKE, DUH. BECAUSE ALL WE SAW WAS CHILDREN, FAMILIES, COMMUNITY.
IT WAS GREAT. SO THANK YOU FOR EVERYONE WHO VOLUNTEERED.
I TOOK MY KIDS INSIDE TO THE ART GALLERY.
THIS IS WHAT YOU DO. AND SO I THINK IT WAS GREAT.
SO THANK YOU FOR REALLY KIND OF PUTTING THE COMMUNITY IN THE FOREFRONT.
SO, MARIANA, WE HAVE A LOT OF THE SAME THINGS.
THAT'S IN MY NOTES. BUT I'LL MAKE THIS QUICK.
I WANT TO SAY THAT I ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO THE K 12 PARTNERSHIP MEETING.
BUT, YOU KNOW, AS FAR AS AS FAR AS DUAL ENROLLMENT AND THE CERRITOS PROMISE, THE DATA HASN'T OR THE DATA DOESN'T LIE AND WE HAVE OUTSTANDING RESULTS.
AND SO JUST MAKING SURE THAT WE JUST STAY ON COURSE AND WE RECRUIT MORE STUDENTS TO BE INVOLVED IN DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE HERE IN THE CERRITOS PROMISE AND LEADING US TO THAT CONTINUED SUCCESS.
I'M JUST EXCITED ABOUT THAT AS WELL AS, YOU KNOW, JUST SEEING ALL THE PARTNERS COME OUT.
AND AS IT RELATES TO EDUCATION FOR K 12 AND NEXT, I WOULD LIKE TO, YES, RECOGNIZE OUR TEACHERS, OUR EDUCATORS, OUR CLASSIFIED STAFF.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE WORK THAT YOU DO EVERY DAY.
AND, YOU KNOW, HAVING A WEEK AND A DAY IS, OF COURSE, NOT ENOUGH IN COMPARISON TO THE GREATNESS THAT YOU PROVIDE TO OUR STUDENTS, PROVIDE TO THE COLLEGE EVERY DAY, YOU KNOW? SO THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ALL OF YOUR WORK HERE AT CERRITOS COLLEGE.
NEXT, I WAS ABLE TO ATTEND THE ANNUAL TRUSTEE CONFERENCE OVER THE WEEKEND IN MONTEREY.
AND AGAIN, THIS JUST YOU KNOW, I LOVE THE OPPORTUNITIES TO CONTINUE TO LEARN AND GROW SO THAT I CAN BE IMPACTFUL IN MY ROLE AS A TRUSTEE HERE AT CERRITOS COLLEGE. SO I AM VERY THANKFUL FOR THOSE OPPORTUNITIES.
AND SO FAR, IT'S JUST LIKE THEY HAVE BEEN AMAZING.
HONESTLY. SO I'M GLAD TO BE A PART OF THOSE OPPORTUNITIES.
NEXT, LET'S SEE, WHERE AM I GOING TO GO? ALL MY NOTES.
OH, I DO ENCOURAGE YOU TO PLEASE SHARE THE WORD AND SPREAD THE WORD IN REGARDS TO THE EVENT THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO SHOWCASE THE AFRICANA STUDIES DEPARTMENT AND WHAT IT HAS TO OFFER ON SATURDAY, JUNE 3RD.
GRADUATION SEASON IS UPON US, RIGHT? SO I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND A FEW OF THE EVENTS FOR OUR CLASS OF 2023 GRADUATES.
AND SO I DID ATTEND THE MILITARY BALL.
[02:50:05]
ALL THE NAMES OF THE GRADUATES THAT THEY WERE CELEBRATING FRONT AND BACK THREE COLUMNS.AND I HAVE A LITTLE NOTE HERE.
MAY YOUR FUTURE BE BRIGHT AND YOU CONTINUE TO SERVE FOR ALL OF OUR CLASS OF 2023 GRADUATES.
AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO PARTICIPATING IN THE GRADUATION NEXT WEEK.
NEXT, I WAS ALSO ABLE TO ATTEND THE DOWNEY HIGH SCHOOL DANCE PROGRAM.
AND SUPPORTING THAT EVENT THE LAKEWOOD CELEBRATES, WE ALWAYS, YOU KNOW, DEFINITELY WANT TO THANK OUR VOLUNTEERS AND THE PEOPLE WHO DO WORK BEHIND THE SCENES THAT DON'T NECESSARILY GET THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND THE RECOGNITION THAT THEY DESERVE.
BUT THAT WAS A GREAT EVENT LAST NIGHT.
BUT, YOU KNOW, AGAIN, YOU HAVE BEEN TO SEVERAL EVENTS, YOU KNOW, THROUGHOUT YOUR TERM REPRESENTING THE STUDENTS HERE, BEING THAT VOICE FOR THEM, BEING THAT ADVOCATE AND WORKING ALONGSIDE, YOU KNOW, THE BOARD, DR.
FARROW AND OTHER STAFF HERE AT CERRITOS COLLEGE.
AND YOUR WORK HAS TRULY, TRULY BEEN IMPACTFUL.
AND SO I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST ON YOUR JOURNEY AT HUMBOLDT.
AND I KNOW YOU'RE JUST GOING TO BE, YOU KNOW, SUCCESSFUL, YOU KNOW, JUST AT ALL TIMES.
ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
FIRST, I JUST WANT TO JUST TO ALSO THANK AND CONGRATULATE TRUSTEE LEDESMA.
IT'S BEEN REALLY AN HONOR TO WORK WITH YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR TRANSFERRING.
IT SOUNDS AMAZING. I THINK THAT'S GOING TO BE THE PERFECT PLACE FOR YOU TO CONTINUE.
I REMEMBER WHEN YOU CAME HERE AND TALKED ABOUT THE BREAK FREE FROM PLASTIC PLEDGE AND YOU'RE SAYING, HOW DID I GET HERE? I THINK THAT'S KIND OF HOW YOU GOT HERE, RIGHT? IS BEING A STUDENT LEADER ON THAT.
AND I THINK, YOU KNOW, THE ONE THING IS I'M GETTING READY TO REFLECT ON, YOU KNOW, ALMOST MY 12 YEARS HERE IS THAT I JUST THINK OUR OUR STUDENTS ARE REALLY LEADERS ON IN THE ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY.
AND I THINK I COULD SAY THAT THE STUDENTS THAT PROBABLY HAVE HAD EVEN A LARGER INFLUENCE ON MY THINKING ABOUT THIS AND ABOUT WHAT WE DO TO REALLY MAKE THE WORLD BETTER FOR THE NEXT GENERATION. SO I JUST WANTED TO ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR COMMITMENT TO THAT, BECAUSE IT'S ALWAYS BEEN NOTEWORTHY AND I THINK YOU PICKED A PERFECT DEGREE AND I'M EXCITED FOR YOU.
SO JUST AGAIN, CONGRATULATIONS FOR EVERYTHING.
ON THE SAME NOTE TOO, IS I ALSO WANTED JUST TO MENTION THAT WHILE TRUSTEE LEDESMA HAS A LOT OF RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES, LIKE ALL OF US AT TRUSTEE, IT'S NOT THE SAME AT COLLEGE CAMPUSES ACROSS THE STATE.
AND SOME TRUSTEES DON'T GET A STIPEND.
THEY DON'T GET INSURANCE, THEY DON'T GET THE ADVISORY VOTE.
SO AGAIN, I THINK, YOU KNOW, JUST TO CONTINUE TO HIGHLIGHT THAT EFFORT, ONE OF THE BILLS THAT A COUPLE I THINK IT WAS LAST 2 MILLION YEARS AGO THAT WE ACTUALLY ADOPTED THE SUPPORT POSITION AT THE LEAGUE IS AB 1541 BY ASSEMBLY MEMBER MIKE FONG FONG, WHICH WOULD GIVE EACH STUDENT, MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF A COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT AN ADVISORY VOTE, BECAUSE AGAIN, THERE ARE STILL COLLEGES ACROSS THIS THE STATE THAT DO NOT GIVE THAT STUDENTS THE RIGHT.
I WAS, OF COURSE, SHARE EVERYTHING THAT WE DO TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENT TRUSTEE.
BUT AGAIN, I MEAN, IT'S STILL A FIGHT WITHIN AND WITHIN THE STATE.
AND AGAIN, TO TRY TO REALLY FORCE OTHER COLLEGE DISTRICTS TO DO THE SAME.
THE ONLY I ATTENDED, LIKE MANY OF YOU SAID, ALL THESE FABULOUS EVENTS WE HAD HERE ON CAMPUS.
THE ONLY THING ELSE I JUST WANTED JUST TO THANK EVERYBODY.
I DID GET REELECTED TO THE TRIPLE SEAT BOARD, SO I HAVE A THREE MORE YEARS ON THE BOARD.
AND I REALLY COULDN'T DO WITHOUT MY COLLEAGUES SUPPORT.
SO I JUST WANTED TO RECOGNIZE EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU.
AND THANK YOU THIS WEEKEND, TOO.
ALONG WITH WITH TRUSTEE GREEN, I ATTENDED OUR ANNUAL CONVENTION.
[02:55:03]
IT WAS FANTASTIC.DR. FARRELL'S PRESENTATION WITH THE LATINO CAUCUS, AGAIN, WAS AMAZING, AS ALWAYS, AND REALLY JUST TRYING TO GET TO GET SUPPORT AND TO BUILD AWARENESS ON THE BILL THAT HECTOR REALLY DESCRIBED VERY, VERY WELL.
SO THAT WAS A HIGHLIGHT FOR ME.
I THINK THE OTHER BIG HIGHLIGHT WAS THE BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM.
AND IF YOU GUYS HAVE NOT CAUGHT UP, WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE STATE ON THE BACHELOR'S DEGREE PROGRAMS AT COMMUNITY COLLEGES? GOOGLE IT BECAUSE IT IS REALLY AN INTERESTING PUBLIC POLICY DILEMMA AND CHALLENGE AND WE DON'T SEEM TO BE ON THE RIGHT END AS COMMUNITY COLLEGES.
BUT WE HAD A REALLY FASCINATING PRESENTATION FROM THREE COMMUNITY COLLEGES THAT HAVE HAD SUCCESS IN THEIR BACCALAUREATE PROGRAMS. I JUST HAVE A HARD TIME SAYING THAT WORD, BUT ONE OF THEM WAS FEATHER RIVER COLLEGE, WHICH AGAIN, YOU CAN JUST GOOGLE THEM BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN IN THE NEWS.
TRINA SAYS HE'S PUBLIC AND PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE FROM THE CAL STATE SYSTEM BECAUSE OF YOU.
I DON'T KNOW IF YOU GUYS KNOW THAT YOU CAN.
BUT HE REALLY JUST TALKED ABOUT IT'S A VERY REMOTE LOCATION.
FEATHER RIVER COLLEGE, I GUESS IT'S NEAR THE THE NEVADA, RENO, NEVADA, CALIFORNIA.
HE CALLS IT NORTH, NORTH, EASTERN, NORTH NORTHEAST.
YEAH, NORTHEAST CALIFORNIA LIKE THAT REALLY DOES EXIST.
AND HIS YOU KNOW, HIS PUSH TO HAVE THIS PROGRAM IS JUST VERY, VERY FASCINATING.
AND THEN SAN DIEGO CITY COLLEGE WITH THEIR CYBERSECURITY PROGRAM.
SO, AGAIN, JUST REALLY AMAZING WORK.
AND EVEN THOUGH, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE A CONDITIONAL IMPROVEMENT, IT'S NOT OVER YET.
SO IF ANYBODY REMEMBER, WE HAD OUR DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM COME AND TALK TO US AND THEY.
ALL UP THIS FABULOUS APPLICATION AND WE GOT CONDITIONAL APPROVAL.
BUT I'M HOPING WE'RE STILL GOING TO SACRAMENTO ON MAY 23RD.
AND THAT WILL BE A TALKING POINT BECAUSE I WAS JUST REALLY IMPRESSED.
AND I THINK THE ONE THING THAT WAS MOST IMPRESSIVE IS THAT ALL THESE JOBS ARE GOOD PAYING JOBS, RIGHT? THAT WE ARE PRODUCING AT A MUCH LOWER COST AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE, COMMUNITY COLLEGE LEVEL AND PRICES AND CONVENIENCE.
AND I DON'T KNOW. SO I WAS REALLY, REALLY MOTIVATED ON THAT.
SO THAT WAS REALLY A REALLY COOL PRESENTATION.
AND THEN THE OTHER COOL PRESENTATION, OF COURSE, WAS ON HOUSING.
AS TRUSTEE LEDESMA MENTIONED, THERE'S A LOT OF INTEREST AND THE STATE FUNDING, AS WELL AS SEVERAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS INCLUDED THAT IN THEIR BOND TOO. SO, I MEAN, AGAIN, LOTS OF INTEREST IN WHAT THE DIFFERENT MODELS ARE FOR STUDENT HOUSING, HOW YOU PROVIDE THE SERVICES, WHO PROVIDES THE SERVICES? DO YOU ALLOW STUDENTS WITH FAMILIES? DO YOU NOT? SO IT WAS ALL VERY INTERESTING DISCUSSION.
SO AGAIN, I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE IF YOU'RE ABLE TO ATTEND ANY OF THE LEAD CONFERENCES, I WOULD DEFINITELY SAY IN THE LAST 11 YEARS SINCE I'VE BEEN ATTENDING, THEY HAVE GOTTEN MUCH, MUCH BETTER. I FEEL THAT THEY'VE GOTTEN MUCH, MUCH MORE SUBSTANTIVE, VERY, VERY CURRENT ON KIND OF THE CHALLENGES THAT WE'RE FACING AND STUFF.
SO IT WAS A REALLY GOOD WEEKEND.
AND ARE YOU TALK ABOUT THE TRIP IN MAY OR JUST BECAUSE THAT'S COMING UP REALLY SOON? IF WE'RE PLANNING ON DOING GOING WE'RE NOT YEAH IT'S RIGHT IT'S PLANNED AND WE HAVE WE HAVE MEETINGS ALL DAY.
OKAY. YES. OKAY. SO I NEED TO PROBABLY SCHEDULE MY FLIGHT AND STUFF BECAUSE AGAIN, BUT AGAIN, I JUST THINK A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES TO PLEASE GET INVOLVED, TO PLEASE GET ENGAGED BECAUSE THEY ARE ISSUES THAT ARE DIRECTLY GOING ON THAT IMPACT, YOU KNOW? CERRITOS COLLEGE SO THANK YOU.
I MEAN, EVERYTHING HAS BEEN JUST JUMBLED ONE THING AFTER ANOTHER.
WE HAVE DONE A LOT OF WORK OVER THE LAST SEMESTER.
IT SEEMS LIKE IT HAS BEEN NONSTOP, BUT I WANT TO FIRST THANK OUR FACULTY SUPPORT EVERYWHERE FOR THE PROGRAMS, FOR THE HOUSING, FOR THE SCHEDULING, FOR PROGRAMING.
I MEAN, IT HAS BEEN IT HAS BEEN GREAT.
SO THANK YOU. AND THANK YOU, DENNIS, FOR FOR LEADING THAT WORK.
[03:00:03]
THANK YOU. LYNN, I KNOW YOU ALSO HAVE BEEN INVOLVED.I APPRECIATE YOUR EFFORT COMMUNICATION IN ALL THESE.
I ALSO JUST NOT HERE, BUT I WANT TO TAKE THANK IRLANDA.
SHE WAS NOT TELLING ME TODAY TO THEY WERE ABLE TO GET THAT LETTER OF SUPPORT FOR THE HOUSING AT THE LAST MINUTE IN SO SO IT'S GOOD AND SHE'S ALREADY OFFERING HELP TO BEGIN ADDITIONAL WORK ON THE ON THE ADVOCACY FOR FOR THE DEGREE.
SO WE HAVE DONE QUITE A BIT OF WORK IN THAT REGARD.
IT SEEMS LIKE WE'RE MAKING A LITTLE BIT OF PROGRESS THERE.
SO WE NEED TO KEEP THAT DOOR OPEN FOR THE FOR THE ADDITIONAL DEGREES.
SO IT IS AN INCREDIBLY INTERESTING POLICY ISSUE BECAUSE IT HAS BECOME KIND OF LIKE A MATCH AND SEE WHO CONFLICTS THE MOST.
BUT WHAT IS IMPORTANT THERE IS TO REMEMBER THAT THIS IS ABOUT ACCESS FOR COMMUNITIES OF COLOR AND LOW INCOME, WHICH IS WHICH ARE THE COMMUNITIES THAT ACTUALLY BENEFIT FROM BACCALAUREATE DEGREE PROGRAMS AT COMMUNITY COLLEGES.
WELL, THE CALIFORNIA DATA IS NEW, ACTUALLY CHOSE THE SAME EXACT IMPACT AS THE DATA THAT HAS AVAILABLE BEEN AVAILABLE ACROSS THE NATION, BECAUSE WE LIKE TO THINK THAT AS CALIFORNIA GOES, SO IS THE REST OF THE COUNTRY.
THAT IS NOT TRUE IN ALL CASES, BACCALAUREATE DEGREES IN COMMUNITY COLLEGES ARE VERY, VERY WELL DEVELOPED IN OTHER STATES OVER 20 YEAR PERIODS WITH SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF DATA AND IMPACT.
SO SO THAT IS THAT'S GREAT WORK THERE.
AGAIN, HOUSING GOING, GOING REALLY WELL.
AND I FEEL THE AFTER THIS ADVOCACY SESSION IS OVER, I PROBABLY SHOULD HIDE FOR A BED BECAUSE THEY'RE PROBABLY TIRED TO SEE ME AND TIRED OF ME NAGGING THEM AND GIVING THEM A HARD TIME THERE.
BUT THAT IS PART OF THE WORK THAT WE HAVE TO DO.
I WANT TO YIELD THE REST OF MY TIME TO HECTOR, UNLESS HE HAS MORE TO SAY TO TO ANDREA SO YOU CAN PROVIDE AN UPDATE ON THE PROJECT YOU'RE WORKING ON.
ARE YOU GETTING READY? THANK YOU.
WELL, THIS IS MY FIRST REPORT EVER TO THE BOARD, SO I'M EXCITED.
BUT I THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK ABOUT THE COLLEGE TOUR.
THEY ARE ON CAMPUS ALL THIS WEEK, MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY, AND THEY ARE A FANTASTIC FILMING CREW.
THEY ARE FILMING TEN STUDENTS WHO AUDITIONED FOR THE COLLEGE TOUR.
IT'S GOING TO BE A SHOW ON AMAZON PRIME.
IT'LL BE ACTUALLY AIRING ON AMAZON PRIME LATER ON IN THE FALL SEMESTER.
BUT IF I COULD ALSO JUST ADD HOW AMAZING FACULTY, STAFF, ADMINISTRATORS, EVERYBODY STEPS UP TO SHOWCASE ALL THE GREAT PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE ON CAMPUS.
I DON'T GET TO GET OUT OF THE OFFICE TOO MUCH, SO IT'S REALLY NICE TO BE ABLE TO GO TO THE DIFFERENT AREAS ON CAMPUS AND EVERYBODY JUST JUMPS AT A MOMENT'S NOTICE TO BE ABLE TO FEATURE WOODWORKING, METALS, NURSING, JUST ALL THE PROGRAMS. I THINK THAT'S A SPOILER ALERT, BUT THERE'S A LOT OF REALLY GOOD PROGRAMS, SO IT'S BEEN A GREAT OPPORTUNITY.
ALL RIGHT. SO I ATTEND THE ABC DISTRICT AND ALSO CERRITOS CITY COUNCIL MEETING TO SUPPORT DR.
FIERRO TO THE STATE OF THE EDUCATION.
I ALSO ATTEND MAY 3RD THE EVENT AAPI EVENT DONE BY DR.
GUTIERREZ. THAT'S A GREAT EVENT.
YOU KNOW, I ALSO ATTEND THE EARTH DAY AND I DON'T NEED TO SAY HOW GOOD IS THAT? EVERYBODY SAY AND FOR HECTOR.
ALL RIGHT. SO I'M JUST GOING TO COPY EVERYBODY'S WORD AND PASTE IT TO YOU.
AND TO SUMMARIZE, YOU ARE VERY GOOD.
THANK YOU. AND NO DOUBT WE'RE GOING TO MOVE ON TO CLOSE.
[7. Closed Session]
OKAY. WE'RE GOING TO MOVE ON TO THE CLOSED SESSION.AND THEY ARE SEVEN FIVE ITEMS AND ONLY ONE READ OUT.
[03:05:02]
SO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AUTHORIZED THE EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF BUSINESS SERVICE TO ENTER INTO A SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT WITH CLEMENT ROSSUM AMARI FOR $3,000.I SIX ABSENCE JAMES CODY BIRKEY.
